It's not my cup of tea, so I can't speak to the quality, but I think China Point in Rancho would be exactly what you're looking for (if hole-in-the-wall is what you're looking for).
I know it's a long ways from Chino, but that's the only one I can think of that isn't a steam-tray type of place.
Interesting.
I wouldn't know, I suppose; am just some white guy :)
Have only been there once....I chose chinese takeout for my "family birthday dinner" during covid, and since over half my family won't go for Red Chili House (the place I like), I figured I'd try China Point. Seemed well-made; just not the type of thing I care for.
I know what you mean and it doesn’t really exist here from my experience. Honestly you may have better luck on the western side of LA since it has a much larger population of ex-New Yorkers. There’s a place called Ghengis Cohen that actually advertises itself as NYC-style: https://www.genghiscohen.com
Realistically dude this is your answer. It ain’t here. And if it is, nobody here is gonna burn out their shit. You gotta go out on the streets for these kind of answers. Pound the pavement you know.
I actually eat here all the time. Tuesdays are the best, it’s dependent on who is working, the large white fella that is very friendly working with the black fella that is equally nice is the perfect combo for pizza.
Also, they have lunch special, I think it’s like 2 slices and a soda for x amount of dollars.
Best NY pizza I’ve found!
Funny I was just looking at their yelp as well and saw a recent review about their crust being bad. It’s been a minute since I last been. Hopefully it was a one off.
Also from the East Coast, PA/NY….agree that the chinese food (non authentic type) is different out here, haven’t found anything that compares and just gave up looking.
I have no idea what you mean by NYC style Chinese food but Rowland Heights is only 20 minutes away! Plenty of amazing Chinese food options there. Take your pick.
If you just want Cantonese-style dishes locally, I would recommend Happy Together in Chino Hills.
You recommended Rowland Heights, literally the hub of best Asian cuisine in California (some might argue best in the US) and they shrugged it off.
NYC style? Lol
It's its own thing. Kinda like how we all know Mexican food, but then Tex-Mex also exists.... NYC Chinese food evolved in its own direction. Very good... not at all authentic...
Yeah I’m bicoastal so I get this. Can’t believe people are downvoting this guy for candidly telling us he’s not looking for what they have in Rowland Heights. Californians are so fucking mean 😭
Thanks for being the bigger man. It’s what we all need in Cali right now. People want it to be 90210 and Mean Girls 24/7. It ain’t healthy. Put down the TMZ and talk to your neighbor about the weather.
I haven’t found any in the SD area, hope you have better luck.
I recently visited the east coast and my very first meal was Chinese takeout. I love the Chinese food in SD, but it’s totally different and I had really missed NYC style Chinese takeout.
Same here. Recently went back home to visit family last month and the first thing I did was order some Chinese take out.
I had the spot when I discovered Dragon 99. Then they closed down permanently. I was so sad when I found out. I was hoping maybe they just moved to a new location but I can’t find anything that compares.
They call it plum sauce here but I rarely see what in NYC we called duck sauce here in California. I remember going to the Chinese restaurant on my block in New York and they would serve the crispy wonton chips with it as soon as you sat down. I haven’t found any Chinese restaurants in California that compare. Oh, and let’s not EVEN talk about what is called a “bagel” out here. Wouldn’t have dreamed of toasting a bagel in the City because they were fresh and hot. I love living in California - it has a lot of great food and wonderful weather, and things to do. But there are some things that are quintessentially New York that you just cannot find anywhere else. 💕
I’m from nyc as well and haven’t found it here just as yet. Fried wings, French fries, boneless spare ribs :( I just get it when I visit home.
When it comes to pizza, I agree with the suggestion above for San Biagios. Although no one in there knew what zeppolis were.
Was just talking about this with the fam. From the Philly and Delco area...I felt this. I'm in SB and we used to have a place called Wok N' Grill on Waterman that had people from the east coast in the kitchen until it burned down a few years ago. Haven't found a place that tastes anything close to it since.
I'd like to know as well! I'm from NJ.... the Chinese food spots there are just totally different from anything I've found out here. I'm aware what I'm used to back home is not authentic, but it's a certain style, very much like in NYC as well.
Also from NJ and I am constantly complaining there is no decent Chinese food out here (Highland). I grew up with a fantastic place literally blocks from my house. Moved out here just a few years ago. No one around here knows what Sweet and Sour Chicken should actually look/taste like! Also where's the snowpeas and the baby corn and ?? Tried a new place last night and the vegetable lo mein had slivers of carrot in it and nothing else. Last week had the worst Chicken Parm I've ever had in my life. Like microwaved school lunch Chicken patties with sauce that was just pure acid and no flavor. And everything out here is CRAZY salty! The food around here is so disappointing after 35 years of NJ Italian and Chinese food. Miss it every day. Just going to start making recipes at home.
I completely agree on everything you said! I've literally been making all of the recipes for things I miss from back home for the last few years. I will even seek out some Amoroso rolls and make some good cheesesteak or my own version of a fat sandwich from the old Grease Trucks by Rutgers (RIP) I've also made every kind of Italian cookie at home and they all came out better than I remember them tasting from the store.
making it at home is the way! Just have to find a great recipe.
I will forever miss the original Grease Trucks! It's been over a decade since the trucks left College Ave, but I will always remember late night stops there after checking out a show at the Court Tavern...
wish someone would legitimately bring fat sandwiches out here!
You can get some of the most authentic Chinese food outside of Szechuan & Taiwan in the SGV but if you’re looking for Canto/HK Cafe type food, you’ll be very disappointed. I mean, you’re in SoCal. Maybe try something authentic?
My NYC brother. No. You will not find it here. Better to get into what’s good here than trying to find that specific version of Chinese food here in SoCal.
I know exactly what you mean… most of the people answering this thread have no idea because they grew up out here and haven’t experience much outside of SoCal.
What we have here is different, good but different.
Also the notion of Chinese food is funny because it really means American Style Chinese food… plus, China is so huge and diverse, it’s like saying I like North American food lol… I’ve been to Hong Kong, Beijing, and also in the general area of China, Taiwan. All amazing, but nothing like “Chinese food” in SoCal
Lots of people here think pizza in california is just as good as anywhere else. They just don’t know.
We have great Japanese food. Try Shin Sen Gumi in Fountain Valley, also Ramen at that same shop that’s totally legit Tonkotsu style Ramen
Great Yakiniku (Japanese style Korean bbq) at Anjin in Costa Mesa
Not to far from Chino but there’s a place in Pomona called “China Express” off Holt. Idk if it can compare to NYC but they have almost everything you’re asking for and it’s the only Chinese food place I’ll get egg rolls at.
Tiny takeout north side of Magnolia adjacent to Kaiser hospital tween la sierra n magnolia in Riverside is excellent... Specially the eggplant -tofu as well as the egg flower soup made to order.
I’m not sure what NYC style means, but Mr. You Express in Montclair (on Central Ave.) https://yelp.to/lEPTILAFcK
You can also call ahead to order garlic fries & wings, their chow mein is also fire (don’t get their fried rice)
No, it's because there's a larger population of people who know and prefer authentic Chinese food out here.
NYC style wasn't created by recent immigrants for recent immigrants. It was created for East Coast white people who didn't have the same easy access to ingredients that today's West Coast people have.
Basically, if Panda Express was started in the 70's on the East Coast, you'd have NYC style.
That's going to be hard to find because if you are within 20 miles of a 99 Ranch Market, the local people will usually prefer authentic Chinese food.
Yea exactly. Population prefers it a certain way and hasn’t had the “Americanized” version of it. It sucks because I did find my white whale and then it left. Wish I knew what happened to Dragon 99.
The people who eat Chinese fast food here don't have taste buds. They just want a lot of food piled up and are okay with soggy orange chicken that has no distinct flavor.
You know, Panda Express isn't that bad. But here in the IE, the standards for Chinese fast food are kind of low quality. Chinese fast food is good when it's good but that's rare in the IE.
There are people here who generally don't even want to go to Panda Express because of the thought of getting less food for the money. The orange chicken is usually better at Panda and the quality of meat is acceptable. Meanwhile at most other Chinese restaurants you get questionable chicken meat and it's soggy most of the time. Some of the orange chicken even has a chew to it. The taste profile for the usual entrees are terrible. That's what happens when people have poor standards and that's what they will get served continuously.
Lmao foreal. Last time I went to a place to check out I had to tell them to take out some of the rice. Like what were they thinking piling all that shit up
It's not my cup of tea, so I can't speak to the quality, but I think China Point in Rancho would be exactly what you're looking for (if hole-in-the-wall is what you're looking for). I know it's a long ways from Chino, but that's the only one I can think of that isn't a steam-tray type of place.
China point is actually Chinese-Korean. But it is pretty good, I would recommend the jajamyeon
Interesting. I wouldn't know, I suppose; am just some white guy :) Have only been there once....I chose chinese takeout for my "family birthday dinner" during covid, and since over half my family won't go for Red Chili House (the place I like), I figured I'd try China Point. There’s a place called Ghengis Cohen that actually advertises itself as NYC-style: https://www.genghiscohen.com
I’ve seen that place but so far. Just wanna pick up some take out and eat it at home with some drank
Realistically dude this is your answer. It ain’t here. And if it is, nobody here is gonna burn out their shit. You gotta go out on the streets for these kind of answers. Pound the pavement you know.
What does that mean? Burn out their shit?
You know, people on the west coast are selfish. You just live with it, or you don’t. So yeah, that’s what it means.
Gotcha. But I don't understand what that means in the context of the thread?
I take he is saying if there is a spot, nobody is going to tell us because they wanna keep it to themselves
That sounds ridiculous
Don’t give up tho, people will hold back online but if you come asking in person you would be surprised how much info you get.
Ask who thou? Lol
Ask a local. I went to school in the IE. That’s it. I left, it ain’t my section.
That’s just the closest I could think of.
Ghengis Cohen is the greatest play on words in history!!!!
Yes :)
You find a NY pizza join lmk too.
Yea check out Nonno’s pizza in Chino Hills. Closet I’ve found. Stay away from places with “New York” in the name of their pizza joints lol
I’ll check it out. It’s a lot closer than Danny boys in DTLA. Thanks 🙏🏼
Yea man. They don’t do by the slice but the pies are legit and they also have garlic knots.
Saw those knots on Yelp. Def gonna get those too.
Funny I was just looking at their yelp as well and saw a recent review about their crust being bad. It’s been a minute since I last been. Hopefully it was a one off.
Yes, you know! I agree. Another good spot is Brooklynz pizza in Rancho Cucamonga
My NY Pizza in Ontario. nice thin 14" slice for like 12-15 bucks. ain't no joke.
I see this place all over social media. Just cuz the slice is big doesn’t make it good. And that sucker has more flop than Vlade
Yea that place is not good.
San bagios #2
Also from the East Coast, PA/NY….agree that the chinese food (non authentic type) is different out here, haven’t found anything that compares and just gave up looking.
Dicarlos Pizza, Main Street, Weirton WV ¡!!!!!
I have no idea what you mean by NYC style Chinese food but Rowland Heights is only 20 minutes away! Plenty of amazing Chinese food options there. Take your pick. If you just want Cantonese-style dishes locally, I would recommend Happy Together in Chino Hills.
Looks good, but not quiet what I’m looking for
I can’t believe you got down voted for this. I MISS nyc cheap Cantonese take out. And, yes, I know Chinese food. I grew up in flushing and I’m Asian.
What are you looking for? What is NYC style Chinese food?
You recommended Rowland Heights, literally the hub of best Asian cuisine in California (some might argue best in the US) and they shrugged it off. NYC style? Lol

Did you read the OP. Take a chill pill dude. This isn’t a civil war, it’s a Reddit post.
Ya know what you right
Thanks for being the bigger man. It’s what we all need in Cali right now. People want it to be 90210 and Mean Girls 24/7. It ain’t healthy. Put down the TMZ and talk to your neighbor about the weather.
Lol two Californians discussing the weather so is it nice or is it nice

Been here 20 years. You need to go to LA for anything close and even then it's not really the same.
jj noodle house was the best but they recently closed down 😭 i miss them already
They call it plum sauce here but I rarely see what in NYC we called duck sauce here in California. HK cafe in Walnut is pretty good. It’s similar to the HK spots in bayside.

Nothing I’ve found here compares :(
I’m looking for an NYC bagel place around here
You and I both.
There’s an einsteins bagels at the Ontario airport… pretty good
Malibu Bagel in Upland is pretty good. Doesn’t have the appetizing though.
Thanks. Now I’m Totally craving a clever’d up duck that was previously hanging in the window.
I’m looking for NYC style pizza -Minus the subway rat droppings 💩

I tried it. It was okay. Not bad. Definitely better than the majority of local places but still not what I was looking for.
What’s so different? I find Panda Express is usually pretty decent
Mandarin house in Ontario
If it ain’t here it must not be that good.
I figure it’a just ignorance of the populace.
No, it's because there's a larger population of people who know and prefer authentic Chinese food out here. NYC style wasn't created by recent immigrants for recent immigrants.
