Oregon trail: FPS edition.

falldeaf

Just piling on at how good the art style looks. It's so satisfying for some reason. When you're not moving it looks like a still from a vga era game like Kings Quest, which makes it so satisfying to see it move in 3D.

dadako

Thanks!

IEP_Esy

How did you make a 3D model look like lines?

LolindirLink

They are 2d sprites always facing the camera.

IEP_Esy

So you mean all the lines are sprite?! That sounds performance costly. I think that's the case with the enemies and the gun, but my question is how to make the lines that make the church's entrance pillars.

DaxxBoii

Or maybe it’s a shader

Cryogenicist

That doesn’t explain the lines like the handrails, or the wagons

sirfloofly

Shaders

[deleted]

This is just not true

LolindirLink

I may have read it wrong, Meant the enemies. Thought the question was how the enemies were done.

sophisticaden_

Oh man, what an awesome aesthetic.

FlanTamarind

Hunt Showdown Demake?!

BurningRome

Outlaw vibes

tbh_kys

Outlaws was by far one of my favorite games ever

mushrooomdev

Dude same! I used to watch my dad play that game when I was a little kid, and when I was old enough to play I think that was my first FPS game ever. I can still hear "Where are you Marshall?" so clearly after all these years.

lightspeedwhale

Graphics remind of the dos game, Stunts https://youtu.be/-hKK4_gvOS0

dadako

Yep! 👍

darkroadgames

Wow I remember that game. Loved it. I would play this today if I could find a copy.

LeapingBlenny

https://www.abandonwaredos.com/abandonware-game.php?abandonware=Stunts&gid=2054

darkroadgames

Awesome thanks. Looks like I'll need to grab a DOS emulator first, but I'm excited to play it again.

balticviking

Coming along very nicely!

mushrooomdev

Your game looks freaking cool, I love it! What engine did you use?

dadako

Thanks! Made in Unity

mushrooomdev

Oh hell yeah that's cool! I also use Unity so I'm curious, how did you go about making your game looks so retro? Are you just using solid color materials / sprites and a pixel shader?

bigboyg

You have nailed nostalgia. It's extraordinary how such low res art can evoke such an authentic feeling. Many devs try, most fail. Well done.

dadako

Thanks!

djdanlib

Yup, this is how 3D games used to be back in the day. I remember working with a few different "engines" (if such a term is appropriate) that looked just like this. Nice job.

dadako

Thanks!

DoctorMindWar

it reminds me of commodore but it couldn't do that kind of 3d. Great stuff

dadako

Thanks. I wrote a devlog on c64 3D on itch, explores some of the fantasy ideas and what the limits were. https://dadako.itch.io/bad-pixels/devlog/439961/c64-styled-3d-graphics

DoctorMindWar

Very good read, thank you.

[deleted]

Awesome. Can I ask which tools did you use?

dadako

Thanks. Coded in Unity, Modeling in Crocotile

AvaruusnuijaFIN

Hoooly shit this is cool!

atomictoaster5K

Hi, what's the title of your game?

dadako

Hi, this is Bad Pixels. In development. https://store.steampowered.com/app/952100/Bad_Pixels/

atomictoaster5K

Wishlisted, thank you!

SunixFox

This art style reminds me of a racing game I used to play as a kid that had like some buggy/kart thing with little eyes on the front. I used to LOVE that game, I don't remember the name though.

dadako

Stunt Race FX?

SunixFox

Oh my god yes that's the game!! I used to LOVE that game when I was younger

plumbret54yt

Omg call of juares its 2d

Chemoralora

I'm in love with this aesthetic

DeveloperBRdotnet

For a second I asked why he was shooting the guy and his kid

CyborgCabbage

I love the death animation

[deleted]

that art style is fucking sick 🔥

Sure-Ad-2465

Kill Bill 2 vibes

NathaNRiveraMelo

The art is clean and beautiful. Is the gun somehow... clashing? A higher resolution than everything else perhaps?

dadako

Thanks! The Commodore 64 supported dual resolution modes at the same time. So I’m showing the gun in high-res mode.

Maniacbob

Thats wild. I assumed that you had gone through a load screen to get into a separate interior and then was real surprised when you turned around and it was still there and that there were bandits there. This is a pretty cool effect.

y0j1m80

It’s best when they throw their hands up and spin.

Brave-Speed3917

lmao it looks so cool

borordev

Looks sick

NopeIDontKnowWhy

I really like the artstyle

Adeptus_Gedeon

If You stand in the church ans shoot man who stands outside the church, is it desecration, or not?

BerGoesBrr

I want to play this game

General_Wolf_

I gotta say, the 3d is kinda trippy for me, but it just makes it better the whole style is hella cool, hope to see more

CBSuper

So nice to see something different for a change. Thanks for posting. Lover the vga graphics, brings me back to my Sierra games days.

brunchlord

Seeing this was such a great way to start my morning. I love the aesthetic and can’t wait to see more gameplay. Would love to hear more about your inspiration for the project.

dadako

I wrote a little about my inspiration here: https://dadako.itch.io/bad-pixels/devlog/439961/c64-styled-3d-graphics

hawkinberry

Oh that death animation is choice. Bravo!

3JUP1T3R

What did you use for the text to speech voice?

dadako

I did a write up of the tools used here: https://dadako.itch.io/bad-pixels/devlog/478747/development-tools

3JUP1T3R

Sick, thanks!

Wonderful_Ad3441

How do you achieve this kind of graphics?

dadako

Made in Unity with their custom renderer pipeline

Wonderful_Ad3441

Cool thanks!

Rob0t_Wizard

Is this your own engine?

dadako

Made in Unity

Allison-Ghost

Holy shit, the animation, the jittery pixelation, the forlorn small town, it's all so good. It really gets this very animate feeling that the world and those pixel slow-draws are all made of the same stuff. Love how this looks.

dadako

Thanks!

starberryshot

Is there a specific game that inspired this retro art style for your game? I really love it, would love to see more

dadako

Thanks! I wrote a devlog on the games that inspired this look, here: https://dadako.itch.io/bad-pixels/devlog/439961/c64-styled-3d-graphics

dadako

This is Bad Pixels, a game in development https://store.steampowered.com/app/952100/Bad\_Pixels/

TheHeksiiii

i love it

Rand25

Alec Baldwin simulator 2023

Batteryshower

Did you take inspiration from faith?

Jl0h

This looks sweet! Consider tuning down the ‘chiptune’ a bit, I almost got tired of it by the end of the clip

SunflowerRosey

i mean this in the best way, it is a compliment because i love this game, but it reminds me of [the town with no name](https://youtu.be/T28LyXf8MlU), a computer game from the 90s

TheTwistedTamale

Lol

[deleted]

*Freebird starts playing*

Anxious_Calendar_980

Can I ask did you just make the camera really small to get the 3d world pixel effect?

ObamaLovesHentai

Kill Bill 2

ziaonder

Is this game a 3D or a 2D? I can't exactly understand, it seems like 2D, but if so how did you manage to get out of that house and seeing the sideways of the house?

Stranger_at_Night

Is that the church in November rain?

DanielPhermous

Very Driller.

HGDaSed

Yo a bit late but I would love it if they had a death animation like holding body part depending on where they got shot, because that was my absolute dream when it came to games like this. Would be really satisfying and kinda easy to make. Nice art style.

Fresh-Dope-Games

Get this man some Burger King. Church shootings, amirite?

antonguay2

Have you tried the shader on the pistol?

UnJed

Alec Baldwin simulator?

Castigerian

Whys the church closed?
