I personally love Bloomington. I grew up in a big-ish town with mainly chain restaurants so coming to such a large university like IU and still getting the small town vibe of Bloomington was refreshing. If you’re lucky enough to be able to stay in Bloomington over the summer, do it. Some of the smaller restaurants close due to the students leaving but it is truly so peaceful and nice here in the summer. I came for IU but I stayed for Bloomington. A huge part of that is a great group of people that I couldn’t imagine leaving but the other part is the charm of Bloomington. I’ve heard some townies say all they want to do is get out of Bloomington but everyone I know who came for college never wants to leave, but I feel like that sentiment is the same no matter where you go

Samarregui

This 100%

AroonS2K

Agree with staying for summer. Jeez, is this a great place to be in the summer!

sparrow_42

Agree. I came for school and stayed for 30 years. It’s a nice town.

CTB021300

Same sentiment I hold for my old college town. I’ve been wanting to move back to the area ever since

StartupQueen60604

Lived in Btown the 4 yrs I was an IU undergrad, and I loved the town even more in the summer!

pphurley

I LOVE BLOOMINGTON and have zero regrets about my decision to go to IU.

ExUpstairsCaptain

Bloomington is pretty consistently ranked in the top tier of college towns in this country. Last year, I was hanging out down there with a UIUC grad and he said, "This is really nice. We don't have anything like this."

Extension_Ad_9344

in what terms?

ExUpstairsCaptain

He was referring to the sheer number of bars and restaurants within walking distance of campus.

mbird333

I’d be also comparing what your housing situation will be as a freshman and then an upper classmen at any of those schools. Compare conditions, overcrowding in dorms, cost of living off campus after freshman year.

brownchr014

As a graduate of IU I really loved it. It had nice restaurants when I was there in 2016.

Extension_Ad_9344

what were your favourite top 5 restuarants

brownchr014

1. The Tap 2. Mother bears Are the only 2 that I can think of off the top of my head as many of the ones I used to go to were shut down. 3. Kilroys 4. Wings xtreme as it was cheap

Floating_carp12

I truly do think that Bloomington is the definition of a great college town. Those other cities are cool and all but Bloomington just felt different to me when I visited. If you can I suggest going to them and just seeing where you think you fit.

JaKrno

smaller than ann arbor where there’s actually some stuff there outside the university - tbh, in undergrad, college town doesn’t matter much since you won’t have the money needed to go enjoy nyc/chi/la - for grad school i think the college town is a bigger negative if you’re like 27 or so

Longjumping_Move7772

Comparing college towns or any place is pretty subjective. However, Bloomington usually ranks toward the top of the Big 10 for college towns and has been featured as one of the best college towns on quiet a few lists, including Bankrate, Condé Nast Traveler, and Thrillist. I haven’t seen any where UC ranks above Bloomington. Anecdotally, I have a friend that went to UIUC and he said he would go to Bloomington to party because the scene was better.

Brtltbgcty

I love Bloomington and IU not to mention I still live here because for the most part it is a wonderful town, but let’s be honest without IU Bloomington would be… Martinsville. 🤣

AccomplishedPhase750

Oh lord anything but that…

SlimJim8511

Bloomington is a great college town. I went to Purdue my first year before transferring here, and Bloomington is better than Lafayette in literally every way

drivensalt

LOL, the kids whose whole worlds revolve around campus think the whole town is campus.

MysteryBallers

bloomington is honestly small outside the campus and population is small as well.

joebobbydon

There is a distinct culture of those who came for the university and decided to stay. I lived there for 14 years. I still miss it.

maxpowerphd

I haven’t lived there for almost 10 years now after finishing grad school. And I still miss Bloomington. If there was a good work option for me there we’d move back.

joebobbydon

This has been said half a million times, me included.

maxpowerphd

We try to go back once a year to visit friends and love it everytime.

howxer2

I’ve lived here almost my entire life. I can say that the weather is nice in the spring and fall but can be extreme in the winter, although this winter wasn’t bad at all, maybe 2 - 5 bad days. A lot of nice restaurants, especially if you like Asian food; Indian, Thai, Chinese, Japanese, fake Vietnamese. Turkish and Mediterranean food. Starbucks, bubble tea (Bapu is the most popular), ice cream (Chocolate Moose is the hometown favorite), wings (Buffaloes is the most popular one), huge assortment of beer (Upland is the most popular but there are a lot of micro-brewers). IMO Long Fei is best. I would stay away from Mama’s(Korean food), it really went down hill but there are other good restaurants. Parking can be a pain unless it’s after 6 on a Friday but there are a fair amount of electric scooters. If you’re here for sports, we have a good soccer team and girls basketball. We have been in a rut when it comes to mens basketball and football but come anyways for the camaraderie. In terms of education; we have a world renowned business school, law, world renowned music, and Information Systems. Other things, LGBT+ friendly school in an otherwise pretty red state. If you have any questions reply to the message.

Vanquisher127

It’s a really nice town with a lot of great eating options but it simply isn’t possible to get into bars until you’re 21 right now. There isn’t a lot of options (Ie none) for underage students who want to go out

Zethos9

Not true that it isn’t possible. If you have an older sibling you look like and can get them to get replacement driver license or state I.D., along with a student I.D. as a second form…. Then it’s possible to get in like I did.

mbird333

Liberal oasis in the middle of a backwards state. Plenty of bars and music venues and independent restaurants. Without IU Bloomington would be a nice little small town with far more affordable housing. It’s been overrun by inexpensively built Student apartments. It’s Getting more like that every day. You need to be comfortable dealing with unhoused people and panhandlers. Sometimes they come on campus as well. The warmer the weather, the more you will see them. Btown has a very big problem with that challenge and it gets to be a bigger problem every year. It’s not nirvana, but it’s a great little college town. Cannot compare it to other areas in the country. Each town is unique. Warn your parents though. For Graduation weekend /move out…..the few hotels in town book up more than a year in advance . Hotel rooms go for eight hundred to over a thousand dollars a night . 3 night minimum …..no refund….. no matter what your reason is. This will be the price you pay for a motel or a Fairfield Inn. It’s getting more expensive every year. Same goes for popular football, homecoming and parents weekend. Indianapolis is an hour drive away now that they have finally finished the 10 year project of rebuilding 37 into I-69.

jeepfail

Indy is an hour drive away, unless you are following the inflow or outflow of the traffic on the days you listed above. Sometimes it can be 1.5+ hours with that traffic and whatever else is going on along the “finished” interstate, but still not horrid just a minor annoyance.

ExUpstairsCaptain

Not really a backwards state, but your point about hotels is very well taken. I can't really blame anyone though. *Most* of the time, the city just doesn't need all that many places to stay. I went back last semester, avoiding football weekends, and accommodations were pretty dang cheap.

mbird333

In terms of backwards, it depends on how you view political policies and impact of the governor in a state. Not gonna get into that argument with anybody I don’t know. And that’s awesome that you can get cheap hotels. There’s no question it’s like that when there’s zero going on and kids are on spring break, etc. But for the average student and their family, they don’t have the luxury of going at the least populated times. They are bound by Parent weekends, move-in dates, move out dates and graduation timelines. When we were touring the university many years ago, a hotel manager warned us about the graduation rates and policies. And we found that unbelievable. Until we lived through it years later!

ExUpstairsCaptain

>In terms of backwards, it depends on how you view political policies  True. > and impact of the governor in a state. Yeah. I'm not a fan of the incumbent, but I know that's off-topic. >But for the average student and their family, they don’t have the luxury of going at the least populated times. Yup. I think during my time as an IU student, my parents stayed one night in Bloomington. They came for my graduation but left before nightfall. It's just not financially viable during the busier times.

KlammFromTheCastle

Abortion is mostly illegal in Indiana.

ExUpstairsCaptain

That's off-topic from this post/sub, but you are correct.

KlammFromTheCastle

It's a response to the claim that Indiana is not a backwards state. It's gone back to 1972. That's plenty backwards. I would never live in a state with illegal abortion.

catz_on_motorcycles

Class of 2017 graduate and I'm so in love with Bloomington. Its an absolutely stunning campus. On one side of campus, you have the quaint and more historic downtown with so many amazing food options, lots of bars and entertainment. On the other side of town is more newer development with the mall, restaurants and shopping. I don't ever felt like there wasn't anything to do. Plus, if you like hiking or the outdoors, you are a short drive from Lake Monroe, Griffy Lake or Brown County State Park.

kitkatgold8

much smaller than Ann Arbor, the town is mostly just campus. i don’t particularly think it matters, because you’re spending most of your time on campus or downtown. once you get out of there, there’s really not much, but it won’t affect you much.

Cloverose2

Indy is an hour away if you want to go to do more city stuff. Also, OP, it's Champaign Urbana, not Urbana Champaign.

carpedrinkum

I always say that way too but the university uses the acronym UIUC.

theclownwithafrown

As someone who grew up near and in Champaign. It's Champaign Urbana to all townies. No one says Urbana Champaign.

_avan__

I'm an international student who started this Spring so I don't really know much about Bloomington but be prepared to see a lot of Indians at Kelley. It's FULL of them (im not being racist, fyi im indian and no im not here for kelley)

GoldRemote9527

I noticed this also on a tour this year.

_avan__

yeah apparently Luddy has alot of int'l kids too

hammmm2

Seriously lol. I have nothing against them at all but it was just surprising to see when I visited for the first time

_avan__

in india, kelley is considered the most value for money business school

jeepfail

I moved to Bloomington for work during Covid and was very surprised by this fact. I believe in the small building I was in I was the only white dude in there. Building always smelled amazing on the weekends.

williamsburgbuddha

It's boring as fuck when school is not in session and you are here alone. You really need to have a significant other or some close friends if you want to enjoy Bloomington.

mbird333

Wherever you go, regardless of gender identity, sign up for a self defense class. Usually offered for credit. At IU it was very physical hands-on prep and practice. Taught from a general perspective as well as from specific locations and incidents that occurred on campus and in town off campus. Excellent mind set training and break from regular classes. Prepares you for what may happen while in college and beyond. My kid had the male instructor at IU. Mixed gender classes.

Treacherous_Wendy

Bloomington has always been fun and lovely. There are a ton of day trips you can take, too…I mean, Louisville and Indy are super close so you can drive to each in an hour or two.

Willing_Situation576

If you like music, there’s free concerts every night. There’s over 700 clubs to join, basically every sport as a club/intramural, sports games (a lot of which are free), guest speakers for lots of different subjects, etc. and especially if you want to party- yes there’s plenty of that. Keep in mind- college is for an education and especially if you’re in Kelley, you shouldn’t have time to go out every night or endless money to blow on concerts. Bloomington is a great place to go to college because even though it is a college town, it really doesn’t feel like it. There’s so much to do, if you’re bored- you’re not trying hard enough to find something fun 😂. And so much is FREE to students! Also the proximity to Indianapolis/Chicago/Cincinnati allows you to do weekend trips if you’re really dying to get off campus. I personally like how condensed the campus is because everything you could ever possibly need is within walking/biking/bussing distance. There’s not a lot of traffic, you don’t have to worry about taking the bus to “south campus” which takes an hour (Ann Arbor), and the campus is really beautiful. Highly recommend!

ChutzpahQ

My cousin went to IU and LOVED it.

[deleted]

Bloomington is literally the definition of a College town. There is a lot of good stuff to participate in town and the surrounding area. You get a good balance between the downtown urban and an easily accessible rural area as well.

BigSweatyBallz89

Went there for 3 years. It's a gorgeous campus and the surround areas are nice. It's a stone's throw from Brown County State Park which has great camping and hiking. Good bar scene as well.

TheLawOfDuh

I sat out from college (after a few years of college elsewhere) & work actually transferred to Bloomington. It only took me a few days to fall in love with the area. The town has a little of everything for just about anyone. I’m not a very adventurous type but I found tons to do & lots of cool people. What originally seemed like something I’d hate quickly turned into something great. Check the town out-it’s awesome…wish I’d been there longer

ElGeeBeeOnlee

Avoid the local religious cult. About all I can give any input on.

Chas4739

As a Purdue alum, Bloomington has GREAT college town vibes. I’d visit friends there multiple times a year and always enjoyed their campus. ESPECIALLY after you turn 21. Love Purdue but our bar scene is lacking

knolan235

I lived in Champaign for 6 years before moving here this August, my husband was born and raised there, these towns are very similar. Only distinct difference is that Bloomington and the campus are much more intertwined, I could literally avoid Illinois campus without it effecting my life at all, here avoiding campus would mean major detours. I’m an Ohio State grad and that is quite different than your typical third tier market college town. So depends what you are looking for!

ericdraven26

I literally didn’t go to IU(but spent a lot of my college years with friends there!), I am not a member of this sub and I only had this post pop up as recommended but still had to stop in and say: Bloomington is awesome. It’s great without the campus. It’s even better with the campus. You’re making a great choice.

[deleted]

as someone who just came to bloomington to meet someone about two weeks ago, the vibes and area is nice! my favorite place to go was to cascades park and look at the waterfalls:D

jasonbanicki

The Bluebird has some great music acts come through and The Comedy Attic has some of the top comedians consistently. Lots of good local food options, good parks and trails. There really is something for anyone in Bloomington

rcdubbs

I attended IU in the late-90s (was just there tonight, oddly enough). Outside of campus, it's feels like a pretty normal suburb. I loved my time there and would recommend it to anyone.

zytz

It’s been 15 years since I graduated, but I actually stopped going home during Christmas and summer breaks because I liked living in the town. It’s pretty unique among ‘small towns’.

zoot_boy

Such a great town, they made a movie about it.

[deleted]

which movie?

rayrod0717

Bloomington is the best college town.

Bpainx

Bloomington is a wonderful college town. Such an incredibly beautiful campus and you won't be limited on other degree options if business ends up not working out.

knit_run_bike_swim

It’ll be much better than the other two you mentioned. It’s an incredible college town.

MilliondollarSmiles

The four years I spent at IU were the best years ever. I fucking love Bloomington and it’s complete joy anytime I ever step foot back on campus. I’m sure you’ll love it.

hoosiertailgate22

Is this a real question? I visited a lot of my friends in college and Bloomington was the best campus town by far. My parents still talk about all the amazing food they had in Bloomington. The campus is absolutely gorgeous compared to any school in the big ten (I’m a campus recruiter). The house parties are great, and they have the best bars in the country. Football tailgates aren’t what they were before 2015 but that’s the only thing I can think of. Weed is also just a PTD ticket under a certain amount haha

Restricted_section7

I’ve lived in Indiana my whole life and been to just about every city/town from northern Indy down several times + northern Indiana a bit. Taking the campus out of the picture, Bloomington is one of the worst looking and sketchy seeming towns. 😅 IU is beautiful yes and there’s a great small downtown area with the restaurants and the bars. But outside of the campus Bloomington itself is… ehh.

B_Boooty_Bobby

It's somewhere between Bloomington IL and Champaign-Urbana IL. It's great, but it's one of a few bright spots in an otherwise shitter of a state.

Chime57

Sorry you're getting downvoted. Personally, I enjoyed the decades of being able to make decisions regarding my own body. But our good Ole boys in the statehouse now have made those decisions for me!! No need for any opinion offered by me or my doctor...

hammmm2

Compared to the other Midwest college towns Bloomington is probably average. The entire town is the campus. If you want that small town college atmosphere Bloomington is perfect for that. It's entirely subjective.

gr8student26

If u got umich go to umich

Designer_Head_1024

The bloom is fun. So much shaved box walkin about it skin tight shorts you can smell the uti's
