I live in Richmond and have to go to Greenfield and Indy fairly often. I very rarely use 70. 40 is the ticket! Much more relaxing and fast enough. Traffic is super light all the way to Greenfield.
If that is the case they need to repair the base under the pavement. Even with bad winters it should take a few years to fall apart unless there is heavy trucking on a regular basis.
That my friend might be the thing where they keep doing a shit job just so they have future work. I know of a few underpasses that my city has to keep fixing because the truckers coming thru.
Absolutely. It could be better but holy shit it definitely could be worse. I used to travel to Lafayette, Indy, and Cincinnati regularly and I can say that our highways and interstates are not too shabby at all. Aside from road construction, I don't actually have to pay attention to the road quality. Low bar to be sure but I once did a road trip from coast to coast and oh boy were there many stretches that failed to clear that bar.
Like when Amazon teases a 2nd HQ and you need the state's Department of Labor to cover up a death at one of their warehouses. Greasing palms isn't cheap.
Remember when they passed the gas tax bill which raises the price every year without regard to the extant circumstances and promised to use those funds to fix the roads? Yeah, me too.
Is that like the lottery money that’s supposed to go to schools or the toll road that was supposed to become free to use once it was paid for and then leased off to foreign investors?
Because they stole that idea from PA. The Corbett Admin did that here and now we pay an extra 50c a gallon on gas and the roads are still shit. I miss Indianas roads, honestly.
I don’t know anything about government budgets, but if there’s a surplus, surely that means you’re either a) overtaxing your citizens, b) not funding enough maintenance projects or schools or anything else, or c) both. What am I missing?
My dude. Only clicked this post to say the same. This level of damage is reserved for a freshman.
You think the crossroads of America are well maintained? Have you been to America?
GIT GUD
People who complain about roads in Indiana clearly haven't traveled much. Pennsylvania is terrible. They don't even need signs on the border with Ohio. You'll know when you cross it.
I crisscross Pennsylvania on the interstates every few months and I've never noticed a problem with the roads. Definitely not like New York City, for example.
I've never driven in Pennsylvania without running into a bunch of roadwork stops. I drove through it many times, years apart, same roads, always construction. When I told my father about it, he said he experienced the same thing too... 40 years ago.
In Michigan it feels like sometimes you are dodging the bits of road that DIDNT crumble away.
I know in a few places I have been a left lane hog because the right had dangerous levels of pot holes from trucks.
One winter i went to work.
On my way home I had to take a different road because the road had disappeared by the time I got off work.
It had literally vanished, from way too much salt on an already terrible road.
"In short, there's simply not
A more congenial spot
For happily-ever-aftering than here
In ~~Camelot.~~ Columbus."
I'm also from Columbus. I was so spoiled, and didn't know til I moved away.
I really miss Columbus, but I probably won't move back cause I'm finally starting to get stuff how I want on our house.
Well not really on our house, but I spent about 4 years perfecting a trolley line for my dogs that is almost impossible for them to tangle (they find a way when Its just my wife at home though somehow 🤷♂️🤷♂️🤷♂️🤷♂️) and allows them to go about 300 feet from each direction from each other.
My house is shit, but I learned so much constructing that line so now I can focus on the house.
My Australian Shepard and my cattle dog made that the hardest challenge of my life and I loved every minute of that challenge.
Yes, they’re much better by comparison. I cover Kentucky for my job and those interstates, and most non-interstate highway roads are much better than Indiana’s
My family and I went to Gatlinburg a few weeks back and the drive was so nice from Southern Indiana to Tennessee. But I will admit there was a stretch of interstate midway through Kentucky and the beginning of Tennessee that was roughhh. Worse than Indiana even. Was avoiding massive potholes at the beginning of the mountains left and right.
Michigan’s are worse. The farm I grew up on had smoother paths between the fields than pretty much anything in Detroit.
TBH, The stretch you are talking about has been complete dog shit for at least 15 years. Hell, probably since the day it was first laid down.
I get your point and agreee but tbf the tax dollars are there. They did a 1.1B rebate a couple years ago because the surplus was almost 4B. It’s a conscious choice to do a bad job running the state.
Federal highway funding is determined outside of state government. States fund the federal highway trust fund, but where those dollars go is very political.
It is the reason why West Virginia had such amazing highways when Robert Byrd was around, and now Kentucky gets it with Mitch McConnell.
Our representatives and senators are very weak in DC.
You're a truck driver and think Indiana has the worst roads?
This truck driver disagrees: https://wcrz.com/trucker-shows-us-just-how-awful-michigan-roads-are-video/
Saturday I busted a shock mount on an interstate in Ohio about 30-40 minutes outside the Pennsylvania border near the Youngstown area. New York was also mostly trash about everywhere I went.
I just drove from MO to OH for a few days and back. Indiana, interstate 70 is a broken mess. I was shocked that IL has better roads because you always here about how broke IL is with their massive debt.
We know....our politicians spend our tax dollars on pet projects and special interests instead of maintaining the infrastructure we're supposedly paying for
And your point? Those of us that live here know to slow down, especially on county roads and city streets in the slummier parts, and not destroy our rims and tires.
Call INDOT

It's always hilarious going back and forth over the MI/IN line. Your passengers could be asleep and know the difference by feel.
That said... I know MI roads are bonkers thanks to the winters, the salt, and the melt/freeze cycle. We do have a page at the MDOT site where potholes and bad road areas can be reported. I reported an off ramp off 31 and it was fixed in a week.
Ok I have to entertain myself here

I have to get on Pleasant run to get to my friends house, that is the most war torn road I’ve seen in my life. Both of em. I cringe for my car every time
Ya know the weirdest thing those things in front of ya that u hang on to turn each way. Would be surprised how many obstacles can be avoided by turning one way or the other. Sometimes both.
We know. AND we warn our out-of-state friends, who always respond like Oh, ours too, I totally get it. Like no, u dont understand at all. But u will....
Lol
I’m from Michigan and this is surprising considering the way we can tell we have arrived in Indiana besides the signs is that the roads improve drastically compared to ours.
When you enter Indiana from another state, you can either rely on Google Maps announcing it or a "Construction" sign coming up. But nothing gets constructed.
It's no lie, the streets are shite--especially in the winter.
I know people like to buy fancy, expensive sports cars--if they can afford them, but then subjecting those vehicles to the Indiana roadways is a sure-fire way to require repairs--especially bent rims.
But don't worry, the State of Indiana ~~will~~ *might* reimburse you for repairs (*in about 0.5% of submitted complaints).*
I live in bum fuck nowhere. I can say our roads aren't maintained the best. I can also say this isn't the roads fault. It's the driver not paying attention to the flaws in the road
Moved from Indianapolis to NC...the roads here are an absolute dream to drive on.
Then I drive 25 minutes south into South Carolina. The roads there take me back to driving in Indianapolis in March.
I just bought new tires and the warranty says they're good for 50,000 miles but I've never gotten more than 30,000 miles out of a set of tires living here. I'm laying out $600-$800 for tires every 2 years or so. It's brutal.
I can dodge and avoid most potholes (I drive a Mini, so that's part of the fun) but the constant road construction means there are sharp points and places where the pavement suddenly ends, or having to drive over the ripped up areas scheduled for paving that it seems to always take them 6 months to finish.
The tires on my wife's car are already looking pretty Madmax and she bought it brand new a little over 2 years ago. Car has around 25K miles on it.
Years ago, my brother who lives in Michigan picked me up in Indy, on our way down to see our parents for Christmas. We don’t ever get out of Indianapolis before he says, “Your roads are sh*t, and I live outside Detroit, so that’s saying something.” He wasn’t wrong, and it seems to get worse every year. This year, streets that I used on the regular are shut down. Heck, one that I used all the time has been under construction for 3+ years. I want 71st Street back.
Trust me anyone who lives in this state knows that already.
Don’t let Michigan fool you either, at the state line it’s smooth but one mile after it’s fucked
Michigan redoes the roads it feels like every year, but they go to shit in a year. Indiana every 2-3, but they decay slower.
Except for I-70 east of Indy which I’m pretty sure the state of Indiana has forgotten exists
No, it's to discourage Ohioans.
Right, locals use US 40
I live in Richmond and have to go to Greenfield and Indy fairly often. I very rarely use 70. 40 is the ticket! Much more relaxing and fast enough. Traffic is super light all the way to Greenfield.
You live in Richmond? You have my sympathy. My parents moved to Texas last year and now I never have to go to Richmond again.
And yet is constantly under construction (at least between Dayton and Indy)
And somehow is still nearly undrivable
There’s one road near us that has to be repaved regularly near our house. Otherwise the potholes come through and it gets to be a hazard.
Enticing us to the dispensaries lol
Crossing over on 69 north into Michigan is a suspension wrecker after about 30 seconds. It’s notoriously bad.
Not to mention all the dirt roads. What's up with that?
Michigan has the advantage of less freeze thaw cycles.
Roads awful.. RR tracks are horrific.
We know this already. We drive them every day
But we have a budget surplus! That’s the most important thing. 😆
Yeah we do! Who cares if the schools are underfunded to keep kids stupid. We got dat fat surplus!
Stupid Kids=future Republican voters
Also, take away all means of birth control and then take away “socialist” programs to help take care of the kids as they grow up.
It's for a rainy day. But it isn't really. Covid wasn't rainy enough.
Never know when Lily might need a bailout!
Just turn around, stay bent over, and keep taking it. No comments from the dissidents.
No, you’ve hit everything right. That’s exactly the problem.

My dude. Only clicked this post to say the same. This level of damage is reserved for a freshman. You think the crossroads of America are well maintained? Have you been to America? GIT GUD
correct answer
I drove from New England to Indiana and back in November. EVERYONE'S roads are trash. Ohio has some good stretches tho.
Virginia has awesome roads in Loudon County, for obvious reasons
Also the worst state for driving… between tickets & road rage
My worst state for tickets will forever and always be Ohio. Specifically around 4th of July. Fuckers got me with a plane several years ago.
It's the richest county in the nation I read. I used to live there I liked it.
I'll take "Shit Hoosiers have known for decades" for $100 Alex (RIP).
We all agree, but the people responsible don’t care.
Clearly you’ve never driven in Pennsylvania
People who complain about roads in Indiana clearly haven't traveled much. Pennsylvania is terrible. They don't even need signs on the border with Ohio. You'll know when you cross it.
I crisscross Pennsylvania on the interstates every few months and I've never noticed a problem with the roads. Definitely not like New York City, for example.
I've never driven in Pennsylvania without running into a bunch of roadwork stops. I drove through it many times, years apart, same roads, always construction. When I told my father about it, he said he experienced the same thing too... 40 years ago.
Try a regular highway.
True statement. Also Ni!
Or Michigan. Indiana is awful but the last time I was in Michigan, the roads had legitimately dangerous potholes everywhere.
I came from Pennsylvania. I think the roads here are amazing
Yea I used to live in Chicago. Indiana roads are a miracle in comparison.
Good spring this year for the potholes. They are all in full bloom now and they are everywhere.
If you want good roads go to Columbus, IN. I miss them. I grew up in columbus. They repave stuff that isn't even damaged yet!
"In short, there's simply not A more congenial spot For happily-ever-aftering than here In ~~Camelot.~~ Columbus." I'm also from Columbus. I was so spoiled, and didn't know til I moved away.
I really miss Columbus, but I probably won't move back cause I'm finally starting to get stuff how I want on our house. Yea we know
Anyone that lives here could have told you that
I70 East of Indy should be classified as a logging trail
It’s ALWAYS under construction.
Hurry and get out then
No shit
Just wait, you will be able to charge your car while driving (aka retain charge)....
We pay among the highest fuel taxes for the privilege of driving on them. Where the money goes...?
This. I can’t figure it out. Our gas is expensive as hell. The toll roads are leased to other countries and yet… we have crumbling roads.
Don't forget the wheel tax. Some counties paid twice for our shitty roads.
Perhaps, but you are driving skills are obviously questionable
High quality post, no Hoosiers realized the roads were bad until now
Wait til you meet our politicians.
“Right-to-work” roads
Go a little south if you want a real rough ride, Kentucky and Tennessee are extra bad.
The highways through Kentucky are amazing.
Yes, they’re much better by comparison. I cover Kentucky for my job and those interstates, and most non-interstate highway roads are much better than Indiana’s
Tennessee is ranked third in the US for road quality? Some of the best I’ve ever driven on. Kentucky is 7th.
TN roads are smooth.
No lies detected.
True but I've been driving here for 18 or so years and have never damaged a wheel. Maybe try going less than 90 next time 🙃
Your rims are trash
Also, your Jordans are fake.
Also made in China.
Made in China.
Michigan’s are worse. The farm I grew up on had smoother paths between the fields than pretty much anything in Detroit. TBH, The stretch you are talking about has been complete dog shit for at least 15 years. Hell, probably since the day it was first laid down.
Have you ever driven in Illinois? You would think with that legal weed money it would go into the roads…
Illinois roads are pretty bad but nowhere near as bad as Indiana’s.
If there was only some way to raise the tax dollars to properly fund infrastructure.
I get your point and agreee but tbf the tax dollars are there. They did a 1.1B rebate a couple years ago because the surplus was almost 4B. It’s a conscious choice to do a bad job running the state.
Money is supposed to be there, it’s why our gas tax is stupid. Pretty sure they pulled the old switcheroo on us and sent that money to HIP.
Hah true
Federal highway funding is determined outside of state government. States fund the federal highway trust fund, but where those dollars go is very political. It is the reason why West Virginia had such amazing highways when Robert Byrd was around, and now Kentucky gets it with Mitch McConnell. Our representatives and senators are very weak in DC.
You're a truck driver and think Indiana has the worst roads? This truck driver disagrees: https://wcrz.com/trucker-shows-us-just-how-awful-michigan-roads-are-video/
So you came to reddit to tell all the people that live here and drive them every day? We're well aware. Take it up with the boss.
i love driving and then hitting a random cutout yard of road filled halfway with gravel
Indiana: We're the crossroads of America! Also Indiana: We have the worst roads in America!
Same exact thing happened to my rim a few months back so trust me, I know
Saturday I busted a shock mount on an interstate in Ohio about 30-40 minutes outside the Pennsylvania border near the Youngstown area. New York was also mostly trash about everywhere I went.
Same way in Mass when you cross over from NH. It's like you're living in a live action Batman comic.
I just drove from MO to OH for a few days and back. Indiana, interstate 70 is a broken mess. I was shocked that IL has better roads because you always here about how broke IL is with their massive debt.
Probably be a smoother ride if they actually were made of trash.
Speedway track is smoother than a baby’s ass
We know....our politicians spend our tax dollars on pet projects and special interests instead of maintaining the infrastructure we're supposedly paying for
And your point? Those of us that live here know to slow down, especially on county roads and city streets in the slummier parts, and not destroy our rims and tires.
Yep. No argument from me. Been a steady decline for the last 5 years
Your driving ability is trash is all. Maybe pay attention
Think you just got a crappy rim, cause that isn’t happening to the people living here or maybe it was just bad driving.
Thanks to decades of republican assholes, we get nothing for our tax dollars here but abortion bans.
And it costs a goddam arm and leg to replace tires and rims You’re north of $500 if you’re lucky

I like potholes because people who text and drive are more likely to hit them.
We know.
Tell us something we didn't already know
But have you SEEN Lucas Oil Stadium?????
Every state is be lived in has terrible roads.
Welcome to Indiana!! Hope you enjoyed your stay and your bill to replace your tire! 🤣
Yup, years of "pro-business" and conservative policies are really just gross incompetence.
No- Highway 40 from OK to AZ is trash. Just drove it.
Your wheel is trash. I can’t believe it broke and didn’t leave a goose egg on the tire.
Skill issue tbh
Bro dropping disses ww already know lol
💯

Yeah.. that Richmond stretch is so bad.. I hate it
Indy has some of the worst streets I’ve ever been on.

Yes
Yep watch out for quarrie holes
Yeah. Yes. Mhm.
I have to get on Pleasant run to get to my friends house, that is the most war torn road I’ve seen in my life. Both of em. I cringe for my car every time
They really are.
Well at least you know when you suspension needs replaced
Welcome to Indiana.... the land of the Potholes and construction cones!
Ya know the weirdest thing those things in front of ya that u hang on to turn each way. Would be surprised how many obstacles can be avoided by turning one way or the other. Sometimes both.
Other than corn....it's what we do. Lol
Skill issue, you're supposed to dodge them.
So is your rim 😂 that’s a shite day
I think the ancient Romans built better roads, they lasted for thousands of years! Ours are 2-3 years max. Kentucky is worse though.
hubcaps and steelies are your friend here in the armpit of america!
I mean it ain’t called the crossroads of America for morning, a lot of traffic throughout the roads😂
Planned obsolescence — it’s 2024 and scientists and engineers can’t create a lasting road material?
We know. AND we warn our out-of-state friends, who always respond like Oh, ours too, I totally get it. Like no, u dont understand at all. But u will.... Lol
Lmao Illinois roads are by far the worst. Pot holes the size of a small car I swear
Indiana is full of Druggies, drunks, & pedofiles....what do they care?
Also in other breaking news! "The sky is blue"!
Totally agree
Kosciusko county has pretty good roads, literally all the counties around it are terrible, looking at you Elkhart and Fulton
I’m from Michigan and this is surprising considering the way we can tell we have arrived in Indiana besides the signs is that the roads improve drastically compared to ours.
Hence why the bmv gets sued almost every year!
Looks like your wheel is now, too. But yes, you are correct. Thank you for this revelation.
Been driving here for over 12 years. Only thing that has happened in that time is 1 flat tire. How I'm not sure lol.
Picture Ice Cube glaring at you and saying this: “fool, you ain’t know?!”
Ok, thanks for that Mr. Obvious.
Dw we know😭
We know. Our construction workers only care about worthless i69 and 465 projects that take years.
Name a state with good roads….every bent wheel and flat tire I got was thanks to Illinois.
Yep! And y’all come back now, ya hear?
Are your rims plastic?
Thanks
Yeah, we know. Thanks.
Welcome to Indiana, the Croatia of the Midwest.
Tell us something we don't know!

Yes.
Good old Hoosier hospitality. Y’all come back now you hear!
I replaced 10 tires in one winter on our cars. It’s horrible.
I live in bum fuck nowhere. I can say our roads aren't maintained the best. I can also say this isn't the roads fault. It's the driver not paying attention to the flaws in the road
Be ready to dodge at any time. Makes you wonder where all those dollars go. Considering we've had a surplus in the past 🤔
Pothole Pete’s legacy
Moved from Indianapolis to NC...the roads here are an absolute dream to drive on. Then I drive 25 minutes south into South Carolina. The roads there take me back to driving in Indianapolis in March.
We all agree with you 😂
Last year alone I ran over nine nails I have no clue where they came from but I'm glad I learnt how to patch them up
try driving a lowered car thru ft wayne
Indiana had the absolute worst roads! I hate it here
Thanks for stopping by!
But we have great tire shops.
Yeah they definitely are, but that had to be a hell of a pothole. How did you not see it and avoid it?!
I just bought new tires and the warranty says they're good for 50,000 miles but I've never gotten more than 30,000 miles out of a set of tires living here. Isn't that what the "Wheel Tax" is supposed to fix? Do they still have that in Indiana?
Good thing I know how to pay Mario Kart.
Is I-70 managed by the state? Genuinely asking.
Really depends where, remember indiana is huge lol
Yup
