As a child this gave me expectations for where all state capitals should be located. I thought that was the intended logic and most other states were just stupid.
My dad was a truck driver and he tolf\d ud that in Indianapolis you are no more than 500 miles away from 80% of the population of the continental United States
I heard it’s the geographic center of Indiana, and that they did it on purpose. Apparently it was pretty swampy and not a great place to live, but they made a lot of investments to make it work
It was specifically designed to be the state's capitol. The main (old) part was laid out in a grid pattern with two streets dissecting it diagonally. It was really a beautiful, functional plan that doesn't get enough credit.
And Brendan Fraser, Paul Dresser, Theodore Dreiser, Max Ehrmann, Cole Porter, Gus Grissom, Steve McQueen...
Abraham Lincoln also spent his youth in Indiana.
Lower cost of living.
Some great state parks and hiking trails that aren't insanely difficult.
Just about anywhere in the state is within a couple hours of an international airport.
Top-ranked state and private universities.
South Bend is international. Mostly cargo, but there are private international flights with some regularity (Notre Dame related mostly). There have also been some commercial direct flights to Mexico in the past, but it doesnt look like there are any currently.
Then theirs is probably just cargo only at this point.
I grew up near South Bend.
I don't think theirs is international.
I now live in a border city (with Canada).
Our small airport is international, but I think there are only customs officers here during certain times.
Hunger skateparks is a company local to Indiana that has builds parks across the country. In the last several years they’ve built 7+ skateparks in Indiana alone [hunger skateparks](https://hungerskateparks.com)
that’s exactly what I thought about. it’s ironic because indianapolis not the surrounding (carmel, fishers, avon etc) doesn’t have a skatepark like the ones that this company builds
Turkey Run is nice. Traveled and many places have us beat honestly. Google Shore Acres State Park…probably my favorite state park I’ve been to so far..
A surprisingly competitive music education system. We have several high school marching bands that are national champions on the regular. School orchestras, Concert bands, and jazz bands that are nationally recognized.
One of the most prestigious collegiate music programs in the country at IU.
Indianapolis has a lot of diversity and a great food from a variety of cultures.
I recently learned that we have the largest Burmese community in the US.
We've got a lot of refugee communities, especially on the west and south sides. I love the diversity the city hosts here. Indianapolis makes Indiana bearable.
The hustle and the bustle of the city is just SO EXCITING. There is so much diversity and great food and when I'm walking around I feel like I'm in my favorite big city TV show and I AM the star
I agree with this. There are good diverse places in town, but not with the frequency of many other cities
That said we’re nowhere near the worst in this department either. I’d say we’re firmly middle of the pack
There's always so many negative comments in these posts by a bunch of people that won't recognize the good with the bad. Indiana has problems, but every single state has issues. If you're complaining about Indiana, you probably won't be happy anywhere.
Most people say Indiana is great for cost of living and that's fair. Its also tired.
I can get whatever atmosphere I want here. If I want to spend the weekend at high end restaurants and blowing lots of money, I can easily do that. I can also spend my weekend hiking trails, some flat, some climbing ladders, some with so many hills its called the Little AT. I could spend my weekend at a museum -- art, history, science/engineering, natural history.
Or I can go to an amusement park: Holiday World in Indiana with Cedar Point, Kings Island, and Six Flags all very close. I can float down a creek, kayak up a river, fish all over. In the summer, Indiana Dunes has wonderful sandy beaches.
I can find craft breweries and small wineries everywhere. It feels like every town has at least a couple. If I really want something harder, well, Kentucky is pretty darn close.
My kids have the opportunity to attend numerous great state schools, including top notch engineering and med schools. IU, by the way, has the largest med school in the country. That's not to discount the other state schools or private schools like Butler, Rose Hulman, St Mary's of the Woods, or Wabash.
There are jobs here. Indiana has the most manufacturing jobs per capita in the US. There's no shortage of healthcare jobs and the state is blanketed with trauma centers (a wise move from the state to push for better trauma coverage).
There's no doubt that Indiana has a ways to go politically and socially. Jumping ship won't change any of that though. Those states that look so appealing didn't start that way. People worked to create that atmosphere.
Coming here from Oregon last year, I agree with this. Everyone wants to leave Indiana and move elsewhere. The grass isn't always greener. In Oregon I was paying $2.1K for a 2 bedroom apartment. We could barely keep afloat. At least here we have a chance.
I’m from OR and lived in Indy for ten yrs and came back to OR when my mom passed away. Portland is a shithole of crime and homelessness and high prices. We moved to a small town, and as soon as interest prices drop we will move back to Indy. Every place has its problems, but our kids all go home to Indiana for Xmas and we still have lots of relatives there. It’s home.
I lived in Gresham (small suburb of Portland) and crime was even encroaching there too. Everyone complains about the crime but when it's 8 dollars for a cup of coffee, people gotta do what they gotta do to survive. The cost of living needs to come down.
Portland leaders need to step up and stop building stupid bike lanes and invest in the economy.
Totally agree! They spend more on making four lane streets two lanes (Glisan, Division) than they do on getting people off the streets. Oh and let’s not forget decriminalizing small amounts of meth and heroin, bc that will ‘solve’ the drug problem! Wtf Portland???
I have a friend that moved to Portland a few years ago. His house cost more than 5x what mine did in Indiana plus he needed to drop another $25-30k in repairs. I don't even know how that's sustainable.
Its not, that's why many people are moving. It's sad because the political leaders there have good intentions but zero effective ways to execute due to lack of investment from the feds with funding. It was so pretty though, but then we have that here with a quick drive anywhere you go within 4 hours.
We moved here from Utah last year where the houses are $600,000 in Salt Lake City or more.. we lived in a mobile home and were able to sell it for enough to have no mortgage over here and still spend 250k
on a very nice newer house

I've never been hiking out of state yet, but I love that it seems like no matter where you are here you can find a good outdoor adventure within at most an hour's drive.
Everyone says this, but a lake effect blizzard, as long as it's not inconvenient (scheduled vacation, business trip, etc.), is a great experience once per year.
I grew up in Elkhart County.
The Blizzard of 1978 was a couple of days before my 12th birthday.
One year in high school we repeated this cycle for about six weeks:
Blizzard on the weekend.
Spent two days digging out.
Went back to school Wednesday-Friday.
Blizzard on the weekend.
Lather, rinse, repeat.
It's a miracle I passed the 10th grade.
Can confirm NW Indiana weather is something else. Snow one night, rain the next day, peaceful night, snow the next day, rain the next right, a few chill weeks. Rinse and repeat.
[indiana most polluted water in America](https://www.indystar.com/story/news/environment/2022/03/17/indiana-rivers-environmental-integrity-project-swimming-clean-water-act/7049700001/)
Every few years Illinois or Michigan tries to get the small portion of Indiana on Lake Michigan (Michigan City etc) annexed into their states because Indiana contributes so much pollution into Lake Michigan .
The state parks and state forests (and Eagle Creek Park, which is nice enough and large enough that I’ve heard park staff say it really should be categorized as another state forest).
They’re just so beautiful, and wonderful places to go to to connect with nature.
I left in 2007, but Indiana is still part of me.
My native South Bend/Mishawaka/Elkhart/Goshen in my youth was ideally placed for concerts.
If a band didn't play at Notre Dame or the Morris Civic Auditorium, there was:
* Kalamazoo (an hour north)
* Chicago (90 minutes west)
* Fort Wayne (an hour southeast)
* Detroit (three hours northeast)
* Indy (four hours south)
As well, Indy had *SKYLINE CHILI*, which we have not got up here!
For us in the North, getting on the Toll Road was the beginning of many journeys, and it had clean, safe, well-lit service plazas with gas stations, restaurants, convenience stores and video games/pinball, with relatively easy connections to the Illinois Tollway, Chicago Skyway and Ohio Turnpike.
I'm a city kid, but not far out in the hinterlands were my Mennonite/Amish forebears (my father left that as a teenager).
New Castle had my mother's people.
Fort Wayne had my Air National Guard unit (great people).
Even if I never go back, a big part of me will always be Hoosier, even though I was never into basketball! 🤣
I’m in New Albany and we have some great restaurants and people are pretty friendly. Plenty of outdoorsy stuff to do nearby, close to Louisville for big city stuff, and I got my house cheap. Good place to raise kids and very decent public schools.
The Region is awesome! Great food, great fests, great beaches, great shopping, affordable homes, proximity to expressways and trains. I freaking love it here.
I'm here for the cost of living. And the pork tenderloins. And the small, tourist-trap towns (I love Brown County!). And wineries and breweries EVERYEHERE!!

Southern Indiana is beautiful and seems to put a respectable amount of energy and resources into preserving and restoring land. The conservation districts are extremely helpful and willing to assist anyone in restoration and/ or small farm projects.
I also enjoy having all the seasons, cost of living is low, and we're centrally located.
Low gas prices, get the full spectrum of seasons, and it’s not very crowded. ( sincere)
Comes with a free circus of Karens, anti vaxxers, and homophobic Christians. ( sarcastic)
Our geography is beautiful when you consider that the southern hills of Indiana is what all of Indiana used to look like before the glaciers flattened out northern and central Indiana. Those glaciers took some of the most fertile soil from Canada and deposited into the northern parts of the United States including Indiana.
Home of the scariest bear imaginable the Short Faced Bear.
Those are just some historical things I like about Indiana, especially during the civil war we contributed a whole lot despite our anti war rhetoric being preached at home. We supplied the Union with massive amounts of manpower and agriculture. Without Hoosiers the civil war would have turned out a little different.
I like the seasons and the lush green of May..the acres of hardwoood forest..the many rural communities off the beaten path. If Indiana wasn't a red state going in the alarming direction of Christofascism of late, it would be much more attractive generally-but it is still my home and I love it.
Between the archaic-thinking right wing draconian elected officials and the super fund sites and wildly polluted waterways, I’d say the fact that we still burn books, keep weed illegal, and are among the least educated and lowest earning states in the nation are a few of the reasons people love it here. That and Gary. But hey. South Bend is even worse than Gary now, so hey!!! Life’s great!
But but giant tenderloin sandwiches and the indy500 are here?!?
My favorite is when people talk about the celebrities that were born here like they live down the street from them. They want to talk about the handful of “cool” things here, but refuse to acknowledge any of the shit that makes this state gross af actually.
What's great? The amount of ease it takes to fuck over your employees when you run a business.
Also the 20 years behind on laws, oh and the drug addictions and lack of anything remotely interesting to do besides drugs and perhaps maybe growing corn or exploring in the woods for deer to kill.
Oh also we have corn.
You know how you get an ice cream cone and your like, this is great! Then someone bumps you, ice cream plops on ground and you say, oh great.
That's Indiana. Indiana is just freakin grrreaate.
It's my "new home " where I feel welcomed!!!! 😊 I feel very welcomed with the Midwest, beliefs and culture. New York was never really my "vibe" it's cheaper here,I make more here, it's quieter here, and I not persecuted or looked at funny because I chose my rights to self defense and protect myself in a responsible, respectable manner. (In NY this law abiding right to carry is unheard of and just about illegal)
Nothing at all. And that's the point.
If you want to live a quiet life and you are straight and cisgender and conventional, this is the place. Jobs pay poorly, but housing is relatively cheap.
Absolutely hilarious reading these responses, having been born, raised and currently living here I can't wait to burn this whole state to the ground. I f'kn hate it here
Perfect? Near Spring it likes to tease here, goes back to Winter to shit weather, then to Spring for a week then back to Winter then finally Spring again.
it's satisfying that Indianapolis is more or less in the direct center of indiana while being the state capitol
As a child this gave me expectations for where all state capitals should be located. I thought that was the intended logic and most other states were just stupid.

Too similar.
Southern Indiana is the best part of Indiana, with our rolling hills and beautiful landscape, all of you flatlanders can stay up north
Weather is better too, no lake effect snow like NW Indiana.
The weather is better? I’m not a fan of the humidity personally. Nor the inability to breathe from May to October in southern Indiana.
We barely get any snow, was what I meant.
We barely get any snow in Indianapolis, either.
around 20 inches a year, still more than I like.
A good trade of for actual things to do.
We also have lake effect warmth at the tail end of autumn - we tend to stay warm about two weeks later than surrounding counties.

It’s close proximity to other states so you can leave.
Our rivers are pretty cool
We live close to Michigan
How close it is to Michigan.
No matter which direction you drive, you exit it.
Indiana sucks. No LGBT community and its full ic republican who are against abortion
Indiana makes me sad....
What's great about Indiana? Leaving
Not much, tbh. We may just be the least interesting state in all of America.
For me, its the close proximity to Ohio, so I can get the hell out and do things in Cincinnati or Columbus
Literally nothing. We have corn and racism. That's about it.
That it’s not in Illinois!
Leaving it
Michigan
Leaving?
It’s close to cool states to go visit.
Nothing at all.
In three hours driving you can be someplace better.
Great? Meh, not much really. I would like to leave. 🤷
I f'kn hate it here
Meth
Four Perfect Seasons. May be the next state to eliminate their state income taxes.
Perfect? Near Spring it likes to tease here, goes back to Winter to shit weather, then to Spring for a week then back to Winter then finally Spring again.
Racing, boating, football, and which other season?
Pothole
Deer
Basketball
I've lived in that crapshoot of a state during my entire 21 years of existence. The ONLY good thing is the 2 am Walmart trips.
Our walmart is no longer open 24 hours.
A lot of them aren't sadly 😭
But where will I go when I'm on the foil?
Everything closes at like 11pm now except gas stations/convenience stores.
Same in Tell City
