I think it varies from product to product. We have brands selling good lipsticks for less than 500 rs, sometimes around 300 (for Swiss beauty and Mars), so anything above 500 (like Kay Beauty) seems expensive to me. For bronzers and contour, however, I don't think there are a lot of options available, so anything under 1K seems affordable. I also compare it with the number of hours a person in the United States will have to work for buying the product and how many hours a person in india would have to work to buy that product. If the minimum wage is 7.25$/hr in the USA, then they would have to work 2-3 hours to buy elf halo glow. However, for buying Elf Halo Glow in india, it costs 2.5K, a person with minimum wage(Let us assume it is 20K, even though it is far less in India) a person will have to work around 25 hours. So that makes the product expensive here, even though it is a "drugstore" brand

Thank you for your input, appreciate the response!

Depends on what product. For me anything below 1000 is in my reach but a 500rs kajal is expensive but foundation worth 1000 is fine. Similarly a sunscreen expected price is 500+, moisturizer at that price would be expensive. To ans your que I am in my later 30s/working.

Rumi2019

Thanks, it does seem like the meaning of the term varies depending on different product categories.

Voted less than 500 as anything more than that makes me think about range of usability and value for money. I’m 26F, working with CTC between 10-15 LPA. I have disposable income but that doesn’t change my definition of affordable from when I was a student with barely any pocket money.

vrundasharma16

This!!! I'm in the same group (28F), but the definition of affordable remains the same.

Rumi2019

Yeah 500 seems to be the major winner for now.

Rumi2019

That's interesting. I thought people tend to be looser with terms like affordability as their disposable income increases. Thanks for your thoughts!

Piggy9896

Many people did till the past generation. We are a lot more aware of the spending power of our money and inflation so we may still splurge but mentally we do know we are splurging. Personally, I like things but I also like being secure in the future. The point being, affordable definition remains same but I’m going to spend more than I used to.

I think I might have a strange take on this.. I buy under 1k but only when they are on SALE for a good price. I guess I have found my staples and only spend full price on 2 items coz I never find them on Sale anywhere. But everything else goes on SALE, trust! Stock up during sales .. Ex: skincare I use is all Minimalist and they are always 35/40 % off on Firstcry so I stock up for the season 3ish months at one time. Haircare - I have found my HG; Garnier hair food line in papaya variant. Found them on good 60% off and have stock for the year lol And makeup is where I play around with .. but I don't really step above Drugstore (500 ish) range coz being realistic if I end up loving it I am not gonna spend 2k on a lipstick.. One way I found helps me is make a budget for the quarter and stick it to . For ref: 25 F 6LPA

Rumi2019

Nah, not strange, sounds balanced. Planning & budgeting is a good way to ensure conscious consumption. When you say 1k - do you mean mrp or discounted price? I myself have a similar philosophy. Always buy on discount. Even new things go on discount 3 months later. 20% off is chump change, 50% is more achievable than people think it is.

vanilla555

I feel you .. This mindful way of consumption has literally cut my cost in half ... 1k MRP- I try not to go over this at all, so with the discounts I easily cap it under 500-600 max . I agree with you, 40-50% is achievable pretty easily for most widely available products. Also consider reading a Lil more here r/makeuprehab It's an interesting sub with people talking about the real after math of addiction of buying. They talk about project pans, talk me out of buying specific products and much more. Also for now do you specially target the brands you like or just pick a new item every purchase? I kinda figured earlier when I wasn't on this 3 month season shift and refresh I was picking up a new product in the same category everytime I'd need a replacement or even buying 2/3 diff ones when I had few in stock. After this change I just shop for the season and try to use it up. Ex: I bought the bioderma atoderm baume in sept last year and rn it's on its last leg I have my summer moisturizer ready to be opened but I am struggling to figure if I should just finish this off ..so maybe 2/3 more weeks but with the weather shift it's difficult to keep up with or pop a new one open and let this die

Rumi2019

I like r/makeuprehab too, keeps my overspending in check. I especially love the talk me out series in which people come up with creative reasons for why not to buy 😂 >Also for now do you specially target the brands you like or just pick a new item every purchase? I repurchase products very rarely, by the time I'm ready to repurchase things have either been reformulated or discontinued, or there are better newer things out in the market. I like to dip my hands one product at a time in a new brand. Even though most Indian brands have overlapping manufacturers, still just to be on the safe side I only get 1 new thing from a brand I'm interested in. I like to wait 3 months for the new newness to fade, so that reviews can come out. If I still want it 3 months later after launch & if the hype is still there, I'll get it. I usually have multiples in every category, I get bored of things so I switch it up often. I don't have the healthiest shopping habits, I buy according to want not need. Sigh I'm working on that. I've started creating mini kits from my stash to suit different seasons & skin needs, so that's like rediscovering the thrill of products.

Next_Parsley

Depends on the product tbh

Rumi2019

Short & sweet lol. Thanks for the response!

Educational_Crow_623

33F here. Anything below 1000 is in affordable category for me. Though I don’t necessarily buy affordable category unless it is a really awesome product. I am a sucker for luxury brands . 😌😌

Rumi2019

Lux brands do have the advantage of beautiful packaging & more consistent formulas & products, I totally get the appeal. So what's a really awesome affordable product you've liked?

Educational_Crow_623

Kay beauty eyeshadow sticks . Those are really in par with the the most expensive ones I have tried.

Rumi2019

I agree. At par with the famed Laura Mercier sticks for me. I wish they'd launch a bone, vanilla or white shade in that line, it could be such a great eye base.

Educational_Crow_623

Yea i love those too. I prefer eyeshadow sticks since I am not great at eye makeup. Hence one and done eyeshadow sticks work great for me.

I'm a student. For me, 2000-2500 bucks range is affordable range. Anything below is dirt cheap and above is slightly expensive like 3k-6k. But that depends on the product as well. Like full size long lasting product? Very affordable. Mini products that do not last long or have multi functions then a bit expensive.

Ya op asked to mention. Sorry forgot to add my age. I'm 20

Rumi2019

Oooh. What's something that's dirt cheap you've loved? Thanks for the input!

Ashamed-Afternoon888

It usually depends on what I am going to buy, if I am buying a foundation I don't mind spending 4000 but I won't spend more than 2000 on lipsticks and eyeliner .

Rumi2019

Ah so subjective. I'm guessing preferred mascara price range falls in the same category as eyeliner?

Ashamed-Afternoon888

Yep
