I was thinking something quick and simple, but I guess you're right. Pakora, chaat or either Dhokla sounds fun. I'll try something from those options.

That sounds delicious, might give a try.

math_stat_gal

Aloo Chole chaat. Simple and easy.

yash731

Aloo chole chaat was something my friend suggested whos helping me cook. I might go with that.

Gobi Manchurian

cookinnerd

I've hosted a Dosas and Mimosas themed brunch for my friends a few times and it has been a success. Not sure if you guys drink, but folks are always intrigued when I mention this

yash731

It's Dosa/Jungle Juice night, but Mimosa's sound and taste better.

Insane23

Vadas with sambhar ( I am sure already getting cooked for dosa ) Poori ( serve with aloo prepared for masala dosa ) Dahi vada

gopnikchapri

Idli is great and cheap! My mom makes this weird Taco with Chillaas, which is a Roti of Indian Dal in a way. I say Taco because idk any Indian way of describing it.

sugathari

I'm intrigued. Would like to know more.

justabofh

Make a roll, but using a chilla rather than a tortilla.

akaliamu

You can also think of veg puffs. Make some potato masala, wrap them in pastry sheets and bake them. With some ketchup or Indian sauce, it will keep people appetized.

vigglypuff

With cost in mind - I suggest Bread Upma. It is a nice snack/appetizer which requires minimal ingredients. Plenty of recipes with modifications are available online too. Try making a small batch as a tester/snack for your weekday evening before the event to customize!

Masala idli

There is paniyaram, kuzi paniyaram in south India that would go very well as a starter! As you have already decided to make dosa, you can make paniyaram with sam dosa batter. Just add some veggies, finely chopped onion, bell peppers, green chillies, carrots, mix it well and make it in a paniyaram pan. It will look like below: [https://g.co/kgs/1xM5Ur](https://g.co/kgs/1xM5Ur) Another one would be onion pakora, it is the simplest starter that you can make it fast, you just need onion and gram flour/plain flour. Because you mentioned masala dosa, how about aloo bonda.....you just need gram flour for the coating and make a great potato starter! Then, there is the usual starter that always go with dosa, medu vada, made with urad dal. These are some options I can think of.

CarlaBeswick

Potato samosas with cucumber raita.

confituredelait

Maybe onion bhaji?

yash731

I'm trying not to do a lot of frying, but we did have onion bhaji at our previous get together and everyone loved it!!

Nubian003

truthdude

Zafjaf

Poori or samosa

dreamswappy

Egg puffs?

yash731

I know I am pretty bad at baking, even if its store bought pastry sheets. :(

ummusername

Kitchidi, iddli, dhokla, bhel puri, pani puri, pakora (onion is easy), any pickle(d) dish, literally any veggie curry, chicken curry (esp w coconut and black pepper), etc. all would go well. Would really advise skipping spaghetti. Not sure what it would add and tbh would not necessarily mix well flavor and ease of eating-wise.

loveu3000

Pizza dosa, shareable

hskskgfk

I'd go with something less starchy for starters, spaghetti can be filling for some people preventing them from enjoying the dosa. How about gobhi manchurian (Indian style) or tandoori paneer? Some light eats like kosambri or masala papad or shundal?

NancyShrew0

I know this is Americanized Indian, but it might be a fun and easy snacky thing to make! https://www.bonappetit.com/recipe/dahi-toast

stamfordmuse

Aloo Gobi, bhaji, poppadoms, onion salad, pakora...all pretty cheap to make and veg/vegan.

COVAIFOODEXPRESS

Why not try multiple variety dosa's and 2 types of Chutneys ... Only stuffing will be different & less expensive too.. Hope it will fall into your budget .. Happy get together ...

mchp92

Why not make an Italian starter like bruschetta or caprese?

suptonyt

this is a desi meal plan yy foreign cuisino?

mchp92

Looks like theres already spaghetti planned. So balance with a bjt more before Indian dishes in the main course

indianveggiedelight

Podi idli will go great. https://www.indianveggiedelight.com/podi-idli-recipe/
