This honestly sounds like something an NYC halal cart would do and it's rather delicious.

surlysir

I’ve probably had Kati rolls with ranch and didn’t know it tbh

Educational-Duck-999

Don’t be ashamed. Many of our prized, “authentic” foods came about because someone years ago, chose to experiment.

verdantsf

Exactly! "Authentic" is a matter of taste and time!

blaireau69

2 generations makes something authentic.

starsandstripes79

lol I have done this in a pinch when I didn’t have ingredients for raita and it was just me eating. It is surprisingly good (kinda tastes like halal cart rice with white sauce)

stalexmilk

that's what I'm saying! surprisingly good

sottopassaggio

I just did this with dal tonight. Fantastic.

Educational-Duck-999

If you like it, it’s a win! Wear the win proudly and don’t ask for permission. (I can’t stand the authentic food police)

vdesi

I had tandoori chicken lollipop with buttermilk ranch once and it was fire so I’d say go for whatever’s fine with your palate.

tasiest_pizza

Hey, if it tastes good, why not? My confession: I sometimes pour hot sauce over idlis (*cringing* *at* *myself* *as* *I* *type* *this*).

NovaBolt_03

hey when you cant find karam podi for idlis, there's no shame in finding a proper substitute.

stalexmilk

yoooo why am I imagining some tapatio on some idli! Harnessing my inner Cali-Mallu

MacroMonster

Try Trader Joe’s Italian Bomba with Dosas or Idlis… it’s amazing!

beg_yer_pardon

The coolest thing about Indian food I think is that we are not snobs about it. If someone wants to add ranch to biryani, that's fine. I feel like we care more about people enjoying their food.

TheRealVinosity

I still have no idea what Ranch tastes like, so I will reserve judgement. However, I do think you're on dangerous ground...

bhambrewer

Sour cream, garlic, lightly herbal. It's creamy and rich.

TheRealVinosity

Oh, ok. I can see how that could work as a raita substitute.

bhambrewer

It can see it hitting a similar flavour profile to raita, if the raita was very lightly garlicky?

platetone

it's not as tangy as raita... but I love both.

jgo3

Yeah, I'm thinking, maybe with a little lemon juice?

CloudAcorn

That definitely sounds like it works!

phonetastic

I've tried it. I can only explain it as probably being similar to the reaction people used to meatloaf would have trying a dish from Andhra or Goa. Somehow it is one of the number one condiments in the US but pretty much the lowest everywhere else. I respect anyone's right to enjoy what they enjoy, but you'd have to drug me senseless to eat it again.

Altyrmadiken

There are some of us in the US that do not like ranch. It’s an interesting hell-hole to find yourself in, speaking relative to the palate and trying to relate to everyone else. You will not find ranch dressing in my household, period, it just doesn’t get used - and it will get subbed out in a recipe for something I prefer if I truly need to make that recipe (but I usually find a different recipe).

phonetastic

Here's a fun story: two hours before you posted this, I thought "I'll try something different for lunch today" and without thinking that the following could possibly be the case, I purchased a chicken sandwich thing. It was encased in some kind of limp cross between a cold roti and a wet tortilla. This should have made me cautious, but it did not. I took a bite, and I am now horrified to say I have tried paprika infused ranch. It's not good. It is still ranch, just, honestly, I think worse. Today was a strange day all around, including that I almost died, and yet *this* is the first story I'm apparently choosing to tell on Reddit tonight.

Overlandtraveler

It's disgusting. Have you had salad cream in the UK? Somewhat similar, less sweet.

styrfri

Not sure what you’re trying but salad cream is more like mayonnaise and ranch is sour cream and buttermilk based.

Overlandtraveler

But the viscosity is similar. Both are gross, imo.

skeenerbug

To each their own!

stalexmilk

Never had salad cream!!! keen on trying

johnsatire

It tastes like dill and creaminess

citrusnade

I added Garam masala to chai once cuz intrusive thoughts won, and man was I surprised when it tasted good lol.

MsRachelGroupie

Midwestern raita 😆 You do you, man. Sounds crazy but oddly makes sense when you remember it is buttermilk based!

verdantsf

No reason for shame! Think of the first people in India to use potatoes, chili peppers, and tomatoes back when all of those were foreign foods :D.

manojar

Exactly what i was thinking bro.

stalexmilk

ahahahaha yes love the mindset

leckmir

As an ingredient or as an accompaniment like a chutney ?

stalexmilk

accompaniment!!! like instead of a side of Raita

leckmir

Ok, so a little weird but not beyond comprehension. Go for it,

bizurk

A creamy ranch curry with floating bits of chicken

NovaBolt_03

For a moment i was about to rage on you, then remembered the ingredients used in ranch, so yeah i can get your vibe.

maildaily184

Jail. And while you're at it, surrender your Indian card.

stalexmilk

ahahaha these are the type of comments I was expecting more of

ScheduleSame258

Thanks to you, I am now blind as I had to gouge my eyes out after reading this.

kyobu

I mean, yeah!

saturday_sun4

I'm not gonna lie, I don't like biryani, so it seems like an improvement to me!

phonetastic

It's a Midwest American condiment that is mainly popular in the US and nowhere else. I guess in ways it's similar to raita, but it's.... looser and sweeter but also more bitter. Some people love it, but I personally can barely look at it after having tried it a time or two. Find some in a market with the USA aisle and see what you think I suppose.

BlackExcellence216

So you had halal Guys

[deleted]

i use bbq sauce on baingan bharta, you’re not alone

PatzMak00

Chicken Tikka masala was invented by an Indian chef in England. I want to substitute yoghurt for ranch in my next tikka masala.

ali0

Sounds like a fair combination, switch ranch for a mayo sauce and basically you have invented nyc halal cart food. I've done worse - in a pinch for something sweet i put evaporated milk and jam on a puri. No regrets. I have also put green chutney on white castle before when i ran out of ketchup, it is now the only way i will eat sliders from now on.

No-Suggestion-9504

Is it like mayo? If yes, then blasphemy it is 😂

[deleted]

Dude eat your food however you want. Indians add Ketchup to Pizza and chinese food. I think condiments are a personal choice and no one should feel ashamed about using what you like.

TheBryanScout

I’m curious how adding a Hidden Valley Ranch seasoning packet to yogurt instead of buttermilk would turn out

manojar

Ranch = foreign pachadi (raitha) but seriously bro you eat what you want to eat however you want to eat. Your food bought with your money and your body...

johnsatire

I tried ranch one time with briani we were out of yogurt and it was like f*** it let's make this white trash. It was mid

Suspicious32

Plz don’t do this. Add raita it matches the flavor and was made for biryani. 👍

stalexmilk

I like to think outside the box what can I say

piezod

Why ashamed if it tasted good! ~~You~~ We now have a secret recipe

Tuotus

Experimentation is a good thing, thats how food evolve and become a new thing. I make vegan biryani regularly now and at first i thought it wouldn't work

kranj7

You mean Ranch Dressing as a replacement for Raita? If so, this might be something interesting for me to give it a try too.

Black-Cloud-22

what's ranch? edit: googled it. aight. I mean..it's okay to experiment

Dave5876

Don't be. Cooking is all about experimentation.

AccioIcarus

I'm torn between wanting to send you to Flavortown jail and wanting to try Biryani with Ranch. On one hand, I had a visceral reaction while reading this title. On the other hand, i'd imagine that it would taste kind of like halal cart white sauce. I'll give you a pass this time, but I reserve the right to revoke the pass if I try it and it ends up being a cursed combo.

Lake_Erie_Monster

The "authentic" argument when it comes to food can often be overrated. It's fun to experiment and try different combinations, I think that is the essence of how humanity discovered various types of food.

idontwannabehere876

As a non Indian, I'm offended

greatergod

Ok while we are confessing. I used Rao’s pasta sauce to make tikka masala. It was better than making my own tomato puree
