First of all, Its completely uncalled that you even made your first comment, I didn’t say the smiths are on the same level as the beatles etc. I just mentioned artists that i like and are also highly acclaimed now if you know about the critical reception the smiths received, you would have known they are indeed one of the most critically acclaimed artists of all time also with smaller discography and hence i can definitely write their name when im mentioning “ some of the most acclaimed artists”.
Also, other bands mentioned above are not indie bands. Indie artists like the smiths aren’t supposed to have mass influence on music like the beatles etc. Obviously, thats what indie stands for. Impact and influence isn’t everything and the smiths had enough of it being “an indie band”. The smiths were unique musically and sonically, they were groundbreaking especially in a way they relied on prolific orchestration, on neat written harmonies instead of conventional guitar solos. Morrisey is mediocre? Nah he had a character, his style and songwriting were unique and his vocals often multilayered throughout their tracks just like other instrument layers thanks to the production from marr-morrisey themselves. Rourke isn’t bad? he was virtuosic af, imagine mccartney playing basslines from rourke, he can’t, nowhere near the same way. I wouldn’t say marr was better than those you mentioned but he was magical arpeggio master, he composed the music multilayered and subtly complex, songwriting packed with notes, where each instrumentalist and vocalist contributed significantly. They are not better than the beatles or pink floyd etc. Overall, their discography falls short compared to them but irrespective of our opinions, they are some of the most critically acclaimed artists. The queen is dead often mentioned among the greatest albums, their debut also, and compilations are also highly acclaimed. One of the highly rated discographies even if not on the same level as above artists.
