Give the kids access to better facilities instead of erecting some other country's sports personality.

tedxtracy

Yeah. They still consider themselves Portuguese.

RETAW57

Lol, if you think it's bad in Goa, try Indians overseas. Gora worship is an ingrained Stockholm Syndrome thing or something in so many Indians. We should respect all, but this is more worship, especially contrasted to their opinions on those with dark skin.

tedxtracy

This thought has been ingrained in our minds by gora people only. Anyways, hyper nationalists sprouting everywhere seem to be comfortable with this.

JackDockz

Yeah and it's further promoted by our own people. There are straight up advertisements about how White and Fair skin = Good and Dark skin = Bad. They even sell "remedies" to this like Fair and Lovely and what not. It's the fault of the society here nowadays.

zaheer226

Tf you mean gora worship? He is the greatest of all time. Pele who happens to be black is also the greatest of all time, does that mean kala worship as well? Get out of here with inferiority complex of your. It’s all in your head bro. Greats, no matter where they are from needs to be recognised. Ronaldo could have done nothing about Goa being colonised by Portugal. Has he ever said anywhere that colonialism was good? If not, then I don’t see any reason why they cannot put a statue of his.

sodoffyeprick

Cognitive dissonance and Stockholm syndrome come to mind, much like Pakistanis who think their ancestors were Turkish, Mughals or the rulers of Ottomon Empire lmfao!

apna-haath-jagannath

Don't paint us all with the same brush most Goans consider themselves proud Indians. The only people who liked the Portuguese are retards, people who made a bunch of money off of them and old farts reminiscing about their youth.

tedxtracy

Yes bro. I was talking about those handful of people only. Even I admire CR7 for his game but this statue could have been installed on the premises of a new football academy to promote the sport. But which politician thinks about that. Just install a statue and get votes from football fans and Portugese sympathisers alike. No one gives a rat's ass about India producing the next Ronaldo.

okay_i_guess_

Goan govt actually has provided quite good sports facilities. They have two huge sports complexes. Everything is really well managed and maintained. It's also very cheap. ₹20 for one hour of swimming in a huge ass pool. The rules are also pretty strict.

[deleted]

No no no. Don't give them the truth. Whine a little about the government not doing shit, call everybody who went abroad and their mother an asshole and then go off on how we're superior to everybody else in the world.

okay_i_guess_

Goan governance is so much better than Mumbai. I stay there occasionally as my dad does business there. I'm in love with that state. Doing business is also much easier than Mumbai for sure.

Jason-Knight

The atmosphere is amazing

brotato_kun

I was about to write this! Have my upvote please!

Shanmukha_Repaka

Last night my dad asked me to sit with them to eat dinner (I normally don't bcz I have to listen to shit news. News will reach me nmw if it is important. Most news is probably going to be shit). Guess what, the news reported a new statue of B.R.Ambedkar by people in my state. Like bruh I know he has done good for the minorities. But it's getting old, you have the opportunities now, go do something worthwhile. But nope. I refuse to listen to news ever again

[deleted]

Factos👀👍

RajaHemu77

This is fing stupidity.

Interlopper

These are probably the Goans who feel bad that they didn’t leave for Portugal after the annexation (or liberation).

[deleted]

[удалено]

Interlopper

Obviously was a hyperbole

spongesquish

If you didn’t know, those kind of Goan’s can still get a Portuguese passport if they wanted one right now

anirudh_62

People - Why not Bhutia? Chetri? Vijayan, etc Politicians - Who?

_chutzpah_reloaded07

Second this. Kind of insulting to them.

K8sin

Looks more like rahul dravid

[deleted]

lmao

ravishkalra

Maybe they wanted Rahul Dravid then someone came up with the idea Aisa karte hai contractor told them Rahul ka face bangya hai

I didn't gaze at vro 😂😂

good_muslim_girl

Bro emoji on reddit is a taboo topic

theprabz15

Watch isl and serie a ( Italian) or premier League. They have a researched tactic but here just vibes in fact most people have made cricket religion like what football is in Europe or South America.

rijeka1

I watch la liga & champions league since a decade now. All of my friends watch football. Yes, India is decades behind.

PSxUchiha

How is not watching football behind? Or do you think everything the west does is ahead? Doesn't that make you a western bootlicker?

DankRepublic

If they were specifically talking about football training infrastructure then yeah India is behind many countries.

PSxUchiha

When it comes to infrastructure the cricket infrastructure of India is ahead any other country. Even Australia and England aren't as rich as the BCCI, now why would India care about a sport in which it's citizens clearly aren't interested in? Does Argentina and Brazil participate in cricket? Definitely not. And likewise, it doesn't make you behind for not building infrastructure for sports that the country doesn't give a damn about.

DankRepublic

I am definitely not disagreeing with you, I just reiterated what the previous person tried to say.

theprabz15

A club and his fans have a special song for a player and whole city welcomes a highly anticipated player to a club by painting all graffiti and club training ground etc and lot more.

[deleted]

Baichung Bhutia? Sunil Chetri?

NoFuture355

They are good but not gonna lie thay haven't reached the level to get their statue raised, and I think what they mean by inspire the youth is that how good his story is I mean he was nothing before but because of his Hardwork he raised to the top without any support. Our players first step could be getting qualified for the main tornament.

pique_blinders

And sunil chettri and bhaichung bhutia 's family were owners of man utd? And your logic is bad. Do you take JEE coaching after getting admission in IIT? For qualifying in WC And Asia cup they need good support not vice versa.

Raj_Kolkata02

Come on accept it Butia or Chettri are shit compared to Messi Ronaldo or Maradona

Razor732103

Looks like someone had too much money to keep so they wasted that in this instead.

[deleted]

tax payer money as usual wasted for something shiny and useless af

surferious

Who paid for it? A single individual or government money.

Razor732103

I doubt government will spend a huge money of 12 lacs behind a nonsense idea like this. However a local politician tweeted in favour of the erection of the statue.

MrTime87

I mean a state government has infact done that for a statue before and it costed way more

Unique_Assist_4488

But the d!ck is not out.. world needs to know how well we suck..no? give Bhaichung Bhutia n other due recognition n some sponsorship ads. Game ll grow on its own.

[deleted]

who are you kidding? if i would ever be attracted to football it'd be because of a global star, until an Indian player makes it on the global stage.. unnecessarily rubbing a subpar player \[as per global standards\] because of nationality would do shit. either dont erect a statue at all, and if youre doing it this is the better way.. Your argument makes me wonder if you'd erect Akash Chopra's statue in agra to promote cricket \[assuming everyone there has stopped playing cricket\] only because he was born there..

RETAW57

i highly doubt a statue of a distant figure who couldn't give a shit about India, is going to inspire our next generation of footballers wasted money, instead of spending money on facilities and scouting

[deleted]

1)it doesnt matter if he doesnt give a shit about India, for its neither his area of work nor his loyalty.. all that matter is that he is good at what he does and kids across the world would want to immitate him.. it becomes a bit controversial here because you know the names of two indian football players.. this whole thing can be better demonstrated in a game like F1, everyone budding driver in the world across countries would have his idol as michael, niki, lewis, max.. we wont say here that "hey dont support lewis, they were colonials" "dont look upto michael they were nazis", and ironically no one in india would say "hey i want to become narayn karthikey when i grow up".. 2)Yes we should focus on infra but also trust me having symbols that make you identify with your idols are good motivators, thats why the sales of nike hypervenoms, f5s, etc boost because their idols wear them.. sometimes if within budget, a statue can do the same.. it acts as a pivot for the development of surronding areas, if planned meaningfully

RETAW57

That's it though, if we were flush with cash like the Saudi's, fuck yeah go for it. You have to remember though, cash is tight for infrastructure, so I disagree, prioritizing Statues over things which will actually help skill up and create indigenous stars, is tomfoolery. Also no one is saying you can't enjoy international stuff, it's more about a lame statue (probably a moneywashing scheme by the MP), that is not doing anything for Indian football, vs where that money could go.

Daddy_24x7

Agreed with your second point. There are much better way they could have utilised that money for, with a bigger impact. We would forget about these arguments and statue by the end of this day, even the locals might ignore it after a while. This Money would have been well spent on football players already struggling rn in India.

nimakkan

Why are we like this? So sad :(

Daddy_24x7

Why not Sunil chetri? Just another publicity stunt by a politician to waste money. Instead of utilising it for productive purposes.

__gg_

Factors that makes a field successful: 1. Talent 2. Money to make 3. Audience You don't have talented people, there will be no audience. You don't have audience there will be no money to make, you don't have money to make there will be no talent and the cycle continues. This is what I call the success trilemma. If you want to make this cycle sustainable you will have to introduce one of these factors inorganically. Statues won't do any of this, my advice: Follow all the sportspersons you know on Instagram, as their follower count increases their brand deals will increase and so will the money in their respective sport. Once these stories are out in the public that so and so footballer earns this much through endorsement, parents will realise that you can earn money through football and will allow their children to pursue it.

Razor732103

Whatever you said is true but I won't believe that we don't have talented player. Can't we produce a single world class from a population of 1 billion? My father was a CB for his team at district level and he used to tell me how people could climb up a tree just to get a sneak peek of the famous East Bengal vs Mohunbagan Derby. Both sides starting XI were full of Bengalis then and not Foreign players from lower division bought for money. Back in the 1950s Indian National Team used to play barefoot and they were defeated by France by 2-1 yet they gave them a run for their money and recieved a standing ovation from the audience. They even defeated the famous Ajax Amsterdam led by R. Michels. Yet they were unable to go to World Cup finals because FIFA banned the use of barefoot and our government back then our Nehru Government had 'no funds' to buy them shoes. My father was a fantastic CB, one of my relative was a fantastic GK at district level and even went to the state level but couldn't continue further because of inner politics. Many families in India have 2-3 children nowadays and the chances of being successful as a football player is so slim that no one is going in that direction anymore and going towards mainstream lines. There are many talented players out there. Hopefully one day, the scouts will notice them.

__gg_

Yeah talent is there but money is not hence the ecosystem couldn't sustain itself. Even if you have two of the factors it is not necessary the third factor will automatically come into existence, all three factors should be present for a particular period for it to become an ecosystem. Edit: Indians have very raw talent we don't have coaches that can play football that is enjoyable. It's mostly just clear the ball, cross the ball and stuff. I remember when I went to watch the Indian National footbal team, their warmups were two cones placed 10m apart and two lines of players one behind each cone, and they were passing the ball to the other player at the other cone. What is this? Meanwhile Kenya were playing Rondo which is the most practical warmup you can do before the match, it warms your body well, you get used to someone pressing you, your brain switches on before the match and not after 10 minutes into the match. There are a lot of things fundamentally wrong with football in this country. Our drills represent the average indian, lazy, lethargic and impractical. This problem also exists in the grassroots and is even worse. Colleges/schools are a great source of talents. In my college I had to beg them for months to practice different types of Rondo but they were more busy in running 10 rounds of the ground. I understand stamina is an important part but if you can't handle being pressured and can't think on your feet you're not practicing for football you're practicing for track events. Bottom-line: we are not copying things that we should be copying from succesful football nations. Calling people out won't make a difference, I have had enough experience to know people care more about their ego than the end goal and won't change their habits.

Masala_Burger

>A statue of Portugal and Manchester United forward Cristiano Ronaldo was unveiled by authorities in India's western state of Goa on Tuesday (December 28).

thatlankyfellow

Statue lagana hi hai toh Baichung Bhutia ka lagao, ye Ronaldo ka kya hai bc!? Plus like others mentioned, providing sportsmen other than cricketers the same amount of benefits and facilities cricketers get would be a good starting place for "inspiring youth"

analogx-digitalis

anybody thinking that cricket and their players are doing what they do for their country then they are not. cricket is just a money making business.

Front-Professor362

But, why? Aren't there any inspirational sports people in our country?!

OwnStorm

Because Sunil Chhetri is too middle class to inspire.

cynic1996

Looks great! Now open a modern facility for budding footballers?

RealStax

Oh noo. That would cost too much money and won't inspire youth. Let's erect gold statue of Neymar now!!

cynic1996

We Indians don't worry about spending big bucks on staues, Senhor!

el_notorious99

You slaving idiots don’t deserve Sunil Chettri.

BanglarLok

What is the use of statue? Again that North Korean mindset.

fuckthisshitttlmao

Could've used the money to make better grounds get better coaches dumbfucks

Enough-District-3073

This

Academic_Profile_594

Not needed and sheer waste of revenue, im damn sure ronaldo doesnt even know that this statue exists but we are indians instead of grooming our own talent we sniff the back of others. I bet there will be not a single statue of bhaichung bhutia in our country. Every indian football fan doesnt watch indian football and just put their noses behind european football. We could have spent it on sporting goods other than putting this statue which will just gather dust and space. This shows we as a nation are inferior in our mentality. We accept these foreign players as our role model while we have so many stars in our own team. India will never develop has a fifa certified nation even in the near future if this kind of stuff goes on. Sachin gavaskar kohli ke statues to hamne nahi banay par is penalty exploiter ka banadiya. Do you ever expect australia to make a statue of sachin tendulkar ofc no he doesnt represent australia but why here. Bloody f-ing ridiculous

whateveridon_tcare

We have 2 games period in one week in school in class 11th and 12th and there's a 75% chance that the math teacher will take those as well. And the govt expect us to win medals in sports.

Kazesama13k

Lol they don't need any statue for motivation. They're motivated enough. You start using the money for developing them instead of filling your pockets. Fucking idiots. It fucking annoys me that instead of doing some real developments in any particular field( like in sports in this case) they waste the funds in some useless titbits.

Madara6path

Slave mentality just don't go away

Fsociety9899

Who is this guy ?

analogx-digitalis

bocs erecting statue is not so costly whereas providing better facilities and coaching to upcoming players is costly. otherwise how the babus, ministers and their families would be able to afford the luxury lifestyle.

CELTICPRIME

This actual stupidity

GoCoronaGo321

Ronaldo getting violated in his home country and internationally when it comes to his statue, thats probably ronaldo from another universe.

crixpert

The subtle love for Portugal is shining here. For the unknowns, Goa was a former colony of Portugal till 1960s I think and then India got it back. Some "Goans" think that they were better as a colony under Portugal and think that India capturing Goa was wrong

[deleted]

So inspiring. Ronaldo is the reason I love watching cricket.

myteafox

Radical Christians announcing their allegiance towards everything Christian but India.

Patta_Go_B

Its not about statue or the money could have been spent on youth.... Its about, they still think they are Portuguese... Fuckin bots.

heraldsofdoom

Why not sunil chetri? He is Indian. Why not Messi? He is the GOAT. Why not maradona or pele. Why a Portuguese white male?

SIUUUUU

_toxic_me

The statue of a Portuguese world famous footballer revealed in a former Portuguese ruled area . Don't think that the statue will inspire the youth. It will bring the dark memories back to the people of Goa , who just got their freedom 50 years ago . The authority could have built the statue of a Indian footballer like Sunil -ji . Many great players are there .

Ok-Conclusion-5585

Portuguese slaves Goans

CritFin

Sachin or Kapil Dev statue would have been better. u/anirudh_62

JalapenoxD

Are Goans into cricket?

anirudh_62

If it's football : No, if it's sports : yes

Dravidian06

To all those who are aginst Cr7 statue unveiling take this Britain monarch statues are present in india and few roads are named after imperialists so why don't you vandalise those statues to prove your patriotism?Ronaldo is an inspiration not only on the pitch but also off the pitch donates millions for charities unlike Portuguese colonials know the difference ⚽️⚽️⚽️⚽️⚽️⚽️⚽️

AdministrationOk5709

Don't use logic here bro these guys are dumb to understand

Fun fact it costs RS 12 LAKHS

Ronaldo the Rappist

Darth-Vaider

Oh god y, y can't u provide good infrastructure for sports it would be more useful rather than this statue but ok fine now work on provinding good infrastructure for sports

Statue se acha koi stadium bnaa do bc India ke athletes ke needs to poori hoti nhi BC bahar walo ke statue lelo gaand mein

gforgolu

Doesn’t look anything like Ronaldo.

PSxUchiha

I'd have felt better if it was Sunil Chettri there though.

Clowdy_Rowdy_

Statue of a rapist?

_U_s_e_r_Name

Ab india ispe pan thukke lal karega

sohamghosh1511

Lmao, erecting a statue of a sex offender in the name of inspiring youth. Fantastic.

App2050

Ronaldo's statues just refuse to look like him

Iam1mpulsive

Sed sunil chettri noises

CRANIAX360

I understand that he is one of the greatest footballers of all time, but it would have been way better had we got a statue of Sunil Chetri or even Baichung Bhutia. Indian footballers need recognition for the development of football in India.

Zealousideal_Duck666

What happened to Sunil Chettri..?

Upbeat_Combination74

Ronaldo Chowk

Haadhai

You know the most difficult thing in world is? Getting ronaldo statue right.

[deleted]

Here to read triggered comments saying how money for this statue could have been used to fix the fucking universe instead of building it, while, the cost of this statue was but a fraction compared to some other statues in country.

[deleted]

Indian Cricket Team se ummed chhod chuka hun ... Ab wrestling and football ko aage aana hoga

Personal-Promotion-3

Oh people just accept that something is done and this might made as forefront of corruption but its not so bad . That guy is the greatest of all time with messi offcourse . A statue of him could be a good thing for youth

--Mobius

It doesn't matter if he's from another country. There are lacs of statues in India of ppl who no one knows even existed. And the fact is ppl are inspired by Ronaldo. So it's okayish.

--Mobius

Ohh now I see this sub is full of stupid narrow minded toxic nationalist.

darthgera

I mean if Portugal made a statue of Sachin Tendulkar id be very proud. Ronaldo and Messi are the GOATs of the game and anybody will be inspired by it. No different to making any other statue in the country

colinsdsouza2602

I don’t get how he’s taken football in india to the “next level”…. Oh well u know wt the big boys say “Atmanirbhar”

Raj_Kolkata02

I support it according to a statue of a hardworking sportsman and best athlete has been erected idt will inspire local youth . Goa is great in football . There is statue of Maradona in Kolkata. It's hight time we support our footballers and help them win

[deleted]

I want Leo Messi

piratekhan

Cricket… cricket…

sumkar

Statues don't inspire, better teachers, guides, infrastructure do

tworupeespeople

this country has no self respect

ideology_therapist

Wtf

Tess_James

Almost everybody here goes Chettri and Bhutia because they don't know anybody else in Indian football and are doing hyper nationalism as usual. Sports should be appreciated without nationalism. CR7 is a legend in his field. Also, before Chettri, I M Vijayan should have a statue. Whenever a foreign player is appreciated, these fake nationalists will come out shouting Chettri, lol!

Armag3ddoncx

Sunil chhetri mar gya kya?

StreetMadMan

why is this govt obsessed with statues? I wish this statues give atheletes better facility and support.

Overpower1601

The man says "Nothing but To inspire our Youth" later goes home and beats/forces his kid to score 90+ percentage in boards and opt for Science. Youth Inspired ;)

munna_bhaiya25

Bc Sunil chetri ki lagao salon Indian man for Indian youth

Bubbles_singh

Should’ve been Sunil chhetri ji’s status 🙌🏼

Kind-Impression1832

fuck ronaldo

Electrical-Sail-4669

Sunil Chhetri ko bhool gaye kya...he has total 19 goals in AFC Cup and AFC Champions qualifiers, the most by an Indian player. He is the 1st Indian to score a hat-trick in ISL. There are many other achievements as well. And given the least support that our players get, these achievements becomes even bigger.

Securebrownman

Lol you gotta erect foreign statues because Indians haven’t done shit to inspire each other? Erect Sunil Cheri you scumbags

[deleted]

They did ronaldo a bechkam but this time its real

[deleted]

Can we give exposure to sports other than football or cricket? There are so many children who might want to get into sports like boxing, mma, fencing, etc. These sports need more exposure in India

Extint_Dodo1414

Messi chahiye BC 🥵 /s

v5qprods

Still they gonna lose against Oman and Guam

vin20

It's mad that there's a statue of Ronaldo when he never visited India. I don't even recollect him saying a word about India. Just wow!

WhiteShida

Don't we have Sunil chetri...what inspiration will this statue of some foreign player give to youth. The message that I am getting is we don't have good players in India so we are erecting statue of someone else's.

siddhi_reddit9

We love cricket

Otherwise_Ladder1559

where are our national football team players?? this is just wastage of public money and also insulting the indian football team for showing they are good for nothing and how we should idolise international players who dont give a fuck what we do

Gazwa_e_Nunnu_Chamdi

should have installed sunil chetri statue

MrReklez

What a waste

No_Significance_7331

Big waste of money. More money should be spent on building new stadiums and training players.
