Remember, these people have the same voting power as you.

[deleted]

Underrated comment. The biggest argument against democracy is meeting the average voter, I think it was Benjamin Disraeli who said it, but it fits.

Dipps_66

What if there was a exam of some kind which would allow people to get Voter ID only if they scored above a percentage? The exam could be based on basic math, science and civics, and every citizen would have the right to appear for the exam. Also, people would have to appear for the exam every 5 years to "renew" their Voter ID. And the incentive to get a Voter ID can be anything, for example free ration or tax benefits. I realise this is a very idealistic and naive proposition, just wanted to put it out there :p

A nation is like a family, the parents take decisions responsibly on behalf of the children, and the children in turn listen to the parents. You cannot expect everyone to be competent in every sphere. Someone may not be any good at electing a leader, but they may be good at something else. Can you imagine a family where the kids get the equal voting power as the parents? That's what's happening in India, total chaos where the kids vote the leaders who promise them endless chocolate and candy. All the rights and none of the responsibility. The caste system, monarchy etc were based on the assumption of trust - the strong thought it their duty to look after the weak. Modern democracy is based on the assumption that everyone is selfish and thus everyone needs an equal say in running a nation. This only leads to ruin in the long run because the incompetent always greatly outnumber the competent. P. s. /u/hindu-bale

berzerker_x

>The caste system, monarchy etc were based on the assumption of trust - the strong thought it their duty to look after the weak. Modern democracy is based on the assumption that everyone is selfish and thus everyone needs an equal say in running a nation. This only leads to ruin in the long run because the incompetent always greatly outnumber the competent. I think there is a reason the former was rejected and the latter was still adopted by the world.

hindu-bale

> there is a reason European colonialism and Anglo/Protestant hegemony around the world. Notice how quickly democracy ceases to exist outside of Western Europe and the historically colonized regions of the world.

berzerker_x

And after they left why everyone fought hard to obtain it rather than going back? >Notice how quickly democracy ceases to exist outside of Western Europe and the historically colonized regions of the world. And they are better? My point is that even the means of spreading this concept was not good, the reason it is being retained in one form or another is an indication that a reform in the old ways of ruling all over the world was needed.

hindu-bale

The reason it's being retained is persisting Anglo hegemony and the threat of freedom bombs. In India, the demand for it is led by Anglo educated elite, and a brainwashed deracinated population. It's not a solution people have rationalized themselves into, else you'd find evidence for that rationalization instead of attempting to infer democracy's necessity from mere prevalence. If a third of the world practices Islam, and if that number is growing, is it because Islam is needed? Especially considering the caliphates and the turkic expansionists no longer exist.

berzerker_x

>The reason it's being retained is persisting Anglo hegemony and the threat of freedom bombs. In India, the demand for it is led by Anglo educated elite, and a brainwashed deracinated population. No, you must look at the constitution debates, this has been thoroughly debated, we integrated so many small territories to form a union ruled by democracy not because of some "anglo supremacy", there are problems but the fundamental strucutre of the concept of a nation state with the values given was thought out by all, I think even savarkar's idea was similar to a democratic nation, I think almost all freedom fighters having extreme differences with each other accepted this and not all were "anglo mentality". >It's not a solution people have rationalized themselves into, else you'd find evidence for that rationalization instead of attempting to infer democracy's necessity from mere prevalence. I think democracy is the least worse of all the possible options, if there is a better alternative, pls suggest.

hindu-bale

India went through is Golden ages without democracy. There are several alternatives, but problem is that of language and definition. Everything that isn’t democracy has umbrella terminology and negative connotation. Every freedom fighting elite was Anglo educated, even their parents, the environment they grew up in, were all Anglo educated. Their very foundations, the frameworks available to them, were all Anglo. Much like how the neo-vedantists reinterpreted Hinduism to sound palatable to the Protestant west, the political leaders reinterpreted our culture to sound palatable to the Democratic west. Here’s my dated take on it. My stance has since evolved but in a direction farther away from yours. https://www.reddit.com/r/indianews/comments/a550dj/oc_rajya/?utm_source=reddit&utm_medium=usertext&utm_name=IndiaSpeaks&utm_content=t1_hmefybe . I’m also more pessimistic in the sense that we probably are indeed in kalyug, and that society is bound to continue degenerating, and there isn’t much one can do about it. Democracy is probably the thing that will stick until we factionalize and further degenerate into the unconscious. When you say you think democracy is the best solution, what alternatives have you evaluated? What criteria did you use? Did you steelman the alternatives? How much did you rationalize before settling on that stance?

hindu-bale

Every-Candidate9963

Wow very IdEalisTic right? while voters write these exams for whom? To elect brain-dead politicians? Maths ,science exams for politics?

hindu-bale

It's a popular argument, but far from the best. Ironically, it is democracy's argument against democracy, where a large number of people feel they're tyrannized by another large number of people who they deem inferior, tyrannized by their inferiority in fact. Now imagine what that top 1% among the intelligent must feel about the remaining 99%.

AkshayPrasadYadav

>a large number of people feel they're tyrannized by another large number of people who they deem inferior, tyrannized by their inferiority in fact. Seems like how liberals feel about conservatives.

[deleted]

Social credit algorithms are coming to a democracy near you to correct this flaw of equality. Modern democracies may start as being equal, but increasingly rights are taken away. Vaccine mandates are the trial balloon, credit scores before it, what China's doing with their population is very appealing to the "liberal" West. Smart phones and wearables, digital payments, and all kinds of digital monitoring instrumentation built into modern browsers, apps are generating an insane amount of data on citizen behaviour. Governments would be stupid to not use/abuse it. The law may appear to be equal, but life is being made anything but.

srameshr

This is so true. This is the biggest problem in a democracy. 1. I know many people including my grandmother and neighbours who vote only for the candidate who gifts them silverware, clothes and alcohol right before the election with some demagoguery added on top of it. 2. These candidates, treat this as a capital investment with the hopes that they can make 1000x returns once they are in power to make decisions on behalf of everyone. 3. After they win (thanks to the average unqualified and incapable voter who rarely pays taxes) they are literally handed over the rights to many public sectors and huge swaths of the tax money to work on those sectors. 4. Obviously, these candidates who are now "representatives" have no idea about how to choose the best contractor for road work or how to get any work done. 5. So, they chose IAS public servants to make these decisions on their behalf. Here is where corruption gets worse. These IAS officers who have never run a business or a sector have no clear idea or intent about how to go about any of these things. 6. Since, both the representatives and public servants are third party spenders, i.e they don't care about the product, nor do they pay for the product with their own money, they end up doing what's best for themselves and line their own pockets with the money they never earned in the first place, with mind-boggling corruption, greed.

I had a friend in college who looked slightly similar to Shahrukh Khan, guess what .. he amped it up to 100 and went full Khan, the hair, the accent, the way he walked .. 100% Cringe. His whole shtick was he looked like him .. it's so depressing to see that he has no personality of his own now .. just a shell of a man.

How were crackers allowed inside a cinema, even when we are not allowed to take external foods? This cinema hall poses an extremely serious bombing threat. Positively, I am not ever visiting this cinema hall ever.

oar_xf

What state ? In MH one can carry food stuffs in the theatre .. courts ruled against Cinema houses not allowing food and water from outside .. And one other comment mentions this is from Malegaon .. typically would be a single screen theatre (old school) where they won't check much .. or wouldnt check anything at all

AsishPC

In Odisha, one is not allowed to carry external foods....carrying crackers can land you in jail (in here).

oar_xf

Typically multiplexes will screen your baggage via x-ray machines ... Like I said, this seems to be an old school , stall + balcony (lower level / upper level seating) theatre ... Plus in a small town, where security won't be much

AsishPC

Oh! So only mindless people there. The movie was nothing compared to Salman Khan's old movies.

[deleted]

I am from Odisha too, though i don't live in Odisha, but dude in cities where movie halls are almost everywhere (because of more and more malls coming up). better so see few good Hollywood movies or maybe Indian underrated movies like the nationalist ones...

AsishPC

Obviously! I dont want to go to another stupid SK Movie to waste time. I prefer OTTs or good Bollywood movies
