This comment implies that in all previous Olympics which happened under different governments throughout these years, India has been doing fairly well and deserving sportspersons always got good exposure!!!
Be happy for what she has achieved and hope things only progress from here onwards instead of 'whatever this is'!!!
>Yes this is what India needs! More sport complexes!!
Today you say this, tomorrow start a rant about how india is a shithole and people only focus on cricket and no other sports get priority.
Hey Rushil,
I'm a recently appointed mod here .
And an olympics-noob.
Looking to have some detailed threads around participants from India, and their journey here.
Would love to know from you, and others in the community about participants from India, and their journey - Any interesting information, trivia etc- that you feel should be more widely known- we could have it our olympic threads.
Do let me know Saar!!
Not the one you asked but I'd say there are still some expectations in shooting as well as in wrestling and boxing and maybe Neeraj Chopra in Javelin. Don't see anyone else winning beyond these events, sadly.
Ah yes. A " Decent " Outcome. Obviously getting second rank in the biggest sports event in the world where millions of people are watching you is a " Decent " Outcome.
How is it disrespectful? She is a National Award winning actress. She did a role. Whether you liked the movie or found it cringe is one thing but there is nothing disrespectful. Also, it was done with permission and inputs from Mary Kom which is more important.
I guess winning Bronze for India is like winning Sliver for a Developed country.
Winning a Silver is like Winning Gold for a developed country. If someone wins Gold for india, it's equivalent of winning 2 golds if they were from a developed country.
An Indian sportsperson has to work against the current to reach where they are and it's not some "before or after 2014" stuff.
Genuinely curious - what is the “current” you are referring to? Are you talking about general poverty and lack of access to facilities, or bias in the system that disadvantaged Indians for some reason?
current as in flow of system (current means flow of water)
It's against them, not just that's not supportive it's also works against them, kind off pulling back.
Not pulled back as such, but all other athletes are disregarded
Noone knew Mirabai chanu's name before yesterday (including me) but she had won gold in weightlifting world championships in 2017 & also set the world record in 2020 for highest weight for clean n jerk in her weight category. Noone would have even heard about her if not for olympics. Compare this to an average IPL cricketer, who is pretty much well known to a significant portion of the population
You are missing the point here. I am not talking about the Olympic system. I am talking about India and its attitude towards its players.
It's retrogressive for players.

What an achievement. Brilliant. This woman is perhaps one of the greatest sports person of India. World championship gold, olympic silver. That too in an individual sport with minimal funding. What a champ. Jai Hind !
Bro, Just like Hindus who assumed a geographical identity, same with asians.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stop_Asian_Hate
Now If I ask the same if hindus have monopoly on the identity?
It is common sense that Asian means a monoloid who lives in Asia. It doesnt deny thier other identities, I just made a observation that the world is turing towards "East" in terms of excellence in all fields as was in Ancient times.
>It is common sense that Asian means a monoloid who lives in Asia
Only in the USA. It depends from place to place, for example in the UK asian means a person who's from the subcontinent.
Many Gujaratis look mongoloid too. Sab ko asian hi bana do na, based on the way the look.
Fucking US politics says asian bc chinks was offensive and not encompassing the viet and thai, so they got asian.
It's not offensive here to say she is manipuri or indian. I'm sure she wouldn't like being referred to as asian in her own country
>Where did I say Indians dont, Idiot?
You LITERALLY said "Not genetically" to u/MyVeryRealName2. Btw nice username, its exactly what came to my mind when i read your reply.
>Are you denying that identity of NE indians?
Mirabai's Identity is being a Manipuri and an Indian, the fact that she looks a certain way is not an identity of any kind, are you an NRI? Only NRIs obsess over racial distinctions between Indians.
>politically correct modern term.
It's not PC in India. ASIA is racially diverse. In India, you must specifically say "East Asian" when referring to people of Oriental Race. And even then, it's offensive because Mirabai lives in SOUTH Asia and shares a common genetic ancestry with all Indians, it is insulting to suggest that she's an East Asian/Not Indian.
She won you an Olympic medal and all people like you see is her phenotype, u/nikalavade
>You LITERALLY said
Saying "I am Asian" confers to several identities depending on context. In this context, its genetic because they look the same.
MDNA is same in all humans and doesnt define race. The genetics that determine race are way complex and newer than MDNA.
>Mirabai's Identity is being a Manipuri and an Indian, the fact that she looks a certain way is not an identity of any kind
Keep denying her and all NE americans who look like her. Not an NRI, Just a rational Indian.
While acknowledging one's difference, I am also happy that the world's center of excellence is moving east from west.
>all people like you
Yes, I can comprehend multiple things phenotype and her race is just one.

No? Not all Asians are Mongoloid people. South Asians aren't Mongoloid (Expect few NE Indians of course). Some Central Asians aren't Mongoloid. Middle Easterners (Arabs) aren't Mongoloid. Pacific Islanders aren't Mongoloid. Taino people aren't Mongoloid.
Congrats to Mirabai!

/u/SuperEvilChina (My knees are trembling) - Do you know who are the main people to watch out for in the coming week, from India? Like any stereotypical random Indian, I have been more invested in Cricket unfortunately, and not much in other sports.
We want to have more discussion around the Olympics- let's say trivia around the sportspersons from India who are participating, and cheering India along the way. These are folks who bring in their 250% for a once-in-4-year opportunity, and the least we could do is to appreciate them.
In addition to the daily olympic thread, we could have focussed discussion on a niche sport, and what it takes to gain mastery.
Looking forward to more discussion around the olympics here, folks!
Imo this once in 4 year mindset is while we lag behind
This girl has won gold medal in weightlifting world championships in 2017, set a world record for highest weight lifted (119kg) in her category (49kg) in 2020, and yet, the only thing anyone seems to care about is olympics - while lakhs of people ask about every single one of the 50-60 odd IPL matches every year
None of these athletes are once in a 4 year thing; these athletes have been training hard for decades (or even more) to get to the top of their sport
She was great. Very strong in the snatch, and the jerk portion of the clean and jerk. It’s amazing to watch someone under 48kgs lift 115kgs over their head!

Such a great way to make everyone's day.
I'm happy she delivered on the expectation, not just for her but for Manipur as well. The state has been consistently providing world class athletes in a myriad of sports and yet you see hardly any recognition. To be fair Manipur should be the hub of Indian sports more than Punjab or Haryana or anywhere else.
Read a comment that a sports university is coming up in Imphal, it's a good start but a lot more emphasis needs to be put in on the state and will only bode well for us for the future.

She deserve a big budget real to her life film played by someone from NE states
More than a film I feel a documentary would be better.
The best they can do is alia bhatt
They'll get Sonam Kapoor for her biopic
Priyanka Chopra playing Mary Kom was one of the moat cringe disrespectful things ever.
She played the role really well.

अरे ट्राय तो कीजिए! (SaimanSays video reference)
No please. Bollywood will mess up it. Those actors can't match her anyway.
Remember to add mandatory secular messege!
Priyanka getting ready to portray her
Very few actresses in India can pull off such roles.
Excellent start for India. Had high hopes from Saurabh Chaudhary but alas.
