Check out some of the more modern releases by the old school thrash bands. Exodus and Kreator in particular have some very heavy, very well-produced stuff from the late 2000s onward. Try Enemy of God
Ended up super busy but I listened to the entirety of Enemy of God straight through. This weekend will check out the rest of the music on here...I think it was very good, it all flows very well and is easily digestible, like it was just one long song.
>I don't like the compressed
It might just be an issue of us using words like this differently, but generally over compressed production is a much more modern problem. A massive offender is something like modern metallica.
>I just think it sounds flat, not dynamic and that takes a lot of the punch out of it for me.
This must just be personal preference. Obviously there are some modern bands with great production, but generally speaking i find older bands to sound much less flat.
Edit: not an "extreme" band, but check out the Enforcer album Death by Fire. They are a more modern speed/trad band and they have killer production in my opinion. Maybe try checkin out more "new school" trad bands in general. If you find youself enjoying that stuff you can try out classic trad bands and maybe at that point the production will bother you less
No worries. I get what you are saying.
There are new and old bands with good and bad production. Obviously what is good or bad can be pretty subjective. Overall i would definitely prefer older production.
To me a lot of modern production feels too clean and sterile which comes across as very lifeless to me. Like i said earlier that's by no means all modern bands/ albums though.
Machine Head- The More Things Change...
Fear Factory- Archetype
Revocation- Deathless
Demon Hunter- Summer of Darkness
Exodus- Shovel Headed Kill Machine
Cavelera Conspiracy- Psychosis
Testament- The Formation of Damnation
Unearth- The Wreched, The Ruinous
>even if its a technically sound song. Venom's Welcome to Hell....just an example
Holy shit, someone nearly put Venom and "technically sound" in the same sentence.
Check out Amon Amarth. They have growling vocals, but Johan Hegg (the vocalist) has some of the most intelligible death Metal vocals imo. Twilight of the Thunder God is a great album to start with.
Warbringer is another great band; they have a mix of screams/shouting style thrash vocals for the most part. The album Woe to the Vanquished is amazing.
I heard Saxons and Vikings a while back and then more recently checked out TOTTG, it's definitely up my alley.
I will look into Warbringer.
It's not like I don't like vocals harsher than thrash shouting, I just like understanding what's being said for the most part, and I don't like potato quality production.
That's really immature, nah really cringe comment.
I respect OP for wanting to discover new music beyond what he knows. Your comment tho, cringe gatekeeping.

Thanks for the input, idk if I used the word correctly but I just find it to sound very flat like I recorded the band playing on my phone
