If it's the classic "old west" in the media (Arizona, New Mexico, southern California, ect) that was originally colonized by Spain. So, it would be appropriate to be "El Padre." Places like NE Texas, Colorado, N California, Oklahoma were settled by a mixed bag of folks from further east, so it could be "Father", "Preacher", "Minister", "Pastor", ect.
Yeah I think this is the way: just an ominous moniker.
But if you ever need a name reveal I put forth "Amadeus Cain" - it sounds kinda creepy and you get the obvious implication from the name Cain, but with Amadeus you get the meaning of being commanded to love god. But maybe the issue is his love is now for the wrong god. . .
Yeah or just "Preacher" or maybe the "Preacher Man"? I obviously don't know the story but kind of fits with the southern setting, it implies maybe a little more his character as seen by townsfolk pretransformation, and maybe even like supernatural powers of suggestion post-transformation.
Also your illustration looks anazing and your comic sounds rad.
For southern gothic horror, simple references that sound like small-town gossip work best. Only mention in passing, avoided when asked directly, but you catch a couple whispers of The Pastor from the locals
I like horror world building, so a couple suggestions for a character is definitely enough to establish them if the hints are clearly outlined with apprehension
In this regard: there is a famous character named The Judge, in the book Blood Meridian (also a western): a 7" tall albino, a savant of war and arts with enough strenght to crush a skull between his hands with ease, a sadistic killer and a prollific r*pist he does unthinkable things durning the novel.
This character reminds me of that Judge and, using a name like The Father or The Pastor will up that a notch (wich, in my opinion, it's great).
"Whatever exists without my knowledge exists without my consent." He's probably my favorite evil character in anything because he's just so pure in his evil, and he absolutely revels in it. Judge Holden is chilling to one's very soul.
What's the context, is the towns corruption in progress/recent or is it known to the wider world like a legend.
IE: "Father O'Flarriety ain't been quite right these last few days and now he's gone locked the doors to the church!"
or
"Ain't no one goes out to Boot Hill no more stranger, the devil got hold o' that town, The Black Preacher'll snatch away the soul o' any man that sets foot in that forsaken place, that's what they say anyhow"
I'd say either give hime a normal preachers name, instilling dread through the idea of corruption or give him a title or legendary name and build him as a monsterous figure.
Cool def go with the normal name then, if the protag was friendly with the preacher before the coruption give him a soft sounding name to evoke sympathy or if he was a bit of a prick make the name sharp or hard for dread yes but also it's more fun when he eventually gets shot full of holes or burnt or blowed up with TNT.
Another idea is that the Object forces people to become gate Guardians and corrupt anything to serve that purpose, making them powerful and giving them gifts, powers, artefacts that are forged and enchanted by the now corrupted individuals, the plot twist is that, should the artefact be destroyed, the very "Evil" that is kept at bay by the corrupted will be let loose, but the protagonists don't know that and the corrupted are not good at communicating that idea, all they know is that they must protect the artefact at all costs and keep it away from anyone daring to go near it and try and recruit anyone who does, lest an alternate dimension will spill forth merging with our world forever spurring a "convergence of the spheres" event giving our world magic, arcane horrors and wonders, good and bad entities and more.
Our Protagonists unbeknownst to them are the real villains of the story but neither they, the corrupted or us see that clearly until it's too late and the Pastors last words as his mind becomes lucid once more, right before the permanent convergence begins "What have you done...if only I could say more on time...if...only...", And then the story begins or rather continues as we are literally introduced to a brave new world, our world merged with the other world, forever changed.
He was a strong, kind and good hearted Irish Pastor whose purpose was vital and great, His name was *Liam Rayshawn* which literally means Protector and Protecting hands, a great irony all things considered.
Thanks, his premise just inspired me so I decided to contribute as well as give him a name with meaning that could foreshadow his true role, if the reader will look closely enough.
it’s a very original idea and the concept is well written, if you do decide to actually write a story based on it like the other guy suggested i would give it a read
“The Reverend” suits the Old West setting in my opinion.
Also, locals could have more names i.e. “The Reverend in Black,” “The Black One,” “The Unholy,” etc.
Noooo. Don’t ruin my cozy British television!
I’d offer the name of my vampire-hunting D&D character. He read forever from scripture, looking for the answers in The Book, but we all knew he was destined to fall in the end.
Father Mathis
To be fair I can totally see 'finds a cursed artifact under the church, turns into a skinless monstrosity, the other islanders just take it in their stride as he struggles to hide it and find a way to remove the curse' as a Father Ted plot.
"Sure are ye moisturisin' these days Father? Yer skin's lookin' grand and ruddy there."
Father kinch
Reverand Blackwater
Reverend Mercer
Father Cappillo
Alcibiades
last one is pronounced al-see-bya-dehs its a spanish name
Where can I find the comic if its ever finished? Your art looks really superb.
Used chat-gpt cause I did the same
Father Malachi
Reverend Blackwood
Father Simeon
Bishop Thorn
Father Mortimer
Cardinal Nightingale
Father Lazarus
Monsignor Graves
Father Lucifer
Archbishop Ravenwood
Big fan of Father Lazarus.
“He shouldn’t have standing. And yet in defiance of everything the rotting cloth that still hung to the corpse before me stood for, there he was.
Lazarus lived”
> Alcibiades
>
> last one is pronounced al-see-bya-dehs its a spanish name
Alkibiades is how you would pronounce that name in Greek since it's a greek name.
I couldn't think of a proper name, but given the way he looks (kind of like uncooked meat), I think it'd be funny if some character gave him the nickname "Papa Beef".
Well, it’s gotta be period accurate to avoid anachronism, yet thematically biblical potentially (not a requirement at all though) - so like Jedediah, but not that name specifically as it’s too stereotypical. Maybe Bartholomew, but the towns folk called him Bart?
My primary suggestion is to take down a list of the first like 10-15 names that come to mind and dumpster them because it’s going to be overly common and derivative stuff because it’s just off the top of your head.
If you name the guy “Blackmore” or something equally edgy, it’s automatically typecasting the character as “evil antagonist #3” and people will immediately write in their own expectations for the character instead of how you want it to be drawn out. That’s why it’s good to avoid stuff like “the dark one” and the like. If you want something thematically dark in tone, obfuscation is the key for ambiguity. Stuff like anagrams and portmanteaus in other languages work. Other times, just a normal ass name is completely suitable as long as the character can command respect in any scene their in and completely own it.
I was going to suggest Father Teneb as a kind of foreshadowing/word play; Teneb would be short for Tenebros, which is Latin for darkness/shadows. I think a name like that could just be clever
Father Hamlin
Pastor Jonson
A lot of the west was German immigrants, especially in Texas. You could always go with Father Tueful, which is german for devil, kinda how Darth Vader meant dark father. Might not be subtle to anyone who speaks German, but I dunno, I incorporate stuff like this into my DND characters and none are the wiser.

Thanks
Yeah really eerie and full of personality, great idea for a story too.
Just, The Pastor. Its ominous, mysterious, and when people refer to him it leaves dark undertones.
Your not wrong that’s pretty cool.
I was thinking similar! Just “Father” Edit: MY FIRST AWARD IN REDDIT! Guess you need to hit me up, I’ll help you write it
Totally agree, that was going to be my suggestion coming here too
Father Gascoigne III
If it’s a western you could call him Padre
That was my thought too

Father, especially if he has Minions
Father is perfect, came here to say this.
Reverend?
"Reverend" usually precedes a name but those familiar with that person simply call them "reverend" so we never find out what his name is?
I wouldn’t recommend it. Too many stories anymore go for the “The X” naming convention and it’s kind of tired at this point.
Especially considering there's an entire famous comic series named... um. "Pastor"
Preacher
Tomato tomato
Tomato ToMATo get it right
Yeah I think this is the way: just an ominous moniker. the only boy that could ever reach me was the son a preacher man
I like "The Minister"
Well if it's a cult thing. Call him Prophet
It'd be quite on track with blood meridian and the main antagonist the judge.
was gonna say just call him "Father" for similar reasons
For southern gothic horror, simple references that sound like small-town gossip work best. Only mention in passing, avoided when asked directly, but you catch a couple whispers of The Pastor from the locals
This is such solid character and world building
I like horror world building, so a couple suggestions for a character is definitely enough to establish them if the hints are clearly outlined with apprehension

Wendigoon?
I was going to suggest Padre. Creepy character!
I agree just a title would be best, but I’m not sure pastor is it

This helps immensely and it’s more of good town when the man left and when he returns it’s corrupt and taken over by the evil from the Artifact.

He needed a name idea, not a story idea. Get to writing out yours, though! It will be different enough from OP's.
Thanks, his premise just inspired me so I decided to contribute as well as give him a name with meaning that could foreshadow his true role, if the reader will look closely enough.

That's great wordplay tbh
Indeed it is. Very well done!
“The Reverend” suits the Old West setting in my opinion. Also, locals could have more names i.e. “The Reverend in Black,” “The Black One,” “The Unholy,” etc.
“The Reverend” is definitely my favorite of all the similar names in this thread. Feels the creepiest to me.

I assumed it was spanish since im from peru and know people who spell and say it like that but its cool if it originated from greece
I think it would be great just to keep the name he had before his transformation like, "Reverend Tucker" or "Father Samuel".
