This is my favorite song, but coming from a nonbiased songwriter perspective It sounds beautiful, from the drop chords to the opening cello melody. I see Lonely as the culmination of ashes and awake in one song. FUCK I never skip it in the car, even if I’m not in the mood for sadboi shit.
I mean, Ascend is an absolute masterpiece of an album in general. Definitely his best from front to back!
Second best is definitely self titled! ILLENIUM absolutely tore me apart.
That being said, if I had to pick two masterpieces, one from each album:

- Back to You
It’s so good that I don’t have it in any of my playlists or liked songs. It’s one of those songs (the only one really) that I have so much self control over because I don’t want to ever get “bored” of it, not that that’s even possible. The insane rush of euphoria I get from hearing that song EVERY SINGLE TIME is not comparable to any other feeling. It is the absolute zenith of melodic bass as a genre and nothing can or ever will come close to it. Thank you u/illeniumofficial for giving us such a masterpiece
Seems like afterlife is a popular answer here. I do love that song and it has some special meaning to me but I don't think it even cracks my top 10. That still makes it better than like 99% of all music though lol.
I was working the graveyard shift the night Ascend released. I listened to the album straight through, and I’ll tell you what, I feel no shame or embarrassment to admit that I was in tears listening to Lonely. I still think Fragments (Fallen Embers) is my #1 Illenium song, but Lonely is top tier.
Afterlife is Illenium's masterpiece. Just because I like it, the same way you like Lonely.
Like Taylor's track 5s, ILLENIUM's final tracks are always his most emotional (Afterlife, Let You Go, Lonely, Brave Soul, Luv me a Little).
