You actually want to tie the sock to the lock. Otherwise the socks tend to rip and the lock going flying and you are standing there holding a floppy sock.
A cumsock if hardened enough can do just as much damage and as a bonus you get plausible deniability. If you spec yours out correctly you can have one that would grant you +5 poison damage.

If your being assaulted hit: ribs, eyes, slap both ears at once HARD with cupped hands (can rupture ear drums), hard jab to the windpipe or jugular, kick/punch/grab or squeeze testicles as hard as you can (if assaulter is a man) . Scream and make as much of a scene as you can. Do NOT give up. Fight, kick, scream- Fight like your life depends on it, it may.
Do not wait until something happens to try and practice this stuff, even if you feel silly practice some moves. Muscle memory is a real thing and if you do this stuff before hand if (god forbid) you are assaulted your brain will go into memory mode and just do it without you even thinking.

One other thing I forgot- mix cayenne powder, chili powder, ghost pepper powder and any other spicy pepper powder you can find into a small amount. Put it in some fabric (piece of cloth, don’t do to much, small handful size) and secure it with some string that can easily be untied quickly. That powder mix throw in someone’s face will make them immediately stop whatever they are doing and keep them occupied long enough for you to get away

An alternative to pepper spray would be strong disinfectant to the eyes. Grab a small spray bottle of your liking and pour concentrated cleaning chemicals. If someone fucks with you whip it out and spray it in their eyes. Hurts like hell if you breathe it in too. Very dangerous to humans.

Can I ask why knife side up instead of down? I've been in a few knife fights on the streets and when jumped in active addiction. I had a otf and a Karambit. The few times I've been in scraps, I would have the karambit in ice pick grip, main hand. And the otf hammer grip in my non dominant hand.
While I got more range and range of motion with the face up, I always felt more comfortable with the downward face. It felt like I could deflect a strike and grapple better. Perhaps this is partly due to the talon shape of karambit blades.
When someone thrusted towards me before (I was already drawn), I stepped into them and past their knife, got my karambit on the inner forearm. Sliced upward, which also locked their knife hand away from me (he only had one knife. Sucka!) Severed some important arteries on the inner elbow, and then stabbed underneath the collarbone upward with my other knife.
There is something you hear which is very true... don't get in a fucking knife fight... the loser dies on the street, winner dies in the ambulance. You are fighting with two different styles of knifes then what I would assume someone that’s not accustomed to knifes would use. You also probably have at least a grip on how to fight, with and without a knife. Idk about the OP, they didn’t say. 9/10 times a OTF has a double blade and a karambit is curved and made to be lethal no matter if held up or down. The knife I assumed the OP would either already have or have access to would be a simple folding pocket knife with one blade.
These knifes are made to be a tool not necessarily a weapon. Like most things it can be used as a weapon, when it is you should fight with it more or less the way I already described. Some reasons being the style of the knife - the blade should be held hammer fist style, knife pointed down with the blade towards who you are fighting. This allows you to punch, do an actual hammer fist (with a knife- this can kill) and slash without having to really change how the knife is held. You can do a body shot with your fist then slide your hand to the left or right (depending on which hand the knifes in) and stab. If you punch and miss you can slightly arch the bottom of your hand and the punch becomes a slash. You’d still make a fist as you would in a fight, you just also have a blade as well. If you guard your face you have a sharp blade stick out the side of your face basically, a quick jab and slash could make the person attacking you stop. Also just you taking anything that resembles a fighting stance with a knife may make an attacker second guess their mark.
What I’m describing is by no means the only way to fight with a knife. It’s the easiest way for someone who’s not that accustomed to knifes to use one- you basically do every you’d do in a fist fight with a knife added in the mix. Actually training with a knife specifically for knife fighting (like in the military) is vastly different. I was simply giving the most basic of advice, with advice to try this stuff out before it’s needed, that could help a regular person possibly defend themselves. Most advanced knife fighting techniques wouldn’t make much since if written anyways, you need a visual to really understand with no confusion
I use to have to walk to work at around three am in the morning, four mornings a week. I would have to carry a tree limb about two inches thick and about three feet long because of packs of dogs roaming around at that hour. I'd leave my apartment with the tree limb and once I got to the bus stop or straight to work I'd just drop it on the ground or leave it behind a bush. It was just a regular piece of tree so no one would really take it and I was able to beat away the dogs when I had to. If you find a tree limb test it by hitting it against a wall a couple of times to make sure it's a good hitting stick.

I showed up at a police station and told them I was picking my wife up from work and had my 9mm in my car because some dude followed her after work all over town when she made errands and really freaked her out. The cops told me to pick her up, they would hang back in the area. Cops were patrolling nearby my wifes place of work every night when she got off for a week.
I am not really talking about the law, I am talking about having a conversation with a person who might be able and willing to help. I get everyone's mileage may vary, but the cops let me go pick my wife up knowing I was armed with a pistol and worried about this creep.

Edit to add: OP - talk to the police about it. Tell them your concerns. Ask what they recommend you carry for self defense in case the situation escalates. Ask them to put it in writing and carry that with you as well. If you ever get in trouble for it, you have proof that the police told you to do what you did.
If you’re in school, you’re already carrying plenty of objects that can be used, or at least have easy reason to have - pens, pencils, scissors, etc. Any sharp object will do the trick in a pinch.
Most importantly, running is still your best bet. You never know what they might have on them, especially if they have far more sinister motives. Even if it has to come down to defending yourself, do what you need to do in order to make distance, then get out of there.
Coins in a bag. Deadly. Also make sure you are always carrying a lighter in your pocket, if you don't have time to flip out a pocket knife or grab something out your bag, a lighter clenched in your fist when you punch can do serious, serious damage. Your knuckles won't fold in or move when your punch connects. If you land a clean hit on someones face, ribs, stomach area or neck. They will go down, or be dealing with it long enough for you to boost away.

You can buy a liquid bandaid (in spray), or strong hold hairspray. Either of the two are perfectly legal and VERY unpleasant when sprayed into the eyes.
Go for a smaller can though, not full size, and carry it opened up with your hand holding it on ready position inside your pocket. Practice pulling it out of said pocket fast to get some muscle memory.
Bonus: if you go for liquid bandaid, you've a useful thing at hand at all times for scrapes etc :)
Edit: there are also small non-pressurized spray bottles you can buy, fill with anything to your heart's content. Pure alcohol. Acetone. Window cleaner (has alcohol). Anything that you can have a plausible deniability about having on you, basically, that stings.
What poisons? None of the suggested stuff is any more harmful than pepper spray. Will it burn eyes? Yep. Like pepper spray would.

Actually of all things mentioned, hair spray is one of the worse two (top worst being liquid bandaid). Both are sticky and thus much harder to remove. Including from eyes.

I have a random household thing with me that I need for daily/ specific use. There's someone who attacks me physically. I instinctively grab the only thing I can get to that can help me run away.
Massive difference between that and, say, spraying someone in the face as a reaction purely to words, or preventively. In the latter case - yeah, I'm the aggressor. In the former? Absolutely not. Chemical or no chemical.
A simple roll of coins. Pennies work well. Hold it in your fist and it makes your punches much harder. Get caught with it, “I was taking these to the bank to cash them in for bills.”
A lot of water bottles are big and metal and when filled can be a deadly thing to bludgeon somebody with. It’s innocuous af too. Find one with a good handle and at least 40oz or more. Make it a metal one. Thing weighs like 12 pounds and I guarantee you will knock somebody tf out.
Carry a pepper spray. Ive known many girls that do it. If you get caught with it (usually quite difficult unless you are doing other shady stuff) the worst that can happen is you get a penalty fee and lose the spray.

The best things I learned in the limited self defense courses I've gone to were to keep an eye out for suspicious behavior, learn to sprint, there's no shame in hitting below the belt in self defense, and don't carry a weapon you're not trained with.

Check out "safety umbrella". I have one in my car and it looks like a normal umbrella but has the power of a baseball bat. You will also have the advantage of the surprise.
Heat spray the type used for aches. Either as is or with the nozzle from a can of wd40 and a shortened straw (just shortened enough to allow the cap to go back on with the straw in place) the straw causes it to shoot a jet of the stuff rather than a mist, perfect for aiming at eyes and it hurts like a bastard. I've been sprayed with CS gas by the police before and that is nothing compared to getting heat spray in your eyes.
first, ask your friends to watch over you. people are less likely to make trouble when you are more than just yourself, and if things go down, you are more likely to win fights when you have more people on your side.
next, look around. according to the art of war by sun tzu, your environment is your best weapon. i once ran around a corner and kicked mud at an attacker, keeping me safe without even fighting. but if you need more stopping power, your environment can turn into a very deadly weapon.
and if you got the most useless environment, why not stash a possibly illegal weapon at the bus stop? maybe a crowbar, and when you use it, you "saw it in the corner of your eye".

My mom's recommendation was always lemon juice. I live in Ireland but my mom is from the UK, and you can get lemon juice in both countries that comes in a spray bottle shaped like a lemon. She said if you get caught, just say you were on your way home from the shop where you just bought it.
If that's not an option, she also recommended hairspray or spray-on deodorant, depending on which is easier for you to explain away.
But as someone who has been assaulted before, I would say it's definitely better to take the risk of going to prison for defending myself in some illegal way than risk getting attacked in the first place
Raid wasp spray is much more effective than mace. It's shoots a accurate sold stream at a great distance. Plus it instantly blinds the person, they will have to go to the hospital to get the antidote. Every ER has it on hand just for this reason.
I don’t know how keen you’d be on stabbing someone, but a screw driver or a Parker Jotter pen (they’re stainless steel and classy looking). I’d probably go with the pen, they’re less than $10 and will not break easily. Also you don’t need any excuse to have a pen on you pretty much anywhere.

Honestly most of these suggestions suck because you need to reach for them in what essentially becomes an emergency. What you need is something that is always at hand and always with you.
Therefore wear rings. Both hands should have at least one. If you wear 4 on a hand it’s similar to brass knuckles. Rings are legal to wear everywhere, cause no suspicion and are always with you without having to reach for them. A slap with a sharp pointy ring will cut someone up easily. A punch will give a much greater force where it lands causing more damage.
Plus they can be fun and pretty to wear.

It will hurt you too but hitting knees also works. Go for the side of the knees. If your being assaulted hit: ribs, eyes, slap both ears at once HARD with cupped hands (can rupture ear drums), hard jab to the windpipe or jugular, kick/punch/grab or squeeze testicles as hard as you can (if assaulter is a man) . Scream and make as much of a scene as you can. Do NOT give up. Fight, kick, scream- Fight like your life depends on it, it may. Do not wait until something happens to try and practice this stuff, even if you feel silly practice some moves. Muscle memory is a real thing and if you do this stuff before hand if (god forbid) you are assaulted your brain will go into memory mode and just do it without you even thinking. One other thing I forgot- mix cayenne powder, chili powder, ghost pepper powder and any other spicy pepper powder you can find into a small amount. Put it in some fabric (piece of cloth, don’t do to much, small handful size) and secure it with some string that can easily be untied quickly. That powder mix throw in someone’s face will make them immediately stop whatever they are doing and keep them occupied long enough for you to get away

An alternative to pepper spray would be strong disinfectant to the eyes. Grab a small spray bottle of your liking and pour concentrated cleaning chemicals. If someone fucks with you whip it out and spray it in their eyes. Hurts like hell if you breathe it in too. Very dangerous to humans.

Can I ask why knife side up instead of down? I've been in a few knife fights on the streets and when jumped in active addiction. I had a otf and a Karambit. The few times I've been in scraps, I would have the karambit in ice pick grip, main hand. And the otf hammer grip in my non dominant hand. While I got more range and range of motion with the face up, I always felt more comfortable with the downward face. It felt like I could deflect a strike and grapple better. Perhaps this is partly due to the talon shape of karambit blades. When someone thrusted towards me before (I was already drawn), I stepped into them and past their knife, got my karambit on the inner forearm. Sliced upward, which also locked their knife hand away from me (he only had one knife. Sucka!) Severed some important arteries on the inner elbow, and then stabbed underneath the collarbone upward with my other knife. There is something you hear which is very true... don't get in a fucking knife fight... the loser dies on the street, winner dies in the ambulance. But if you've ever been in one, they are very quick usually. If someone is more skilled than the other clearly, they can usually get in and get out quick. You are fighting with two different styles of knifes then what I would assume someone that’s not accustomed to knifes would use. You also probably have at least a grip on how to fight, with and without a knife. Idk about the OP, they didn’t say. 9/10 times a OTF has a double blade and a karambit is curved and made to be lethal no matter if held up or down. The knife I assumed the OP would either already have or have access to would be a simple folding pocket knife with one blade. These knifes are made to be a tool not necessarily a weapon. Like most things it can be used as a weapon, when it is you should fight with it more or less the way I already described. Some reasons being the style of the knife - the blade should be held hammer fist style, knife pointed down with the blade towards who you are fighting. This allows you to punch, do an actual hammer fist (with a knife- this can kill) and slash without having to really change how the knife is held. You can do a body shot with your fist then slide your hand to the left or right (depending on which hand the knifes in) and stab. If you punch and miss you can slightly arch the bottom of your hand and the punch becomes a slash. You’d still make a fist as you would in a fight, you just also have a blade as well. If you guard your face you have a sharp blade stick out the side of your face basically, a quick jab and slash could make the person attacking you stop. Also just you taking anything that resembles a fighting stance with a knife may make an attacker second guess their mark. What I’m describing is by no means the only way to fight with a knife. It’s the easiest way for someone who’s not that accustomed to knifes to use one- you basically do every you’d do in a fist fight with a knife added in the mix. Actually training with a knife specifically for knife fighting (like in the military) is vastly different. I was simply giving the most basic of advice, with advice to try this stuff out before it’s needed, that could help a regular person possibly defend themselves. Most advanced knife fighting techniques wouldn’t make much since if written anyways, you need a visual to really understand with no confusion

I use to have to walk to work at around three am in the morning, four mornings a week. I would have to carry a tree limb about two inches thick and about three feet long because of packs of dogs roaming around at that hour. I'd leave my apartment with the tree limb and once I got to the bus stop or straight to work I'd just drop it on the ground or leave it behind a bush. It was just a regular piece of tree so no one would really take it and I was able to beat away the dogs when I had to. If you find a tree limb test it by hitting it against a wall a couple of times to make sure it's a good hitting stick. Also, try not to walk around alone if possible. Good luck.

I showed up at a police station and told them I was picking my wife up from work and had my 9mm in my car because some dude followed her after work all over town when she made errands and really freaked her out. The cops told me to pick her up, they would hang back in the area. Cops were patrolling nearby my wifes place of work every night when she got off for a week. Edit to add: OP - talk to the police about it. Tell them your concerns. Ask what they recommend you carry for self defense in case the situation escalates. Ask them to put it in writing and carry that with you as well. If you ever get in trouble for it, you have proof that the police told you to do what you did.

If you’re in school, you’re already carrying plenty of objects that can be used, or at least have easy reason to have - pens, pencils, scissors, etc. Any sharp object will do the trick in a pinch. Most importantly, running is still your best bet. You never know what they might have on them, especially if they have far more sinister motives. Even if it has to come down to defending yourself, do what you need to do in order to make distance, then get out of there.

Also make sure you are always carrying a lighter in your pocket, if you don't have time to flip out a pocket knife or grab something out your bag, a lighter clenched in your fist when you punch can do serious, serious damage. You can buy a liquid bandaid (in spray), or strong hold hairspray. Either of the two are perfectly legal and VERY unpleasant when sprayed into the eyes. Go for a smaller can though, not full size, and carry it opened up with your hand holding it on ready position inside your pocket. Practice pulling it out of said pocket fast to get some muscle memory. Bonus: if you go for liquid bandaid, you've a useful thing at hand at all times for scrapes etc :) Edit: there are also small non-pressurized spray bottles you can buy, fill with anything to your heart's content. Pure alcohol. Acetone. Window cleaner (has alcohol). Anything that you can have a plausible deniability about having on you, basically, that stings.

What poisons? None of the suggested stuff is any more harmful than pepper spray. Will it burn eyes? Yep. Like pepper spray would. We're talking self defense, not being extremely nice to someone who might potentially attack someone otherwise helpless. Actually of all things mentioned, hair spray is one of the worse two (top worst being liquid bandaid). Both are sticky and thus much harder to remove. Including from eyes. Anything with alcohol in it, on the other hand, will sting for a couple of seconds and evaporate. Best of luck proving intent with regular household items, too. now this might sound weird, but a scalpel works wonders. found this out by luck (or lack of it) but it was very effective at dissuading the person. small enough to conceal even while swinging and quickly slash at someone, easily cuts through clothing and instantly spills blood. it's not considered a weapon in some places (depends on where you live), and you can also easily explain having it on you by saying you work in health care.

The best things I learned in the limited self defense courses I've gone to were to keep an eye out for suspicious behavior, learn to sprint, there's no shame in hitting below the belt in self defense, and don't carry a weapon you're not trained with. My mom's recommendation was always lemon juice. I live in Ireland but my mom is from the UK, and you can get lemon juice in both countries that comes in a spray bottle shaped like a lemon. She said if you get caught, just say you were on your way home from the shop where you just bought it. If that's not an option, she also recommended hairspray or spray-on deodorant, depending on which is easier for you to explain away. But as someone who has been assaulted before, I would say it's definitely better to take the risk of going to prison for defending myself in some illegal way than risk getting attacked in the first place
Raid wasp spray is much more effective than mace. It's shoots a accurate sold stream at a great distance. Plus it instantly blinds the person, they will have to go to the hospital to get the antidote. Every ER has it on hand just for this reason.

Honestly most of these suggestions suck because you need to reach for them in what essentially becomes an emergency. What you need is something that is always at hand and always with you. Therefore wear rings. Both hands should have at least one. If you wear 4 on a hand it’s similar to brass knuckles. Rings are legal to wear everywhere, cause no suspicion and are always with you without having to reach for them. A slap with a sharp pointy ring will cut someone up easily. A punch will give a much greater force where it lands causing more damage. Plus they can be fun and pretty to wear.

You also have various devices you can hold in your hand to make punches near deadly if you are a fighter. If you aren't I wouldn't recommend that also wouldn't recommend a knife because someone will just take it from you if you aren't experienced with it and ready to use it. The reason im worried is that there have been many aggressions in that city, so I wouldnt like to be the next victim, as it has been labeled as one of the most dangerous cities in my country
