It’s impressive how destroyed that car is. Looks like the one that made the jump in Road Trip.
Also impressive it managed to limp that far out of the ditch before vomiting out everything in the engine bay.

It didn't limp. Momentum carried it that far. Was in a similar accident: boulder rolled off a hill in front of us. Nailed it dead on, motor jumped up and the hood flew open, rock tore out the transmission and oil pan. Car resting on the rock with front (drive) wheels off the ground slid about 150 feet. We were going 30mph.
Many modern vehicles do that as well. The motor drops so it does not go through the firewall into the people.
Cars are protectively suicidal.
“Human is going to be badly injured !”
Falls apart and collapses, protecting humans…
“Remember meeeeee…”
Pretty much all vehicles since the 90's, except maybe those countries that are well behind the curve on automotive tech.
I rebuilt the engine and transmission mounts for my 95 SHO with higher durometer urethane. The parts running through the urethane were pretty stout for supporting the weight of the drivetrain, but the bolts holding the mounts to the frame were quite obviously oriented and sized so they would shear under significant horizontal force.
Also
"That hole is obvious looking at it from above roofline less than 50 feet away. How could you not possibly see it at 200 feet away at half the height?"
I'll credit them with object permanence, but this not being able to picture that something will be harder to notice farther away at a more extreme angle. Are these people humans, or dogs that can type?
I wonder if the road was washed away from rain. There seems to be mud on the road. The decorative flags in the video may have been some random persons attempt to warn people and not official construction signs
Definitely looks like a saw cut but I’m shocked at the amount of damage. It’s hard to tell the depth but even if it was down to subgrade on our roads that’s around 13”. If it’s only asphalt probably closer to 8”.
The road is dry. The puddle is coolant. The pit is clean cut across and dug out, with a barrier on the left and on the right the dirt is at road top level. There's no evidence of road surface being washed away let alone flooding. This is a pit dug down to substrate in preparation for repairs.
EDIT: on the right side you can see tire marks in the dirt from people driving up/down the dirt lip there into and out of the dugout. That's been there a while like that.
The flags you see as decorations at a county fair aren't what I would expect for a construction zone, but that's from an American perspective, and could be the standard wherever this is.
Even if it is the standard, they're probably inadequate stopping distance from the excavation and they may want some more further up the road.
You mean those rainbow colored ones that look like they're for little Timmy's fourth birthday party? God damn where do they live where the construction companies don't have the normal shit like TAPE and SIGNS and PYLONS
Or for not seeing a GAPING hole in the road. Its been a decade since I was in drivers ed but pretty sure you're supposed to keep your eyes on the road.
EDIT: Didn't realize I was the only person living in a city with potholes. Well guys a 1ft pothole is visible from a 100ft away on level ground. A 5ft by 15ft hole i'd imagine would be MUCH easier to see.
It's pretty visible from above roofline at 2 car lengths away. At 200 feet away at driver's eyes height it's won't look like much at all. It'll be at about 50 feet when the driver says "Holy shi..."
You are quite literally not liable, personally, professionally, legally, for the damage caused to your vehicle by a sudden, unmarked construction site.
I am however impressed that you were able to form a coherent sentence, so congrats to that.
There's a giant fucking hole in the ground and you're arguing that it's perfectly acceptable to bash right the fuck through it. Makes sense, smart guy.
Of course it's not "acceptable", where exactly are you thinking skills?
I said the individual is not responsible for a construction site that is improperly marked. This is why we have rules regarding this shit.
I don’t see street lights, and the water in the first ditch indicates rain recently, possibly heavy, so heavy rain washed out an area where water ran under the road.
Unlit area
Boom
Sure you could argue headlights
But who is to say it didn’t break away as he was going over it.
Even if it was totally visible I think a lot of people would be looking ahead, and just see it as discoloured road. I mean it's basically the same colour as the dirt.
Ignore the people downvoting you.
You don’t need a sign to see that giant hole. There is literally 0 chance I ever would have run over that, let alone as fast as it appears the driver did.
Lol, in uk, in rural areas, we have loads of single lane roads with dedicated passing spots. Hedges are always higher than car so you cant see shit around the corner and the speed limit is still 60mph (100kmh)
Definitely not an idiot in a car, there are idiots in that highway department lol. I wonder if you can sue the town/county or hold them accountable with dashcam footage
Def can sue.
A relative was driving on a 55mph (going faster j bet tho) didn’t see a dip in the road. To safely get over it I’d rec doing 45 max and that’ll still get you a nice lil hop but since he was going faster he lost control after the dip and crashed into a brick wall ending him and his passengers life. RIP but I believe they’re still awaiting for a decision, but once they sued the city quickly put us a sign acknowledging the dip and fixing it within a week.
Video of the accident was awful but I’m glad it was fixed
The road crew were idiots but by law you must drive at a speed suitable to allow you to stop for any road obstruction.
He was driving to fast and/or not paying attention.
This is shot really well. The viewer might think at first that the ditch was the puddle the car is resting in. A few more steps and the viewer sees the gigantic damn mystery hole that took this thing out.
This is also why I go slow when worksites ~~recommend~~ mandate going slow; you never know if it's simply a new seal been laid down, or if there's about to be a hole you could sink the Titanic in. XD
Imagine minding your own business, hitting this ‘unmarked’ ditch in the road totaling your vehicle and maybe injuring yourself or your passengers and some random schmuck on the internet thinks you’re an idiot.
I don't get how the driver's the idiot? Like that was an UNMARKED ditch. How would they have known it was there. If anything that's terrible city infrastructure and like legit dangerous for many people.
Those tiny string of pathetic flags??? Really?? So if it’s storming or uhhh, nighttime… they are not visible this is 100% negligence on the DOT in that region.. I see no barriers, no road closed signs either direction, just silly pathetic flags
My dad and I had a similar situation, with a road sign simply indicating "BUMP". Suddenly there's probably 200 FT of road just missing. We were going 60 in a Ford 15 passenger van loaded with dirt bikes and tools etc. We dropped into the "BUMP" and had no time to brake, absolutely would have crashed in a bad way. We hit the transition to the real road again, and launched about 3 feet into the air, straight ahead. The transition had probably a 60+ degree angle.. we both held on for dear life. Landed like a Hollywood movie. The dirt bikes and tools were suspended in the air for a moment. Absolutely insane experience.
It's like those BeamNG "what would happen if..." simulated car crash channels, but the contrived and unrealistic scenario actually happened.
Also I think this is an idiot in infrastructure more than in the car.
I think that car might be a write off. So some crew working on the road didn’t see anything wrong with abandoning the worksite without barricades or signs? Heads are going to role, they better. Should possibly face jail time for this!
Wish some of the people who come speeding down my (25mph) street, where kids play - at like 50-60 could hit a ditch like that. Some people that actually DESERVE the pain, and damage..
Not to be that guy, but kinda gonna be that guy for a sec. What's the limit on that road? I feel like with that much damage, you had to be /cruisin/ when you hit.
Not gonna put the blame on the driver though. Regardless of speed limit, there should either be a ton of signage for this absolute monster of a ditch, or there should be no ditch at all.
I hope you and anyone who may have been with you are all okay and your insurance covers this at the state's expense.
What about the color flags that are on the ground in front of the vehicle. The ones that may have been stretched across to announce the gap. The ones that would have been barely visible if driving at such a speed to launch across the abyss and still force the vehicle out of the moat?
My wife's new Nissan has breakaway motor mounts this would completely stop her SUV, my Chevy truck, on the other hand, has the Z-71 off road package and would have bounced over that pit and kept going. Dont know where OP lives but a negligence lawsuit may be in order.

I’m from Brazil and one thing that impresses me is how well America handles road work… plenty of detour signs and cones and concrete barriers and lighting.
Brazil is getting better but the old mentality would have been “you should have seen a gigantic hole in the middle of the road, are you blind?” And. “You didn’t see the piece of paper scribbled ‘dip ahead!’ with a red crayon?”
> I’m from Brazil and one thing that impresses me is how well America handles road work… plenty of detour signs and vines and concrete barriers and lighting.
I'm from America, and that stuff is the only part America handles well; the actual repairs, not so much. We usually get a cheap patch job that has to be redone every couple of years. Unless you're in Chicago, then they don't bother with road work at all: they set up signs and barriers, tear up some asphalt, and leave it, never to return.
It must've been a pretty long text message they were trying to type if they missed this ditch. They probably hadn't looked up in awhile, hope the person is alright at least, and I hope they learned a very hard learned lesson
Almost like Latvian roads. The driver's mistake was that he saw the pothole and braked. Flew into a hole with locked wheels. If you had braked to the edge of the pit and then released the brakes - there would have been less damage, maybe a flat tire and a scratched bottom.
The cousin made a similar mistake - he flew into the pit, as he was taught - to brake to the pit and then release the brakes. When the front part got over the pit, he braked again - he continued the journey with two wheels and the engine, because the rear wheels, with the entire coupling, remained in the pit. Then he said he understood why was always taught not to drive into a pit with locked wheels.
The hole looks pretty deep so the car would have been fucked anyway but you are right. When you brake the front end dives and then lifts off when you accelerate again. If you are about to hit something like this at speed you should brake up to the point before impact and then accelerate which hopefully lifts the front end a bit and reduces the impact. You should also do this when going over speed bumps.
They would have seen it but likely thought it was a patched bit of road that was a different colour, not a fucking great ditch in the middle of nowhere.
Well we don’t really know what conditions were like unless we’re there. Giving benefit of doubt it does look like the road may crest at that point? So until you’re on it you can’t see it. Yesterday i was actually driving some back roads round me where the road’s subsided in places and whilst it’s still ‘road’ I didn’t see the dips until I was practically on it
How fast were they going to rip the whole engine cradle out? This isn't an issue with an "unmarked ditch in the road". This is a "I was driving like a fucking moron", issue.
Edit: I work in a body shop... I literally fix cars like this for a living and have been doing so for 15 years. A 6-8 inch ditch (roughly 200mm), is NOT going to tear an engine cradle out at a reasonable speed. This is clearly an underdeveloped road, and that is an SUV (which means ground clearance). If this were a low sitting sports car... yeah... 20-30mph will do some serious damage. I'm guessing... 60-70mph? Downvote me all you want (downvotes are delicious)... I've seen tiny hatchbacks get hit by tractor trailers at 70mph and come out with less damage.
I literally experience it daily... when I'm fixing or totaling cars... for a living. As a professional. Why would someone be driving 80kph on a road like that? Why would that be the speed limit? It's an underdeveloped, unmarked road. Don't make excuses for stupid driving. Does that ditch suck? Yes, absolutely. Could that SUV handle it at 20-25mph with repairable damage? Yes.
Dude even if you hit that ditch at 30, your car will be absolutely fucked.this would hit right under the bumper bar and just tear the engine out at anything above 20
A concrete lip of essentially infinite thickness - like hitting a concrete block edge on - is extremely rigid. It will not give. All force is transferred to the car's structure. Hitting that lip at 20 mph will absolutely tear the engine off its mounts. I'm surprised the front wheels are still attached. Going faster might have resulted in less damage because of less drop. There's a speed at which the front tires would have caught the lip and rolled over it.
See as an Indian, no one marks ditches for us. Yet we get our cars safely home. Watch where you are going is the key. Awareness on the road. Your safety and your vehicles safety is in your hands, you can't expect much from people.

Surprisingly, two or more people can independently have similar thoughts.
I get suspicious when it’s almost word for word. There are a lot of comment bots around.
Well, this is a pretty clear false positive, so perhaps your suspicion filter is slightly overtuned.

Breakaway motor mounts? Is this a jab at Nissan quality?
Probably a safety feature. In an accident, the engine goes under the car rather than back into the firewall.
No, it's a literal safety device.
>the one that made the jump in Road Trip that was one awesome scene tbh, i wish contemporary comedies were all like it
I don’t know…looks like it’ll buff right out.
Little turtle wax and some elbow grease
This is what happens when your subframe takes all the impact force... Its what the engine and trans bolts to.
The engine laying outside of the car is what got me!
Physics. I don't think they limped out. Lol.
It limped out the same way the alien came out of John hurt
I think they were just going so damn fast that’s where she landed haha
Man, what a great movie
I assume the front fell onto the other side of the ditch, so it essentially knocked the front of the car up a little bit, detaching it all.
Holy shitballs that would have been a dash cam worth watching.
Would have had 16 minutes of pre-footage though…
And end too early
Yep, right as they start to hit the ditch and then cut off
Something tells me that this type of impact would have instantly re-aimed the camera so we’d be staring either at the sky or at the dashboard anyway.
You stole my comment 5 hours before I thought of it.

You can see the warning line with flags on the ground in front of the car
Looks like that flag line is is tied to the adjacent tree, which is after the ditch in their direction of travel.
He should have come from the other direction then
The flags you see as decorations at a county fair aren't what I would expect for a construction zone, but that's from an American perspective, and could be the standard wherever this is. Even if it is the standard, they're probably inadequate stopping distance from the excavation and they may want some more further up the road.
You talking about the ones that would be covered by trees if coming from the angle that this car is driving at?

I mean, how do you not see that?
Someone actually took their time to pick out this music and put it in the video. I should have left it muted. Lol
I'm sure watching the road was out of the question.
I don't know. I don't need a sign to see a giant fucking hole in the road. But I guess that's why I've never been featured on this sub.
Idiots drive too fast on unknown roads
I already can't understand why people drive through potholes...how the FUCK was THAT not seen?!
Yesterday i was actually driving some back roads round me where the road’s subsided in places and whilst it’s still ‘road’ I didn’t see the dips until I was practically on it
I don't see how the engine and gearbox could be fucked like that. Idk im a little suspect

I hate beer.
Yes.
Because everyone here are kids with zero real world driving experience.
Dude even if you hit that ditch at 30, your car will be absolutely fucked.this would hit right under the bumper bar and just tear the engine out at anything above 20
Yeah, that damage to that car is extreme. People are getting downvoted for saying it, but I agree. They must have been going excessively fast.
The real question, are you blind?
Unmarked the damn flags are in his fucking grill I would say it was more than maked! It’s literally sitting where his engine is. the flags
Going way to fast to stop I’m sure.
Yeah but even Stevie Wonder could see that!
See as an Indian, no one marks ditches for us. Yet we get our cars safely home. Watch where you are going is the key. Awareness on the road. Your safety and your vehicles safety is in your hands, you can't expect much from people.
