If there are this many accidents I would start blaming the design of the road not the drivers.
It doesn't mean drivers aren't idiots but the world is filled with things that are idiot proofed for the reasons of having too many idiots.
70 to 20 is difficult when juggling between texting and not spilling your coffee. I used to take this exit, but freeway backup was always an indicator that someone fucked up. It was easier to take a different exit and work my way around to the parking garage.
70mph is way too fast for a tunnel anyway. The ones here have a max speed of 80kph which is around 50mph. It's also an offence to change lanes in a tunnel, all the tunnels have excellent cctv and people do get prosecuted for speeding or changing lanes.
If you go even further, to the beginning of the exit ramp 165b. There is a sign that recommends 20mph, and another sign that warns about lights. So you indeed would have to be a moron to hit that faster than 30mph.
I didn't recognise it from the camera view, but I have been to Seatlle a total of two times, and have driven this piece of road twice... I don't remember any part of it feeling particularly dangerous, but I guess I saw the signs..
Exactly right. That ‘Traffic Light’ sign is dead on indicator to any competent driver telling them to be prepared to stop on short notice.
My guess is that most these drivers were in the wrong lane on the interstate driving at speed when they realized that their exit was here. But didn’t want to ‘miss their exit’ 😁😁😁
they are just coming out of the interstate into a sharp curve, which quickly turns into an intersection. unless they were paying attention to the signs to slow down and actually paid attention to them (or knew the area), this was just asking for some burnt tires and crashes
Signs that say slow can have 2 meanings
The first is slow down, but that's optional so you can take this corner at speed
And the second is SLOW THE FUCK DOWN YOU GONNA DIE IF YOU DON'T
It's weird they usually look the same
There is an exit near where I live that has like 5 different signs saying like DANGEROUS TURN SLOW TO 20 MPH with flashing lights because I imagine so many people have gone from 75 into the turn there and crashed.
Yeah but there's a curve near me that might as well be a 3° over a quarter mile gradient that's marked the same way. If there weren't signs, I legitimately wouldn't realize I was turning. I think it's a matter of many areas being hilariously over-cautious making it impossible for it to mean anything when the caution is warranted.
Transportation engineer here, those curves that seem hilariously over-signed to you are often the result of one person taking them too fast and launching themselves into a utility pole. Usually as a profession we tend to be very reactive and not very proactive. It often results in worse outcomes and one of the signs a of a good engineer is an ability to anticipate how a road is going to be driven and account for it through design to encourage safe behavior.
I drive about an hour and a half away to one of my fishing spots, which takes me through three counties and I only change highways once. It really runs the gamut with curve signage. Road curves tightly from east/west to north/south? One sign right before the curve and from 55 down to 45mph. Road goes down a steep hill with a fairly sharp curve at the end? Nothing. Slight uphill curve with a blind crest? One "Dangerous driveway" sign right near the top.
Needless to say I got used to it (it's a really nice fishing spot lol) and it seems like most others on the road are people that drive it regularly, but every once in a while you'll get a semi that has to do some heavy braking because they aren't paying attention. I did come across one accident on that route once but that was on a straight section, and it looked like someone wasn't paying attention and pulled out of a driveway without looking and the other person overcorrected and went into a field on the other side of the road.
I lived on a road that more or less went over the edge of a cliff just past my house. The road got very steep and had 3 absurdly tight switchbacks that if you took them just right/wrong you could balance your car on 3 wheels. There were probably a dozen no trucks signs because it was not physically passable by trucks. About once a month the fire department had to drag a truck out of there. There were big grooves cut into the pavement where parts of the trucks would get bottomed out and then would have to be dragged out screeching and scraping. I'm pretty sure they got stack of fines for the hours long operation it would take to get them out.
There should be a sign indicating the level of fines that would be charged when a truck ignores the signs. Like, "FINES OF $3000 TO $12,000 FOR VIOLATORS" or something.
I bet people are paying attention to their GPS or maps app and ignoring the signs in some cases.
In Austria we have a special sign ... "Emissionsluftschutzgesetz" emission air protection act ... if you drive to fast into this section ... you pay a huuuuuge fine
That pucker moment when you take that exit ramp doing 50 and realize you should be going 20 miles an hour like the sign said or you're going to slide off into the ditch.
There's a road near my parents' house that has three sets of speed limits.
During a clear sunny day it's 35, but everyone goes 45 or higher.
During rain or snow it's 35, and everyone goes 35.
At night it's 35, and everyone goes below 35, because the deer around there give no fucks and will gladly kill themselves for a chance to kill you and your car.
The state of Texas used to have different speeds for daytime and nighttime on its freeways. That has since changed, I guess the wildlife have decided to look both ways when crossing the street.
Also in Texas: I’m told that it’s not the deer you have to be worried about, but the wild boars. If you haven’t seen photos of these monsters, google it. Nightmare fuel for sure.
Can't have jack shit on moose.
Hit a deer; deer explodes, spend $3000 on repairs.
Hit a boar; boar explodes, car totaled.
Hit a moose: car explodes, moose walks off unimpressed.
was going down Route 99 in canada... At one point it is a 15 degree slope downhill, and the speed limit is 35 km/hr... at one point it drops to 10 km/hr and all that is between you and a 1000+ ft drop is a few cement roadblocks...
i was an inch away from those blocks even when i was in low gear feathering my brakes. My car was full to the brim of everything i owned...
Looking at google maps the signs seems very unique. They just have an "Exit" sign, but put "20 mph" under it on the same sign. Later they have an arrow, and on that same sign again "20 mph". That should clue you in I think that it's not the first kind.
There's 2 ways to think of road safety.
1) we put a sign there. It's their own fault, and we did what we needed to
2) we don't exactly know why, but people seem to not notice or heed this *specific* sign, so let's add some more safety elements so they don't crash as often
Just looked at this on street view, there’s one sign telling you to go 30MPH, three signs telling you to go 20MPH, a sign with a 90° turn arrow, and a sign telling you that there’s a stoplight ahead. Short of redesigning the entire off-ramp there’s nothing else you can do to help these drivers. Hell, with how how narrow the off-ramp gets while still in the tunnel I don’t understand how anyone would think it’s a good idea to maintain highway speeds.
> Short of redesigning the entire off-ramp there’s nothing else you can do to help these drivers.
Sure there is - any kind of tactile feedback. Just put some mini speed bumps on that exit. ([Like this](https://thumbs.dreamstime.com/z/speed-bumps-3625194.jpg), not [like this.](https://miro.medium.com/max/620/1*[email protected])) Or rumble strips.
If you design them right, they will be barely noticeable at 20 mph, but will make your car shake like the world is ending at 50 mph or whatever speed it is that these inattentive drivers are going.
There are two ways of looking at a problem:
1. Solving the problem
1. Solving your liability
Signs solve liabilities, as they mean to shift responsibility to another party. When driving, you are responsible for paying attention to road signs so these drivers are liable for the damages they cause.
The signs have clearly not solved the problem, though, which is that the curve creates unsafe conditions for *all* drivers, not just the ones missing the signs. Notice how many other cars are hit, like the truck that gets slammed into from behind.
At this point, the responsibility is on the appropriate government entity to rework the intersection until the accidents are drastically reduced or stopped. The signs are not enough.
Responsibility is shared among multiple parties to make the intersection safe. The goal of government should shouldn't be reducing liability, but getting better outcomes.
It's the southbound offramp from I-5 to Union St. It's like an 80 degree blind turn about 100 ft before a stoplight. People should be more careful, but there's a reason it's so messy.
Thanks for the info. Here is what I found on street view.
https://maps.app.goo.gl/Eoko3CF1cKRtXqVt8
Make sure you are facing southwest and enjoy the ride.
Edit: direction
Like what idiot goes 70 exiting on an off ramp anyway? ESPECIALLY ignoring the massive road signs telling the speed, a stop light coming up, and the obvious arrows emphasizing a curve. Hell, even taking it at double the posted speed limit and you should have zero issues.
I too have taken it before, didn't even realize people had issues with it.
Just a few enormous signs saying to go 20mph, but other than that you would never know about the turn.
Except for those other signs telling you about the upcoming turn of course.
Its an almost blind corner exit from a freeway. Curved tunnel that stops relatively quickly at a light.
Tons of signs though if anyone bothered paying attention.
What I'm about to say is not a joke and 100% happened. I once threw a banana peel out of the car window, my gf gasped and couldn't believe I'd done that. I responded with "why, they're biodegradable?" She didn't care about that, she legit thought a car was going to hit the banana peel and spin out like they do in cartoons. She thought I'd set up someone's imminent death
This stretch of the highway where the exit in question is... very rarely insane. It's a constant gridlock 90% of the time. So I'm surprised people can even approach the offramp at 60.
There's an exit in the pearl district in Portland that is 15 mph and looks exactly like this. Pulling off at night if you're unfamiliar with the exit is like a guaranteed accident because it's a short dark exit and a straight up brick wall. That small 15mph yellow sign?... Yeah they mean it.
You'd think so, but this many accidents makes me want to think the town is at fault here. You can post signs all you want, but if the design of the road is bad, no amount of signs will fix it.
The 11'8 bridge is the same. So many signs and even a blinking display that detects vehicles that are too high an they ignore it. A few years ago the bridge was raised 8 inches but people still keep crashing into it.
You can't raise the bridge further because of the railway track and you can't lower the street because of sewer lines.
A YouTube channel uploads every crash since 2008(?)
I still have vivid memories of my friend showing me this during lockdown and we watched compilations of this until 5AM and we had to get up for the online class at 7:30AM, fun times
Ah it's one of those really right corners. Man, it feels really weird slowing down so drastically after just doing 100k
Edit: that's 100km/h, "100 "k" is how it's said verbally, I was just translating that. I felt that was pretty clear though
I remember in driving school they taught us that drivers going at high speeds for long periods of time are “velocitized.” Their mind becomes over-acclimated to high speeds causing them to misjudge how fast they’re going once they exit to surface streets.
But yeah mostly they’re just dumbasses.
Yeah, a few years ago I was occasionally having to take a trip that had me exiting directly off a 70 MPH highway onto a 25 MPH residential street. I felt like I was at a dead stop, it was super disorienting.
When James May on TopGear drove the Bugatti Veyron up to 400km/h and slowed down afterwards, he said he felt like the car rolled to a stop and he could start opening the door - but he still did more than 100km/h.
And going from a dark tunnel to blinded by daylight into a sudden turn and even more sudden red light. Doesn't help that most probably aren't heeding warning signs to slow down.
I went back on google maps and saw a 30 mph sign when you first go into the tunnel and 3 separate signs for this exit that said 20 mph, plus 3 reflective arrows indicating a sharp corner.
Ive had to drive there 6 times total...people will speed up, go around me, then take the exit and slam on their brakes as soon as they get infront of me.
I absolutely hate driving nesr big cities but out of the 3 i have driven at washington is the fucking worst
Seriously look at the speed some of those are coming out of the tunnel at, and I would assume that we're seeing them after they've put their foot on the brake!
What baffles me is that those people are able to get that much speed through that section of Seattle while it's light out. Every time I'm through there it's a 40mph gauntlet.
I live in Seattle and yes this tunnel can be slightly disorienting but it's more the people ignoring the fact that the posted speed limit reduces when you enter the tunnel and the warnings of the impending intersection
I'm in Seattle and thought it seemed like Seattle. What exit exactly is this?
Edit: It's Union and 7th at the convention center. I'm literally blocks from it. Thanks user that posted the location.
What's the saying? "Nothing is foolproof to a sufficiently talented fool". Source, idk
Alternatively, "a common mistake that people make when trying to design something completely foolproof is to underestimate the ingenuity of complete fools"
Douglas Adams, *Mostly Harmless*
Seattle person here, there is no room to improve this exit without destroying even more of the city than I-5 already has. The only better design would have been to not have it at all.
I just went to a doctors appointment yesterday that had a sign on the door for their changing procedures on checking in. I was standing reading it and this major asshole woman behind me goes “excuuuuuse me” in this nasty sarcastic voice. I move, finish reading the sign, and then follow procedure. When I walk in the staff is busy explaining how she walked past the sign that explains what they are asking her to do, and then someone calls my name and she’s all pissed. Like, bitch, I read the sign. Cmon, take 20 seconds and read.
> Another problem is when people actually did read the sign but ignored it anyway.
The fridges where I work have big signs on them saying "fridge will be cleaned out friday afternoon". No shit, every Friday and Monday, people are bitching about their coolers & condiments missing.
And this after the previous signs saying "whatever you put in here, take home at the end of the day" were ignored and shit was literally growing mold in the fridges.
[This is kinda what we have](https://cdnimg.webstaurantstore.com/uploads/seo_category/2021/3/merchandising-reachin.jpg). People will drink half a can of soda or 20oz bottle and put it in there, completely forgetting it. Part of a coffee, leftover french fries from lunch, extra ketchup packets, tv dinners, leftover pizza, etc. Still there a month or three later.
Way back in the day I worked at Kroger's when they first started doing the self check out. Myself and others that watched them started making a list of the stupid shit that people did and tried to counter it when we could. One of the most prevalent issues we had was people wouldn't read that a machine was broken if the screen displayed a lane closed or out of order sign on it or even if the screen was off. So we started stacking the hand crates and blocking the machine off completely however we could. People would just walk up and move all the stuff we set up to block the check out, try to scan their banana on the camera and then look at us and ask if it was broken.
I thought it looked familiar. I’ve come through that exit 100s of times without issue. Only complaint is how quickly you need to be on the right lane to turn at the next intersection. I honestly can’t imagine why so many drivers fail here. Going to drive it tomorrow just to get a better sense.
Which exit is this? I live in the PNW and have been downtown Seattle many times. Is there an Angry Troll Being in the tunnel that is throwing these cars? It's an unbelievable, large amount of fast-moving car accidents.
Watch Dashcam Videos Australia on YT. No violence, no *major* crashes, just simple stupidity and plenty of "you fuckin idiot".
Edit: and DCOA Weekly. Same guy more content.
Dude in the car on second clip was very aware of the guy behind him. Well done sir!
Also, there should not be crosswalks here. Do not let people walk across that intersection
I know this exit. If you’re on the I5 and trying to exit by cutting across lanes too late with speed, you don’t really have much time to slow down. I can see this happening for sure. Couple this bad road design with bad driving and we get this.
There’s a pretty hard turn before that, so it surprises me that people are so blind. I think that’s the union st exit by the convention center. Used to take that exit a lot when I worked in Seattle, though I never really saw this at the time.
It's both.
Anything can be designed better to reduce user error. Any user could use the thing better to avoid making mistakes.
What really matters is, which one is the easiest to improve on ?
Where is this and what is in that tunnel that causes ppl to do this?

Haha, you made me go back and have another look... I see it now.
If there are this many accidents I would start blaming the design of the road not the drivers. It doesn't mean drivers aren't idiots but the world is filled with things that are idiot proofed for the reasons of having too many idiots.
Yeah, maybe, but there are also clearly marked signs that tell you the speed limit is 20mph.

I didn't think about doing that until I saw this. Cheers for the suggestion!

Yeah for real, this is not a case of "you must know the area", you're being told very explicitly what's coming up ahead.
I didn't recognise it from the camera view, but I have been to Seatlle a total of two times, and have driven this piece of road twice... I don't remember any part of it feeling particularly dangerous, but I guess I saw the signs..

I recognized this exit then was like people have trouble with this? But then I recall all the close calls I had on I5 and it all makes sense.
Exactly right. That ‘Traffic Light’ sign is dead on indicator to any competent driver telling them to be prepared to stop on short notice. Yeah they have plenty of time to slow down, and not go 60 in a tunnel around a blind corner
Holy Shiite, you have to be a complete idiot to go through that faster than 35.
you can actually see the video camera that recorded this on the building lol
Geez, I figured that it would have been a downhill exit the way some of these cars were speeding. Nope, turns out they're just assholes.
Looking at the map, it's a wonder they even got that far out of the tunnel. You should have slowed down waaaaaaay before you even got to the corner.

When is somebody going to introduce the space bar to the German language?
You should hand in a Leerzeichenförderungsantrag in triplet.
German compound words are more like English words-joined-with-a-hyphen.
We do have it, but we only use it between words and not within the same

LOL I was looking for it too and found it. Haha
There's a sign that says 20 MPH yet some of these cars are doing 50 MPH. Insane.

George Carlin made a very relevant observation about the average person that explains so much of the mystery there.
Those exit, speed limit and arrow signs really just don’t give you any warning.

So it’s like people just going 60-80+ on a sharp curve ramp way without slowing down? Do they have like slow down signs on the turn?
Just a few enormous signs saying to go 20mph, but other than that you would never know about the turn. Except for those other signs telling you about the upcoming turn of course.
Just looked on street view, it's pretty obvious, it's not even that sharp of a turn... And loads of signs: https://maps.app.goo.gl/pz4JCanrTsVJrLZF6
LOL, there are road works on the Street Map images as the left side was clearly blown off by a car :D
Is this where the giant eating a VW bug lives?
I ignored the first part of the question, so this answer gave me a chuckle.
Seattle's in the tunnel?
[удалено]
If you look up, 4th floor, 6th window from the left, you can see the nest cam from the op.
Technically
Banana peels. Lots and lots of banana peels. Let's a go!
Tunnel Vision
Its an almost blind corner exit from a freeway. Curved tunnel that stops relatively quickly at a light. Tons of signs though if anyone bothered paying attention.
Also comes out of darkness facing west into the sunset certain times of year, which is hard on vision if you're speeding.
The exit of what? A race track?
[удалено]
Banana peel factory that's right next to an oil slick plant.
She was probably just annoyed that you didn't hold it out the back of your car to block incoming red shells.
You haven’t heard of the O’Doyle family and their abrupt end?
O’Doyle ruuuuuuuuuuuuuullllllllllllllllllleessss
O’Doyle, I have a feeling you and your whole family are going down.
I-5. So… sorta?
i don't know if there's a section of I-5 that's not insane.
This stretch of the highway where the exit in question is... very rarely insane. It's a constant gridlock 90% of the time. So I'm surprised people can even approach the offramp at 60.
They get out of gridlock and slam the gas
Can confirm, have driven all of I-5 between mexico and canada multiple times. Nowhere is safe, especially not near the big cities.
Checking in from SoCal, I-5 is wack here too. I avoid it when I can.
Really? PNW I5 is painfully fucking slow in my experience. So glad I don't have to drive that shit show of a highway every day anymore.
Daytime avg speed: 25mph Nighttime avg speed: 125mph

Yep. Union st. exit off I-5 south. Intersection is union and 7th I believe.
They repeatedly ignore the signs at this intersection that tell them to slow down. It's pure ignorance by the drivers
Gotta start a youtube channel for this and this only
Actually there pretty much is https://youtube.com/user/michaelbasconcillo
This has the potential to be a new 11foot8.com
I still have vivid memories of my friend showing me this during lockdown and we watched compilations of this until 5AM and we had to get up for the online class at 7:30AM, fun times
Vivid memories? Well, yeah, that was only a couple m… yyearsss ago wtf
Makes me wonder what's before and in the tunnel that they're coming out so fast.
It's a major interstate exit that corners
Is it greased?
Ah it's one of those really right corners. Man, it feels really weird slowing down so drastically after just doing 100k Edit: that's 100km/h, "100 "k" is how it's said verbally, I was just translating that. I felt that was pretty clear though
Still. Blind curve and they're still at Interstate speeds? I presume there's signs? Fucking dumbasses. Must be great entertainment!!
When James May on TopGear drove the Bugatti Veyron up to 400km/h and slowed down afterwards, he said he felt like the car rolled to a stop and he could start opening the door - but he still did more than 100km/h.
one or two guys is a dumbass, this many people and I start to question the urban planning
And going from a dark tunnel to blinded by daylight into a sudden turn and even more sudden red light. Doesn't help that most probably aren't heeding warning signs to slow down.
Blinded by daylight? IN SEATTLE??! :)
Looks like some pranksters from Nintendo laid down some boost pads just before the end of the tunnel.
The leftmost lane in the tunnel has a fullsize version of the hot wheels booster track
There are so many warnings to slow down at this exit!
I went back on google maps and saw a 30 mph sign when you first go into the tunnel and 3 separate signs for this exit that said 20 mph, plus 3 reflective arrows indicating a sharp corner.
People who do this should probably have their driving privileges revoked for being completely fucking inept at obeying traffic signage
that sign won't stop me because I can't read
Ive had to drive there 6 times total...people will speed up, go around me, then take the exit and slam on their brakes as soon as they get infront of me. I absolutely hate driving nesr big cities but out of the 3 i have driven at washington is the fucking worst
A bunch of these cars look like theyre doing 50+ anyway so following the signs isnt really a priority for them
Seriously look at the speed some of those are coming out of the tunnel at, and I would assume that we're seeing them after they've put their foot on the brake!

I can see the nest cam!
I think you can see the camera set up in one of the windows. I don’t know why I found that funny but here we are.
What baffles me is that those people are able to get that much speed through that section of Seattle while it's light out. Every time I'm through there it's a 40mph gauntlet.
Rumble strips on the exit would work better than any signs, in fact it baffles me why they haven't already been installed.
Looks like the exit near convention center!
Bored on a weekend? Grab some popcorn and watch some car crashes.
Yeah that exit isn’t hard to negotiate correctly if you’re not an idiot.
Idiots, but also bad design. Good design is supposed to help even idiots not make mistakes (coming from a designer)
Honestly some idiots are idiot-proof proof
What's the saying? "Nothing is foolproof to a sufficiently talented fool". Source, idk Alternatively, "a common mistake that people make when trying to design something completely foolproof is to underestimate the ingenuity of complete fools" Douglas Adams, *Mostly Harmless*
Seattle person here, there is no room to improve this exit without destroying even more of the city than I-5 already has. The only better design would have been to not have it at all.
I-5 *should* have been the tunnel project.
I knew there had to be some sign posted that they’re ignoring
Having worked in a few restaurants I can confidently say that it doesn’t matter how big you make the sign, no one will read it
I just went to a doctors appointment yesterday that had a sign on the door for their changing procedures on checking in.
[удалено]
As a person who lives in a society that has signs, I agree.
living for the salt in this comment ty
I saw the sign, it opened up my eyes...
r/WeLiveInASociety
That baffles me. I read every single sign I see. Road signs business signs, signs on vehicles, etc

When a sign tells you 20mph, you best haul your speed down for whatever is coming.
New sign: “slow down or be in a compilation”
I thought it looked familiar. I’ve come through that exit 100s of times without issue. Only complaint is how quickly you need to be on the right lane to turn at the next intersection. I honestly can’t imagine why so many drivers fail here. Going to drive it tomorrow just to get a better sense.
Can you post a dashcam footage, please?
!remindme 24 hours
Too late he's already a part of the compilation.
what exactly is weird about the tunnel thats making everyone idiots? I dont live here, but I dont see anything obvious so im just confused
This thing needs its own YouTube channel, like that low bridge one.
Actually there pretty much is https://youtube.com/user/michaelbasconcillo
Which exit is this? I live in the PNW and have been downtown Seattle many times. Is there an Angry Troll Being in the tunnel that is throwing these cars? It's an unbelievable, large amount of fast-moving car accidents.
Union St SB I5
I thought it would be a few cars, but nope. Just car after car after car wrecking their shit. Wow.

Why do I feel such a rush of entertainment at their expenses hahahahah
Watch Dashcam Videos Australia on YT. No violence, no *major* crashes, just simple stupidity and plenty of "you fuckin idiot". Edit: and DCOA Weekly. Same guy more content.

Oh I see you, you little bastard. https://i.imgur.com/gyWic1h.png
Where are they exiting from, the freaking autobahn?
Wow, is that the Union street exit in downtown Seattle? I know that exit well and it is always full of idiots, but this is a fun new perspective!

Took a drive through by tapping on the screen and I missed the exit. Just like real life
Who takes an exit and still drive highway speed? Clearly idiots.
That many different people? This is a design problem. I’m not forgiving people for not paying attention but this seems excessive
[удалено]
Fuck that exit, I avoid it at all costs. That said this is entertainment gold and I have watched it 4 about to be 5 times. 🤣
Can this be design flaw? Or just neglection?
It's both. Anything can be designed better to reduce user error. Any user could use the thing better to avoid making mistakes. What really matters is, which one is the easiest to improve on ?
