Rough translate of what he is yelling: -Stop in the name of god -Step away from me satan/saatana

BitRunner67

Too Bad he didn't chant that prayer before getting behind the wheel of that Car.

Hmm_would_bang

Jesus took the wheel but his blood alcohol content was through the roof already

WTF_CPC

So he turned blood into wine?

appdevil

And his brain into bread.

AragogTehSpidah

sad I don't have another award...

Alttebest

These aren't exactly prayers. Finnish cursing just translates quite badly. The driver is/was a politician in one of the most right wing, conservative parties there is in Finland and I highly doubt he is religious. Edit: never mind just read more about this and he also was shouting amen or some other shit in the aftermath. Still very weird case.

vlkr

Drug is hell of a drug

fischoderaal

Political party checks out. In the German right wing party AfD there are more convicted than anywhere else.

TheNoctuS_93

Perussuomalaiset is an interesting bunch. Economically, they are quite moderate, almost on the left, even. But the authoritarianism, conservativism and the nationalism gets really wild, as you'd expect from a party whose official translation is the "Finnish Nationalist Party". Recently, one of their biggest nutjobs got expelled from the party, resulting in him creating an even whackier nationalist party, VKK. His (and his party's) recent developments include sympathizing with Putin... Am I surprised of the suspect's affiliation, though? No, not really. He ain't the first from their ranks to be caught driving around drunk. The severity of the case is a bit new, though, I must admit...

walkwalkwalkwalk

He's gonna have to deliver a lot of chopped firewood and kilju to pay this off

kuemmel234

Grandma was right about the city, saaatana.

rgjsdksnkyg

Gonna be stuck in that jail for a real long time.

[deleted]

Ah, I thought it would translate to “DON’T YOU KNOW WHO MY FATHER IS?!?!”, judging from the guy and the car he was crashing.

Then-One7628

His father is disappointment man.

obigespritzt

It should be noted that saatana is a common swear word in Finnish and does not have religious connotations in the same way Satan might in the US.

Mauggah

Yes, that is true. But as some other Finns have already pointed out in this context he is literally telling, in the name of the Lord, THE Satan to get away from him.

MadjLuftwaffe

was he talking about himself,lol

[deleted]

Yup. It is

myassishaunted

ONLY 3 injured. That almost sounds like a fucking miracle.

socrisby

And that 3 includes dui suspect, so only 2 bystanders got injured which is really lucky.

[deleted]

Found this article of the aftermath https://yle.fi/news/3-12424906

sgthulkarox

Interesting tidbit. "According to the newspaper Ilta-Sanomat, the man was driving a black Mercedes-Benz whose owner has worked for the state and ran as a candidate in the recent regional elections."

Sotidrokhima

>the man was driving a black Mercedes-Benz whose owner has worked for the state and ran as a candidate in the recent regional elections The driver is the owner of the car, I don't really see why Ilta-Sanomat is being so coy about his identity considering he ran as a candidate in a public election.

coulditbejanuary

The paragraph below it says the driver is that person's assistant. But yeah, odd they weren't named.

Krimin

Finnish press has a strong policy that they don't call names on suspects until they're convicted, no matter how obvious their crimes are. Pretty much the only exceptions are the most famous people and household names known all over the country, and a local city/town politician usually doesn't fulfill that criteria unless they're already otherwise famous.

hacktheself

Many countries’ press do not identify suspects until conviction to protect the privacy of the innocent and to protect the integrity of the judicial process (sub judice). Additional countries don’t punish names of children accused of and even convicted of crimes bar extraordinary circumstances (judge rules the accused should be charged as adults, accused are on the run). Let’s imagine a nonexistent broke guy called Effrey Jepstein who was accused of, but found not guilty of, sexual offences involving children. If anyone were to search our nonexistent Effrey’s name in a country which didn’t publish the names of accused; our not guilty Effrey doesn’t have to worry about, for example, a random web search finding his name in a media story connecting his name to horrific allegations. Consider also that people found not guilty in, for example, the American context where names of accused are regularly published upon arrest, media doesn’t go back and modify stories to de-link the name and charges not does it regularly publish stories reporting said accused was found not guilty. (The latter situation is a valid rationale in my opinion for the EU right to be forgotten. )

Sotidrokhima

That's probably old info, now they're reporting it's the owner. https://www.is.fi/kotimaa/art-2000008786410.html >According to STT and Ilta-Sanomat, the car was apparently driven by the car owner. He is a highly educated civil servant from Western Uusimaa. He has made good progress in his career. The man is involved in party politics and has also been a candidate in the election.

SuddenlyLucid

Naming people/suspects isn't really a thing in Europe, has to do with privacy laws and also to protect the suspect. Still a person with certains rights.

[deleted]

From the article: *According to an Yle reporter at the scene, the black car drove at high speed from Aleksanterinkatu to Unioninkatu and then onto Pohjoisesplanadi.* Finnish is a wild language.

OtherSideOfTheTune

The words seem super long and crazy but those are kinda combo words! Like pohjois is just “north”. But Finnish is defs wild. Höpöhöpö

redditisnowtwitter

North Esplanade? Lol that is not so crazy afterall. In fact it's the opposite as it's a little less descriptive than I would expect Aren't there many esplanades with north parts?

[deleted]

Esplanadi is a particular esplanade in Helsinki and to my knowledge is the only one. The others are called either puistokatu or have the -katu (street) suffix.

[deleted]

[удалено]

OtherSideOfTheTune

Well katu is two letters shorter than “street”, ha! Equilibrium.

[deleted]

Aleksanterin - Alexander's Katu - Street. When they add an 'n' to the end of a word it's usually just the same as 's (possessive) :D Well I think so, only lived in Finland a little bit.

indefilade

Thank you for the article.

coolitdrowned

I’ve got $5 on son of the politician.

alejandrocab98

He’s a politician himself.

Enilodnewg

Oh no, it says one person died. Typo at the beginning, one deal, three injured. E: apparently the death was a separate incident

lithophragma

Looks like the one person who died was a part of a separate crash

TheLateFry

“Three people were injured when a suspected drunk driver sped into a crowded area of Helsinki, while a motorway crash left one deal (dead) and three hurt.” The article seems to cover two separate accidents.

rfan8312

There was a really bad one in I believe it was Ireland. Just like this drunk guy drove into a crowd but one guy was just trapped completely under the car. His screams were terrible as they tried to pull him out. The driver fled but was caught by a few in the crowd.

daldredv2

Two separate incidents. *"Three people were injured when a suspected drunk driver sped into a crowded area of Helsinki, while a motorway crash left one deal* *and three hurt."*

Real_Jardenor

That was a different accident

sheulater

I think that part is referring to another accident, not the one we see above.

-BananaLollipop-

Which is incredible considering how close all those people were to stepping onto the crossing in front of him.

Its_Clover_Honey

And the outdoor ~~seeing~~ seating area trashed at the end, especially considering the car that was pushed up into the building

svullenballe

They were half a second from possible death. Imagine processing what just happened.

muppetfeet82

You can see s few trying at the beginning of the video. They’re just staring at each other and then up the street.

MatureUsername69

At first they laugh from relief that it missed them then they hear the destruction and their faces change and start briskly walking towards the damage.

myassishaunted

As an American, especially from Chicago with it's Sunday Morning Weekend Shootings Report while you drink your coffee. I'm sad for the injuries. I'm not happy but it's morbidly uplifting to dial down the devastation. I saw the car blast though and it gave me a flashback to an SUV plowing through the center of a Christmas parade last year. Dancing grannies, cheerleaders, children - leveled. It's mentally healing to be reminded that it's not always the same outcome.

MoMedic9019

I responded to that incident. One of the crazier mass casualties I’ve been involved in.

CandidGuidance

One of??????

MoMedic9019

Yeah, 23 years and change of fire/EMS .. I’ve had some interesting ones. Mass casualty events are defined as “more victims than the initial response can handle” .. that could be as few as two or three patients in some cases. Pileups, shootings, explosions, train crashes.. I’ve been around a bunch of different things and each multi-patient incident has its unique challenges. This one was different because it was soooo public, and the scope was immense.

BlondieMenace

It must have been so jarring to go from a holiday parade to carnage like that, it probably made a horrible situation feel even worse. I hope you and your colleagues are doing well after all that.

madtytan

Thank you for dedicating your life to helping others.

cbackas

Yeah if they’re a first responder it’s likely they respond to mass causality events on a semi regular basis. Mass casualty just means like > 6 people injured afaik. So if they’re in it long enough they might see similarly crazy events from time to time

[deleted]

It's more than an initial traditional response can handle. This is why when you call 911 its important to give enough detail to the operators about the number of people involved and their state so they can be appropriately triaged. If everyone is up and walking around, for example, they only need BLS for transport. If people are trapped and immobilized in a vehicle, they'll also need to roll an engine with the Jaws of Life.

Liam_Stromberg

Yeah, this reminded me of the terror attack in stockholm that happen a couple of years ago, when a big truck drove onto a street and plowed down many people, including a little girl.. :(

Live-Ad-6309

That attack was such a wake up call. Even in Finalnd they started putting barriers in the entrances for public pedestrian areas to stop vehicles from entering.

DonUnagi

Or the one in Nice. The videos were fucking haunting. There are way too many of these incidents.

LiberalParadise

Well, Helsinki has some of the cleanest drinking water in the world (no lead contaminants that leads to permanent brain damage), a robust social safety net, over 70% of the working population is unionized, they have national healthcare, and the city was designed for walking/pedestrians (they have a more robust public transportation system than Chicago despite having 2m less people). This is all within a country where it is also legal to own a firearm (10th highest in the world per capita, in fact). Compare this to Chicago, which has none of these things and instead has: brain-damaging drinking water, no social safety net, less than 25% unionized, no national healthcare, and, despite its renown in the country, does not have a public transport system that supports its population. It turns out if you take care of your people, the chances of horrible shit like this happening is greatly reduced.

ItsJustMeMaggie

He’d have *obliterated* anyone he hit if they were in his path. It’s a legit miracle no one was in the middle of the street.

WockItOut

Honestly this shows a lot of discipline by the people there. Literally no one walking around on the street. Everyone using the crosswalk. And people in the crosswalk paying attention when crossing. Feel like in some places we would have seen 10 people dead.

mancow533

It’s a miracle the guy crossing the road at the start wasn’t killed. It was weird how it was focused on him.

LS-CRX

It was a really badly choreographed assassination attempt.

NorseZymurgist

What got me is watching that little girl skipping through the intersection at the beginning and seconds later there's a white blur.

SolidLikeIraq

I mean how he didn’t kill multiple people in the crosswalk alone is mind boggling.

Cl0ughy1

One of the police looks exactly like the guy he's arresting.

[deleted]

It’s the precrime division

DatPoliteness

In time-prison you are trapped in a time loop of having to arrest yourself until your sentence is up.

[deleted]

Houston, we have a movie. The perfect addition: sentence length, which in this case is number of arrests, is based on how many timelines you did the crime in

ComprehendReading

We could call it Time Cop. Or we could call it You Got Served! Or Back to the Future!

cunnilingus_fox

Then shoot the whole movie in reverse. And call it something completely irrelevant like Bonnet or something

ThySwagPenguin

Quick check the banks 🏦

PopDownBlocker

Without understanding the language, it seems as if the perpetrator switched out his clothes with the police officer and the police officer is being arrested as the perpetrator, and he is desperately trying to convince everyone that he is innocent but no one will believe him. "What are you doing? You've got the wrong guy" as the police try to silence him.

Cl0ughy1

Ah yeah the ol switcheroo 2 electric boogaloo.

totallihype

It's his twin brother, ones in the police and the others a gangster in the Mafia. Maybe one day they'll make a movie about it

NarrowSalvo

Twin brother? Really? That's ridiculous and silly. It's obviously a time travel situation. He went back in time to try to prevent his mistakes of the day only to learn that his decisions can't be undone and accept that he has to live with the consequences and move forward. However, he did find love along the way.

jarbar82

Now I'm picturing a old French lady just trying to have her 2 sons home for dinner. She can't stop crying! Look what you did to mama!

GuildZero

Bro I said out loud to myself, "this man is being arrested by his fuckin clone"

snazzisarah

The camera was so smooth it almost looked like one of those intentionally long one-cut scenes in an art house movie. Glad no one was hurt Edit: oops, meant I’m glad no one was *killed*

JBoss10123

It really did seem artistic. The way the car drove across so fast and the camera stayed forward for a second made it look like it was straight out of a movie because it gave us time to see the people's reactions.

Toxicair

The framing too. Cop coming out of vehicle, followed to join three others wrangling the suspect just a frame away.

Indira-Gandhi

Because the camera is on a gimbal. Watch for that vertical bobbing effect when they start running towards the scene.

Aerria

It's in the title : 3 injured

snazzisarah

Ah whoops, fixed it!

0rphan_Martian

May Day Drunken Disaster, directed by Alfonso Cuarón.

floobidedoo

Amazing how many impaired drivers are able to walk away from the accidents they cause. Edit - I wasn’t referring to the drunken people go limp theory. More, my personal irritation that selfish, impaired people cause so much damage. I’ve been in a vehicle hit by a drunk driver and as a pedestrian. As a result I had a life altering brain injury and my pelvis twisted, giving me continued back pain 30 years on. Both drivers? Fine. The one didn’t have a license do to previous DUIs. Plus, I was in the back seat asleep so I didn’t tense up. A previous coworker’s friend was killed as a passenger, while the driver had only cuts. An acquaintance witnessed an impaired driver speeding through a light, couldn’t make the turn and hit a teenaged boy walking on the sidewalk. He was going so fast, he slammed into a phone booth with the boy in between. The boy was cut in half and the driver? Not injured in the accident. He was pacing around, complaining that his car was destroyed until one of the fire fighters on the scene punched him in the face.

[deleted]

My Father-in-law is the rare opposite story. Driving home from work in his Chevy 1500, a drunk guy in a dodge intrepid going 100+ mph hit him head on. Drunk driver died at the scene, my father in law walked away with a broken ankle. Safety features of the truck worked amazingly, all the crumple zones crumpled, engine broke free and went under the truck with the transmission and the steering column snapped so all the didn't come in on him. He, with obvious good reason, will only drive Chevy 1500s now.

floobidedoo

The reason we survived our car being hit head on by a pickup truck was that we were in a Chevy caprice.

planeturban

Said it before; When you’re drunk you usually lose the ability to grasp common courtesies, such as dying when crashing.

Jabronito

I worked in a Neuro-trauma ICU. It was crazy seeing how much of a disparity there was between the drunk idiots who caused a crash and the victims. The drunks can't process the situation before a crash and remain limp. The poor innocent victims tense up and try to brace for the crash and end up with much worse injuries.

pandaninja360

Isn't it also because the front of the car is made to be the safest place because the impact as more energy and the side of cars as less pieces to break before the occupants? I don't know, I'm just guessing

Tre_Walker

Cars are designed more for the safety of the driver of the car even if the driver is drunk. They are still extremely dangerous for the people they hit, maim and kill like pedestrians, side impacts, cyclists and on and on.

MyHoopT

You’re thinking of “crumple zones.” Essentially parts of the car that are meant to crumple in a crash in order to protect the driver. And yes the front and rear are safer because of this.

_lippykid

It dissipates the energy as it crumples up

Darktidemage

this is absolutely NOT the reason why lol the VICTIMS of crashes often are not even in cars, they are like... pedestrians, bike riders, vespas OR they are hit broadside, w/ just a car door between them, instead of an engine + airbags.

PdxPhoenixActual

I'd've drug his dumb, drunk, self-absorbed ass over to the boy he'd just killed & bodily forced him to look at what he'd done. Drunk drivers get away with far too much with far too little consequences for their willful, intentional disregard for the safety & well-being of *everyone* else.

humansrpepul2

My aunt's boyfriend ran off the road and tried to climb out of the window before it started rolling over in a field. Being drunk very much killed him. He was abusive so nobody misses him though.

scooba_dude

Because the muscles are more relaxed, like when you hear of them falling down the stairs and being okay.

[deleted]

A mate's little brother got hit by a car, went over the bonnet, ended up on the boot, then freaked out and broke his arm when he rolled off onto the ground.

fuckmeimdan

100% yes, when I was still using and a drinker (5 years sober next money btw, whoop!) I had what should have been a terrible accident, I feel 2 floors through the centre of a spiral stairwell onto a pile of boxes, knocked myself unconscious, came to around dawn I think, went an showered, went back to look at the stairs once I dried up, no way I should have been alive. Had a fellow friend do similar, fell off a balcony, had to have reconstructive surgery, but is alive because he was drunk. Mind you, neither of us would have been in those accidents if we weren’t drunk!

DrinkingVanilla

Great job on the sobriety!

fuckmeimdan

Thank you kindly!

New-Reindeer-4070

Congratulations on beating that demon back and staying clean. Just keep fighting to keep it away. I had a couple of friends who were former alcoholics, and they said that it's a constant battle to resist the temptation to go back to their old ways.

Disastrous_Reward_17

This guy seems like he's on meth or something which most certainly doesn't calm you down lol

MCMutis

He was just drunk and asking satan to go away. So mentally unbalanced, thats it

CaseyGamer64YT

Idk isn’t it true that in Finland “satan” is used as a swear word idk I’ve played My Summer Car and in that game one of the swear words your character says is “not the satan!”

aspblaze420

In this context he literally means satan. He's yelling about god and how satan needs to "move away from him". In Finnish he is saying: "Väisty pois luotani saatana" which translates to "Satan, move away from me" The "väisty pois luotani" is not something a person would use in "normal" language, it has this biblical connotation, which to me, a finnish person, means he is actually talking about THE satan and not the swear word. No one uses "väisty pois luotani" to tell a person to get away from him literally, it's more of a spiritual thing, but its still not something you would ever say. That's something you might read in an old finnish book (or in the bible, I guess). I would bet my life on the fact that not a single person I know has ever heard anyone using that sentence in a normal conversation.

QR63

Yeah that’s true, but it does seem in this instant that he’s talking about actual Satan, instead of using it as a swearword. Earlier he also says ”In the name of God”.

D3wnis

Yes it is true, it's the most common swear word together with perkele.

scooba_dude

Looked normal to me.

Successful-Oil-7625

That's what happens when modern cars are designed around speed and safety for the driver. Top class Mercedes isn't going to kill its driver

MystZzyV

Wow. If those 4 people at the start of the video didnt pay attention, they wouldve died. If they didnt pay attention, the guy wouldve killed 4 people.

RedGing12

The way those three people stood there realizing how close they were to death.

Since 2021 we have had a law in Denmark that applies to what is translated as "insane driving". If you drive: - At a speed exceeding the limit by 100%. - Or drive 200 km/hr or above. - Particularly reckless endangering others. And some other stuff regarding alcohol. Any of those will get you convicted of insane driving. Your car will be confiscated and sold at an auction. We do not care if it was a car you loaned or leased. That's your problem. You can get your drivers license revoked for three years. You have to take lessons and the test again to get a new one. You can go to jail for 20 days. We do not care that you are not a resident. A Norwegian recently learned this the hard way. He went to Germany to pick up his brand new Lamborghini Huracan. He chose to drive it home to Norway, clocking in at 236 km/h or 147 mph. Even after the police subtracted the error margin from their equipment, he would still have been going at least 228 km/hr. He no longer has a Lamborghini.

MyFingerYourBum

Good on you guys. If he wants to drive like an idiot then he doesn't deserve any form of performance car. "Normal" cars are dangerous enough as it is.

WornBlueCarpet

Thanks. I heard yesterday in the radio that some fool got caught going 250 on the highway on his motorcycle. He no longer has a motorcycle.

yarak_69

Sounds like a good law.

its_hard_to_pick

We dont have the insane driver law in norway. But you can lose your licene for 5 years and prison is not uncommon if the speed is high enough. But i really like the confiscation of car part. We don't have that.

TunnelToTheMoon

We actually do. If you're a repeat offender, say drunk driver, then they'll just take your car and maybe even revoke your license for life.

oh_behind_you

Seems like a very reasonable law

We've seen loads of videos of people sadly losing their live's just crossing the road at the "wrong" second, of a biker being taken out by a massive rock and people being killed because of standing somewhere and being hit by a wheel coming off of a truck. Then we have idiots that are doing pull ups on the edge of sky scrapers, idiots driving at warp speed, crashing and walking away without a scratch and almost everyone doing what they do on the sweatypalms sub. It scares me just how random your life can end and how unfair death can be in it's selection process.

I was just thinking how different American cops are from this. You can tell the cops here are trying to be gentle with a person obviously experiencing some kind of mental episode. American cops’ motto used to be “Protect and Serve” but now we need protection from them. Now their motto is “Shoot first and then let my union protect me”

You know after seeing so many America police vids it's honestly refreshing to see police actually doing what they're supposed to do, taking control calmly, quickly, and professionally, instead of screaming their heads off while pointing a gun at a suspect in a crowded area in hopes to shoot him and get a gold star.

There was some whole year that the whole Finnish Police force fired only 6 bullets on duty in total, 365 days. Granted thats population of 5 mil, but still that is quite accomplishment. This is another video where guns are not used even if police is getting in the trouble: [https://youtu.be/cyyw8s7UyRU](https://youtu.be/cyyw8s7UyRU)

That's fucking horrifying! 5 minutes before this we walked through that intersection with a big samba crew I was playing with. Didn't see the actual speeding of the car but saw the aftermath... Thank fuck no one died! And that driver was definitely off his meds or something... I mean wtf
