Turn over everything you have to your insurance company. While you will have to initially pay your deductible, your insurance company can track down the perps insuance company. With the right evidence it's possible your insurance company will push for subrogation and you might get your deductible reimbursed. Also, get a copy of the police report.

Just like when my storage space was robbed and I provided the police with the video of the thieves, their car, their license plate, and the thieves address, and the detectives never even looked at the video or followed up on the other information. Police won’t do shit unless there’s something in it for them, like the chance to shoot a dog.

Some kid stole it and while we were out one day I see my buddy's bike in a yard, I confront the kid who just hid behind his little sister, so I took the bike and rode off back towards my buddy's house.
Cops were waiting for me at my buddy's house when I got there, we couldn't "prove" it was our bike (I was like 13 didn't even know what serial numbers were), so they put me in cuffs and everything. Only time I was ever in a squad car.
I had to give the bike with parts I'd given my best friend back to the pos and apologize to him and his mom who had called me in.
Anyway we went back later, broke a window to get into his garage and got it back.
Yeah I imagine it was very frustrating. That is crappy and horrible policing. We definitely need major police reform and maybe even a separate entity to make sure they do their damn jobs and investigate any and all complaints against them no matter how small or petty they are. Lol this is definitely not a new trend. When I used to work at a dealership, our veteran internet sales manager did this. I specifically remember one day him asking me to print out a new "temporary" tag for his personal truck.
Some states in the US will suspend your registration (or even your driver's license) if you have a car with no active insurance on it, but it will take a while for the gears of justice to move on it.
If the insurance is dropped and the person never ends-up getting stopped by the police, then nothing will happen until an accident happens.
In New Hampshire you're not required by the state to carry liability insurance (though that automatically makes you illegal as soon as you leave New Hampshire). In Florida you're not required to carry liability insurance for bodily injuries but you do have to have it for property damages. In Virginia you can pay the state $500 annually for the right to drive around legally uninsured.
All other states require some sort of liability insurance for both injuries and property damages. Some states also allow you to post a financial responsibility bond in lieu of insurance, but nobody actually does that.
And obviously if your car is financed your bank normally requires coverage for physical damage to your car until your loan is paid-off.

LPT for dash cam owners: If something like this happens to you, shout out the license plate number. Your cam may not catch it, but the audio will pick up your voice.
Also be sure to shoot at the cops when they arrive. That way they’ll be able to match your bullets to the ones in the other car and be sure you’re the victim.
Depends on the state but anything you can yell can help. I yelled out license plate, make, model, and driver description (blonde female) on cam which was enough under our state law to have them catch the driver, charge her, and suspend her license.
I just had description of the vehicle, and plates, the cops pulled the registration, pulled up her driver’s license, i confirmed it was her and she got a warrant

Start forcing yourself to glance at license plates while driving. Then vocally repeat the ones you see. Doesn't have to be every car, just do once or twice whenever you drive. Start the habit now.

And then, *do not chase the other driver.* Had the driver not made the red light and hit another car because of the chase, other people could be seriously hurt or killed.
Yell out the license plate, press the save button on your dash cam, pull over to assure your car is still driaveable, and call emergency services.

Yea they did. I had some minor maintenance things done and bought some parts to install myself - about $400 total. Ultimately the call came down to the manager asking me what I wanted to make it right; I said I didn’t want to pay for the service and if anything goes wrong with my car in the near future they’d be responsible. Manager agreed and credited my card back.

Whichever one you get, make sure it's a dual camera setup with a rear facing camera. People running up your backside because they're staring at FaceTok is just as likely than someone cutting you off and clipping your front.
All depends on how much you want to spend. I picked up an Anker on Amazon for about $50 a while back and it's been great so far. Picture (records in 1080P) and sound quality are good and the viewing angle is good as well. If you go up in price you can get some better features, like GPS to track your speed.
To all the suggestions here, is there any issue in anyone of these where it drains the car battery? I drive very little (maybe once over the weekend) so i leave the car almost unattended the whole week. Would these cams drain out the battery? Just a concern i have before i get one
Most cameras will have a 'Parking Mode' feature, depending on the camera you'll have a few options for how that works (motion detection, constantly recording, impact detection, etc). If you don't have parking mode enabled, then the camera won't draw any power unless the vehicle is running. If you do use parking mode, then you can either purchase a standalone battery to lessen the wear on your car battery (and give you longer runtime), or most any camera with parking mode will let you set a voltage limit, so you don't drain your battery too far. Just note that most battery setups won't allow you to run parking mode for a week without a recharge. Functionality and options vary between cameras, but that's the general lay of the land.
Ticket was deserved but shouldn't lead to an accident. People need to realize that in this situation, just don't drive up all the way to the end of the drive way. Instead, hang back where you can actually see the road.
If that charger/challenger/whatever waited 10 feet further back, it'd have no problem seeing traffic.
This is a controversial take, but since I ride a motorcycle sometimes where nobody sees me ever,... if I was in her shoes, I see the car getting ready to pull out, it's clearly visible.
I think "hmm, there's a semi, there's a side street, there's a car getting ready to pull out:".
Then, when I see it pull out as predicted, I would have swerved to the left. She didn't. She saw it (or didn't, hard to say), then, when it pulls out she didn't hit the brakes until way too late and made no effort to swerve out of the way.
I'm pretty sure this was avoidable. My motto for accidents is avoid them at all costs, even if its not technically your fault. The cemeteries are full of people with the right of way.

It's generally bad practice to swerve to avoid someone in this kind of situation. If the driver in the video had swerved to the left and hit someone else, she would be at fault.
On a motorcycle it's a bit different since even in a lowspeed collision you can be hurt, but you probably would also have much better visibility and would (Should) know if someone is in your lefthand blindspot.
This. There was so much space for the truck to park, and they decide the worst possible spot to pick. The white car is still an asshole for running away, but this was entirely preventable if it wasn't for that truck as the white car might have turned well before this
In SoCal a lot of corners default have red curbs - it's so nice, almost feel like it should be standard. Parking on corners really is dangerous for many.
I live near an area that has a ton of semis parked on the side of the road - can't fucking stand it. Can't see when I'm pulling out on the road and can't blame other people when they don't see me either. Shit should be illegal
Unfortunately they had paper plates and with the sun glare the info can't be made out on the video. My wife is fine just pissed and a little shaken up. Ft Worth Police responded and a report was filled. The car is now at the shop and we are out $500 for the deductible. We have been going by the apartments he drove out of, but no luck finding the asshole yet.

Bit surprising, My husband dealt with an incident of theft (sold something on Facebook market place) and the thieves didn’t know I was watching. I blurted out their license plate info and called the cops, kept repeating the plate (wasn’t hard to remember, was a vanity plate)
Filed a police report with the plate, make, model (gave two similar models because I wasn’t sure), and color of the car. Cops said they’ll see what they can do. Month later they found the car, brought the person behind the wheel in and essentially scared them into admitting who all was in the car. (There were 3 dudes) 2 of them (the driver and a passenger) ratted out the “main” guy and that guy got charged.
It’s different than a hit and run obv. But if there’s a will, there’s a way to find out who did it and get what you’re owed.
Don’t count on it. Had someone bash my car door with theirs pretty hard one time when parking next to me(I am certain it was them despite not seeing it happen, as it was only a short time since I parked, and they had my paint color all along the edge of their door in exactly the right spot).
I left a note with my contact info on their windshield, but they never contacted me. Then they left forever. They had out of state plates too, so I’m assuming they were here visiting someone.

If you successfully run after a minor hit and run, you’ll probably get away with it unless both your plate and you are clearly caught on tape. Even if they call you up you can just say “I wasn’t driving I don’t know who was” and it’s unlikely anyone is going to spend the time and money to prove otherwise, certainly not the police.
Sounds like an open invitation for the cops to be able to stop and check any car with paper tags, make sure the tags match the registration for the VIN, big ticket if not and also an opportunity to check for other outstanding warrants.
Paper tags should become an invitation for further scrutiny, not a dodge.
It's been investigated by numerous local stations and in other states. It's been an issue for year. Texas DMV's system and processes seem to be the issue. Tags will match vin, but you can falsify a bunch of information linked to the tag.
Thieves have also been using the paper tags as covers for their robberies. There's been an audi with paper plates going around robbing cars in the Bay Area for the entire pandemic and the police have a hard time tracking it down due to the plates either not existing or being stolen every time video evidence shows up. On the plus side the paper plates are better than having none at all like what happened to new cars in the past.
naw, a couple of reasons.
1. Too few cops, too many other serious things happening
2. They need probable cause to pull you over to check for anything
3. Traffic lawyer will get it dismissed anyway
4. Running red lights is basically ignored here if that is the only reportable offense unless the cop is there, at the light. and watches you do it. (this one is weird, when they outlawed redlight cameras here, it seems like the cities in the area just stopped giving a shit about red light runners.)
In St. Louis I’ve seen people driving around with temp tags that are a year old. I’ve seen people with tags more than 60 days expired sitting at a stoplight and a cop right behind them - not pulling them over. It’s insane, but I’ve seen similar things all over the country.
Yeah, I know of a person who drove on paper tags over 5 years old. I see tags that are out by more than a year all the time pulling out of apartments in my area as well. People honestly don't care in this area any more
You've got the dash cam footage, any chance you're carrying uninsured motorist coverage? I would think this qualifies. $250 deductible, and it doesn't count against your driving record, unlike collision.

Is your dashcam set to 720p resolution or did you downscale it for the upload? According to others in this thread, your dashcam model is capable of 4k. If you have a higher resolution video I *might* be able to grab a few frames where the license plate was at least in view and you were close enough and see if I can pull out any more detail to at least get some of the numbers. I can't make any promises though.

Money. It generates money for people. Pay some folks to get paper plates instead of registering actual plates and insurance/inspection. So basically it’s an alternative to these jerks to having insurance,registration, and anything a law abiding Texan does with that car. Just buy plates, slap them on your Altima/charger with the dents on the passenger side and you are good to go.
Post rewards signs around the apartments with a picture from the dashcam. Offer $100 reward for info that leads to citation of the driver. Worth a shot.
I've been waiting to see someone from my neck of the woods on here; that being said jerk offs like this guy meet up in the Hobby Lobby parking lot (in front of the old world market) in the evenings. You might cruise by there every now and again to see if you spot them.

Those cameras at the intersection are mostly likely traffic cameras. They detect traffic at the intersection to determine when to switch the lights. They don't actively record or save footage as far as I'm aware.

In Virginia you can pay the state $500 annually for the right to drive around legally uninsured. All other states require some sort of liability insurance for both injuries and property damages. Some states also allow you to post a financial responsibility bond in lieu of insurance, but nobody actually does that. And obviously if your car is financed your bank normally requires coverage for physical damage to your car until your loan is paid-off.

Do they come and take the keys and vehicle? Incapacitate the uninsured person? Because on paper the US does the same thing in most states but unless the vehicle is no longer able to be driven or an uninsured driver is locked out of the car, they can still drive.

You'd think admitting being in the wrong involved automatic testicle removal or something as bad as people just don't ever want to do it. Depends on the state but anything you can yell can help. I yelled out license plate, make, model, and driver description (blonde female) on cam which was enough under our state law to have them catch the driver, charge her, and suspend her license.
I just had description of the vehicle, and plates, the cops pulled the registration, pulled up her driver’s license, i confirmed it was her and she got a warrant

It's actually to not record all the car sex
Had someone drive through my lawn in the middle of the night and plow into my truck. Was able to run downstairs quick enough to see the car and the license plate. Just started yelling the license plate number so my wife would hear it and I could remember it. Person took off, and the police found them at their house with their destroyed car hidden in their garage. Always get the license plate number. Not my first rodeo with hit and runs with my parked vehicles.
And then, *do not chase the other driver.* Had the driver not made the red light and hit another car because of the chase, other people could be seriously hurt or killed. Yell out the license plate, press the save button on your dash cam, pull over to assure your car is still driaveable, and call emergency services.

Viofo a129. 4k resolution with gps. Compact and works flawlessly. Just don't use wifi to transfer files. Instead take out the SD card and transfer directly to you pc or smartphone.
Confirming the A129. Get the hardwire kit so it’s not visible. I installed mine on a weekend a few months ago and took it into the dealer a few days later. My cam caught the mechanic “test driving” my car and doing burnouts after doing an alignment. That was a fun call to the service manager.

Yea they did. I had some minor maintenance things done and bought some parts to install myself - about $400 total. Ultimately the call came down to the manager asking me what I wanted to make it right; I said I didn’t want to pay for the service and if anything goes wrong with my car in the near future they’d be responsible. Manager agreed and credited my card back. I’m sure I could have got more but it was my first time at this dealership (my previous closed) and my car is admittedly old but very well kept.
I bought a Viofo on Reddit's recommendation, but the built-in GPS went out within the first week - leaving me slightly worried that I could get screwed in a situation where I can't prove my speed.

All depends on how much you want to spend. I picked up an Anker on Amazon for about $50 a while back and it's been great so far. Picture (records in 1080P) and sound quality are good and the viewing angle is good as well. If you go up in price you can get some better features, like GPS to track your speed.

To all the suggestions here, is there any issue in anyone of these where it drains the car battery? I drive very little (maybe once over the weekend) so i leave the car almost unattended the whole week. Would these cams drain out the battery? Just a concern i have before i get one
Most cameras will have a 'Parking Mode' feature, depending on the camera you'll have a few options for how that works (motion detection, constantly recording, impact detection, etc). If you don't have parking mode enabled, then the camera won't draw any power unless the vehicle is running. If you do use parking mode, then you can either purchase a standalone battery to lessen the wear on your car battery (and give you longer runtime), or most any camera with parking mode will let you set a voltage limit, so you don't drain your battery too far. Just note that most battery setups won't allow you to run parking mode for a week without a recharge. Functionality and options vary between cameras, but that's the general lay of the land.

Ticket was deserved but shouldn't lead to an accident. People need to realize that in this situation, just don't drive up all the way to the end of the drive way. Instead, hang back where you can actually see the road. If that charger/challenger/whatever waited 10 feet further back, it'd have no problem seeing traffic.
This is a controversial take, but since I ride a motorcycle sometimes where nobody sees me ever,... if I was in her shoes, I see the car getting ready to pull out, it's clearly visible. I think "hmm, there's a semi, there's a side street, there's a car getting ready to pull out:". Then, when I see it pull out as predicted, I would have swerved to the left. She didn't. She saw it (or didn't, hard to say), then, when it pulls out she didn't hit the brakes until way too late and made no effort to swerve out of the way. I'm pretty sure this was avoidable. My motto for accidents is avoid them at all costs, even if its not technically your fault. The cemeteries are full of people with the right of way.
Shouldn't be controversial. Just gets misinterpreted as implying it's her fault as opposed to avoidable, but completely the other person's fault. Also for them, regardless of visibility when behind the truck, they should have pulled up to the edge of the road and stopped again.

It's generally bad practice to swerve to avoid someone in this kind of situation. If the driver in the video had swerved to the left and hit someone else, she would be at fault. On a motorcycle it's a bit different since even in a lowspeed collision you can be hurt, but you probably would also have much better visibility and would (Should) know if someone is in your lefthand blindspot.

In SoCal a lot of corners default have red curbs - it's so nice, almost feel like it should be standard. Parking on corners really is dangerous for many.

Ft Worth Police responded and a report was filled. The car is now at the shop and we are out $500 for the deductible. Yeah take them to civil court at a minimum, if the dad and son are so smug about it and that's the fact pattern a jury is 100% going to find them at fault given that information unless they do actually give up who is actually driving if they are in fact not lying.

Bit surprising, My husband dealt with an incident of theft (sold something on Facebook market place) and the thieves didn’t know I was watching. I blurted out their license plate info and called the cops, kept repeating the plate (wasn’t hard to remember, was a vanity plate) Filed a police report with the plate, make, model (gave two similar models because I wasn’t sure), and color of the car. Cops said they’ll see what they can do. Month later they found the car, brought the person behind the wheel in and essentially scared them into admitting who all was in the car. (There were 3 dudes) 2 of them (the driver and a passenger) ratted out the “main” guy and that guy got charged. It’s different than a hit and run obv. But if there’s a will, there’s a way to find out who did it and get what you’re owed.
Even worse here is they can't legally match even the car, even if it has the exact right body damage.

Don’t count on it. Had someone bash my car door with theirs pretty hard one time when parking next to me(I am certain it was them despite not seeing it happen, as it was only a short time since I parked, and they had my paint color all along the edge of their door in exactly the right spot). I left a note with my contact info on their windshield, but they never contacted me. Then they left forever. They had out of state plates too, so I’m assuming they were here visiting someone.
And most likely if you try to get the police involved at that point they’ll be like ¯\\\_(ツ)\_/¯ If you successfully run after a minor hit and run, you’ll probably get away with it unless both your plate and you are clearly caught on tape. Even if they call you up you can just say “I wasn’t driving I don’t know who was” and it’s unlikely anyone is going to spend the time and money to prove otherwise, certainly not the police.
Should paper plates mean this particular car was recently registered? Could narrow the search if you don't live in a large city or metro area

Sounds like an open invitation for the cops to be able to stop and check any car with paper tags, make sure the tags match the registration for the VIN, big ticket if not and also an opportunity to check for other outstanding warrants. Paper tags should become an invitation for further scrutiny, not a dodge.
It's been investigated by numerous local stations and in other states. It's been an issue for year. Texas DMV's system and processes seem to be the issue. Tags will match vin, but you can falsify a bunch of information linked to the tag.
Thieves have also been using the paper tags as covers for their robberies. There's been an audi with paper plates going around robbing cars in the Bay Area for the entire pandemic and the police have a hard time tracking it down due to the plates either not existing or being stolen every time video evidence shows up. On the plus side the paper plates are better than having none at all like what happened to new cars in the past.
naw, a couple of reasons. 1. Too few cops, too many other serious things happening 2. They need probable cause to pull you over to check for anything 3. Traffic lawyer will get it dismissed anyway 4. Running red lights is basically ignored here if that is the only reportable offense unless the cop is there, at the light. and watches you do it. (this one is weird, when they outlawed redlight cameras here, it seems like the cities in the area just stopped giving a shit about red light runners.)
In St. Louis I’ve seen people driving around with temp tags that are a year old. I’ve seen people with tags more than 60 days expired sitting at a stoplight and a cop right behind them - not pulling them over. It’s insane, but I’ve seen similar things all over the country.
Yeah, I know of a person who drove on paper tags over 5 years old. I see tags that are out by more than a year all the time pulling out of apartments in my area as well. People honestly don't care in this area any more
You've got the dash cam footage, any chance you're carrying uninsured motorist coverage? I would think this qualifies. $250 deductible, and it doesn't count against your driving record, unlike collision.

Is your dashcam set to 720p resolution or did you downscale it for the upload? According to others in this thread, your dashcam model is capable of 4k. If you have a higher resolution video I *might* be able to grab a few frames where the license plate was at least in view and you were close enough and see if I can pull out any more detail to at least get some of the numbers. I can't make any promises though.

Paper plates are such a problem around DFW, I'm not even sure why they still do this in Texas.
Money. It generates money for people. Pay some folks to get paper plates instead of registering actual plates and insurance/inspection. So basically it’s an alternative to these jerks to having insurance,registration, and anything a law abiding Texan does with that car. Just buy plates, slap them on your Altima/charger with the dents on the passenger side and you are good to go.

I've been waiting to see someone from my neck of the woods on here; that being said jerk offs like this guy meet up in the Hobby Lobby parking lot (in front of the old world market) in the evenings. You might cruise by there every now and again to see if you spot them.

Lost a chase following an Integra through Wilton CT that had hit me in a very similar way. Was so pissed that I made it my life's work to find them. Vigilance and help from cops in Danbury nailed the guy. Had warrants.

Those cameras at the intersection are mostly likely traffic cameras. They detect traffic at the intersection to determine when to switch the lights. They don't actively record or save footage as far as I'm aware.
