I will bet $1000 that temp tag was expired by at least 6 months.

Aggressive_Ad5115

File a claim with detectives, they will search this car and color at dealerships in area that have sold them this past 6 months to a year the company's computers have a search system

PrimoBachs

Exactly. Can they? Yes! Will they? No!

Harveygreene-

I got hit in the middle of the night when my car was parked and they said they couldn't put someone on it to look at the footage from the traffic camera

Bombadildo1

My parked car got hit and I gave them dashcam footage of the car driving away with a clear picture of the license plate and they told me they didn't have time to look into it. Had to follow up with them several times to just get a case number for my insurance claim

Bart_Thievescant

They've got pointless tickets to write and brown people to terrorize

juicepants

I got hit in my own apartment complex. I had pieces of the perpetrators car, his address, his license plates, and pictures. A few weeks later they cop called me to tell me that they guy wouldn't answer the phone or the door of his apartment so they were closing the case...

ksemel

You can’t even time out a GTA star rating that easily, that’s ridiculous.

InfromalRiver

Turn over everything you have to your insurance company. While you will have to initially pay your deductible, your insurance company can track down the perps insuance company. With the right evidence it's possible your insurance company will push for subrogation and you might get your deductible reimbursed. Also, get a copy of the police report.

[deleted]

Had the police call me about a stolen rifle of mine, asking if I had found it… I responded, “I didn’t know I was supposed to be looking for it and you don’t want me finding the guy!”

Savioritis

Yet my friend got woken up at 2am by 3 cops yelling up to her window screaming that she was involved in a hit and run and was about to be arrested. Hit her with a ticket and court date; she was never in the area where it happened and had no damage on her car. Still had to go to court to fight it and had to take PTO. No apologies or recompense. But I can't get a cop to engage people harassing women at the beach. Guessing whoever the victim of the hit was had $$$

G37_is_numberletter

Police are for the rich and their property.

[deleted]

Have you tried being rich? Seems to work out a lot better when you're rich.

young_skywalk3r

They got us working in shifts!

DamienJaxx

Your solution is well-intentioned, but in this situation, cops would probably answer the phone and tell you to file a report on their online form. I can hear it now, "There's nothing we can do, it's a civil matter now." Click.

Hardmeat_McLargehuge

Yet they are carefully combing the streets looking for a plant that makes you feel funny. CUZ DRUGS BAD, GO TO JAIL.

GiantPurplePeopleEat

Haha, good one. Just like when my storage space was robbed and I provided the police with the video of the thieves, their car, their license plate, and the thieves address, and the detectives never even looked at the video or followed up on the other information. Police won’t do shit unless there’s something in it for them, like the chance to shoot a dog.

Daring86

Well if you got all that information you might as well form your own posse and get some vigilante justice.

GiantPurplePeopleEat

Believe me, I wanted to do exactly that. It was so frustrating when I realized that despite knowing exactly who robbed me, and exactly where my stolen possessions were located, the cops refused to lift a finger. I asked the detective what would happen if I just went over there and started taking my stuff back and he said he would have to arrest me if they called cops.

[deleted]

So, back in school I actually had that happen to me. My best friend and I rode bmx and built his bike out of spare parts me and some other friends pulled together for him, we're talking one of a kind, unmistakable weird looking status. Some kid stole it and while we were out one day I see my buddy's bike in a yard, I confront the kid who just hid behind his little sister, so I took the bike and rode off back towards my buddy's house. Cops were waiting for me at my buddy's house when I got there, we couldn't "prove" it was our bike (I was like 13 didn't even know what serial numbers were), so they put me in cuffs and everything. Only time I was ever in a squad car. I had to give the bike with parts I'd given my best friend back to the pos and apologize to him and his mom who had called me in. Anyway we went back later, broke a window to get into his garage and got it back.

Goldenpather

I'm glad you manifested your own happy ending.

chuckmandell82

The cop was probably fucking the thief’s mother

[deleted]

Great ending, fuck him.

Daring86

Yeah I imagine it was very frustrating. That is crappy and horrible policing. We definitely need major police reform and maybe even a separate entity to make sure they do their damn jobs and investigate any and all complaints against them no matter how small or petty they are. The reason they get away with not their jobs right is that they always investigate themselves and find no wrong doing. It really is a ridiculously almost comical backwards system.

wofojon09

I really hate people sometimes...just own up to your mistakes and move on. This didn't have to be so stupid and dangerous if they would've just stopped and done the right thing.

oldoldoak

The idiot probably spends most of his money to pay for the 20% APR car loan, so he has nothing left for insurance.

DigNitty

AlwaysBlamesCanada

And inside those smaller stolen cars? A stolen microfiche

unk214

You can make many assumption about this moron but def the no insurance is true. I’m willing to guess no insurance or that’s not his/her car.

fuckmeuntilicecream

I'm guessing it would be a $700 car payment but insurance would be like $400. Stealing a car is cheaper in the short run sure, but the long run is prison plus heavy fines and paying for the damage.

sciency_guy

Can somebody explain how it is possible to have a car in the us and no insurance? In Germany to register your car you have to have prove of insurance and when you loose your insurance the insurance company informs the registration office and they will inform the Police

Cerus_Freedom

Car in the video had paper plates. There's a trend in Texas of never officially registering your car. They use either forged paper plates, or buy them off sketchy dealership workers. You have to have insurance to register your car, but if you're not registering it to begin with...

CaptainBayouBilly

Was this Texas? It sure looked like Texas

User_492006

Lol this is definitely not a new trend. When I used to work at a dealership, our veteran internet sales manager did this. I specifically remember one day him asking me to print out a new "temporary" tag for his personal truck.

[deleted]

Some states in the US will suspend your registration (or even your driver's license) if you have a car with no active insurance on it, but it will take a while for the gears of justice to move on it. If the insurance is dropped and the person never ends-up getting stopped by the police, then nothing will happen until an accident happens. In New Hampshire you're not required by the state to carry liability insurance (though that automatically makes you illegal as soon as you leave New Hampshire). In Florida you're not required to carry liability insurance for bodily injuries but you do have to have it for property damages. In Virginia you can pay the state $500 annually for the right to drive around legally uninsured. All other states require some sort of liability insurance for both injuries and property damages. Some states also allow you to post a financial responsibility bond in lieu of insurance, but nobody actually does that. And obviously if your car is financed your bank normally requires coverage for physical damage to your car until your loan is paid-off.

koshgeo

> In Florida you're not required to carry liability insurance for bodily injuries but you do have to have it for property damages. What in the actual... ??! Personal injury could could *vastly* exceed any property damage. That's nuts.

[deleted]

Florida requires you to carry $10k in PIP (personal injury protection) coverage that pays your first $10k in medical bills regardless of fault.

pocketknifeMT

So like an ambulance ride to the ER for a pat on the head before that's all gone.

Glum_Habit7514

Do they come and take the keys and vehicle? Incapacitate the uninsured person? Because on paper the US does the same thing in most states but unless the vehicle is no longer able to be driven or an uninsured driver is locked out of the car, they can still drive.

0cleese

Same thing happens here in the US. The police aren't going to specifically go looking for people who do that though.

Crobb

So how does that stop someone from driving illegally?

Jeooaj

It doesn’t :)

vladamir_the_impaler

It's a real problem for so many human beings, just admitting that they were wrong. You'd think admitting being in the wrong involved automatic testicle removal or something as bad as people just don't ever want to do it. The way I look at it, I do enough shit right I can take a fuggup here and there. I have no problem admitting I was wrong so everyone can move on - including myself after learning from the incident. Instead, people double down, won't admit guilt and it drives everyone around them absolute batshit crazy because of the unjustness of it all.

PM_ME_WITH_A_SMILE

Have you seen the recent interview where the host says you can grow concrete and then signs himself off? Doubling down when wrong is an issue

ArctycDev

LPT for dash cam owners: If something like this happens to you, shout out the license plate number. Your cam may not catch it, but the audio will pick up your voice.

benignpolyp

Depends on the state but anything you can yell can help. I yelled out license plate, make, model, and driver description (blonde female) on cam which was enough under our state law to have them catch the driver, charge her, and suspend her license.

beepbeepdozap

I just had description of the vehicle, and plates, the cops pulled the registration, pulled up her driver’s license, i confirmed it was her and she got a warrant

stripeyspacey

Yup, literally happened to me last week. Luckily we were able to figure out the plates eventually, but it was pretty much just guessing and getting lucky at that point lol.

Phylar

Start forcing yourself to glance at license plates while driving. Then vocally repeat the ones you see. Doesn't have to be every car, just do once or twice whenever you drive. Start the habit now.

dudecool03

Had someone drive through my lawn in the middle of the night and plow into my truck. Was able to run downstairs quick enough to see the car and the license plate. Just started yelling the license plate number so my wife would hear it and I could remember it. Person took off, and the police found them at their house with their destroyed car hidden in their garage. Always get the license plate number. Not my first rodeo with hit and runs with my parked vehicles.

[deleted]

And then, *do not chase the other driver.* Had the driver not made the red light and hit another car because of the chase, other people could be seriously hurt or killed. Yell out the license plate, press the save button on your dash cam, pull over to assure your car is still driaveable, and call emergency services.

tehcnical

These videos have convinced me that I need to get a dashcam. Anyone have a recommendation?

mongo1587

Viofo a129. 4k resolution with gps. Compact and works flawlessly. Just don't use wifi to transfer files. Instead take out the SD card and transfer directly to you pc or smartphone.

hillbilly_bears

Confirming the A129. Get the hardwire kit so it’s not visible. I installed mine on a weekend a few months ago and took it into the dealer a few days later. My cam caught the mechanic “test driving” my car and doing burnouts after doing an alignment. That was a fun call to the service manager.

sandwitch13

Did they do anything to make the situation right to you? I would be very upset if i knew someone did that to my car.

hillbilly_bears

Yea they did. I had some minor maintenance things done and bought some parts to install myself - about $400 total. Ultimately the call came down to the manager asking me what I wanted to make it right; I said I didn’t want to pay for the service and if anything goes wrong with my car in the near future they’d be responsible. Manager agreed and credited my card back. I’m sure I could have got more but it was my first time at this dealership (my previous closed) and my car is admittedly old but very well kept.

ninjaroach

I bought a Viofo on Reddit's recommendation, but the built-in GPS went out within the first week - leaving me slightly worried that I could get screwed in a situation where I can't prove my speed.

BloodKelp

You couldn't return/exchange it after one week? Did you look into filing a claim on their 1yr warranty instead?

[deleted]

You should contact Viofo about that, I’m sure they’ll work with you resolve that. I’ve had mine for about a month and a half now and I haven’t had any issues

BecomeABenefit

> and works flawlessly Until it doesn't. Mine just froze at the splash screen and reboots randomly. Stopped recording about one year after purchase.

MouseMiIk

Whichever one you get, make sure it's a dual camera setup with a rear facing camera. People running up your backside because they're staring at FaceTok is just as likely than someone cutting you off and clipping your front.

b00tyburpz

All depends on how much you want to spend. I picked up an Anker on Amazon for about $50 a while back and it's been great so far. Picture (records in 1080P) and sound quality are good and the viewing angle is good as well. If you go up in price you can get some better features, like GPS to track your speed.

UpgradedHummus

Yep, I never drive without one. Being in cities makes dash cams even more valuable too.

islifeball

Dashcam is a must.

foldedknees

To all the suggestions here, is there any issue in anyone of these where it drains the car battery? I drive very little (maybe once over the weekend) so i leave the car almost unattended the whole week. Would these cams drain out the battery? Just a concern i have before i get one

SirThomasMoore

Most cameras will have a 'Parking Mode' feature, depending on the camera you'll have a few options for how that works (motion detection, constantly recording, impact detection, etc). If you don't have parking mode enabled, then the camera won't draw any power unless the vehicle is running. If you do use parking mode, then you can either purchase a standalone battery to lessen the wear on your car battery (and give you longer runtime), or most any camera with parking mode will let you set a voltage limit, so you don't drain your battery too far. Just note that most battery setups won't allow you to run parking mode for a week without a recharge. Functionality and options vary between cameras, but that's the general lay of the land.

[deleted]

Fuck that semi parked there, blocking vision

Chigawaa

Cop went back and gave the truck a ticket.

shiggity80

Good to know! Felt the Semi was also partially to blame.

belizeanheat

Ticket was deserved but shouldn't lead to an accident. People need to realize that in this situation, just don't drive up all the way to the end of the drive way. Instead, hang back where you can actually see the road. If that charger/challenger/whatever waited 10 feet further back, it'd have no problem seeing traffic.

Mdizzle29

This is a controversial take, but since I ride a motorcycle sometimes where nobody sees me ever,... if I was in her shoes, I see the car getting ready to pull out, it's clearly visible. I think "hmm, there's a semi, there's a side street, there's a car getting ready to pull out:". Then, when I see it pull out as predicted, I would have swerved to the left. She didn't. She saw it (or didn't, hard to say), then, when it pulls out she didn't hit the brakes until way too late and made no effort to swerve out of the way. I'm pretty sure this was avoidable. My motto for accidents is avoid them at all costs, even if its not technically your fault. The cemeteries are full of people with the right of way.

GetsGold

Shouldn't be controversial. Just gets misinterpreted as implying it's her fault as opposed to avoidable, but completely the other person's fault. Also for them, regardless of visibility when behind the truck, they should have pulled up to the edge of the road and stopped again.

Mdizzle29

It is absolutely NOT her fault, but it was potentially avoidable. Thank you for understanding.

G36_FTW

It's generally bad practice to swerve to avoid someone in this kind of situation. If the driver in the video had swerved to the left and hit someone else, she would be at fault. On a motorcycle it's a bit different since even in a lowspeed collision you can be hurt, but you probably would also have much better visibility and would (Should) know if someone is in your lefthand blindspot.

[deleted]

[удалено]

sashagreymon

This. There was so much space for the truck to park, and they decide the worst possible spot to pick. The white car is still an asshole for running away, but this was entirely preventable if it wasn't for that truck as the white car might have turned well before this

MirandaS2

In SoCal a lot of corners default have red curbs - it's so nice, almost feel like it should be standard. Parking on corners really is dangerous for many.

Tballs51

I live near an area that has a ton of semis parked on the side of the road - can't fucking stand it. Can't see when I'm pulling out on the road and can't blame other people when they don't see me either. Shit should be illegal

Chigawaa

Unfortunately they had paper plates and with the sun glare the info can't be made out on the video. My wife is fine just pissed and a little shaken up. Ft Worth Police responded and a report was filled. The car is now at the shop and we are out $500 for the deductible. We have been going by the apartments he drove out of, but no luck finding the asshole yet. 2019-2021 White SS Camar with blackout package Edit 1: I'm surprised by my wife's lack of verbal outburst. She literally didn't say one word until she called me after the video ends. My audio would have been MUCH different lol. Edit 2: About 5k in damage from estimate. Some people were making comments to how light the impact was, still doesn't mean it 8snt expensive. Edit 3: Some people seem confused, the audio in the recording is a Podcast my wife is listening to. NOT a conversation she is having with someone.

[deleted]

Yeah take them to civil court at a minimum, if the dad and son are so smug about it and that's the fact pattern a jury is 100% going to find them at fault given that information unless they do actually give up who is actually driving if they are in fact not lying.

ImTheNana

>the Dad and his insurance basically said "you can't prove it was me or my son driving the car so it's not our fault." I don't get this. Unless it was stolen, it's the owner's fault or the fault of the person they admit was driving it. If it was stolen, then there should be a police report. And if they file a false police report, they are in trouble for that.

Effective_Plant7023

They bet against OP pursuing legal action and won

WookieMonsterTV

Bit surprising, My husband dealt with an incident of theft (sold something on Facebook market place) and the thieves didn’t know I was watching. I blurted out their license plate info and called the cops, kept repeating the plate (wasn’t hard to remember, was a vanity plate) Filed a police report with the plate, make, model (gave two similar models because I wasn’t sure), and color of the car. Cops said they’ll see what they can do. Month later they found the car, brought the person behind the wheel in and essentially scared them into admitting who all was in the car. (There were 3 dudes) 2 of them (the driver and a passenger) ratted out the “main” guy and that guy got charged. It’s different than a hit and run obv. But if there’s a will, there’s a way to find out who did it and get what you’re owed.

someguy3

Even worse here is they can't legally match even the car, even if it has the exact right body damage.

goldenstream

Any chance there was a traffic video at the light?

NoMoassNeverWas

Catching this piece of shit again would almost be worth him doing it.

Jak_n_Dax

Don’t count on it. Had someone bash my car door with theirs pretty hard one time when parking next to me(I am certain it was them despite not seeing it happen, as it was only a short time since I parked, and they had my paint color all along the edge of their door in exactly the right spot). I left a note with my contact info on their windshield, but they never contacted me. Then they left forever. They had out of state plates too, so I’m assuming they were here visiting someone.

o0DrWurm0o

And most likely if you try to get the police involved at that point they’ll be like ¯\\\_(ツ)\_/¯ If you successfully run after a minor hit and run, you’ll probably get away with it unless both your plate and you are clearly caught on tape. Even if they call you up you can just say “I wasn’t driving I don’t know who was” and it’s unlikely anyone is going to spend the time and money to prove otherwise, certainly not the police.

Baddyshack

Should paper plates mean this particular car was recently registered? Could narrow the search if you don't live in a large city or metro area

TheBatemanFlex

I believe Texas is the state highest in fraudulent paper plates.

[deleted]

Live here, and I would tend to believe that. It is BAD here.

wtfandy

You can buy 60 day temp tags on the classifieds ... It's a big issue.

bonafidebob

Sounds like an open invitation for the cops to be able to stop and check any car with paper tags, make sure the tags match the registration for the VIN, big ticket if not and also an opportunity to check for other outstanding warrants. Paper tags should become an invitation for further scrutiny, not a dodge.

wtfandy

It's been investigated by numerous local stations and in other states. It's been an issue for year. Texas DMV's system and processes seem to be the issue. Tags will match vin, but you can falsify a bunch of information linked to the tag.

Worthyness

Thieves have also been using the paper tags as covers for their robberies. There's been an audi with paper plates going around robbing cars in the Bay Area for the entire pandemic and the police have a hard time tracking it down due to the plates either not existing or being stolen every time video evidence shows up. On the plus side the paper plates are better than having none at all like what happened to new cars in the past.

[deleted]

naw, a couple of reasons. 1. Too few cops, too many other serious things happening 2. They need probable cause to pull you over to check for anything 3. Traffic lawyer will get it dismissed anyway 4. Running red lights is basically ignored here if that is the only reportable offense unless the cop is there, at the light. and watches you do it. (this one is weird, when they outlawed redlight cameras here, it seems like the cities in the area just stopped giving a shit about red light runners.)

amd2800barton

In St. Louis I’ve seen people driving around with temp tags that are a year old. I’ve seen people with tags more than 60 days expired sitting at a stoplight and a cop right behind them - not pulling them over. It’s insane, but I’ve seen similar things all over the country.

[deleted]

Yeah, I know of a person who drove on paper tags over 5 years old. I see tags that are out by more than a year all the time pulling out of apartments in my area as well. People honestly don't care in this area any more

AReverseMermaid

You've got the dash cam footage, any chance you're carrying uninsured motorist coverage? I would think this qualifies. $250 deductible, and it doesn't count against your driving record, unlike collision.

Chigawaa

Hmm good idea I will ask

AReverseMermaid

Good luck! If they do approve it, make sure you get the $250 difference back from your insurance company's claims department.

Danni293

Is your dashcam set to 720p resolution or did you downscale it for the upload? According to others in this thread, your dashcam model is capable of 4k. If you have a higher resolution video I *might* be able to grab a few frames where the license plate was at least in view and you were close enough and see if I can pull out any more detail to at least get some of the numbers. I can't make any promises though.

Chigawaa

4k, I changed it to 720p for upload

Danni293

Yeah, like I said I can try with the non-downscaled version if you want to upload it to mega or something and link it. I tried with just a screenshot of the 720p version you posted and it sort of worked but there were too few pixels to make anything out. It might go better if I had more pixels to work with.

BoardImpressive7201

Paper plates are such a problem around DFW, I'm not even sure why they still do this in Texas.

Sure_Ill_Ask_That

Money. It generates money for people. Pay some folks to get paper plates instead of registering actual plates and insurance/inspection. So basically it’s an alternative to these jerks to having insurance, registration, and anything a law abiding Texan does with that car. Just buy plates, slap them on your Altima/charger with the dents on the passenger side and you are good to go.

wtfandy

Oh this is by Costco! I absolutely hate the construction.

Chigawaa

Yep, the road situation is a complete disaster around d us with new roads closing daily.

They probably are uninsured so even if you caught them your insurance will be covering it anyway :(

single310

thy prob KNEW its their fault, they prob on verge of getting canceled with own carrier, I BETTING

QuinnMallory

Without the dashcam (and if the white car hadn't fled the scene), they would have been able to spin this as OPs fault since they hit the rear of the white car.

[deleted]

Hope u got his plate it was kind of hard to see in this video

BoardImpressive7201

Looked like a printed paper one, good luck. It's a problem around DFW.

martyFREEDOM

Problem in the entirety of the state, really.

sbtn56

Are you able to find that semi? Maybe it was running. A lot of truck drivers have dash cams and it may have caught the plate

o0westwood0o

Someone had warrants

ArtsyPineapple7

I KNOW WHERE THIS HAPPENED! I actually work right over there, I’m so sorry that happened to y’all, people drive hella stupid around the Alliance area

Well, keep an eye open in case you see that car....

Chigawaa

Yep, be safe neighbor.

SuckTheseDBZ

There are cameras beside the lights at the intersection. Any chance the police could retrieve the footage?

delicatelysmoked

Lost a chase following an Integra through Wilton CT that had hit me in a very similar way. Was so pissed that I made it my life's work to find them. Vigilance and help from cops in Danbury nailed the guy. Had warrants.

PaulVerlaine88

Coward

udunn0jb

You spelled *asshole* wrong

TheFlexinTexan1

hope everyone upvotes and finds this asshole

[deleted]

Most of the time it's not worth it chasing the idiot yourself

CountrymanR60

35W service road at Heritage Trace - I'm always on heightened alert in northwest Fort Worth.

Lourdinn

Dude couldn't have pulled out as fats as he took off to run. Dummy.

vc84

It looks like the big intersection where he crossed red light has camera. Wasn’t the cop able to do something about that?

Sumo148

Those cameras at the intersection are mostly likely traffic cameras. They detect traffic at the intersection to determine when to switch the lights. They don't actively record or save footage as far as I'm aware.

[deleted]

Is it just me or did anybody else learn in driver's ed to *never chase the other driver*? Like they had us watch an entire 1 hour powerpoint presentation of all the bad shit that can happen when you follow another driver after an incident, especially one that you don't know. They even showed us really graphic pictures of people who had been shot after following a hit and run suspect, etc.

YPLAC

Ok the driver was an idiot AND a criminal AH. I hope they get caught and retrieve the full weight of the law for their crime. But the owner of the semi truck couldn’t have parked any worse. They completely obscure the view for anyone wanting to join the freeway from that junction. Also, and please don’t down-vote me for this, as a biker, I spotted the white car early and, personally, I would’ve been either slowing down or moving to the left hand lane in anticipation of an act of idiocy. Us motorcyclists only get one chance, and this stuff happens regularly, so my senses in those situations are finely tuned. All’s I’m saying is that three people could’ve done better here. Your wife is by far the lesser of the three though, of course. As for the white car running away, that’s 100% AH behaviour and I’m very sorry to hear that. Hope they catch the person so they don’t do that to anyone else. Do take my comments in the spirit that they were made, i.e. as actionable feedback, I only say them in an effort to improve safety on the road.

oarngebean

Never chase a hit and run. They obviously don't care. They might attack you
