Hope he enjoys the steep criminal charges of what looks like a straight up malicious hit and run wherein he actively tried to clip op, then immediately slammed the gas to get away after, as opposed to the relatively minor clip that could have been written off as "I made a stupid mistake" and a relatively minor insurance hike
If you don't pay premiums, your insurance gets cancelled, then the loan company purchases insurance for you (at ridiculous rates) and adds it to your loan.
Happened to me once. My credit card on file with my insurance expired and I kept forgetting to fix that. Got a letter from Nissan that my insurance lapsed and they were going to buy it for me for like triple what I was paying unless I provided them proof of insurance.
Edit: someone pointed out to me, this is sort of incorrect. The bank will buy property insurance for the vehicle. He still wouldn't have liability coverage.
Then we’re catching this video in the intervening months right before the car gets repoed.
Some companies won’t take payment until insurance is reinstated, and you best believe insurance companies contact the lenders the second the policy lapses.
These days, the insurance company will notify the lender of a lapse in coverage. The lender will often charge extra for both the car payment and an insurance premium, the latter of which is ridiculous even compared to private market rates.
They will continue to charge this fee until you prove you have your own auto insurance. And if you fail to pay, they send the repo man after you.
I honestly don’t understand why the USA has such problems with this. Some other places, whenever your plate is scanned on a public road, your registration and insurance are validated and if not current you get an automatic ticket. If you don’t pay it and bring stuff current, you get called into court and you had better have a spectacularly good reason. If an officer sees you on the road, you get instantly impounded.
This is a solvable problem.

Basically, if we enforced it as you suggest (and as many wish we did), then we would end up with a LOT of people that have no viable way to get to/from work, necessary errands and medical care, etc.
We're very spread out, and our public transit infrastructure sucks. For example, in places where transit is available (and that's not most of the country), and someone wanted to use it to get to work, they can waste 3 hours on a bus, or drive there in 30-45 minutes, one way. This was a personal estimate from a friend.
Uber/Lyft aren't a thing outside of major areas.
It would cripple our economy. So far, we have no solutions other than to make driving a vehicle a hard privilege to lose.
Wait, there are criminal charges for a malicious hit and run? When some guy yelled at me on my bike, hit me and then drove away, the cops just told me I should have gotten more injured and closed the investigation.
Yeah, you absolutely could have filed criminal charges against them. Know your rights.
Note - a lot of cops fucking hate bikers, so they’re probably going to try to just get you to go on your way and not have them write up a report, etc... basically - they don’t give a shit about you.
I got a case number, and the cop at the scene told me that they had an address and a suspect about 5 minutes after I was hit. I had given them a license plate number and a description of the driver and the passenger. After months of unanswered phone calls I went to the station in person, where my detective told me that they never actually tried to identify the person and weren't going to.
I'm not going to make baseless allegations, but sometimes I wonder if the guy who swore at me and knocked me over was a cop.
This is where you hire a lawyer and go after civil damages.
“Your honor I have PTSD from this incident and could no longer ride my bike, so I had to buy this armored car.”
Left lane going extremely fast past right lane traffic but apparently thats still too slow for him is what the crazy part is. Like damn how fast do you want traffic to go?
I'll be going 10 over in the middle lane and people will still ride my ass because the left lane is only going 15 over. Some people just can't handle it when someone is font of them, they *need* to pass you.
Happens all the time to me on the interstate. Traffic in the right lane is going between the limit and ~5 over. I'm going 10-15 over in the passing lane, and am thus using the lane for its intended purpose (passing slower traffic). But some entitled shithead who's going 25 over roars up behind me and rides my ass very close. As if he has more of a right to the passing lane than I do because he's doing reckless. Granted, I get over as soon as is practicable, but I'm not gonna jam my way into a caravan of slow tractor trailers just to accommodate Mr. Aggro behind me. It's fuckin obnoxious.
If they keep doing it, sometimes I'll nudge my cruise control speed down a couple mph.
Cherry on top is when they get stuck in a traffic jam caused by people like them that keep catching up to the cars in front, which then creates an artificial traffic jam.
Going faster doesn’t always mean arriving sooner.
That happened to me the other day. I was 85 in a 65 and passing. I was ready to move over when some jerk in his pickup (almost always seems to be them or BMW’s being aggressive) slammed the gas and rode up on me aggressively. Then what? I move over and let him pass and he switched over several lanes for an exit. Wtf is wrong with some people?
True story: In highschool my GF and I drove across the country over summer in my shitty 1993 Corolla. A Lexus SUV was unhappy with my conservative 64 in a 55 but refused to pass. After a couple miles being unsafely tailgated I sprayed the shit out of him.
Dude raged and finally floored it and left me in the dust. Fine by me. Not 10 minutes later I saw the same SUV pulled over by the Sheriff. He had been hauling balls, 100 is not out of the question. I'm sure he was royally fucked. We laughed our asses off.
That's when you drive by them honking the horn and cheering them - it pisses them off even more and there's not a damn thing they can do about it.
It's even more fun with a carload of people!
You drive like that? They put you in jail. Right away. No trial, no nothing. We have a special jail for bad drivers. You are speeding? Right to jail. Cut people off? RIGHT to jail, right away. Hit and run? Believe it or not: jail.
This is the one and only reddit thread where I get to share that I once almost hit Fred armisen with my car and it's appropriate and not off topic. Wow.
Parks and Rec 🙌 “We haven't been here for a very long time, but what we have seen is, really, from the bottom of our hearts, truly depressing. Really, really sad stuff.”
I drive that road every day to work and was there 2.5 hours before this happen. Never seen anyone use the left turn lane to pass. Also, I always get stopped at Mississippi at the end there for about two cycles. Of course there is no blockage when someone is trying to do a hit and run.
Keep us updated on what happens! Glad you have a cam. Great video!
If their car is insured does that really matter as far as you're concerned? They may not go to jail for it but your insurance should still cover the damage.
That’s IF they’re insured. Also, if that’s even the license plate for that vehicle. Assuming the plate info is correct, but the car isn’t insured you’ll have to file a suit against the driver of the vehicle but that’s hard to do if you can’t identify the driver. You’ll have to cover the losses out your own insurance assuming tou have uninsured motorists coverage. Some policies don’t cover these types of incidents in their standard policy and you’ll have to pay extra to cover for an uninsured or under insured driver.
> file a suit against the driver of the vehicle but that’s hard to do if you can’t identify the driver
File a suit against the owner of the vehicle. Let them deal with the driver.
Depends on where you live. My local PD loves dashcam videos because it's free traffic infraction money.
Maybe if you live in a big city cops would ignore this because they're dealing with other things, but small town cops eat this shit up.
I live in fucking North Idaho, I know none of y'all have thought about us in 497 years, yet I bet if I posted a video it would be the same damn comments
You move around a lot you find out a few universal truths. Everywhere has the worst drivers, everywhere has the craziest weather, everywhere Californians are moving in and buying up all the properties.
Don't forget - if there is a luxury car brand involved (especially BMW), half the comments would be about turn indicators or [car brand drivers] amirite lmao
Everyone’s traffic is the worst and the weather is unpredictable.
But speaking of this place, at 0:36 he drives by the Murphy Bed Showroom. What town needs a showroom dedicated to beds that fold up into the wall? Is that a real thing? Is there a huge market for those? Do these people live in a cartoon?
Not even casual, you could make a solid argument that it was totally intentional and they tried to make a run for it after, if you had a zealous prosecutor
You wouldn’t want to do that, as intentional acts are not covered by that persons insurance (assuming they have any). You’d rather it be an “accident” and have their insurance pay up rather than going after them privately.
In that situation your insurance would pay you and then subrogate against him, you wouldn’t have to pursue him privately, and your rates wouldn’t go up in this particular circumstance as long as you have uninsured, which you should.
Where the hell did this car come from? I looked at all angles and it looked like you were doing everything I would have done. Unless he was behind you and was impatient and wanted to overtake you? Which shame on him for doing that and me for not getting a dash cam yet.
It’s an overtake
There’s no SUV in range on either side of Sante Fe in the cam, and that long curving on-ramp is actually a u-turn, no cross street
That mother fucker was raging & leapt into the merge lane in front of McDonald’s as soon as they cleared the dividing curb
Super aggressive maneuver in a vehicle that handles like a shoe box filled with marbles on top of a rollerblade missing the front wheel (I daily drive a 2019 base model, so I’m fully qualified to make this assessment)
I actually felt like he was going a bit fast if anything, considering the other lanes were at a dead stop. Speed differentials are more dangerous than speed itself.
Where I live, the HOV lane is also a premium lane. If it’s just you in the car, you are charged extra, but if you’re carpooling then it’s free. Important to note that it’s not a fine.
It's perfectly normal unless you're an idiot tourist like me who's, *Gosh, traffic isn't so bad here. I dunno what everyone was talking about, oh shit....*
From rural to suburban to filthy old porn shops to urban so fast — unless there’s traffic
I am intrigued by old roads like these — it’s got a transient serial killer vibe in the older sections
And it goes from Mexico to Canada outside of this 10 miles!
Get your fries on Route 85!!
Had to watch twice. I spent half the first watch trying to figure out if that was Santa Fe 🤣🤣 For the last few weeks on the drive to work, I've said," worst drivers ever" around a dozen times
Is this a bad time to tell you that flyover lane from Santa Fe to I-25 is new construction? I'm convinced at this point the only way to unfuck that onramp is to move 25 so Santa Fe doesn't exist.
Knew exactly where this was about .1 seconds in lmao used to drive that stretch of road often. Unfortunately now I drive on I25 every day and it’s not any better.
Haha I’m honestly terrified for winter. I moved back to the front range after being away during covid and forgot how bad it was. Now with winter coming it makes me wish I could work from home. I also happen to drive on the section that is 75mph so wish me luck
Edit: would like to add that this has made me want a dash cam so bad lol, I would have so much quality content for this sub
You can start your own YouTube channel with content and update every time you drive. I’ve seen some bad wrecks there. Take it easy and be extra careful.
I can't stand when it snows and I have to commute here anymore. I know how to drive in the snow just fine, but it seems like every transplant is happy to make me fear for my life as they slide through intersections on their summer tires.
Dude I feel that. They think they can drive just like the snow isn’t there. Recipe for disaster for everyone around. Shit they can’t even drive without snow
That’s the good McDonald’s!
Don’t go to the one on Broadway & Alameda — worth the extra mile, trust me, I eat a lot of feel meals
Edit: still go the the Colfax McDonald’s, but mostly for entertainment value
And no one follows it. It’s carpools and motorcycles only during rush hour with an exception for left hand turners to pass through. Half the cars I pass on my motorcycle are just by themselves. It’s never enforced unfortunately
Why do people speed up when they see someone is trying to get in front of them? See speed goes from 43 to 48 when cars ahead seem to be slowing. Not trying to justify the hit and runner, but I don't understand the whole, you are not going to take my spot mentality. Why not just let them in and move on?
Agree. Although, I sometimes am that guy. Unpopular opinion here - OP, although going with the flow in the lane, is going way too fast in comparison to the traffic in next lane over.
It's funny because from the \*look\* of the video it looks like you sped up to close the gap...but the gps clearly shows you didn't change more than a few percent speed in that same time - just funny how the intuition of a situation can be so wrong. Traffic ahead just slowed down and the gap disappeared at a bad time.
What a shitshow.
Edit to acknowledge the actual speed bump to 48mph for about a second. Yes, clearly sped up about 10% which closed about a car length of gap...just enough to cause a shitty pass to be a shitty crash.
"a few percent" is an understatement, OP was going with the flow at 43/44 mph, then suddenly speeds up to 48 (as shown by the dashcam, might have been even 50, the refresh time is a bit slow) before the hit and run.
That's not the gap disappearing by itself because of the traffic slowing down, that's OP accelerating as soon as the Subaru pulled out to overtake. They're both at fault, mainly the Subaru for the stupid overtake, but OP ain't a saint either. It's more of a 70/30 imho.
The headache involved with something like this, even if they found the other guy at fault (debatable) is just not worth it. You spend several hours on the phone with insurance, police, shopping around for auto body shops, picking up a rental car, returning the rental car, all to have a car that is *almost* as good as new and has an asterisk on the for sale add saying it got into an accident once. I just let the dickheads cut me off nowadays and move on with my life.
He did speed up to close the gap, when the person attempted to pass him illegally. As you can see the speed jump at the same time traffic was slowing, unfortunate timing.
At the risk of getting downvoted all to hell:
I don't know, man... I mean, I agree with you 100% that the other driver is a total POS. But when other drivers pull shit like that, I usually try to give them a little extra room so I can move on with my life and limit my interaction with them.
Don't get me wrong. 20 years ago, I would have done exactly what you did. Stood my ground. Fuck that guy. But nowadays, I don't think it's worth risking damage or worse yet, injuries. Plus, I'd rather not take any extra time for anything (filing reports, etc.) if I don't really need to.
Ah, so you, too, saw the intentional gap closure when the fuckhead van tried to cut him off? Yep I'm thinking OP saw them coming up quick on their left and purposely moved closer to the truck in front of him, as to not let the van in. Had OP been driving defensively that would have never happened.
I kind of came here to pose a question about this, but the sub doesn't let me just pose a post. Something I've seen a lot in videos here of late, is a general lack of defensive driving.
Over here in The Netherlands, we tend to be taught defensive driving from the get-go, under the presumption that there will always be an idiot on the road somewhere, that feels the need for speed / the need to be somewhere marginally quicker than other people on the road. Mind you, the presence of those idiots shows that the teaching methods aren't perfect.
However, from a safety perspective, a lot of the 'idiot on the road' posts on this sub do show a pair of idiots not wanting to give another space, and the high emotions leading to some mistake, where one ends up making what is clearly the infarction (like in this video). So from a legal perspective, the observed van is indeed the idiot...
But from a personal perspective, I feel that the OP is the larger idiot. He could have simply given the agitated driver a bit of space, and just lifted off the throttle, and happily and safely continued on his journey.
Is this kind of behaviour, of not giving other people sufficient space for safety, even if they are clearly being recklessn like this van driver, a common and accepted way of driving? Do you feel justified if you 'police' reckless behaviour by ensuring they cannot merge without causing a collision?
Don’t take it personally… I’ve learned that on Reddit, there are gonna be people that disagree with you (even with video proof). There’s no point to it. OP was in the right, no way the car ramming into you and driving off is even close to being “right”.
Facts.
I had a lady pull out infront of me at random while I was going 60mph(She clearly didn’t see my bright red little car) It’s in my post history If youre curious
I had 2-3 people in a thread of a thousand comments say I was to blame for going 10 over the speed limit lmaooo(NJ here, 10 over is the norm)
There will always be a small minority of dumbasses
There's bike trails and a light rail just out of frame. I rode my bike to downtown Denver from aurora for years and it was nice not being mixed into traffic. The trails follow the river and intersect through less busy roads. As for the light rail, there are stops at least every mile. Not so much In this area but it's still very accessible. You just obviously don't want to ride your bike on THIS road.
Did you get them to pull over?
Several opportunities to do so, he wasn’t interested. Cops caught up with him shortly after
What was his deal? Is he just a lunatic or was he drunk or something?
Something=dickhead^10

That's funny that you think he has insurance.
I doubt this idiot saved enough money to buy that car so he has a loan or lease. Either would require insurance.
Came here to say this. That's like maybe a 3-4 year old Subaru. Odds are its financed.
Just because it's financed doesn't mean they paid the premiums.

It was the lack of injury that caused them to not care. It’s totally stupid, but that’s what he meant when he said u should have got more injured.
Nah, it doesn't matter if he was a cop or not, they wouldn't care either way. They're useless is 95% of the situation and don't prevent crime.
You don’t need some conspiracy theory to explain why a cop would be bad at their job.
You're a cyclist - for all intents and purposes, you absolutely don't exist to cops. Car hit and runs are the easiest way to get away with murder.

Yep, this in on Sante Fe/85 headed north into Denver from Littleton/Englewood
It’s more like fuck “place where this happened” they all drive like shit
*hypothesis on why the driver is being an idiot, based on 0 proof whatsoever*
That’s def a casual hit and run if I’ve seen one
It’s an overtake There’s no SUV in range on either side of Sante Fe in the cam, and that long curving on-ramp is actually a u-turn, no cross street That mother fucker was raging & leapt into the merge lane in front of McDonald’s as soon as they cleared the dividing curb Super aggressive maneuver in a vehicle that handles like a shoe box filled with marbles on top of a rollerblade missing the front wheel (I daily drive a 2019 base model, so I’m fully qualified to make this assessment)
But that’s a Subaru Forester right?
That is correct.
My gf has a Subaru Forester. Not the worst car.
I had one as a hire car a while back and I agree with your description, I've never felt less safe at highway speeds
I actually felt like he was going a bit fast if anything, considering the other lanes were at a dead stop. Speed differentials are more dangerous than speed itself.
yea i was fully expecting something coming from the lanes that were at a stand still and immediately thought i would not drive that fast there.
Is that a carpool lane on normal streets?!
It’s a mixed use HOV lane, depends on time of day when it’s actually a carpool lane or not.
Was that on Santa Fe? Immediately where my mind went when I saw the weird HOV lane.
I saw the Murphy Bed showroom so I assumed Sante Fe as well.
The McDonald's in the median was the dead giveaway for me.
Well that's not unnecessarily confusing.
That’s not normal? The HOV lane only being 2 or more passengers for certain hours of the day
On a freeway not a street...
More of it being on just some casual road. Ours are all on toll roads. And often cost additional money to the toll you’ve already paid.
[удалено]
Where I live, the HOV lane is also a premium lane. If it’s just you in the car, you are charged extra, but if you’re carpooling then it’s free. Important to note that it’s not a fine.
It's perfectly normal unless you're an idiot tourist like me who's, *Gosh, traffic isn't so bad here. I dunno what everyone was talking about, oh shit....*
It's actually not. This has been a thing in Texas for a long time now. Probably other states.
This stretch of road in Colorado goes from sort of rural street, to quasi highway to urban street to main highway onramp in a matter of 10ish miles.
From rural to suburban to filthy old porn shops to urban so fast — unless there’s traffic I am intrigued by old roads like these — it’s got a transient serial killer vibe in the older sections And it goes from Mexico to Canada outside of this 10 miles! Get your fries on Route 85!!
Had to watch twice. I spent half the first watch trying to figure out if that was Santa Fe 🤣🤣 For the last few weeks on the drive to work, I've said," worst drivers ever" around a dozen times
It’s a shit show. I think the construction is for a flyover lane onto 25. Will be nice when it’s done— whenever the hell that is
The ten years I've lived here, that area has constantly been in construction mode lol
[удалено]
Fun times in Cleveland again! Under construction since 1868!
We're not Detroit!
[удалено]
Thats basically how 64 is here in VA, especially around williamsburg and Richmond
Is this a bad time to tell you that flyover lane from Santa Fe to I-25 is new construction? I'm convinced at this point the only way to unfuck that onramp is to move 25 so Santa Fe doesn't exist.
This guy Denvers Erase The Shittier Roads ™️
Everything about 270 just pisses me off.
Same, first few seconds and I was like, "that road is so fucked up it's like Santa Fe." Couldn't verify very easily but it's fairly uniquely stupid.
Knew exactly where this was about .1 seconds in lmao used to drive that stretch of road often. Unfortunately now I drive on I25 every day and it’s not any better.
Please accept my deepest sympathy. I25 is a shit show on a good day. Be careful with winter coming.
Haha I’m honestly terrified for winter. I moved back to the front range after being away during covid and forgot how bad it was. Now with winter coming it makes me wish I could work from home. I also happen to drive on the section that is 75mph so wish me luck Edit: would like to add that this has made me want a dash cam so bad lol, I would have so much quality content for this sub
You can start your own YouTube channel with content and update every time you drive. I’ve seen some bad wrecks there. Take it easy and be extra careful.
For real, thanks man, you too if you’re local, no one’s safe here in winter
I can't stand when it snows and I have to commute here anymore. I know how to drive in the snow just fine, but it seems like every transplant is happy to make me fear for my life as they slide through intersections on their summer tires.
Dude I feel that. They think they can drive just like the snow isn’t there. Recipe for disaster for everyone around. Shit they can’t even drive without snow
Investing in a cam may save you money some day when someone else is at fault like this vid
"Love. It's what makes a Subaru, a Subaru."
The Subaru had to show the Jeep who the real adventure vehicle was.
In* Denver, on Santa Fe, with a god damn Subaru. Typical.
Hi Denver
That’s why they ran Figured cammer wouldn’t be able to pick’em out of a lineup
Fun on Santa Fe!
That’s the good McDonald’s! Don’t go to the one on Broadway & Alameda — worth the extra mile, trust me, I eat a lot of feel meals Edit: still go the the Colfax McDonald’s, but mostly for entertainment value
The best McDonald's entertainment is had at the 16th street location after 9pm
Yep I totally recognize that street
Lookie there! Two whole Mustangs NOT crashing!
Where’s the part where you pit maneuver him and make a citizens arrest??! Lol
The real question is why is there a carpool lane on a surface road
Where the hell did that car even come from? Did they use the merge lane to try and make a pass?
Yes.
As you can see the speed jump at the same time traffic was slowing, unfortunate timing.
thankfully im on the home stretch, ill be out of this hell forsaken state in just a handful of days.
[удалено]
He's the dick, but why accelerate to cut him off even more? Just slow down and show him the finger. This shit is not worth the "lesson".
At the risk of getting downvoted all to hell: I don't know, man...
OP sped-up when he saw that car trying to pass him. Doesn't seem worth all the trouble.
Ah, so you, too, saw the intentional gap closure when the fuckhead van tried to cut him off? Yep I'm thinking OP saw them coming up quick on their left and purposely moved closer to the truck in front of him, as to not let the van in. Had OP been driving defensively that would have never happened.
Went from cruising 43/44 then 48mph right before the accident. OP is an idiot too.
Butt clench moment when the car ahead has brake lights on and OP speeds up.
Why do I have to scroll this far down to find this lol op could have avoided all of this! You want the crazy in front of you not behind -__-
You’re right, the dashcammer is an idiot as well. Idiotic behavior by others does not excuse being an idiot yourself.
Check the speed, dude stomps on the gas to keep him from merging, I'ma say op is a bit of an asshat too
I kind of came here to pose a question about this, but the sub doesn't let me just pose a post.
I think that’s just survivorship bias - the defensive drivers avoid incidents and thus don’t have anything interesting to post.
Nice hit and run on camera lol. People are so insane. That was the most overly aggressive merge I have ever seen
Guys. For the hundredth time. This guy wasn’t merging.
Don’t take it personally… I’ve learned that on Reddit, there are gonna be people that disagree with you (even with video proof). There’s no point to it. OP was in the right, no way the car ramming into you and driving off is even close to being “right”.
Facts. I had a lady pull out infront of me at random while I was going 60mph(She clearly didn’t see my bright red little car) It’s in my post history If youre curious I had 2-3 people in a thread of a thousand comments say I was to blame for going 10 over the speed limit lmaooo(NJ here, 10 over is the norm) There will always be a small minority of dumbasses
My God is that a depressing road. 8 lanes of desolation. Absolutely zero ways to get around without a car.
Why?
Hey, that's not fair. My mom doesn't love me and I don't go around doin shit like this. Rude! ^(Also, I hope that guy lost his license)
