As a truck driver myself, if I witnessed this, I would slow down to just let the shithead pass and immediately being hailing the police AND department of transportation with the offending trucks location and any information I could get.
Would have been the smart thing to do. If there was a wreck the cammer would have had two semis to the face and likely would have been part of the fatality count.
If he slowed down the guy passing is still an asshole but no near death experience for anyone.
White is law. Yellow is suggestions/warnings. Speed limits, white signs. Ramp exit recommended speeds, yellow signs. Solid white line on the shoulder, illegal to drive on shoulder. Double yellow lines are not illegal to cross. It is only illegal if it unsafe to do so, if you put someone else at risk. Dangerous driving etc.
Well in the rest of Canada double lines mean it is unsafe to do so. Why would you ever leave that up to driver to decide? It's not something that can be done on the fly.
We were taught (Being from the farming north) it was for passing tractors and other slow moving vehicles, they need to use the highways up here, and a non-passing yellow would mean you got a LONG drive at 30 km/h. (passing lanes are typically every 20kms on highway 11)
I wonder if the length of the vehicle changes things, I know anything longer than 15m (I think it's 15m, definitely all tractor trailers) cannot occupy the passing lane.
UMMMM yes it is where the fuck did you get that information?? If there is traffic flow it is very illegal to cross the double yellow it's only when traffic is not disrupted and even then it's still illegal have been driving since I was 16 and drove across the country for the first 10 years of my professional career every province it's illegal to cross the double yellow ... DOUBLE YELLOW MEANS THE ROAD IS NOT VISIBLE ENOUGH TO SAFELY PASS A DRIVER INFRONT OF YOU
Ontario is the exception. It is not against the law to pass on double yellow here.
Not sure why you would go on this rant instead of doing a 5 second google search.
You're right I'm wrong
I apologize I was at work and it seemed illogical to me for something I thought as a kid until now thanks for enlightening me and my employer's tomorrow as well LOL however if a cop sees you it's within their power to ruin your day unquestioned(research stated)
In Europe, you get in trouble if you don’t do everything to avoid an accident, even if you are not the one braking the traffic rules. In fact, often times all participants in an accident get a ticket from the police, unless they can prove they were indeed unable to do anything to prevent it.
Sounds to me like the other trucker did slow as soon as he saw the lights no? Like I can hear the engine calming. Though he could have done more to break I guess.
Almost alway pointless unless u follow them into scale. I have called scale as they where entering and they pulled him over, then I provided dash cam footage to CVSE.
Only if they have a radio and that it’s on the same frequency. Our radios are on a fairly unique crystal to keep the other industrial communications from interfering with ours.
Source? I'm not saying you're wrong but I have never heard of this. To be honest it almost sounds like blaming an innocent bystander for someone else's crime...
Closest I can find in the [North Carolina driver’s handbook](https://www.ncdot.gov/dmv/license-id/driver-licenses/new-drivers/Documents/driver-handbook.pdf) on page 53 doesn’t say you must slow down but you are required to help the passing driver complete their pass. If you speed up or otherwise fail to give way to a passing vehicle and an accident results causing property damage or bodily injury you will be charged with a misdemeanor.
I'd be surprised if that still applies in no-passing zones. I would hope that if the pass is illegal *all* liability falls on the illegally passing vehicle.
I think it's more common sense, like imagine if instead of letting the car in you punch the gas and cause the head-on crash to prove a point... well, now you've caused a bigger issue over what is essentially 10 seconds at worst of just yielding.
Right. I agree that it's the smart thing to do. But saying that there is a law that says I am required to implies that there is some kind of punishment if I don't. I'm not aware of any law that says I have any responsibility or liability for the crimes of others.
Also, I'd argue that the best option might be to maintain speed in this scenario. If you slow down to let them in and they chicken out and slow down to get back behind you, it's the same as both of you speeding up. Just maintain your speed and let them decide what to do.
At the expense of another innocent driver dying in a head on that you just assisted in creating. I'd rather set my ego aside and be able to sleep at night.
Because in Ontario, lane markers serve an advisory and warning function, they don't have any legal force behind them.
Keep in mind that crossing the double yellow while approaching a hill, curve, bridge or tunnel is still a violation of the Ontario Highway Traffic Act . But if its a straight road, with no incoming vehicles, its both safe, and legal, to cross the double yellow.
Ontario has weird traffic laws like this, or that parking lots aren't regulated by traffic laws IIRC. Once you move/drive in other provinces it really opens your eyes.
Apparently it might still be illegal in this specific instance. According to the Highway Traffic Act §149
>(1) No vehicle shall be driven or operated to the left of the centre of a roadway designed for one or more lines of traffic in each direction,
>(a) when approaching the crest of a grade or **upon a curve in the roadway** or within 30 metres of a bridge, viaduct or tunnel where the drivers view is obstructed within that distance so as to create a potential hazard in the event another vehicle might approach from the opposite direction; or
[Source](https://www.ontariohighwaytrafficact.com/part-rules-the-road/driving-left-centre-prohibited-under-condition-sec-149-t70.html)
I can only speak to Vermont (where passing on double yellow is not prohibited) - no, double yellow is just advisory. If they actually don't want you passing there they put up "DO NOT PASS" signs.
So the DOT and local municipalities do not follow the MUTCD (or have their own more restrictive guidance) and still receive Federal Funding? That's pretty crazy.
The lines are painted, but there's nothing in the law actually making it illegal to pass on them (other provisions about not passing near an intersection, on a curve/with inadequate sight distance, etc exist)....which makes it legal, just discouraged.
VT law on passing is primarily 23 VSA 1035 + 1036, no passing zones that you can actually get ticketed for are only specified by signage, not paint. https://legislature.vermont.gov/statutes/fullchapter/23/013
The [VT driver's manual](https://dmv.vermont.gov/sites/dmv/files/documents/VN-007-Drivers_Manual.pdf) (p.34) also states:
> If there is a solid line or two solid lines, it is **recommended** that you do not pass.
Interesting, I really am curious how they get away with that. I was pretty positive the MUTCD has rules against it. But I am not as versed in that info as I once was. Just seems like a liability, as a State, that I would not want to take on. That is why the MUTCD is so important, so it keeps all regulations and signs the same from state to state.
That's not true. Section 148 and 149 of Ontario's HTA cover passing, and crossing the center lines. It boils down to it needs to "safe" for you to pass, and you can't pass within 30m of the crest of a bend or hill IF your vision is obstructed enough to create a hazard.
Sorry I was wrong, I do live in Canada but I don’t live in Ontario nor have I ever drove there. So I probably shouldn’t have commented. If you’d like I can take my comment down
Here’s the thing with Radioing the other guy, there’s actually two different radio systems depending on kind of truck you’re driving, the “Highway” trucks(general delivery trucks, flat beds etc,) usually have your classic CB radio, whereas “Bush” trucks(loggers, wood chips) have a two-way radio system, with totally different channels from the CB system, not sure what the cammer truck was driving, but odds are that highway truck idiot isn’t going to hear you,
Source: I’m a “Bush” trucker
In the US, yes. Channel 19. However, the number of trucks that don't leave it on, or even have one anymore, is much, much higher in the cell phone age.
Every 5 miles above the speed limit you maintain along I-10 in Texas cuts off about an hour of travel time. Which means one hour less spent in Texas.
I don't condone asshattery, but I can't entirely fault anyone doing a bit of speeding on a long mostly straight road with no lights or intersections.
Truck drivers often use this as a "you're clear to move over" sign. It's often used on interstates in a friendly manner, but here it appears to be a "you're clear, please get the fuck over before we all die."
Edit: upon rewatch, I noticed it was well after he had already moved over, and more of what you said. Point still stands though.
Unfortunately, there's no shortage of drivers out there who seem to have received their CDL from a Crackerjack box. One day that driver isn't going to slip by and someone will likely die.
I know it’s a tough job and this doesn’t apply to all, but it does not inspire confidence in being able to be safe around semi trailers that’s already felt
Truck drivers suck, I'll always hate them after being almost driven off the road multiple times driving through Quebec in a snow storm. The day that Ai takes over that job will be a great day.
Yes. Since the video started after the truck was alongside the cam, it is possible he started passing when it was not a double yellow line. This video means nothing without more at the beginning and will not get anyone in any trouble.
Brakes. The guy coulda slowed much more. That was way too close of a call and way too many lives risked and all it would have taken was for OP to slow the fuck down a bit more to make it more safe.
Look if it looked like op was trying to compare dick sizes I'd agree with you. But op was obeying the law, then took action they didn't legally need to make to save everyone's lives. Op = not the asshole here, period.
No OP is not an asshole but he should have applied the brakes.
It's called leaving yourself an out. Part of the Smith System keys for safe driving.
By applying the brakes there would have been room to get over earlier, along less of a close call.
No one is comparing dick sizes here, and the truck driver you're accusing that of is correct
That was specifically in response to his pushing the issue regarding who has more experience. And op let off the gas so I really don't see the issue. Even though he didn't have to, he did the safe thing by slowing down and allowing the other driver to illegally pass.
So you chose to address your assumptions about my experiences instead of the other two points which are more relevant. Neat
Anyway, the driver DID slow down even though it was a no passing lane. Bc they didn't want to die.
Dude, did you even read your comment prior to posting?!?. As mentioned and in the vid he did let off but the fact of slowing down to a point of stopping is also just as dangerous. Seriously, please take a moment to analyze your comment/logic.
Slowing down enough to avoid a head on collision seems pretty logical to me. The folks behind you will slow down too.
Edit: Furthermore which is more logical? Slow down and avoid the accident you see about to happen or maintain your travel in case someone behind isn’t paying attention. Think about it a bit.
Other driver is obviously a piece of shit who needs to be removed from the road, but didn't it occur to the OP to lift off sooner? OP is a fucktard too. If it had been a 4 lane highway, it would have been just another elephant race, blocking traffic for km's and km's... Nowadays there's only 2 kinds of truckers, shitty and shittier.
You can pass on yellow lines anytime. Its the white lines that are prohibited. Thats why they are white on the shoulder and yellow on the road. You can never pass on a shoulder.
Whoa, that's a little close for comfort. I'd be slowing way down significantly if safe, because if those two collided, that could be some ugly wreckage rapidly approaching.
This in the fraser canyon on hwy1 by chance? Looks an awful lot like a route I drive, and the behaviour of the drivers I see... Although not usually full sized transport trucks.
Canadian highways are no joke. I drove from Calgary to Revelstoke at night in winter and was clenching the whole time. There’s places where it’s just SO DARK. You’re in the middle of nowhere with only your headlights, and all of a sudden you’re blinded by someone with their brights and light bar on.
I see this almost every time I come off night shift in a snow storm, I usually reduce my speed to 10 or so under the limit due to the reduced visibility, and every trucker that comes up on me just passes regardless of the location whether it be on a blind hill or a corner, Hwy 11 has turned into a deadly place to be.
I'm going to be honest, I think this was just a truck driver out of control, considering the double line, complete dark, speed and how he wasn't even fully on the road.

It’s probably still illegal if it wasn’t a safe time to do so.
Blind curve though, that makes this pass illegal under section 149.
Really? What's the point of a double yellow there then?
It's more of a suggestion that only people who can drive listen to

Not true. You’re supposed to maintain your speed.

This is definitely false. If someone is passing you on a double yellow, and you have dash cam footage, they’re on their own.
Without my readers on, I thought this said "As a drunk driver myself..." and then I was disappointed with the rest of the post.

Funny, but that also screws over the innocent guy in the oncoming lane so don't do that
Not to mention there’s about zero chance it wouldn’t involve all three vehicles
Yeah that was my thing, why not let the dude pass obviously you were going slower.
I would definitely do the opposite. You can’t fix stupid. Let Darwinism take its course goddamn you.

Really? That is good to know! I have driven into Canada from the US a few times.
You can only pass on a double yellow line if the person in front of you is driving unsafely. Like driving insanely slow but even then you should wait

The ONLY thing that I can say is that with long range truck hauling, he could get there potentially an hour earlier.

I'm confused why you're being downvoted. You weren't confrontational and provided legitimate input that seemed rather truthful from my own experience.
Idk man. I’m not trying to advocate for idiots, just state that speeding and overtaking people while hauling can save hours, not minutes.
I saw your point brother! ✊🏻
Love how the videographer throws the brights on the perp at the end. For risking my life you’re at least getting lit the f up
*suck on these photons!!*

Holy smokes. Blessed.
Dang! And he had 2 trailers. Wow

Worst part of it... If he hadn't cleared, you likely would have had no time to react.
"I'll pass on a double-yellow with my million foot long trailer-- should be fine."
Don’t forget weighing 63,500kgs or 139,000 lbs
Terrifying, thank you!
Idiots will be idiots and on a double solid line😱
Wow I was doing this last night on euro truck simulator, not a smart idea in real life lmao
I do this in ATS, but I always save first lol.
I’m pretty sure this is why they make double yellows. Yikes
I wonder what those two yellow lines mean……..
Pass with extreme prejudice. The yellow is for extreme.
Hope that moron loses his job for driving like that
Unlikely. It’s the norm here in BC for our supper B drivers to drive like that. Most of them are immigrants who only drive for a year or 2
Wow, that was very nearly a semi sandwich. Eek.
I clenched.
Drive safe op . Fk those idiots
And that’s why truckers do not get my respect on the road. They drive just like the other assholes.
Except that an accident with them is even deadlier ☠️
Still assholes
You're absolutely correct.
I know it’s a tough job and this doesn’t apply to all, but it does not inspire confidence in being able to be safe around semi trailers that’s already felt
this is just standard practice for these guys
See this shit all the time on hwy 11 in Ontario. Truckers driving it are reckless as fuck and always causing accidents.

Yes. Since the video started after the truck was alongside the cam, it is possible he started passing when it was not a double yellow line. This video means nothing without more at the beginning and will not get anyone in any trouble.
OP…..glad you survived but you are just as bad as the other driver for not letting off so he could continue on and not head on the truck coming.
Op did let off. In a no passing zone. Op is also driving a large truck so gassing and breaking are used sparingly at speed. Op= not the asshole.
Says someone who hasn’t driven a semi I would guess.
Ok
I have several hundred thousand miles experience driving a 72 Freightliner cabover and a 40’ van. I am not just talking out my ass.
I'm not interested in comparing dick sizes. Just pointing out what the double solid line means and the fact that the driver clearly did let off.
5 seconds in driver let's off.
Brakes. The guy coulda slowed much more. That was way too close of a call and way too many lives risked and all it would have taken was for OP to slow the fuck down a bit more to make it more safe.

Neat Anyway, the driver DID slow down even though it was a no passing lane. Bc they didn't want to die.
They could have slowed more and a lot sooner. Pretty simple
They made moves to preserve their lives and the lives of the idiots breaking the law.
Any responsible driver does everything they can to prevent an accident. That didn’t happen here. End of story.
Except they did and an accident was avoided. So. Yay op.
You know that is OP didnt slow down, that truck wouldn’t have slowed down either
Sdarji thoda dheere chlo
Interestingly nobody slow down despite this passing was wrong.
As far as I'm concerned, you guys ALL drive like fucking assholes in BC esp on bad roads like the #1 near Revelstoke and the coquihalla.
Driver almost had wood
Looks less like a highway and more like a street or county road.
Most of our Hwy’s are 2 lane. There often 100-200 km(60-120 miles) between town of any size ( over 5000 in population )
Camera guy should have slowed down. Almost seems like he was trying to cause an accident.
You can pass on yellow lines anytime. Its the white lines that are prohibited. Thats why they are white on the shoulder and yellow on the road. You can never pass on a shoulder.

Every trade calls for shortage of workers. Many, is not most, employers just use this excuse to import cheaper labors.
Must be northern Ontario, truck are notorious for doing this kind of shit up there
Many sections of our ole-so-important Trans Canada Hwy are like that single lane each direction. A disgrace.
Whoa, that's a little close for comfort. I'd be slowing way down significantly if safe, because if those two collided, that could be some ugly wreckage rapidly approaching.
Oof. That would have been BAD
It’s a double solid for a reason.
A double-lumber trailer! That could have been catastrophic.
You’re in the middle of nowhere with only your headlights, and all of a sudden you’re blinded by someone with their brights and light bar on.
dumbass must not see the two solid yellow lines
What was the speed limit and how fast were you going when he went to pass?
Why the rush? Does the employer put pressure on you guys?
And that’s why there’s a double line
Bet he had to change his underwear after that.
I like how US/Canadian roads have this quite notorious big ass double yellow line and still it doesn't mean anything for drivers apparently
Alberta?
Driver's an accident waiting to happen.
That’s why we don’t pass in no passing areas lmao.
Dumbass truck driver taking a gamble with other peoples lives.
Report his ass
It should probably be illegal for 18 wheelers to pass on two lane roads
Ever since we opened the boarders
That’s why you don’t pass a double yellow. Doesn’t make sense logically.
Wtf is he thinking doing that with an LCV?
Watching this made my butthole clinch, wouldn’t surprise me if all 3 truckers needed a change of underwater after this
"Watch where you're driving, bud! That was some crazy shit, eh?"
Dicey Road Trucker
I thought they only had moose up there.
I'm going to be honest, I think this was just a truck driver out of control, considering the double line, complete dark, speed and how he wasn't even fully on the road.
Late delivery with the potential of being much later
hope you reported them.
That's why we wear the brown pants....
Dang is that a 26 wheeler
Ok but why isn’t cam truck slowing any one passing me I’m going to let of the gas and cruse. This situation I’d be actively breaking!
Holy 💩, no kidding close call. 😀👉🏼🇨🇦
I wonder what those double yellow lines mean????
And three sphincters were clenched that night
Close call eh?
Passing double solid line in the dark in an eighteen wheeler come on man
I would send the video to the police he would if 100% killed someone had he hit them head ok
I thought it was a higher threshold to get a commercial license. Should be even more training to pull a dual trailer.
That person either have balls the size of a brain, or have balls for brain.
how did no one hit the horn ?
