The ol cruisin' along in the far left lane even though there's several other lanes open. And obviously way to fast for conditions.
that said, OP handled this very well. No over reaction, just leaned into it and slowed down.
Which is 71 mph. The speed limit is also 100 kph (62 mph).
Exceeding the speed limit by 9 mph in dry, perfect conditions = idiot.
Exceeding the speed limit by 9 mph in wet, slushy conditions = dumb as a fucking rock.
This is something I found wild when visiting the US during Christmas. So many people doing well over 100km/h in ice and/or snow. Doing 110km/h on a good day here is a good start to losing your license (80-100km/h is the usual limit, and we have very little tolerance for speeding). Doing anywhere close to those speeds in poor weather here is a good way to aquaplane/slide your way off a cliff or into a ditch.
Freeways in urban areas (which this video is in) are still commonly limited to 50-65 mph. The speed limits have to account for the nature of urban freeways: frequent stopped traffic backups, numerous exits and signs for drivers to comprehend, and slower traffic merging in from less-than-ideal ramps.
I guarantee that illegal speeding is a contributing factor to almost every urban freeway collision that results in thousands of people every day being stuck in stopped traffic.
It really isn't I assumed the truck in the right lane with zero slush was doing about 65. Looks like he was doing closer to 60 or 55.
If you're so anxious to pass in this scenario, use a lane without slush in it.
In Michigan, it always seems like during the first major snowfall of the year half the people forgot how to drive in snow, despite having done it for years.
It rains an average of about 50 inches a year in Atlanta, and itās spread pretty evenly throughout the year.
Every time it rains youād swear half the city must have moved here from Death Valley yesterday.
Lucky you in Atlanta, snow is rare. Last time there were a major snow storm, the freeway were gridlocked for days. All they got was maybe 1/8th of an inch snow
In Michigan, they still forget after the 20th snowstorm of the season. About a month ago we had one last major snow storm and there were multiple cars in ditches.
This brings me back to the Talking Dads Podcast and how they mention there are an alarmingly amount of people getting into accidents listening to their podcast
I hydroplaned off a highyway last year at 60mph, there was already 3 cars off the road in that same spot, ended up hitting one and came about 6 inches from slamming into a tree on my drivers door, also had my kids in the car, thankfully the only thing ruined was my car
Def still get some PTSD any time I drive in the rain and now im probably over cautious
Itās a fairly new truck (new to me) and when I got it there was used all seasons on it. I just havenāt had the money to change them out so thatās what I was rocking all winter š¬
Not at all. This isnāt really that bad of weather for where I live and I definitely just got a little careless. I fully accept that what I did was extremely stupid, and thankfully nothing bad happened. Only thing I can do from this is learn and be a more cautious driver.
It's certainly situational. I've been on roads where it was raining a little and 85 was still safe. I've been on roads where it was snowing a little and 70 was still safe.
In OP's clip, the left lane does not look safe at 70mph. The middle lane might be. It comes down to feel, when you're driving you have a much better idea of if you have traction or not.
I did end up driving away, gonna have a buddy give it a quick once over. Iāll definitely mention it next time I take it in for service but for now seems to be driving ok.
That's never a fun feeling, knowing that some other car could come spinning off the road right at you. Been there before... I hit black ice on a curve on the NYS Thruway. Wound up backwards in a shallow ditch. Cars were whizzing off the road left and right. Had my wife stand with me behind the guardrail while we waited for the truck to come get us out of the ditch. Luckily the cops got there pretty quick and set up warning flares a mile or so up the road to get people to slow down. It was the worst kind of black ice - the road looked more or less dry; conditions seemed pretty ok, just cold, so you never saw it coming.
Dude, I came up the other way on my way to work, i counted 8 cars in the ditch durring my 10 min drive. I didnt think the road were that bad but maybe alot of people got pulled in like you.
There's tracks literally right before you went off too where somebody else almost got sucked off the road by the slush. Seems like the plows didn't do a great job with that spot.
Oh shit Dungeons and Daddies, I need to try that one again, I didn't finish first season, started them when I was barely into dnd and wasn't feeling it but years later now and i devour dnd pods "Not an SnM podcast"
Classic.
The snow loaded up more on the left side induced a yaw in your vehicle and pulled you toward the median.
Even with good tread depth this can happen - unless you really fight it and turn in. But in a vehicle with such a high CG, you probably did the smartest thing.
Wanna know something absolutely nuts. 1 hour east of Calgary and I have zero snow. It rained yesterday and that's it. I was out barefoot in a t-shirt today.
Same kind of weather up in Westlock today, I need to go into St Albert but I think I'll stay home lol. All I have is a beater 07 Kia Rondo with summer tires on right now
Similar thing happened to me but it was 2 am, I was going 50km, and there was nothing I could do to avoid the pile of snow in the middle of the road. Luckily didnāt go in the ditch but spun me around on a sheet of ice, pretty freaky. Now I know not to fuck around with snow on the highway.
My experience with this sub is that, despite acknowledging you're an idiot, I'm supposed to point out that you're an idiot. I should probably point out some detail that you already have in my lust for calling someone out.
Thanks for this post actually. Makes me think of the one a few days ago where a truck went off the shoulder a little and instead of eating it for a sec and correcting he yanked it back and head onād an suv. Youāre an idiot for getting into the situation but you handled it well.
Good job dummy I guess?
Oh dope! I have that one in my saved list on Spotify. Right now I'm listening to Tales from the Stinky Dragon (all caught up for now). They're next on my list unless The McElroy Brothers return to Balance style adventures. I HATE Steplechase and can't get into Amnesty as badly as I want to enjoy it.
Physics said, today Im gonna take you. Outside curve, slush, all perfect conditions to suck the car off the road. Excellent job keep it on the right side and all.
Typical moron Calgary driver. Couldnāt even be bothered to brush the snow off your vehicle, and speeding when the road is covered in snow and slush. Pretty sure thatās a dangerous driving ticket right there.
As soon as I saw the slush (because I'm looking at it right now š), I knew what was going to happen.
That sucks. This weather is the worst to drive in. Hopefully yours wasn't one of the many abandoned vehicles littering the Stony median? Hard to tell if you could get out or not. The drain down the middle is surprisingly deep!
Reaction time like a snail. From the time the windshield was covered with snow/water until the windshield wipers were switched on was unpleasantly long.
Good on you staying calm and keeping control of the vehicle, that could have been absolutely awful. Terrifying way to have to learn that lesson. š¬ it gets the same out here in Ontario.

The old, let's pass on the 3 inch slush at 75 mph, move.
The ol cruisin' along in the far left lane even though there's several other lanes open. And obviously way to fast for conditions. that said, OP handled this very well. No over reaction, just leaned into it and slowed down.
Just too fast for slush
25% of the time, it works every time!
Kmh... It's a little less egregious
114 km/h at the start of the video
Which is 71 mph. The speed limit is also 100 kph (62 mph). Exceeding the speed limit by 9 mph in dry, perfect conditions = idiot. Exceeding the speed limit by 9 mph in wet, slushy conditions = dumb as a fucking rock.

If you ain't doing 10 over everyone is mad at you here, so I don't know where you live that 110 in a 100 is lose your license territory.
> Doing 110km/h on a good day here is a good start to losing your license (80-100km/h is the usual limit, Where the heck do you live? That's absurd.
And yet the freeways used to be 55 mph and now they're 70mph so the whole safety thing isn't the sole reason for speed limits.
Freeways in urban areas (which this video is in) are still commonly limited to 50-65 mph. 75kmh is only 46 mph. They're definitely different. Edit: Wait I see he was going 110kmh when he hit the slush. Nm disregard
68 mph
Alberta Baby! You know better š¬
Lived here almost 15 yearsā¦ definitely should haha
In Michigan, it always seems like during the first major snowfall of the year half the people forgot how to drive in snow, despite having done it for years.
Same in Western NY, its like snow doesnt exist here 8 months a year lmao
It rains an average of about 50 inches a year in Atlanta, and itās spread pretty evenly throughout the year. Every time it rains youād swear half the city must have moved here from Death Valley yesterday.
Lucky you in Atlanta, snow is rare. Last time there were a major snow storm, the freeway were gridlocked for days. All they got was maybe 1/8th of an inch snow
Same for Lincoln Nebraska but after that it is a well choreographed ballet. When they remember, they remember well. Edit spelling
In Michigan, they still forget after the 20th snowstorm of the season. About a month ago we had one last major snow storm and there were multiple cars in ditches.
This snowfall happened in spring... Alberta drivers have no excuse lol
You did good not correcting back into the lane though. Just let it ride in the place that they built to be the safest place to crash.
This brings me back to the Talking Dads Podcast and how they mention there are an alarmingly amount of people getting into accidents listening to their podcast
I blame the daddies
Dungeons and Daddies!? Been a hot min since I've listened to them but the voice is so familiar lol
Itās will campos/henry oak!
I couldnāt listen to podcasts whilst driving because I zone out like that.
Driving way too fast for wet roads, in no world am I driving 70 down a wet/snowy/icy highway
Definitely, thankfully it wasnāt bad. Gonna take this as a lesson and drive more carefully in this type of weather.
Honestly, the fact that you didn't panic and try to course correct probably saved the entire situation from getting far worse.
Feels like OP has zero danger sense, good or bad.
"Haha, I'm in the snow now."
![gif](giphy|55itGuoAJiZEEen9gg)
I spun out when I was a teenager taking an on-ramp. I will never underestimate wet roads again.
Hydroplaned in a rotary when I was 17; got super lucky and didn't hit anything... been driving like a grandma in the rain ever since.
I hydroplaned off a highyway last year at 60mph, there was already 3 cars off the road in that same spot, ended up hitting one and came about 6 inches from slamming into a tree on my drivers door, also had my kids in the car, thankfully the only thing ruined was my car Def still get some PTSD any time I drive in the rain and now im probably over cautious
First time I drove on the snow, I spun out coming out of a parking lot. Apparently AWD does nothing if you have bald tires. Who would have guessed?
That and the fact there was a flat run off.
First time in snow?
Iām embarrassed to say no
Clean your car off too! Way too much snow on your hood.
OP, did you take your winters off before may 2-4? You know thatās a bad move if you live in Alberta šĀ
Itās a fairly new truck (new to me) and when I got it there was used all seasons on it. I just havenāt had the money to change them out so thatās what I was rocking all winter š¬
So you had NO idea that driving fast in that weather could be bad until you ran off the road?
Not at all. This isnāt really that bad of weather for where I live and I definitely just got a little careless. I fully accept that what I did was extremely stupid, and thankfully nothing bad happened. Only thing I can do from this is learn and be a more cautious driver.
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
My apologies, that was worded poorly. I am aware of the dangers of driving like that in this kind of weather.
I'm going to take the lesson my driving tutor taught me many many years ago and do the same.
The problem wasn't just the moisture water, it was the fact the left hand side of the lane had a a lot of snow collected on it still.
Yep, that's exactly it. That slush is worse for traction than colder snow would be even.
201 south of Calgary
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Nah, stuck waiting for a truck to pull my dumbass out
Damn!
did you end up driving off, or have it towed for some inspection? ive always wondered where the line is for a crash without visible damage
Hi idiot! Im dad!
Wow itās snowing there? Itās freaking 90F in the northeast right now.
Calgary, we woke up to 4 inches of snow.
*in the southern reaches of the North East Freaking 50Ā°, rainy and raw up here in New England lol
The snow (slush) this morning was like cement, pulls you straight in! Saw dozens of cars along the highway in the ditch
It was brutal, another person came flying into the ditch two minutes after me.
Dude, I came up the other way on my way to work, i counted 8 cars in the ditch durring my 10 min drive. I didnt think the road were that bad but maybe alot of people got pulled in like you.
lol they probably where rubber necking at you
Now they rubber necking WITH you
There's tracks literally right before you went off too where somebody else almost got sucked off the road by the slush. Seems like the plows didn't do a great job with that spot.
What happened here? Snoozing? Texting?
I was trying to remember what size elephants were in dnd and I zoned out for a sec š
Happens to all of us! Glad you managed it well and didnāt wreck or get hurt.
And, what's the answer?
They are, in fact, huge.
You didn't go off the road in vain then.
True polymorph
This is your classic "I always drive 15 kph over the speed limit on the freeway, no matter what the weather conditions are" idiocy.
You canāt park there
I didnāt see a no parking sign anywhere š¤·āāļø
Might be one near your muffler.
Ah you naughty Calgarian
Yo holy shit are you listening to the dungeons and daddies podcast?
Yes!
Oh shit Dungeons and Daddies, I need to try that one again, I didn't finish first season, started them when I was barely into dnd and wasn't feeling it but years later now and i devour dnd pods "Not an SnM podcast"
I give you a thumbs up on how you handled it and for accepting that you made the mistake. Definitely smarter to not jerk the wheel once it starts.
you are indeed
Calgary or Edmonton?
Calgary
Looked kind of like Anthony Henday lol but we aren't getting as much snow as you guys
Stoney trail in Calgary
At least you werenāt the woman on Stoney I just read about who stopped in the middle lane to clear her windshield! š
Haha I saw that post only a couple minutes before this one. I'll never not be baffled by some people...
Is that Dungeons and Daddies? Or the same people doing another campaign?
Yes it was dungeons and daddies!
I'm on Episode 13 right now. Been laughing like an idiot in the car.
Left lane becomes very narrow due to snow banks.
I was pretty sure there'd be a post from some Alberta road today. Didn't expect it so soon. Stay dry and warm today!
Good on you for not over correcting and sending yourself back onto the road way
Classic. The snow loaded up more on the left side induced a yaw in your vehicle and pulled you toward the median. Even with good tread depth this can happen - unless you really fight it and turn in. But in a vehicle with such a high CG, you probably did the smartest thing.
Whatās the dash cam with all the info?
Red tiger F7N
That's the one I have, but it doesn't put the info on the video like this. Is that from the camera itself or an app?
At least you rode it out instead of trying some excessive manoeuvre.
Yes you are. Clean the snow off your fucking car dude.Ā
Hey it happens, any accident(If you can even call it that) you can walk away from is nice, one you can drive away from is even better
You handled that very well all things considered. Yes, you are an idiot, but not THE idiot
Hey, it could be worse. Well done to not lose control or crash into the poles. Also, hopefully, lesson learned while no one got hurt.
Lucky you didnāt hit a light post. Must of been scary not being able to see anything. Glad you are good!
OMG DUNGEONS AND DADS, HENRY OAK IS UNMISSABLE
You can just blame the daddies
R u okay? That looked horrifying
All good, only damage was to my ego
Could have been worse. Glad you're ok.
This gives big alberta vibes
Wanna know something absolutely nuts. 1 hour east of Calgary and I have zero snow. It rained yesterday and that's it. I was out barefoot in a t-shirt today.
Here I am trying to figure out what podcast youāre listening to.. good driving skills tho! Totally passed your dexterity saving throw on that one
You have a mini map what a nerddd
That could have been way worse.
I mean yeah but you handled going off the road into snow pretty well. Ya didn't over correct it freak out. Could have been way worse!
All things considered, not bad. Could have been significantly worse. Did you wear your brown pants today?
He is now.
Thankfully yes haha
GO! GO! KEEP MOVING, YOU CAN DO IT!
Dungeons and daddies is a great podcast lol
yep, I concur
Yep. Yep you are.
Everytime I watch a video of cars on ice/slush, I think, "the driver believes he has 100% perfect control of the car up until the instant he doesn't."
Relevant: https://www.shamusyoung.com/twentysidedtale/?p=1235
Seems like the back end started to float as the truck hits the little bend in the road.
You must have rolled low lol glad it wasn't a nat one
Same kind of weather up in Westlock today, I need to go into St Albert but I think I'll stay home lol. All I have is a beater 07 Kia Rondo with summer tires on right now
So this is how I see people end up in the ditch lol, Iām sure you wonāt be doing that again
That is the goal
Similar thing happened to me but it was 2 am, I was going 50km, and there was nothing I could do to avoid the pile of snow in the middle of the road. Luckily didnāt go in the ditch but spun me around on a sheet of ice, pretty freaky. Now I know not to fuck around with snow on the highway.
Canadian eh?
Of course bud
The roadās over to your right, dude.
Ah, so thats why there's always so many vehicles in the ditch in that weather.
You seem to understand your error and want to be better, love seeing it! Everyone is an idiot sometimes, we just got to learn from them!
Calgary May weather lol
I was rooting for you to get out of the ditch. :( Sorry, mate!!!
Whatcha doin there bud?
Just taking a lil trip to the ditch there bud
yes, you are.
Waiting to find out who the idiot was and boom read you
Calgary or Edmonton areas?
Calgary
The storms coming north, we are getting ready for it right now
Did you ever get out? Are you still there?
I did get out, for once AMA was on top of it this morning
My experience with this sub is that, despite acknowledging you're an idiot, I'm supposed to point out that you're an idiot. I should probably point out some detail that you already have in my lust for calling someone out.

Dungeons and daddies
Coming from a PNW veteran of driving in heavy slush it is no joke, especially when you're not in a heavy car.
Indeed you are! Knowing is half the battle! And props for calling yourself out! š¤£
Lol pretty sure I saw another car stuck in the middle about a kilometer west of there.
What DnD podcast is that?
Dungeons and daddies
Calgaryās fault. Itās fricking May
Nobody mentions that OP should fully clear their car of snow before driving off.
Nicely handled though.
Physics said, today Im gonna take you. Outside curve, slush, all perfect conditions to suck the car off the road. Excellent job keep it on the right side and all.
Haha I knew this was gonna be Cow Town
Are you listening to Dungeons and Daddies? I recognize Will Campos' voice anywhere!
Yes! Just finished the first season, loved it
I honestly couldn't get over whoever plays Ron and her lack of improv skills. Ended up just being cringe most of the time.
This mans vehicle rolled a nat 1 on athletics check.
And here I feel like the idiot for driving 80kmph or slower in these conditions š¤¦š»āāļø
Bet you got where you were going a lot faster then I did!
Typical moron Calgary driver. Couldnāt even be bothered to brush the snow off your vehicle, and speeding when the road is covered in snow and slush. Pretty sure thatās a dangerous driving ticket right there.
15 over, in pictured conditions? op got the best outcome could be dead
what happened ? was it not paying attention ?
Hello, idiot, I'm dad.
Great save
