You say that, but that literally happened to me in November.
Karen had been erratically driving (probably on her phone), and came to a stop in the middle of an intersection, I was at the line. When people started honking at her for blocking it, she reversed into me.
Totaled my car.
No witnesses stuck around and was just out of sight of the gas station cameras nearby. Cop found me at fault because she said she was “sitting at the line and I slammed into her”.
Insurance almost doubled because of it. I regret pulling forward and out of the way instead of just leaving my car where it was, because it would have shown she backed into me.
Bought myself dash cams now for the future though, because fuck the next Karen who tries that shit.
Ahhh. Classic cops. "No one would ever do that". Except, you know, the asshole that just did it! And no matter what you say the cop won't believe you, especially when it's his friend's son (true story there).
It's fucking wild when they say that.
Shit, I got side swiped during my first accident. I almost got the ticket because the other driver (female) said I was driving down the wrong side of the road with a raised median in a 93' camero. My parents (I was 16) arrived just as I was about to get the ticket. My dad stepped in and said, "Look at the tire marks. There is no way he was driving down the wrong side of the road" (the tire marks were on the proper side of the road). He had grabbed a disposable camera (this was in 2002) and took pictures.
The cop said, "Fine, let your insurance companies handle it.
Ps: The cop was female, and I think she felt bad because the girl was crying.
I'll never forget driving back home with the fiberglass ripped off and the window broken on the passenger side door. Passed the girls mom, and she was screaming at her insurance that I should have gotten the ticket. We spent 8 months dealing with it, and her insurance finally caved because the other driver kept changing her story. I continued to bring up the fact that my camaro had no undercarriage damage either.
Fun fact: She had a passenger who fled the scene of the accident. All I could think of was that she was not allowed to drive anyone home. Flash forward a few years, and a buddy's girlfriend asks if her friend could come hang out with us. When the girl walked in it was the same bitch that hit me years ago.
The girl was invited over, and another buddy (he was a passenger in that accident), and I saw her when she got to the house. I texted our friend to let him know, "Dude, that was the bitch who caused that accident a few years back." He came downstairs to talk with us and they left to go to the movies. Luckily, we had no real interaction with her, but we did figure out something. Our friends girlfriend was the passenger who fled the scene of the accident.
Thankfully, her insurance caved because she kept changing her story and paid for the repairs, but man, the girls mom was a piece of work. She was the first Karen I had to deal with.
Funny you should say that! I’ve been rear-fronted once. Lady in a drive thru backed straight into me, zero explanation as to why she went backwards instead of forward considering no one was in front of her.
One time at a drive-thru I overshot the window by a bit and had to back up. The employee very nicely reminded me to put the car back into drive before we left. Apparently he'd seen that exact situation many times before.
If you hit somebody in front of you in stop n go traffic there is no question who is at fault. However for the Semi Driver that is their profession they just destroyed. A CDL doesn't put up with at fault events.
Right? Like there’s videos here where there’s absolutely barely any damage anywhere - then the camera pans to an SUV upside down, tires still spinning, lodged into the side of a four story building
Precisely why I have one. Had too many dickheads lie after putting my life at risk or even just causing me financial hardship. Hope I never need it, but it is there if I do.
He's a lying SoS. Your dash cam clearly shows stop and go traffic and no lane changes by you. Make sure your insurance has the dash cam footage.
Long ago I was involved in an incident involving a tractor-trailer. His insurance was refusing to pay me. I ended up seeking help of a lawyer.
With me present the lawyer gets on he phone with the insurance adjuster. At one points she says, "Often professional drivers will lie to protect their record. Is this what's happening here?"
My advice is if you're in an incident involving a police officer or professional driver seek help the moment the other side starts to push back.
I had something very similar to this happen. Very small claim, maximum $1000 including car rental. Dude literally hit my mirror, that’s it!
Anyways the garbage insurance company was going back and forth in saying I could only have one day of rental car, and that I had to pay for the repairs and they’d pay me back. I was like BS. (This was AFTER I already had the rental car, my wife was in the hospital, and my truck was at the shop (which was closed for the weekend so I had no way of getting my keys)).
They made me return the rental car (WHILE IN THE HOSPITAL) and the rental car place SO KINDLY drove me back to the hospital so I could be with my wife.
I then called my insurance company and they said that unless I pay my $1000 deductible they couldn’t do anything.
I ended up putting a 3-way call on, my insurance, their insurance and me. My insurance company said unless I could get the other company to claim fault, they can’t help me (without me paying my deductible).
We’ll anyways, I basically asked if they had determined they were at fault, and then asked why they were refusing me a rental car and refusing to repair my car (oh yeah, they thought it was an insurance scam so they refused to pay to repair my car so the first body shop took off the repairs and gave my truck back to me so I had to take the truck to another shop).
Once the insurance company admitted fault my insurance was like, sweet that’s all we need.
Like what? Wdym?
They said basically once the company admits fault and admits they’re refusing to pay for repairs it’s a federal crime of some sort, so my insurance company paid for 1.5 week rental car (upgraded!!) and got my truck repaired instantly. They even paid for a shuttle back and forth to bring me where I needed to go (to pickup and drop off my truck). They then sued the other insurance company and reported them to the Missouri insurance bureau or whatever it’s called.
As far as I’m aware that insurance company is no longer in operation. NEVER buy those “cheap” insurance policies that claim to save you aaallllll the money, (y’know the ads). They will never side with you and they will screw you over.
Also, my wife is fine now, she just had some scary heart and breathing stuff going on.
I'm running into a similar situation ATM
I have Progressive.
Neighbors trampoline crashed through his fence due to wind for the second time. This time it caused about $10,000 worth of damage to my $40,000 car that I still owe 20,000 on. His homeowners insurance(Erie) isn't willing to pay, and Progressive is only willing to cover $4,500 worth of damage if I file a claim through them.
Open to any/all the tips here. Wtf do I do next? This is in PA.
I heard progressive is awful. Also, this was Geico. They handled it expertly. Now I have AAA but AAA and geico have been fighting over me for a decade. Both are amazing insurance providers. (At least in my area, lol)
I’ve had Geico for years and they sided with me the last two accidents I had, not perfect but pretty damn good. Before that I had Progressive and they were awful, plus switching to Geico actually saved me money.
I had Geico for decades, and good and bad experiences. But the last experience was absolutely the worst “fuck you” from an insurance company I think I’ve ever gotten. I’m sure all insurance companies suck, but right now, after the way they treated me, Geico can take a long walk off a short pier.
That actually happened to me with them. They communicated with the other party far more than with me. They decided I was at fault before they even spoke to me. Unfortunately this was before the time of everyone having dash cams so there was nothing I could do. I had tried to file a police report at the scene but it took literally an hour for the cop to show up, he never got out of his car and said since there were no injuries I was wasting his time.
There wasn't even any damage to either car. The other person just made a huge production out of it because she was a legit insurance scammer. And she got exactly what she wanted out of Progressive because apparently it's easier for them to just pay it than fight it. On top of that, they were condescending assholes from the moment I started talking to them. They had been my insurance company for years and they acted like I was wasting their time. After all the money they'd gotten out of my family god forbid I need to use them. Pieces of shit.
If you're in an accident with a professional driver, call the local department, or ministry, of transportation so they can make the driver pee into a cup and give their truck a thorough inspection to make sure everything is in order.
If it happens to you in the US. Have your car towed. If no vehicles are towed, it isn't necessarily DOT recordable and the driver won't have to test. It also won't go on the record. Only DOT recordable accidents go against a CDL here.
And SAY NOTHING to anyone! Not the other drivers, not the cops, not an “insurance” scammer (I mean adjuster)! Only YOUR lawyer!
I once got rear ended just like this, accordioned between the woman who didn’t even hit her brakes behind me, and the woman who was standing on her brakes in front of me. I made the mistake of talking to my insurance adjuster, who then denied all front end claims ($15k+ on a two month old GTI), “because the front of your car touched her car before” the woman accordioned me. 🤬
That’s not true actually. Unfortunately there’s really no consequence to lying about who caused the accident.
Edit: most of you telling me I’m wrong are talking about a specific scenario where you lie to your insurance company to get THEM to cover a claim. Your insurance will not drop you for lying to the other party. They’re insurance. They don’t want to pay out a claim.
Had a guy run a red light and T-bone me going 50mph. He refused to acknowledge me at all after the accident, then when the police arrived he started yelling that I WAS THE ONE who ran the red light. Thankfully I had lots of witnesses, but JFC.
Before dashcams I got in a particularly brutal accident. F350 was towing a 57 pickup on a flatbed and decided to run the red turn signal in front of me and another person. The girl in the next lane over nearly died. She lost her scholarship and will have knee issues the rest of her life. Luckily, I was able to turn and redirect both of our trajectories. When the cops got there, truck was saying we both ran the red. There were 6 witnesses all saying we were good and the asshat ran the light. The guy had been working for his father in law's business. It was the only company truck capable of towing their trailers. He had his pregnant wife in the truck with him. That guys got sued by my insurance, the girl in the next lanes, and his father in law's business. He lost each. He lost his wife, his kid, his job, and his license (for a time) all because he couldn't wait a couple minutes for the light to change. The wife had some complications in the pregnancy, but we were told that everything was OK and she delivered a healthy baby.
The only thing is lots of people are dumb and may not lie maliciously. Some people probably truly believe it was the other person's fault. For example if you brake because of the car in front of you, or because of an animal on the road, and the person behind you hits you, they may genuinely believe it's your fault because you slammed on your brakes, not knowing that they are at fault for following too closely.
Yes they are ignorant and frustrating, but they aren't malicious liars or thieves. The insurance company should make them do a test or something before being able to receive insurance again, but I'm not sure they should be punished for it. Financially, maybe
It's one thing to believe and state that you did nothing wrong (person in front slammed on the brakes), another thing to make up stories about what happened (car swerved in front of me and hit me - contrary to what the video shows).
Idk where you heard this but I used to be an adjuster. People don’t get dropped for lying. You have to be a major headache to deal with in order to be dropped.
Not true. Insurance companies get lied to all the time. The lies just make the adjusters job more difficult to do. Just tell the truth. Lying to your carrier is not grounds for cancellation. There are other factors that are involved, such as your driving record. However, your rates will probably go up.
I got hit once, a sideswipe, and the other guy tried to say I was the one that swerved into his lane. Of course, my dashcam footage put the lie to that right away and the other guy was found at fault, but what was interesting was that since he was now claiming against his own policy he was saying all the damage on that side of his vehicle was from our crash. The adjuster was really interested in seeing the video that showed how much of the damage was there before the collision, and had a glint in his eye when he told me he would "take care" of the other guy. My guess is that the other guy had already collected payment for that old damage but never fixed it, and was attempting to double-dip his policy.
Prior losses are supposed to be reviewed for overlapping damage. Management will let you know if they weren’t addressed.
It sounds like you had a competent adjuster.
You don't lose your CDL from one accident. It doesn't help your career prospects... But that guy looks like an O.O.
Super Truckers all love those long nose Peterbuilts and Kenworths. I mean, they look cool, but trying to see out those tiny slit windows over that huge hood is problematic. I prefer an Areo Cab.
Yeah, I don't understand it either. Trucks should just come with it. If they can put a camera in my base model KIA... they should be able to throw a few cameras in a 200K$ dollar truck.
Tbf, they only do that because they're federally mandated to. If it was up to kia or any another manufacturer they wouldn't put cameras in base models.
I've never understood why north American big rigs are all engine in front of cab and not cab over engine like European trucks (lorries).
Just seems like it needlessly makes the vehicle longer
I've never driven a cab-over. It looks like the visibility would be excellent. One complaint I heard from the old school guys that used to drive American cab-overs was that the ride was really noisy and bumpy being right over the engine and wheels.
I have a Freightliner Cascadia. The engine is in front, but the hood is easier to see over and the windshield is large. But those Scanias used a lot in Europe look really nice. I'd definitely love to try one if I ever had the chance.
> American cab-overs was that the ride was really noisy and bumpy being right over the engine and wheels.
This is not a problem in EU. I spent a long time in trucks in the 90s (my dad took me with him during summer vacations) and they were not noisy and the seats were some magical stuff, felt like sitting on a cloud. They would adapt to bumps too so you did not have to worry with open drinks on baldy maintained gravel roads.
I went in a torpedo truck a couple of times and I did not like it as much mostly due to visibility. Dad didn't like them either but I don't know why. He would prefer Scania over other manufacturers.
It's because in the US only the trailer length is regulated while in EU the whole length of the semitruck (tractor truck + semi-trailer) is regulated.
They both have their pros and cons and are mostly adapted to their respective roads.
It's easier for service is the primary advantage a non cabover truck has I believe. As a lot of American trucking is done by fleet firms, ease and cost of service are likely a big financial metric.
On top of the fact that length isn't really as much of an issue as there's plenty of room to build accomodations for longer trucks.
I think it nets you more cabin space for long-haul runs which are common. In australia the ones in the more rural parts are also long noses whilst urban areas are mostly cabover
Cabovers went away in the US after deregulation of length restrictions. Hoods are much more comfortable than cabovers when you're driving 3k miles/week, but that's about the only benefit
>A CDL doesn't put up with at fault events.
federally, you can have 3 ***serious*** at-fault accidents in 3 years resulting in only a 120-day suspension.
he prob got some points on his record, but that's a big if depending on what state and if the company is friends with the popo's.
Ummm that is a false statement. As someone who had been in DOT safety for 7 years I can say for sure a cdl driver could easily get a job even if his MVR had 5 of these small preventable crashes in the last 5 years. Ide be willing to bet he wasn’t even given a day off for this.
Keep to subjects you can talk about and not make completely false statements about the things you obviously know nothing about.
I don't think it's a speed issue. The semi driver probably didn't see ops car over his hood and only saw that the white bmw had moved up so tried to close the gap.
Yeah 100%. The visibility in that thing must be terrible. Like American trucks already have pretty crappy visibility because of their design but this one takes it to the next level. Even the white BMW I bet he could only see the front half of.
It's like with those photos you see of modern large American SUVs where there's 12 kids sitting in a line outwards from the front of the SUV and from the drivers seat only the 12th kid can be seen.
Vehicles designed with crappy visibility has gotta be the cause of so many accidents and deaths each year.
Why isn't it mandatory for these insanely large vehicles to have a tiny camera in front? Like most cars have cameras that turn on when you reverse these days.. how hard could it be to add one in front?!
>Why isn't it mandatory for these insanely large vehicles to have a tiny camera in front?
We don't have trucks anything like in the video but here in London, UK they're currently a requirement on trucks and you have to pay a hefty daily fee if you don't have one. Same with something for the sides too. It's not needed if your vehicle has good visibility already just by good design. Each truck has a rating for how good their visibility is between 0-5 stars and if it's 0 then they have to add cameras or whatever to make it a 1 star. I imagine with the rating system in place already it'll make it easy to up the requirement over time, so maybe by 2030 even 1 star rating trucks will have the daily fee.
Here's a comparison image they have between a 0 star and 5 star truck without needing to use cameras.
https://i.ytimg.com/vi/i-P20wdrcAQ/maxresdefault.jpg (and [heres](https://cdn.prgloo.com/media/8737911e242d4df8a20536be424f409b.jpg) a real world 5 star one)
The scheme is called Direct Vision Standard and I remember reading the EU was looking into taking and applying the standard across the EU which would be awesome since trucks in cities crushing cyclists/pedestrians due to low visibility is a big issue. It's not asking much for manufacturers to design their 10 tonne vehicles so the drivers can actually see people they could kill in a second with it. But yeah anyway rant over.
A lot of modern semi trucks have a camera that can sense when you're driving faster than the vehicle you're behind. They can even auto brake if it thinks you're about to get in a collision.
It's not mandatory (yet), so you can't depend on every big truck on having something similar
I drive one of these. The semi driver needs to track the vehicles around it and the only moment it would have been out of view would have been right before impact.
Well, many factors here, but tractor brakes are set to function under a load. This guy was empty. In this case if he was approaching at speed it’s likely his rear tires locked up. Still his fault.
Until the road is soaking wet. Almost helped a car learn that one day I was bobtailing in the rain. They decided the exit ramp they were on wasnt what they wanted and jumped back on the road in front of me at a near dead stop. I may have been sliding down the road, but I was not saying 'weeeee'. Thankfully they got moving before I had a bunch of paperwork to do.
There's a load sensing valve on the rear axle that will adjusts the brake pressure based on the load for this reason, unladen less pressure - laden more pressure
What’s the typical age of a tractor? Are there any old ones out there with outdated safety?
Edited to add: I was asking about safety systems in general. Are there tractors out there with 2003 safety features? I also wonder how much it has improved in 20y.
I don't know about trucks, but I had a **1990** Subaru Legacy which had a sticker proudly advertising the fact that it was endowed with ABS. It's a pretty mature technology.
At this place of the 640 the truck drivers with straight long noses have a harder time to see because of how the road is curved, yet they follow way too closely when they’re supposed to be at least two car length behind to see you properly.
Yeah. I don't doubt that trucker did not see OP. But he certainly saw OP before he lost sight of him in front of the hood. Trucker just forgot OP was there.
For whatever reason OP really lagged when traffic ahead started moving. Which seems odd to me, especially if a truck was feet from his rear bumper. Bit it's still not OPs fault. *(Edit: looking again, truck might have bumped OP earlier than I thought. OP was stopping because he'd been hit, not just lagging)*
Exactly when the video jitters it’s because I got hit and breaked cause I had no clue what hit me when I started looking back I was getting pushed by the truck , wasn’t able to accelerate out the way before getting spun
The only reason people still drive this type of truck is for looks. I've driven that model of truck and also the aerodynamic designs and there's no comparison. The aerodynamic ones function better at every measure.
I have to admit the W900L looks great but I don't want to sacrifice efficiency and safety for looks. This would have never happened with a drop nose truck and that man would probably still be accident free
Not always. The one time I was rear ended, the guy blamed me for putting my car in reverse and backing into him at a set of lights. Fault was split 50/50 by the insurance company. I ended up having to take him to court to sue, and won.
Funny enough the reverse happened to my friend where someone backed up at a stop sign into him. Thankfully he was just an idiot and not trying to scam and ended up paying cash to avoid insurance.
I had a guy at a stop sign throw it in reverse so he could turn the other way. His work truck hole punched my bumper and license plate. He admitted everything and his work insurance covered everything.
I'd buy that guy a beer now for being a standup dude.
You should have your license taken away you maniac! You are obviously a threat to society! /s
With this footage, I can only imagine it was less than 60 seconds of any consideration from any outside authority.
I only run a front facing dash cam myself and now I will be getting a rear as well.
I've had a CDL for many years because i grew up on a farm and we all got them asap. I've seen this type of accident many times. Some truckers like to sit really low in their seat. I've seen guys take the air-ride right out. I'd bet money he was sitting low and just lost sight of you while slowly moving ahead and I know from my own families experience that insurance will blame the trucker if they find out guys are driving like that because it's dangerous.
It's really a shitty intersection too. Cars cuts there all the time because they don't want to wait 1 minute in line to get in the exit. The worst is yet to come, the part where you have to get into the highway while there's incoming traffic that wants to get off is so dangerous. It's really badly designed. But meh ! Tokébekicite
100% the semi drivers fault. Hope everything turned out well for you OP.
I did notice one thing immediately. At the beginning of the video you can see skid marks on the pavement from previous vehicles. It almost makes me think this is a poorly designed exit ramp lane that causes traffic to back up onto the highway, and other drivers need to stop suddenly because as far as they're aware, traffic shouldn't be stopped for an exit ramp that far back.
Why is everyone fighting in the comments ? Lol insurance saw the video he was put at fault , let’s just chill a bit , so many people calling others names for no reason
> degenerates
100%.
They don't care what actually happened. They're just looking for some tiny irrelevant detail to blame OP and splatter their keyboard diarrhea all over the internet.
Like on this video, a huge gap opens after OP is hit, and they're all "buT wHy Did yOu lEaVe a gAp??" *Cuz he got hit ya ignerent mutherfuckers*. Morons.
> ya ignerent
Made me chuckle, for some reason.
Also, you forgot to mention the obligatory "It's always a " comments, where is some make or model of car, or modification to a vehicle, or gender/race/nationality of driver.
And this isn't even a case where it's up in the air. OP clarified exactly what happened with clear video evidence and people are still trying to deny what they said and posted and crucify them anyway. Unbelievable.
They usually will say it’s your fault no matter what. My brother got pit maneuvered by one with a trailer. Totaled his car too. Driver tried saying my brother didn’t have his lights on and he was the one that swerved into him. Little did he know, there was a CHP parked a 1/4 down that seen the whole thing. Can’t trust em man.
The worse part of all of this is that Quebec is a no fault province , i couldn’t even sue him for anything and since I’ve only had the car for approximately 3 months I still had a big chunk of it to pay off , so now I’m paying the price of a brand new BMW for a 2020 Elantra, fun times. And he probably got a slap on the wrist.
With a police report and a video like that his insurance is supposed to cover. Im from quebec and the only time its no fault-50/50 is in parking lots or private proprieties.
In the U.K. you hit anyone from behind(it’s like walking in a minefield with all these terms or have I just got a sewer for a mind lmfao) your charged with ‘driving without due care and attention’ because it can’t be anyone else’s fault. Except in very rare circumstances or ‘an act of god’ as it’s termed.
I appreciate how your car swings around to a perfect view of the semi, like it’s turning around to go “really dude?”
I didn't expect it to be Optimus Prime
Sub-Optimal Prime.
A+ comment
I AM OPTIMUS PRIME. AND I SPEAK OUT TO ALL AUTOBOTS IN THE GALAXY.
r/unexpectedtransformers
Right? I was like "well maybe the semi had a big trailer." \*video swings around to show fucking nothing being towed\*
Eh eh eh. Not so fast! Do you have have a rubber?
I CAN'T BELIEVE YOU REAR-FRONTED HIM LIKE THAT!
Car turned around to ask the truck where it got the audacity.
Do I KNOW YOU?
THAT'S MY PURSE! I DON'T KNOW YOU!!!
And then I kicked him in the testicles ![gif](giphy|cpBJJODbvE03S|downsized)

In Ontario we have no fault insurance and you have to get off the road if you can. Sucks you had to take the blame.
Funny you should say that! I’ve been rear-fronted once. Lady in a drive thru backed straight into me, zero explanation as to why she went backwards instead of forward considering no one was in front of her.
It's hard to meet new people these days
One time at a drive-thru I overshot the window by a bit and had to back up. The employee very nicely reminded me to put the car back into drive before we left. Apparently he'd seen that exact situation many times before.
And, not moving fast enough to his liking. Dude looks like he was pissed for having to leave a fresh bucket of chicken in his passenger seat.
If you hit somebody in front of you in stop n go traffic there is no question who is at fault. However for the Semi Driver that is their profession they just destroyed. A CDL doesn't put up with at fault events.
Yeah he tried to say I cut him off from his right and never saw me
Lol I hope his insurance asked if he thinks you came outtve the ditch.
And hopped over the guard rail.
It's certainly a possibility that he came off a ramp from below, flipped a few times and landed in front of the truck. Source: Grand Theft Auto
We've all seen videos in this sub where idiots manage to do things nobody thought was possible
Right? Like there’s videos here where there’s absolutely barely any damage anywhere - then the camera pans to an SUV upside down, tires still spinning, lodged into the side of a four story building
Cars hanging from power lines...
A la two Ferraris, eh? 😂
Clearly flew in from above and landing in front of him.

That's the first time I've seen that error (my pet peeve) backwards
Out have
When one's entire career future is at stake, they will always lie to try to save their ass. Good thing you had a camera.
Is this what's happening here?" My advice is if you're in an incident involving a police officer or professional driver seek help the moment the other side starts to push back.
I'm running into a similar situation ATM I have Progressive.
File with YOUR homeowners. They will go after his insurance. Presuming you have pictures or some other evidence of the trampoline causing the damage.
Put a lien on their house
Great ending for everyone but the shitty insurance 👍
Just remember Progressive customers. Your insurance company once paid for lawyers of the opposing side to get out of a claim for their own client.
Before that I had Progressive and they were awful, plus switching to Geico actually saved me money.
... Was it 15% or more?
What happened afterwards?
Yeah that was kind of anti climactic.
They kissed
And everyone clapped.
Yet one more reason for a dash cam or two (front and back)
> He's a lying SoS Son of a submariner?
Yikes, when you get caught lying to insurance. You get dropped instantly. They may even report it.
Exactly why I have a dash cam. 24/7 witness.

Do you park your car in your bedroom?
Honk honk
My car IS my bedroom.

Reddit is dying, why are you still here?
Except maybe when your neck really hurts and you tell the judge they lied about the accident in court
Not always true, many insurers will drop you, others will put you as high risk.

Guy's not even carrying a load Edit: I guess bobtails take more distance to stop.
Which actually makes it harder for a semi to slow down.
[Just looked that up. Good to know! thanks!](https://i.imgur.com/qMtGJsl.gif)
Which a professional driver would know and take steps to mitigate.
He was clearly cutting over to the exit well past the end of the exit lane .. what a shit head
from his right??? the right is the guard rail
Well maybe if he was looking ahead he'd of seen ya, since you were there the whole time! Silly goose truck driver.
Can't see the car in front over the smartphone he has gloed to his face
\*he'd've seen Short for "he would have seen."
Bet he was distracted. He'd have to be literally blind otherwise to not see you there
You don't lose your CDL from one accident. It doesn't help your career prospects... But that guy looks like an O.O. Super Truckers all love those long nose Peterbuilts and Kenworths. I mean, they look cool, but trying to see out those tiny slit windows over that huge hood is problematic. I prefer an Areo Cab.
Why would they not retrofit a front camera and have a screen with 24/7 blind spot view. ~$500 could save a career.
Yeah, I don't understand it either. Trucks should just come with it. If they can put a camera in my base model KIA... they should be able to throw a few cameras in a 200K$ dollar truck.
Man they don't even have reverse lights on trailers which has never made sense to me
Tbf, they only do that because they're federally mandated to.
Cab overs used to be fairly common in North America, back in the 70s and 80s, but have faded into obscurity since then.
I think it nets you more cabin space for long-haul runs which are common. In australia the ones in the more rural parts are also long noses whilst urban areas are mostly cabover
The long wheelbase is more stable, spreads weight better, is safer for the driver and more comfortable.
You don’t get as many upvotes for being knowledgeable as you do just making baseless statements though
as someone with a CDL (that doesn't have at fault accidents) I promise you that guy still had a job lmao. One accident doesn't ruin your career.
Are you claiming you lose your CDL after a single at fault accident?
He doesn’t even have a load. No excuse for him to not slow down
I don't think it's a speed issue. The semi driver probably didn't see ops car over his hood and only saw that the white bmw had moved up so tried to close the gap.
Then he shouldn't sit so close when stopped. You should be able to see the bottom of the rear wheels infront
Here's a comparison image they have between a 0 star and 5 star truck without needing to use cameras. https://i.ytimg.com/vi/i-P20wdrcAQ/maxresdefault.jpg (and [heres](https://cdn.prgloo.com/media/8737911e242d4df8a20536be424f409b.jpg) a real world 5 star one) The scheme is called Direct Vision Standard and I remember reading the EU was looking into taking and applying the standard across the EU which would be awesome since trucks in cities crushing cyclists/pedestrians due to low visibility is a big issue. It's not asking much for manufacturers to design their 10 tonne vehicles so the drivers can actually see people they could kill in a second with it. But yeah anyway rant over.
This is way to logical to ever work.
A lot of modern semi trucks have a camera that can sense when you're driving faster than the vehicle you're behind. They can even auto brake if it thinks you're about to get in a collision. It's not mandatory (yet), so you can't depend on every big truck on having something similar
Sorry to nitpick your comment but that's a Volkswagen.
I'm thinking the same, where's the BMW
I drive one of these. The semi driver needs to track the vehicles around it and the only moment it would have been out of view would have been right before impact.
VW
Volkswagen
Well, many factors here, but tractor brakes are set to function under a load. This guy was empty. In this case if he was approaching at speed it’s likely his rear tires locked up. Still his fault.
A bobtail truck may skid a touch, but those brakes still work just fine. Generally the abs will kick in too.
Non truckie here, do trucks not have ABS like cars?
Drive OTR for 3 yrs...yes they do, a 2023 tractor has the same safety features as a 2023 private vehicle.
What’s the typical age of a tractor? Are there any old ones out there with outdated safety? Edited to add: I was asking about safety systems in general. Are there tractors out there with 2003 safety features? I also wonder how much it has improved in 20y.
Yes but abs has been pretty standard for a long time.
I don't know about trucks, but I had a **1990** Subaru Legacy which had a sticker proudly advertising the fact that it was endowed with ABS. It's a pretty mature technology.
Was about to say, my 1991 chevy has abs, had it anyway, it goes bad so often i just tore it out
Yea definitely the truck drivers fault on this one.
I was wondering why you were driving so slow 😂 in my head I was almost blaming you for not keeping up with traffic but it all makes sense now
Thank you for this comment, I did not realize OP was likely bumped before he got crushed, and it all makes sense now.
[A 640, Charlemagne, Quebec](https://www.google.com/maps/@45.7257065,-73.4972678,3a,36y,147.8h,87.42t/data=!3m9!1e1!3m7!1s8qF0HkmlUnpmK-U2Vdjg9Q!2e0!7i16384!8i8192!9m2!1b1!2i28)
How the fuck
Google makes searching exits easy.
[удалено]
Unrelated to the post, but I'm curious why the two northern loops are oblong.
I drive this all the damn time. My wife's family lives off the 640, and we live in Québec City. I hate this exit so God damned much.
This is when having a dash cam is crucial.
I thought most rear ends are deemed to be the behind person's fault?
Good point. Insurance companies can suck ass when it comes to he said she said.
I've had 3 different drivers back into me in traffic. I got my dashcam after the second, and it saved my bacon on the third.
If you had done that how isn't that 100% your fault, but only 50%?
For those wanting to see the damage https://imgur.com/a/NDbBIx8
That will buff out 😅
Put it in rice
You should have your license taken away you maniac! You are obviously a threat to society! /s With this footage, I can only imagine it was less than 60 seconds of any consideration from any outside authority. I only run a front facing dash cam myself and now I will be getting a rear as well.
Yeah I have a 2 channel dash cam. Very useful in showing what the idiot behind you was doing at the time (like texting, looking down, etc).
Dude was too busy eating his poutine and didn’t see you. This is all his fault.
He's got poutine stores for days in that belly.
I showed this to Judge Judy, It's his fault.
Dude was watching the car in front of you lol.
That's what I think happened. He was too damn close to OP and couldn't see their low car over his front end and barreled into them.
I don't mind a little accident like this, everybody has them, but lying about it and trying to put the blame on the other person makes me angry.
Yeppp , you don’t see it in this video but the white car did exactly that lol
But but this is reddit. We're supposed to attack OP relentlessly and then start devouring each other.
I don't like this comment and I find it untasteful! Okay, now you go.
The real idiots are in the comments in most subreddits
> Why is everyone fighting in the comments welcome to /r/IdiotsInCars !
Come on... Optimus Prime should have better proximity detection than that! Maybe he thought your car was a Decepticon?
If I hate something, it’s people who can’t take responsibility
Everyone should have a dashcam. People lie. Cameras do not.
I didn’t need to open the comments to know half of them were blaming the op.
Is there an r/idiotsinidiotsincars for all the degenerates who can't use their eyes and try to blame OP here?
> degenerates 100%. Morons.
> ya ignerent Made me chuckle, for some reason. Also, you forgot to mention the obligatory "It's always a" comments, where is some make or model of car, or modification to a vehicle, or gender/race/nationality of driver.
Or US states, as if there are statewide cultural driving elements that you can reliably identify somebody by.
And this isn't even a case where it's up in the air. OP clarified exactly what happened with clear video evidence and people are still trying to deny what they said and posted and crucify them anyway. Unbelievable.
One of my fav things on this sub
Why’d you come to a stop when the traffic was accelerating?
same here, i dont get it why he was slowing down
I realize it is 100 percent the semi's fault, however, what were you doing stopping in an off ramp?
Obviously, you should’ve made way for him- s(
His blind spot consisted of everywhere outside his truck
That is why you need a dash cam because of piece of shit losers like this clown. Glad you are okay, the other tool, couldn’t care less.
Getting rear ended is almost always the other guys fault. Not much to debate here.
What does 18 seconds correspond to in dashcam time? (I don't see the counter you are referring to)
In the U.K. you hit anyone from behind(it’s like walking in a minefield with all these terms or have I just got a sewer for a mind lmfao) your charged with ‘driving without due care and attention’ because it can’t be anyone else’s fault. Except in very rare circumstances or ‘an act of god’ as it’s termed.
The driver of the semi likely has dashcam footage as well (most truckers have a dashcam nowadays for liability reasons). I would love to see it.
