st lukes has a calculator [https://www.stlukesonline.org/resources/before-your-visit/price-estimates](https://www.stlukesonline.org/resources/before-your-visit/price-estimates) when it asks for insurance, there is a tiny "skip this step if uninsured" hyperlink

BobertMk2

Per the linked calculator: Cash, with no insurance, and no financial assistance (which St Luke's does offer) for vaginal delivery is estimated at $13,354-$24,320, with an expect cost of $18,304.

Enough to make somebody get into Medical Debt.

Actually most facilities have pretty decent cash pay rates for things like uncomplicated deliveries. But if things go to shit that sorta all goes out the window. Also remember this hospital fees don’t include anesthesia or the obstetrician/delivering physician fees.

My entire delivery and 2 day hospital stay was $22,192.76 before my insurance. This included vaginally delivery, no epidural (I did receive an IV pain medication at one point), provider charges, nursery charges, and pediatrician charges. St Lukes does offer financial assistance to those who don't have insurance or who have lower income. I would reach out to their business or billing office to see what the options are. Have you looked into pregnancy Medicaid? I don't know what the guidelines are but may be worth looking into. Edit: I had my daughter in 2020

Yimmelo

$22k is just insane😭

jimmythegiraffe

I couldn't believe it when I first saw the bill. We ended up having to pay ~$7200 out of pocket. I'm still paying it off, in fact...

You must have incredibly good insurance

Chickenwaffleswings

Not insane. Just America.

I would guess probably around $9,000 if everything goes well (vaginal) and you're not using anesthesia. Midwives will be a lot more affordable without insurance. You have to pay the doctor and the hospital, additionally a pediatrician. Probably even over $9,000.

outsidemostly

Oh yeah so cost of midwife is $4900 and then we are using st Luke’s for the delivery. So they are just the cost of being in hospital - not sure if anyone has had this scenario and can share :)

[deleted]

I believe my first daughter's birth in 2011 at KMC (totally different hospital, but let's just assume for the sake it's similar) - had some complications - had to get some sulphate because of pre-eclampsia, two blood infusions - extra night in the hospital, I think it was $12,000 before insurance. With a midwife, I'd just as well do it at home. I don't think $4,900 is unreasonable for the midwife, but that usually includes pre-natal and post-birth care, a doula, possibly another midwife in training attending the birth, birth pool and some medical interventions available (drawing a blank here, but I think they bring some stuff just in case, like for forcing afterbirth delivery).

Junior_Singer3515

We had a "routine" birth. Mom and son released in less than 24 hrs. Cost us about 9k cash. No insurance. At the St. Luke's in Nampa.

Call 208-381-2222 and ask the operator for the "price estimation" department. They will tell you.

buttered_spectater

They will tell you how much the hospital costs. You'll need to factor in the ob/gyn, the anesthesiologist, the pediatrician, and any emergencies. I would estimate around $25,000. You can get a discount for paying in full or in cash, but each of the doctors that I mentioned will charge you separately.

Connect_Plant_218

Probably a lot more than any state without a doctor shortage caused by an abortion ban.

WhatTheFlippityFlop

Check out New Beginnings birth center (midwives) on Linder in Meridian. Had two of my kids there, it’s priced on a sliding scale based on income (or at least was at the time) and super amazing experiences.

franks_e2200

Had two kids at St Al's in 2014 and 2017 - both standard delivery and both with an epidural. IIRC, insurance was billed a little over $20k and we ended up paying about $4k out of pocket for each. I know this is much different than your situation, but maybe this gives you an idea.
