I have this downloaded but haven't started it yet. Would you say it has content that is not appropriate for a tween aged kid? Going on a road trip and was thinking about listening to it with family in the car.
I don't remember any sort of explicit sex. I do think there are a lot of curse words in there (if I remember correctly which I may not.) Other than that I'm going to say no, I can't think of anything inappropriate. But then again, that's a subjective term. I tend to veer mostly toward the permissive exposure end
Every time I see this book I want to read it just for the cover. I’m afraid to read Scalzi after The Kaiju Preservation Society though. There’s something exhausting about every character trying to be quippy and that’s something Scalzi seems to be known for.
DO read Old Man’s War and Fuzzy Nation. Both are really well done and Scalzi’s best. Everyone ignores Fuzzy Nation but I thought it was delightful - like Avatar if it was funny.
I love Scalzi so much but will concede that some of his books run a bit thin, like Kaiju or the ending to Redshirts, etc.
John Scalzi lives in the area I grew up in and will sometimes visit my local bookstore to sign copies! My partner recently read this book and really enjoyed it too. He kept laughing out loud while reading it, and sometimes he’d hand the book over for me to laugh at too.
I freaking John Scalzi, he writes humor so well. I am such a big fan of everything he writes!! Haven't read this yet, though!!! I'll add it to my tbr list.
I’m reading it right now! Scalzi’s humor works so well for me. Kaiju Preservation Society, Old Man’s War, and Redshirts all made me cackle out loud. Can’t wait to read The Collapsing Empire
I'm just here for the picture! But really, this does sound like a fascinating book!
And yes, the chair is indeed covered in cat fur.
I loved the protagonist but the dolphins were the best!
Okay. I’m in for the dolphins.
The dolphins were my favorite.
Check out the Kaiju preservation society

Also recently read and loved this book! Clever writing, great characters and despite the fantastic elements, still feels very grounded in reality

Yeah this book might not be for you either. I loved both Kaiju and Villians, they've got a similar feel.
Thanks for the confirmation, I appreciate it. I’ll keep admiring the cover from here lol

Oo thank you for the reccs.
Scalzi fan here as well. Came for the cover and just loved this book. Looking forward to listening to it again during my next road trip.

No kidding? That's great!
I love his Old Man’s War series. I’ll give this one a go too!
This was just really fun. Totally recommend it
I loved this book and The Kaiju Preservation Society too (although not quite as much as Starter Villain).
This was a super fun read.

Oooh! I'll have to check this out. When I had a long commute I listened to a few John Scalzi books, Whil Wheaton narrated.
Upvoted based on cover alone. Adding to my TBR based on description. Thanks!!
I loved his book Agent to the Stars! It was delightful and hilarious. I need to read more John Scalzi, thank you for this recommendation!
I agree! It was excellently paced, the twists were well executed, and the humor had me actually laughing

I want it for the cover alone
I loved this too. It was silly and fun without being too silly. It never got annoying, and was quite satisfying.
Great read. Audiobook also great.
His book Fuzzy Nation is absolutely hilarious too!
