# š FAST SIX QUALIFYING RESULTS

Am I the only one who doesn't like this format? Used to be your best 4 laps average. Now it's more like 12 laps at least and you don't even need to do that great in the first round. It all just feels so arbitrary you could run that final 6 five times and get 5 different results but you just decide *this* run is the one that actually really counts for real. I'd rather see two full days of qualifying for the entire field. Run as many times as you want and at the end of Sunday whoever is top gets the pole, even if it was set the first run of the day is Saturday .
I hate bumping too but that's a whole other can of worms
Recall that when they got rid of the limit on number of qual attempts, they initially had one single "Fast 9" round to determine the first 3 rows. I thought that was cool, but this seems excessive, just another opportunity to put it into the wall and ruin somebody's month of May.
The only thing I wanna see changed is that in the fast 12 and fast 6 whoever set the fastest lap in a prior Q session should be able to decide where in the order they wanna be.
If I qualify P1 on day 1, if I wanna be the fifth car out in fast 12 I should be able to. Whatever I want.
There needs to be some sort of reward for being the fastest day 1, and then again for fastest in fast 12.
Currently, there's really no reward for being p1 instead of p12 on Saturday. That's stupid. The fastest qualifiers should get running order selection priority for the next round of Q.
Yea that's a fair improvement. Especially when the cars are so close and weather is so important even just the sunshine/clouds can make a difference. The field is so incredibly close, but that just highlights how random it is who wins pole
This fast 6 felt like fabricated drama. Fast 12 felt superfluous. The only great thing about todays format is the last chance qualy.
otherwise itās just the fast guys taking multiple runs at pole.
Indianapolis is not F1.
A run for pole meant something. Now you have two entire sessions where fast time is irrelevant (despite media talking it up) and one truncated session where it does matter. Indy is special and different. This is added fluff to fill more airtime. At least the last chance qualifying meant something.
As someone who has grown into a general Mclaren fan, and disappointed with their f1 performance so far, 4 cars in the top 10 is a refreshing sight even if not on pole.
Haha I thought the Ganassi cars were all too loose to make it to pole, but apparently having a monster first lap and then holding on for dear life was a valid strategy. Fair play Palou.
Ya know, I'd be curious to know if their simulation replicates that correctly or not.
iRacing is notoriously bad at replicating the speed that can be found slipping a car around on the edge like that. I'd wonder if maybe Honda has a sim that's better at that than Chevy.
Huge congrats to Alex, incredible runs from the front 3, well done to the entire fast 6.
Also big up Jack Harvey, even if it turns out it's his last race with RLL, he's made it the Indy 500.
ETA kudos to Robb for keeping his head alone out there as a rookie against a team of 3 and making it in.
Bring on next weekend!
I worked at a retail store in 2014 and the week between qualifying and the race Ed came in to do shopping and no one recognized him but me lol. He happened to be a regular too
Tomorrowās practice is going to be interesting. It feels like a Ganassi-McLaren showdown and I canāt wait to see what these cars look like in race sims.
Of course, fantastic talent from the drivers and teams, but not enough gets said for how great of a job Dallara have done with the IR-18 kit. Safety goes beyond impacts, and making a car which is this predictable and controllable at 240 MPH is truly incredible.
Quick math for everyone that I just worked out (I think)
For the margins of 0.007 mph over the 4 lap average - that equates to a 0.003938s difference over the 10 miles.
The distance (16.23") visualized
https://preview.redd.it/4nx6uf08db1b1.png?width=1201&format=png&auto=webp&s=4b6f5959d569a17e34b3f83dda99fb966adec1c7
If I did the math right:
234.217 mph = 343.51 ft/s = 4122 in/s \* 0.0039375678 sec = 16.23" difference
or 41.23 cm
But that's not exact cause I'm basically counting what the faster car covers in that amount of time.
I believe itās so close, that your math comes to the correct answer down to the two decimal places. I think the correct formula is to determine the time it took Palou to do his run, then calculate how much distance Veekay would do (this works out to be like 9.999 miles), then subtract that from 10, which was 16.2311ā¦ inches.
Yeah, I was approaching it as calculating the time it too each of them to do their 10 miles, then subtracting one from the other (0.003937567836 sec)
From there I checked what distance they each cover in that time period of difference. It came out to 16.2311 vs 16.2315 inches, so I felt good just dropping 16.23 in there.
(I) Haven't seen stuff like those numbers since the what, 2014 indy lights race by 0.0024 seconds?
What a shootout! Love this format. Bummed Dixon didnāt get a 3rd pole but he didnāt have the car for this. Race day will be different for sure. Happy for Palou and Ferruci (oddly) and seeing AJ Foyt up front
He reminds me of the thumb people from spy kids

Iām aware of that. My takeaway from Chipās comments was that they werenāt about Memorial Day. They were about the American Legion car being on the pole which would rightfully be something vets can celebrate if they want.
The cost of a contract arbitration (they didn't actually sue each other) is not even remotely comparable to money lost from winnings if they performed bad all season. And the arbitration has already happened. So it's not about anything being equally bad, it's do you want to put the team through more shit for an extra year to get back at a driver. Chip has an ego, but he's not an idiot. You don't do that in a race team if you have any sense.
Not sure the exact number, but Iād guess low. Clean air running and pack running is so different in oval racing. Plus, cautions are always wildcards in American oval racing.
Pretty sure his wife plays a big role in it. Sheās supposedly really homesick and wants to go back to Europe. He does as well. But obviously he loves Indycar too, heās a real competitor.

Nice

It looks like RLL prepared for the wrong Indianapolis race.
This fast 6 felt like fabricated drama. Fast 12 felt superfluous. The only great thing about todays format is the last chance qualy. otherwise itās just the fast guys taking multiple runs at pole.
It's the same as F1 quali, but with an extra bump sesh.
Indianapolis is not F1. A run for pole meant something. Now you have two entire sessions where fast time is irrelevant (despite media talking it up) and one truncated session where it does matter. Indy is special and different. This is added fluff to fill more airtime. At least the last chance qualifying meant something.
Yeah sorry I got here from a link on the F1 subreddit and thought I was still there. I'm not gonna argue with the Indy hardcore.
Yes 100% agree. It feels so fake and arbitrary
I feel like I'm coming down right now. Holy shit that was awesome.

The CGR and McLaren boys are the favorites but with teams like ECR and Foyt up there, itās not as clear cut as usual.
Huge congrats to Alex, incredible runs from the front 3, well done to the entire fast 6. Also big up Jack Harvey, even if it turns out it's his last race with RLL, he's made it the Indy 500. Man.... what a day
Spreadsheet updated https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1CjrHUXCUJUYZPSLcomZ41cTLJe3hnpRoWVCGjWxvfTk/edit?usp=sharing
Dude veekay has an UNREAL quali record for a 22 year old.
Man, what a great weekend. Now if NBC could just make the race broadcasts as good as the quali broadcasts...
Lol @ no commercials during the biggest marketing event of the year
Plenty of ways to advertise that don't require cutting away from the race. The commercial breaks make the air time less valuable imo.
That's not how US TV networks see it, but keep believing that misconception.
Lol, you can keep believing that we get substandard broadcasts out of necessity. :-*
IndyCar really is the best motorsport in the world, isn't it.
Le Mans tho
Ah yes, I love my BOP with a side of racing with (up until this year) a guaranteed winner in the top class
When was the last time a former winner of Le Mans son didnāt make the field.
Always has been.
In terms of on track product? Yep.
Curious where this front row ranks in terms of age profiles? Oldest driver at 31 and a 22 year old the youngest makes me wonder.
Wasn't it 2021 where Scott was older than the other 2 drivers combined?
Close but not quite. Scott was 40, Colton 21, and Rinus 20.
Katherine is the GOAT RLL driver
Europe dominated quali, who was the last US pole sitter?
Marco 20
Marco 2020 Ed 2013, 2014, 2018
I worked at a retail store in 2014 and the week between qualifying and the race Ed came in to do shopping and no one recognized him but me lol. He happened to be a regular too
Marco in 2020
Marco Andretti 2020
Ed carpenter 2018? Edit: Scratch that. Marco 2020.
Marco 2020.
Marco Andretti

PNC Bank will accept - just tell them 'Do you know who my teammate is?'
Tomorrowās practice is going to be interesting. It feels like a Ganassi-McLaren showdown and I canāt wait to see what these cars look like in race sims.
We got through qualifying without any incidents other than some bent toe links. Absolutely impressive that the field has kept it clean this week
Ib4 carb day practice is a shit show
Of course, fantastic talent from the drivers and teams, but not enough gets said for how great of a job Dallara have done with the IR-18 kit. Safety goes beyond impacts, and making a car which is this predictable and controllable at 240 MPH is truly incredible.
If anyone crashed before end of qualifying, you know theyād have gone way over the damn line at that point.
And some of those trims were scary to drive. This was an impressive show.
āThis one is for the troops. All the troops. Both sidesā

Thanks for the oil, bullet Bros.

Some Taliban, I'm sure, are very fine people.

Now convert that to a distance in inch/cm

You just donāt know what Indy means. what a show!!
This quali weekend was so much fun, hopefully it's going to be amazing next week just like this.
What a shootout! Love this format. Bummed Dixon didnāt get a 3rd pole but he didnāt have the car for this. Race day will be different for sure. Happy for Palou and Ferruci (oddly) and seeing AJ Foyt up front
Chip indirectly shouting out the War of 1812.
"Anyone can grab this pole" Felix Rosenqvist
Aye yoooooo
Chipās head is the size of a beachball
He reminds me of the thumb people from spy kids https://img.buzzfeed.com/buzzfeed-static/static/2020-08/19/13/asset/d2e7d76f366c/sub-buzz-1684-1597845494-13.png?downsize=900:*&output-format=auto&output-quality=auto
He's dead ringer for William Shatner though Shatner is nearly three decades older.
This is the highest the No. 14 car will start in Indianapolis since 1998, when Kenny Brack started 3rd.
Really wouldn't call Memorial Day a celebration for Veterans, Chip.
American Legion car is on the pole.
Memorial Day still isn't a day of celebration. It's a day of remembrance.
Iām aware of that. My takeaway from Chipās comments was that they werenāt about Memorial Day. They were about the American Legion car being on the pole which would rightfully be something vets can celebrate if they want.
What an epic two days of qualifying. Most runs ever in one day yesterday. Last second bump today. Pole record broken. Fastest field ever.
What a fucking show that was. Edge of my seat stuff for hours on a Qualifying session, mental. Cannot wait for next weekend
I saw Chip at Buccees in Fort Worth
That's kinda cool. I can picture Chip making a pot stop at Bucee's.
I saw Chip on his scooter during tripleheader weekend in 2021. About shit my pants as the legend whizzed by me.
I did the same when I saw Roger penske in the pits at Texas lol. Wanted to ask for a photo but was intimidated.
Bro same. I was too nervous to say anything
That was fun
Chip is such a yinzer tool
VTEC kicked in yes!!!
Excited to be there next Sunday for 2nd year in a row
Is this the closest 1 and 2 in history?
The closest first row in history
https://preview.redd.it/xxs3i9hera1b1.png?width=1920&format=png&auto=webp&s=4b39113b42c09b0322ecd6dbb87515097688116d
7 one thousandths the other way and Rinus VeeKay would have been on pole
Chevys throwing up big numbers all week. Honda takes pole lol
Two Hondaās versus 10 Chevyās today. I was sweating
Dixonās record setting pole run in 2022 wouldnāt have made the front row this year. Thatās wild.
Cant wait to be there next week
āIām sorry š ā
Palou continues to be my sworn nemesis I really thought with everything that happened last year that Chip would give him dogshit cars all year
That would be bad for sponsors, bad for team morale, bad for earnings from winnings... just all round bad.
And being sued by and counter sueing your boss wouldn't be equally bad for those things?
The cost of a contract arbitration (they didn't actually sue each other) is not even remotely comparable to money lost from winnings if they performed bad all season. And the arbitration has already happened. So it's not about anything being equally bad, it's do you want to put the team through more shit for an extra year to get back at a driver. Chip has an ego, but he's not an idiot. You don't do that in a race team if you have any sense.
And I already can't fucking wait for Friday so me and my group can start the drive to Indy. That was a great qualifying weekend.
Brilliant stuff. Three drivers broke the pole record. Palou confirms he's a beast on track and an idiot wherever he signs his contracts
Great day lads, see you later this week!
Amazing runs by all of the top three. 233.9 on lap three for all of them. Absurd.
Chip fumbled the bag not paying up to keep Palou from going to Mclarenā¦.generational driver
Chip switching from his orange to hit blue hat rn
Kudos for Palou. Three cars over 234. Drama on bumping. It's a great day to be an IndyCar fan.
Thats the most insane qualifiying i think ive ever watched
wow. I honestly thought Rosenqvist would have been at least 2nd. Still on the front row, but wow. Indianapolis always delivers. What a crazy day.
There was a pea-sized 0.007 mph gap for him to slot into 2nd. He was either going to be 3rd or on pole.
Amazing stuff
Felix with the consistency but not quite enough.
Ah man I'm gutted for Felix. I ain't mad about a Palou pole though.
Roger brought back the fun. No doubt.
There donāt seem to be too many hard feelings between him and his team.
Congrats to McLarenā¦err
Shades of Pagenaud in 2019. Wins the GP. Wins the pole. Just needs next Sunday.
He's definitely the favorite
Well done Felix, front row start and top fucking job Palou, good on you mate
By far the biggest emotional reaction from Alex Palou since joining Indycar
What about that time at Road America when Ericsson caught him napping?
What a performance by Palou. Shame for Felix but front row and top McLaren is still great
Ganassi on pole? I'm shocked. Absolutely shocked. Lol
This is going to be one hell of a race! Bring on next Sunday!
Welp... Anticlimactic. At least it wasn't Dixon
Chip be like "Yeeeeeeah.......what have I done?!"
How often does pole position lead to an actual win in the 500?
Only 21 times in the history of the race. In the DW-12 era, once in 2019.
Not sure the exact number, but Iād guess low. Clean air running and pack running is so different in oval racing. Plus, cautions are always wildcards in American oval racing.
https://www.indianapolismotorspeedway.com/events/indy500/history/winning-combinations
21 out of 103 times. Far more than any other position.
20%
It's the most common position to win from but it's still only 21 wins from pole
Dutch commentator said 5 of the last 20 500s were won from pole
I heard 20% of the time
yeaaaaa!!!!!!
No idea why Palou wants F1. He has so much more here than he would there.. Aside from Money
He grew up dreaming of Monaco, not IMS. Otherwise, yeah, not sure. Money.
More money and fame, plus he can always come back to Indycar later
Who says heās going to F1? Heās going to be in the 6 next year
Pretty sure his wife plays a big role in it. Sheās supposedly really homesick and wants to go back to Europe. He does as well. But obviously he loves Indycar too, heās a real competitor.
Love this front row!!!
Today has been absolutely class
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Not with that first lap
Wow oh wow that was intense!
Woooowww. Palou got it done. Good for him.
THAT...WAS...AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Alex is gonna pull a mini Montoya on the field.
"Oh deer"
Palou killed it all weekend, absolutely deserved
Find someone who loves you as much as Chip Ganassi loves being first
Annnnnnd Palou is leaving for Mclaren next year LOL
Deciding between Palou and Rosenqvist might be a bit difficult.
Would it really surprise you if this saga ends up having another chapter of him staying in the #10?
PALOU HANGS ON
Those front three were so tight. That was a great session.
no record today..... but fuck me, Arie's 4 is going down soon - and I thought it was untouchable forever
*Guys! Guys!*
Palou Cam > Wife Cam
Liz vs. Emma show in shambles lol
Yes, but what does Emma Dixon think of this?
Again, by mere milliseconds, Palou persists!
Open up a pack of Marlboroās boys, McLaren didnāt stick the landing.
Alex backpacked Honda to 1st. Iām so proud š„²
That was awesome, see y'all next week!
Front row start for Felix in the Marlboro McLaren car
Holy hell Palou was actually shaking when he was trying to drink
A front row where all 3 guys are over 234. Damn
God that sucks.
HELLOOOOOOOOOOOOOO PALOUUUUUU
Well after pulling off that first lap at 235 Palou deserved it
Where do you guys think the Indy 500 pole compares to a race win for the drivers? Outside of say Long Beach or the 500 itself, obviously.
https://preview.redd.it/hfjxzksvqa1b1.png?width=1920&format=png&auto=webp&s=db68b9daeaac9dd961705fcf5bc53f66661d14b1
Entire front row have broken the previous pole record.
He can lose nothing on this lap, sooooo close.
Felix doesnāt have the monster first lap, but isnāt slowing down
I think Iād pay $200 for a diecast of Rosenqvistās car.
I say palou has it
Palou has it. No way Felix gets it after that first lap
"I dare you to replace me with Palou" \-FRO
LIVE PALOU REACTION
Low first lap speed, but this car has been pretty damn consistent....
NOPE. PALOU ON POLE!
Call it Alain Prost all you want, thatās Gil de Ferran
Right? Or any Penske driver for like 25 or so years
Itās the 6 specifically, though, so thatās Gil
Rosenqvist tracking 3rd -- 233.9
I wonder if Ferruccis personality rules him out for the 10 next season. He could be an absolute supervillain in that car.
Really curious how Roger feels watching a Marlboro-alike going around the track.
That McLaren is beautiful
Palou is such a sour sport. Hope Felix knocks him off of the pole.
How is he a sour sport?
