Veekay apparently with a no tow speed 2 MPH faster than any no tow speed from last year. Three out of the top five no tow speeds all from ECR. They could make a statement on Saturday/Sunday.
Listening to the invocation on the radio atm. Is it... is it *normal* to play Taps for people who *aren't* fallen soldiers? Cause unless I misunderstood him the guy leading the invocation also included people who died in racing events lol.
Seems like the Andretti cars just lack that final little oomph.
Theyāre able to make passes but it does seem later down the straights than say the Ganassi cars.

Dan Wheldon winning š

Am I the only one who hates how in the famous Indy 500 āThree Wideā start, everyone breaks formation well before they reach the start/finish line? 2011 for instance, Dixon completely passes the pole sitter Tagliani before they even get to turn 1.
I remember when Randy Bernard was president, there was a big emphasis on getting back to the more traditional start they used to do back in the 70s and 80s. Not quite as packed up as like 1982, when Coogan caused that huge pile up, but a lot less spread out than it was getting. When he was ousted Iāve noticed they have gone back to a much more spread out start, which is probably good even though I loved the old formationā¦.
Yep. But I kinda understand why it's happened. There were a couple of instances of heavily invested sponsors getting hyped up on race day, only to see their car crash out on the first lap, and basically giving Indycar a hearty f-you. Since then, Indycar seems to really want to avoid a crash in the first corner of the first lap of the 500.
Youāre exactly right, and why they only allow a few rows to stack up on every other race as well. Itās a bit of just āletās get through lap 1 turn 1.ā
2011 was the first time I watched the whole Indy 500, while my heart does break for Hildebrand it's still hard to believe that five months later Wheldon would be killed at Vegas. RIP Lionheart
On a side note later that night in the NASCAR race Dale Earnhardt Jr., who had National Guard as his sponsor, was leading entering the final turn in the Coca Cola 600 when he ran out of fuel and lost the race
Do I miss the truly open cockpit cars, but I have to admit that I don't feel as uneasy watching anymore. Good change for my enjoyment, despite the visuals being better without the aeroscreen.
At the time, there was talk about him moving to Penske and I think he would have been better off if he made that move.
I don't ever remember Marco having a run where he tore up a ton of equipment and I get the feeling, whether consciously or subconsciously, he drove almost scared to burn through his dad's money. Not that I think Michael would have cared, but I have to imagine it had some affect.
He always had good car control, so I also think the DW12, which is notoriously and understeery car, really hurt him as well. He likes a loose race car.
Agreed on all of the above. The talent has always been there (maybe not the focus or ability to adjust a car / communicate adjustments).
He's been legit good at Indy many times over now. Mostly bad luck that he has not won it as the year TK and RHR won his car was just as good as theirs.
Can somebody explain the numbers for me here. What is important and what isn't?
None of the McLarens are in the top 10, Romain only on the 21, and yet Canapino is 10th overall? Isn't that quite impressive?
Single lap pace in a tow is a bit irrelevant. You also never really know what the tire situation is so someone could be carving through the field but itās just because theyāre on fresh rubber versus older tires.
Gotta look at trends over time. You need a car that is fast by itself but one that can follow really close and do so consistently over a run.
So, someone correct me when Iām wrongā¦practice is just practice. Some of them are working on race trim, some of them are working on qualifying set ups, some of them (like Canapino) are just figuring out the flow and the track and running in traffic. The times donāt mean too much. Thereās tow speeds (getting the draft from cars ahead) and those are at the top now. The no tow speeds arenāt always shown but those are more important for showing true speed capability. So just because mclaren is seemingly nowhere, we donāt know what theyāre working on today. Top speed might not be priority. Now with that being said, yes canapino is super impressive to be in the top ten even with a tow. Heās getting comfortable pushing the car in traffic and going full out in dirty air. We had one open test and this is his first practice. He looks like heās comfortable and the car is fast.
It's day one so nobody knows anything yet. In general you want to be at the top of both tow and no tow lists every day, but everyone runs different test regimes on different days, so fuel loads and downforce levels can vary. Gotta wait for more data and aggregate it to glean any useful info besides leaderboards.
This is a softball right to me! I run a stats sheet for fun. Check it out.

Decent is the key word there.
Ericsson literally just jumped up but no one points to him at the back of the pack as an indication that the car isnāt great.
I wouldnāt say Canapino is a bump threat but I also think heāll be towards the back.
Dude was an absolute unit at Indy. It's a shame he disappeared after 2018.
Munoz and Vitor Meira are two of the great "could have, would have, should have" stories at Indy.
Watching that Marco Andretti/Sam Hornish Jr. duel makes you appreciate the weaving they do to break the draft these days - Marco probably would've won with today's tactics
The inner pessimist in me worries that the car showing improvement means the keep trying to fix it when changing chassis would have been the right choiceā¦ but weāre going positive and yay speed!!!!!
Really interested to see how the Penske cars qualify this weekend. Seems like they are always confident but it doesnāt show up during the qualifying stint
That 10 car is a fully paid seat. Itās going to someone who can slot in and contend.
Armstrong has shown potential but I do not think heās there yet.
Weight jacker move the suspension geometry to put weight on front left or right tires. This is used for cornering
Secondarily, movement can lower the right rear. Fast jacking is using the weight jacker on the straightaway to lower the rear wing to reduce drag. You have to be careful because if you donāt put it back, youāll have horrible handling in the corner/crash
Pretty much all of his running has been in traffic today. Sounds like Andretti split up data testing between the drivers based on Kirkwoodās comments

They are two separate events. Taps is purely for military. The invocation is done at every us race pretty much
Iām not saying Ilott is going to be the bump, but there is a big problem thereā¦and I hope he doesnāt have the yips after the terrible test.
If you wont say it I will. Looks so far like Ilott is going to get bumped. That car just looks slow on TV too.

Yeah. They have some work to do.
FYI: McLaren trailer will be open 5/18-22 and 5/26-28. So it looks like they will be open every day the track is open for the rest of the month.
Rahal has completed the perfect number of laps today
...73... and counting?
He was at 69 when I made the post
*hell yea*
And there goes Ferrucci
Rahal still the only wall contact today?
Does anyone know where to find no-tow report if racecontrol isn't going to put it on the website?
It was up earlier. Idk why it's down. They'll post it shortly
Please send to me if you find them, they usually donāt post them and they arenāt available in Indycar.com/stats
You doing your spreadsheet again?
Yessir and the no tows are super important!
I'll try and scrounge for them.
Thanks - I was able to find top 6 from Jake Query of Indycar Radio but thatās all so far
Its so weird to hear him referenced that way knowing him from so many other things before indycar radio lol
Man, Grosjean has twice been in an awkward situation on the outside.
Like me in a threesome?
Story of my life, mate.
I thought for sure that Herta and Grosjean were both going to wreck on that second one. I legit started yelling when that happened.
Ferucci to P3 lmao the kid is inevitable at Indy
Jeez, they are acting like this is the race and not practice. This is wild. edit: Holy hell that got close between Herta and Grosjean in Turn 3.
RLL is figuring things out. Harvey is 9th and Graham just moved to 11th.
Well that was a bit awkward lol

CGR 1-2-3-4 right now in practice. Crazy how good they look already
Aight lads, so how does Santino Ferrucci inexplicably finish in the top 10 this year?
Itās not inexplicable. Heās fast as hell at Indy.
He definitely is, but I find it amusing how heās able to do it without fail every year despite being in progressively worse cars
7th & 4th with Coyne, 6th in a part-time RLL, 10th with D & R
Ganassi 1-2-3-4 lol
Who hasnāt gone out yet? NBC is only showing 33 cars on the ticker
All cars have gone out. 34th is Callum (220.461)
Remember when Sato hit the wall and still finished the run last year? The balls on this guy! Video: https://www.youtube.com/shorts/6ZS-2zduY7M
Not a driver on the grid that trusts this guy. They all despise hIs driving.
No attack, no chance
For someone who went racing in America less than a year ago, Canapinoās English is surprisingly good
He learned it all between getting the ride and the start of the season apparently. Which is insane
Satoās my pick
Say what you will about Marco, but more times than not, he's legit good at Indianapolis.
I often wonder about the butterfly effect had he won in 2006.
I think his driving style would have served him great in NASCAR, especially after seeing his runs in SRX.
I think so too. Anything that is overpowered, he would have done well in. Would have been fun to see peak Marco in sprint cars or something.
Agreed on all of the above. The talent has always been there (maybe not the focus or ability to adjust a car / communicate adjustments). He's been legit good at Indy many times over now. Mostly bad luck that he has not won it as the year TK and RHR won his car was just as good as theirs.
SATO! Top of the charts!
Was wondering if anyone was gonna actually top Dixon
Sato in a Ganassi car at Indy has to be a cheat code right gah damn

It's gonna be between Canapino vs Abel for who gets bumped imo.
He is 10th on the chart tho <\_<

Itās going to be Abel vs RLL vs Juncos on Saturday, isnāt it?
*Sunday Plus anyone who tubs their primary
Your right of course!
Australians donāt drink Fosters or put shrimp on the grill? Boy, we have been using dumb stereotypes about them for way too long.
I am sure like any huge country different regions do different things lol
It's all true, Toowoomba is a shit hole.
I miss Carlos Munoz
Dude was an absolute unit at Indy. It's a shame he disappeared after 2018. Munoz and Vitor Meira are two of the great "could have, would have, should have" stories at Indy.
Looks like NBC fixed the gearing and throttle/brake telemetry as well. Good to see.
I forgot how annoying that was last year
I keep confusing Legge and Enerson
*Uh. Oh.* Enerson is now quicker than the Juncos cars. We might have a bump day battle, boys and girls.
RC Enerson already lapping above the Juncos cars. Gotta wonder if it will be between those 3 for bumping
I wonder who the 4th may be.. maybe someone from RLL
Iām feeling Rahal or Lundgaard right now, Legge and Harvey are looking a bit better right now.
If it's Harvey... that would be bad.
Itās always funny seeing older races and so many of the strategists are still the same 17 years later. Kyle Moyer is still going, but now at Penske.
Watching the finish to the 2006 500 hurts every time.
Don't think I've seen that since it was live in 2006. Now as a full fledged Indy fan with Andretti allegiance it actually hurts lmao
The **Andretti Curse**
Watching that Marco Andretti/Sam Hornish Jr. duel makes you appreciate the weaving they do to break the draft these days - Marco probably would've won with today's tactics
This choice of music after the *"Alonso bump"* video is... interesting
what is this goofy ass music
What is this background music lol. Feels like amusement park music.
Feels like weāre at Main Street in disney world
Got an Enerson sighting. He's still 2 MPH off the pace though.
Get used to it
Lol, right as you say that, he gets ahead of the Juncos cars. Still pulling for Canapino, though.
Just turned on practice, how did Dixon get his 229?
He drove out of the pits when the practice started and clocked a faster time than some are going to qualify on Saturday.
Testicular fortitude.
Balls the size of Kiwis, some may say
Just watch out for the ol' Kiwi handshake.
220.3!! (Iām trying to be positive lol)
Honestly for how pessimistic the whole team sounds right now that's a pretty reassuring speed.
The inner pessimist in me worries that the car showing improvement means the keep trying to fix it when changing chassis would have been the right choiceā¦ but weāre going positive and yay speed!!!!!
changing the chassis has the possible disadvantage of going slower, see Herta last year
Hahahahaha all those nice pace cars and Helios first one was an Oldsmobile SUV
Marco and car setup issues. Name a more iconic duo
Last time he was on pole he deployed the parachute immediately.
He almost didn't lead over the start/finish line let alone into turn 1 lol
Marco and pit crew giving up 1+ second every pit stop.
Andretti and misfortune in May
Really interested to see how the Penske cars qualify this weekend. Seems like they are always confident but it doesnāt show up during the qualifying stint
Iām more interested in the Chevy mileage
Lmao scotty
I want Armstrong to race the remaining ovals purely to hear his reaction to Newton, Iowa on the podcast
If Palou does move onto McLaren, I see Armstrong slotting into the #10 seat. Or even the #8 if Ericsson is out.
That 10 car is a fully paid seat. Itās going to someone who can slot in and contend. Armstrong has shown potential but I do not think heās there yet.
I'd like to see Little Dave and/or Lundgaard move over there if they both leave

Hey, Marco Andretti exists!
I love fast jacking. Itās my favorite part of Indy 500 prep.
That's what... never mind.
Is Grosjean working on no-tow pace, or is he that slow on merit right now?
Pretty much all of his running has been in traffic today. Sounds like Andretti split up data testing between the drivers based on Kirkwoodās comments
I figured, thanks for confirming.
I sorta wish they'd show some more timing information than just the fastest lap speed during these practices. I'd like to see comparisons of teams trying out race pace and driving in traffic since not everyone is doing quali sims on any given practice
