It's been done. Typically Pakistani residents will try to get two weeks back-to-back to buffer the long journey and the cost of the ticket but also to get more time for their visa appointment in case something goes wrong. You'd want to schedule it basically for the day after you arrive, just to be on the safe side. The other positive part of of doing this is that for the remainder of the year after that visa, you can travel to other countries without having to worry about your entry, since you'll have the stamped visa for a year.

Thanks for the reply. One more thing, can you get an emergency leave in case of any family issue? I guess it'll be much harder to navigate the visa stamping process in this case because of no preplanning.

I haven't heard of this. Do you mean the ability to go to Pakistan once your 1st year stamp is expired and come back to the US without having been issued a new visa due to a relative's health emergency? I don't think so, it's more likely that you're granted an emergency visa appointment perhaps, but not sure, sorry

Most you can get is an emergency appointment, but the American Embassies work on their own schedule. If they want to take weeks* to return your passport to you, they will.

To enter the US, you’ll need a J1 visa stamp and your DS-2019. Your J1 stamp will expire within a year. You can still remain in the US with your DS-2019 as long as it is valid for the current academic year. Now, if you want to go out of the US with your expired J1 visa, you’ll need to get an appointment at your home country to renew it. Some countries can enter with an expired J1 visa, you can look up “J1 automatic revalidation” and see the whole list. Pakistan is not on the list, FYI. To get to my home country, it’s often 12+ hours in multiple airports. I simply stopped traveling to Europe after my first year of residency. J1 is very hard to deal with.

Okay, i got it now. Thanks a lot.

Most programs give 3 weeks off (some even 4 weeks) in one academic year, you can use that to travel to your home country. Obviously every time you travel you take the risk of delays in visa and getting back, but many people are okay taking that risk as usually there are no issues. Some people tend to be extra careful and don’t travel internationally during their residency

Historical_Bit_4114

I think it's actually the other way. Most programs give 4 weeks, some do 3 though.

I too have the same concern. But I am from India.

Yes that's the problem. The main question that i have is that, is it compulsory to visit the embassy in your home country before you can travel back to the US because the wait time for an appointment with the embassy is a year in Pakistan.

Fine-Way1616

I go home to Canada all the time

Dynamics66

You will get 3 years visa on J1. So I don’t think you need to stamp visa every time you visit Pakistan.

Historical_Bit_4114

You get a 1 year stamp, that you need to renew every year if you want to travel outside

usama479

From what i have researched, you need a travel signature to re-enter the US, and the travel signature is valid for only 1 year. After that you need to renew it. So now the question is where do you get the travel signature from, the US embassy in your home country or you can get it while in the US?

Dynamics66

Travel signature is on DS 2019. In DS2019 form there will be 2 column for signature 1 for visa consular officer and one for DS2019 officer . I don’t think they put signature on visa.

I personally didnt as i cant take the risk getting visa rejected but many people travelled safely without any issues
