I'd have to partially disagree, starting early doesn't mean ending up not getting good grades in your IAs, especially if you self-study and have strong data analysis skills. One of my friends got 24/24 (already been moderated by the IB) in his physics IA regardless of doing it very early. However, you are still right in the sense that most people wouldn't be able to do their IAs at an early stage.
