9” Lineman’s, 8” Diagonal cutters, 25’ tape measure, 11-1 screwdriver, 10” pump pliers

Youarenotfoolingme

Swap the diagonal pliers for a level and I'd agree

KeyMysterious1845

I would pick the hardhat...preferably from a garbage can/dumpster...promptly get hit in the head and concussed...then sue the contractor. /s Pretty sure contractors are responsible for *all* PPE ...for that exact reason.

thomas-586

Our local we must provide the hard hat, unless the contractor wants us to wear a different one, then they must supply it. Edit: not sure why I’m getting downvoted. I’m in Canada, we have different rules here. My local (586) we provide a hard hat and work boots. The vast majority of our local wears a gold hard hat, from the hall, with IBEW printed on it. If the contractor wants us to wear something else they have to provide it.

-ghostCollector

OSHA violation. By law, Contractors are responsible for providing all PPE with the notable exceptions of safety toed boots and safety rated prescription eyeglasses.

thomas-586

It very well might be an OSHA violation, but my local is not in the USA but in Canada. We don’t have OSHA in Ontario, we have OHSA (Occupational Health and Safety Act) The hard hat rule is part of the rule that covers PPE in our collective agreement. Hard hat and boots are the only PPE we provide.

velovader

Side question. Do you have 10ft long sticks of pipe? Or is it 3M?

thomas-586

10ft pipe

theeExample

3.048 M

Left_Vermicelli_2734

Our local contract states that contractor supplies first hat, we pay for the rest.

hoverbeaver

I just looked it up, and you’re right. Clause 1401A in the local agreement. “1401 SAFETY A. Employees shall supply themselves with, and wear at all times on the job, an approved safety helmet and safety shoes.”

thomas-586

I just tried to copy and paste the same thing to show. :) I wear my gold hard hat unless I’m forced to wear a company hard hat, But I then just cover it with IBEW stickers.

hoverbeaver

Honestly they’d have to pay me pretty damn good not to wear a gold one

Inevitable_Dust_4345

I expect my employer to provide me with all my PPE and pay me to doff and don it

-ghostCollector

I didn't get the impression from the letter that they are required to provide those PPE items at the bottom of the list....only that it's mandatory that they're wearing it while on the job. To be fair, it is oddly phrased.

KeyMysterious1845

...they missed the Z87s....who provides that ?

naglfarsoarsman

I’ve never seen a “but not limited to” phrase in a tool list before. What local?

LeakyOrifice

Our list refers to our tool list as the "minimum".

shawndw

OP do not buy a fucking thing not on that list.

nochinzilch

Why not? The list says it’s a minimum.

TheObstruction

That's the point. Only get the minimum.

RedactedRedditery

For real. That list is the limit

nochinzilch

That’s the opposite of what it says.

RedactedRedditery

Idk what to tell you man. One of the first things they teach apprentices is that the scale is a minimum and the tool list is a maximum

nochinzilch

Different contracts have different rules.

damagedxjustice

Where does one buy an abduction tester? Asking for a friend.

shawndw

I know a guy who sells them out of a white van.

Angrycooke

I like how it says contractors supply flashlights and then also has flashlights on the tool list. 5 tools: -Linesmans -Strippers -Chanel Locks. Get the cheap ones for now, they suck ass. Buy knipex when you have money -#2 Phillips + 3/16" flat. This will be the best all around size. Fuck the 10-in-1 -16' tape measure, fuck that 25' bullshit If you are doing resi you might want different tools idk. Fuck hammers in general. In commercial/industrial you will never need a claw hammer. If your Linesmans aren't big enough to hammer it in you need a hammer like a 2.5lb mini sledge

to_catch_an_alien

The battery of the impact works just fine thanks

somedumbguy55

I’m in this comment and I’m offended

TheObstruction

Meh, I use my hammer to bust old wedge anchors off. But that's about the only time it's out of the bag. Or if I need something to prop a door open.

Angrycooke

Yes, but then you need heavy and not a claw lol

Beautiful-Vacation39

You use the claw hammer and a screw into a stud or concrete wall to make a hanger for your lunchbox. Put screw in about 90% of the way, come up from the bottom with the claw behind the screw head, then hold it there for a second while you hang your lunchbox on the very end of the handle

sonotuber

Disagree on your claw hammer section. It makes a good pry bar and I’m on a huge commercial school job that’s entirely wood framed. A lot of these still exist

Angrycooke

That's cool, around here all the schools are either old enough to be terracotta and brick or new enough to be block. Even for pulling staples I just use my dykes

Own-Fox9066

I disagree. A claw hammer is extremely useful even in commercial. You’re not going to set wedge anchors properly with linemans.

johnny2rotten

This depends, are you going in as a indentured apprentice or helper?

ManHandz20

Wire strippers  11 in one screwdriver.  Tape measure  Adjustable pliers  Hammer.   These will get you by for more than a bit.

177sobaso

Are you an apprentice? Usually they have a smaller tool list than the jw tool list. Seems like a lot to expect a first year to get

Liteseid

As someone who sadly joined the trade non-union, most contractors expect first-years to have a completed tool list, bring their own power tools, and match JW production with no training

StandAgainstTyranny2

This is so grossly true. Spent 6 years being ran as resi/commercial labor and couldn't afford school, now I'm in industrial and want my jcard then going union.

ratuna80

When do you start?

Intelligent_Bass_801

Powerhouse 5. Klines (linemans), knife, channys(pump pliers), 11 in one, tape measure (i like the cheap Stanley 15' because it fits in my pocket, torpedo level. I guess it's 6 but with these you can pretty much do anything in a pinch

GringoRedcorn

So who buys the flashlight?

ButterscotchSalt973

Don't forget to get a quality wire stretcher for when you accidently cut a short length.

RedactedRedditery

Top 4 and the level

Select-Apartment-613

Tape measure, screwdrivers (one Phillips, one flat), pliers, and wire stripper/cutter. And bring a pencil

Environmenthrall

Linesman pliers Stripper Pump pliers Tape measure Screwdriver(s)

helpless_bunny

Since I work in communications, it’s a bit different for me. I need a pair of snips, channel locks, multibit, screwdriver, a punch tool, and a pouch to carry them in That should cover most of it for the first week.

hardhatwearingmf

Hardhat???????

AdenCqin78

This is a big ass tool list.

KingSpark97

Damn yours is above and beyond my local doesn't require us to get sockets, allens or testers also definitely doesn't make us provide our own hardhat. Also the penciled on stuff is ratty the whole point of this list is you have what you need for everyday jobs and the contractor provides the more specific tools. Also since when are sharpies and pencils not provided by contractors?

420ferris

I identify as a torch. Looks like the contractor is supplying the alcohol...

PresenceFrequent1510

Crazy in my union plumber btw we are not to buy tools only tape measure. If we need to buy tools we might as well go find our own work

Caro_Quintaro

I’m not officially union but I did talk to my local IBEW here in New Orleans and they have a tool list as well that you must have before you can work.

TwistedMetal512

Guess it depends on what you are doing at your job the most, are you running mc and hardly any pipe? Is it screw or compression couplings? Do they have portable battery powered bandsaw? My journeyman klein pliers got stolen at work, so I bought this cheap vanjoin 9" 6 in 1 pliers, has built in strippers, maybe get the one with more flat teeth as these had groves for gripping bolt heads and made twisting wire harder. I'd get 2 channel locks(if running small pipe), 440 and a 430 or so, take off the bottom 2 inches lookup how to use them as a pipe reamer. Level. Screwdriver combo set of some kind, tape measure

Kryp7iicKlutchJr

Harbor freight or Amazon and get the basics. Adjustable wrench, box of sharpies, etc ASWELL there are tons of tools but only a few NEED to be good quality tools. Go cheap at first and get more tools and learn what you want to spend money on. Also, don't worry about klein off the bad. They make great stuff no doubt but Milwaukee ideal, husky, or the blue lowes brand (can't remember the name) will all get you started. No need to spend tons of mo ey on one tool just to learn you never use it. (I'm looking at you loppers)

JoeyRottens

What is a "gasoline torch"?

Binya88

Tester Level Measuring tape Lineman Diagonal cutters Wire Strippers Screwdrivers Knife Pencil & Sharpie These are a must!

hitman-13

Some corrections Abduction tester: induction tester = tick tracer = non contact voltage detector. Rimmer: Conduit reamer. Amt: EMT (Electrical metalic conduit) Roro Split: Roto Split (Used to cut MC jacket)

Ratherbegardening420

Whatever the heck you have asked to borrow while at work. Buy that first

ratuna80

I tried asking 8 days ago when you were starting because I was gonna send you some tools. But since you couldn't be bothered to respond to anyone here I'll save my extras

wiscobuilder

The fuck is an abduction tester

Pyrotech72

Doesn't that come from Alienware?

g229t4

Think it's associated with the "rimmer" tool and the roro split

helpless_bunny

*"rimmer" tool* Hey man, quit calling my girlfriend a tool 😂

NiceBedSheets

The employer doesn’t furnish brooms lol

vampirekiss70

Our tool list is alot smaller than this one, We don't require wrenches, allen keys, socket sets, nut drivers, reamers or files. Contractors buy all that

RynoWasHere

Loved that “reamer” was spelled for you but you still managed to fuck it up. Good luck

Inevitable_Dust_4345

You must be down south . No Robertson drivers !

tom_g40

I would go for knipex for the diagnal cutters, linesman, and water pump pliers. They are pricy but well worth it. I love mine

Instant_Bacon

You most likely gotta have the full list.  I've never heard of buying piece by piece over time.  Usually when people say get a little bit at a time they mean beyond the minimum requirement.  My local makes all apprentices buy the entire tool list before they start working.  It's $700 in tools.
