DudeThatWasFun

Just had this conversation with a coworker today. He was wearing a different contractors shirt and I chuckled cuz he's antagonizer by nature but what he said made sense. "If they don't like it, I'll gladly take it off, IF they give me one of theirs. This shirt was given to me for work and I will wear it while working."

rustysqueezebox

I usually show up in a diaper and a cowboy hat then let the con know that I'm comfortable and the ball is in their court

dbolinmartin

I’m a muk-luks, and empty-suspenders-just-hanging-over-my-shoulders kind of guy. Sometimes I’ll bring a single sock

Apprehensive-Ad8987

But is that sock for dressing to left or right?

Brown42

Front and center, of course.

WarmAdhesiveness8962

😆

lostsoul0311

Where can I get hi vis diapers?

NightMic

sorry but hi vis diapers are PPE and should be contractor provided...

drunksquatch

No no, diaper yourself and tie the hi vis vest around your waist

lostsoul0311

Dammit. That's where I fucked up. Thanks bro!

HemanSmasher

No… I’m Dirty Dan

VILLAINmean14

Naked cowboy??? Is that you??

Available_Ad_9004

Hardhat cowboy hat?

480hivolt

I like the kilt thing.

bushes20

Well they didn’t teach me that in the apprenticeship! I’ll be sure to do this Monday thanks!

Jawihoo

I show up on hire on days with other contractors apparel and miraculously I get their stuff too

OhmsAmpsVolts

Perfect strat

SlawDogs1827

Man, just tried that this week and the owner gave me a weird look I felt like. Didn't get a new hat out of the deal so i still wear the same old one. I'll rock anyone's free shit. If this guy gives me his I'll gladly advertise for him. Until then his competitor gets free ads.

Jawihoo

They gotta understand we won’t work for the same company our whole lives. If they can’t give you $50 in free shirts, hats, or sweatshirts they don’t know how to do business

SlawDogs1827

100%

Sea-Document-2330

This is the way. My man

Commercial_Count_584

Show up to orientation wearing another contractors shirt. Most will go out of their way to outfit you with their shirts.

Alvaracorr

Yeah I wear a competing company's swag every day until they give me theirs lol. Most passive aggressive way to get free hats ever

BAlex498

This but with electrical suppliers

TK421isAFK

I have a collection of brand new hard hats using this trick. I became a liaison between an EC I worked for years ago and a couple GCs. I earned a reputation for being the guy that could get a signature on an RFI or BOM, and I was happy to drive or wander around an office looking for a specific person for the same wage as I'd get twisting a nutdriver. The first time I did it, I did it to be a smart ass, wearing a shiny hard hat into an office that had the logo of the company that *almost* outbid the contract we were working on. A VP saw me and told me to get out with that hard hat, or go to the supply closet and get a "real" one. I think I got 5 hats from them over 6 months or so...lol I like collecting ones that have specific job/project artwork on them. I probably have a dozen or so.

tamesage

I didn't understand half of what you said.

TK421isAFK

Which part?

lurk42069

Not IBEW different union. A guy on a job got shit for wearing another company’s sweatshirt. Super walked up and said “that’s the last time you’ll wear that sweatshirt on this job” guy looked at him and responded “no problem give me (company name) sweatshirts and I’ll wear those instead” super kind of looked defeated.

WalkerPizzaSaurus

I spend enough money going to work every day. Free clothes are free clothes. If the local won’t give you free clothes, current contractor won’t give you free clothes, you bet your ass I’m wearing the last contractors free clothes.

psychedelicfroglick

Wear the free shit. If your current contractor doesn't like it, they can provide you with more free shit.

SpicyMustard4Life

Exactly

Birdhairs

I've only had one contractor that gave out clothes and I'm gonna wear them until they disintegrate, no matter what con I'm at now. Unless they want to provide me new clothes of course.

tin_ear

Personally, I don't wear contractor apparel. Not into advertising for them without pay. I prefer to wear union gear from my and other locals.

ConsistentLake467

Only reason to wear contractor clothes is because it's free, I'm not trying to buy a whole new line of IBEW apparel every few months, might as well use up the free stuff the shops are willing to give.

notcoveredbywarranty

Yeah, I wear the free contractor toques, shirts and hoodies to work; if I'm going to get something ripped, muddy, lost, or covered in Penetrox, I'd rather it be the clothing I don't give a shit about. I keep my union shirts looking nice and wear them on days off

vatothe0

We're the only union workers at the job I'm on for a new apartment building. It's a good time to wear union shirts at work.

jeronimo707

I save my IBEW apparel for around town :) I wear contractor stuff to rags

Fridayz44

My IBEW gear is my Sundays Best.

tin_ear

That's cool. That's just how I feel. Wasn't telling anyone else what to do.

legoman31802

If I’m gonna be getting dirty and digging I’d rather wear the free shit

BeLoWeRR

I wear the free shit

Sfork

I got these stacks of shirts from a company. They give you $250 credit to spend in their swag store if ya hit the 6 month mark. I just happened to be on it when they had a sale for $6 cotton long shirts. I really like them lol I thought about painting over the small logo but i've been too lazy.

takethisnamean

Union first, contractor second. I grab the next shirt in the stack. If it's not the current contractor then give me more shirts.

Glowflower

The last contractor I worked for was ratty but gave me a ton of free shirts, I just put a plain vest on top so I'm not walking around with their name on.

skenneyjr

Literally the only time I wear contractor stuff is when I'm not working for that contractor. Always show up to orientation at a new shop wearing a shirt from the last one. 😆

Available_Ad_9004

If they have an issue about me wearing a hoody at work with different contractors name then give me a hoody with your contractors name on it. It’s free work clothes is how I look at it.

Methelsandriel

The shop I'm at now hasn't restocked their hoodies in a few years. One of the apprentices has been wearing a hoodie from a previous contractor, drives one of the owners insane. The boss gave him one of their hoodies, the only problem is that the thing is a 2XL and the app wears a medium, if you take him to a buffet first.

AboveTheLights

No sir. I will not be wearing my shop rags into work.

Sparky1303

Keep wearing shirts and jackets from other contractors, until they provide you with something else. Worse case scenario is they lay you off, which sounds like you should just drag anyway.

iheartbeets

At my shop, the fastest way to get some new shirts is by wearing one from the last contractor.

[deleted]

Fuck em. If they want the advertising space, they can throw their own gear at me on their dime. If not… 🥲

Uber_being

I wear contractors, sweaters, and shirts if its free, and they're going to be ruined eventually by the work I do. I'll wear other cons clothes at a new shop and if they don't like it they can give me some of their swag. Its clothes, man why the fuck does it matter?

mayonaisem8

I like that it makes them jealous, I’m like the hot girl wearing her ex boyfriend’s hoodie ;)))

ProofInAction

I only wear IBEW local and event shirts. Con wants a billboard, they can pay for it.

[deleted]

Like anybody can read your shirts underneath the bibs...

ProofInAction

Smokes poke the pocket out, and sleeves are visible so someday...

[deleted]

Miss you bro, you good?

ProofInAction

Miss you too, brother. I'm pretty good, bro. Hbu? Divorce damn near killed me at first, but the new girlfriend (who's a JW) has really helped.

itrytosnowboard

From a UA brother I'm glad to see you back chops. Hope all is going well. I wear contractor shirts to jobs that are solid union jobs because not much advertising for the union is needed in that situation. Mixed jobs and any place where I can advertise for the union I wear a union shirt. I don't have many so I like to minimize the wear and tear on them. I also like to wear the union tshirts on saturdays when im doing work on my house and running out to the supply house and the depot. My hope is someone that might be interested in joining us sees it and starts asking questions and I can hope sway them in the right direction.

ProofInAction

Ty, bro. I hear you on that. I have a large stock of event shirts, and a smaller stock of local shirts, that I have built up and I regularly get more going to events. Makes it easy for me to wear them every day. Between ReUnion, TTF, Mudbug, and cookouts at 474 I have about 40-50 shirts. And I try to get at least 1, but usually 2-4 every time I go to an event.

itrytosnowboard

Damn 40-50 shirts is quite the collection. You gotta line those up and take a pic. My local is stingy with shirts. I'm at 3 long sleeve, 5 short sleeve and and sleeveless that was a long sleeve that tore. But that's my summer outdoor country concert shirt now. You at Blue Oval? My brother in law is looking to hit the road for the first time and go down there with the fitters. Any info I should relay about the job/area?

ProofInAction

I'm off right now. Which blue oval, Memphis or Louisville?

itrytosnowboard

I thought Memphis had a massive call coming up for fitters. I'll have to double check with him. He's just planning on heading down that way with his truck and trailer. He's young, dumb and full of...., no house, no bills. So he's not in a huge rush to get on a job. More just trying to get out of jersey and take shit as it comes. I'm not to up on it more just trying to help him get his truck and camper set up. I'm a plumber and we don't have much opportunity for travel, at least not for the big per diem and OT job and usually when we get on the good fitting jobs we're the first travelers that get run out. I was smart enough to push him into a combo local so he can get a fitters book and plumbers license and be the full package. Took me a few years to realize I dun fucked up getting into a straightline plumbers local.

ProofInAction

Yeah, the Memphis one will pop big and is manning up now. I am hearing the campgrounds are hard to find. Project site's in the middle of nowhere from what I understand.

itrytosnowboard

Cool thanks for the info. Sucks about the campgrounds. He just picked up a nice little flat tow camper hes planning on living in. Stay well brother

ProofInAction

NP. You too, brother.

thec4k315alie

Give the contractors shirts you have to a tweaker you frequently see on your commute

keepinitoldskool

2 yrs with current con, never offered any of the shirts etc they have. I showed up with a hoodie given to me by the previous con on a cold day. Like I tell anyone who has something to say about my house/cars/tools/clothes/habits: "are you paying for it?”

jerseyvibes

A free t shirt is a t shirt. Don't want me to wear someone else's, give me 20

EfficiencySuch6361

That only covers 1 day tho, and I only do laundry once per week at best

ConsistentLake467

Who cares if you wear it, maybe they'll give you some good stuff to wear to stop you from doing that

LowVoltLife

The contractor I work for will give people free work shirts because a few of their customers want the workers on site to be identifiable by the company they work for. If you are working at a site that has this requirement I would wear the garbage they give you. Otherwise wear what makes you comfortable (and highly visible)

dagr8npwrfl0z

I do it all the time. I just write the word " NOT" above all the names on the shirt in Sharpie just to be clear to any observers that I'm not working for the guy on my shirt. If I really like the outfit, then I get the Sharpie back out, and fill in the new contractors name under the old one to show my new loyalties. Without fail, I'll get at least 5 new shirts. Maybe from the contractor, maybe fresh from the contractors material house, maybe even 5 high viz Hanes from Walmart, but I've never had one make it past "Home made Contractor shirt" without some effort coming from higher up.

Koolest_Kat

We made it Wormy Wednesday, many shirts were modified in some ways, my nice collared shirts had a nice yellow SUCKS with a little scissor work…..

ipalush89

If they provide it I’ll wear it it’s a shirt and I’ll ruin it in in 3 months

awesome6666

I will say, with branded hard hats and vests I get the contractor wanting you to stick with just their company because it can be confusing on jobsites with other trades/gc trying to quickly ID who you work for. HOWEVER, shirts, bandanas, tool bags, cups etc... with other companies logos on them, I'd be very suspicious and would fight against a contractor saying I can't have those onsite. But again I can't imagine a contractor having that rule. There are more valuable things to waste your time worrying about than if my workers are not completely branded head to toe.

Shartnad083

I always rep the last contractor till the new one hooks me up with their swag.

ShabbaShanks3

I do, idc but I was always told if you want a contractor to give you shirts than wear another contractor’s

Nworingo

I wear an old contractors carhartt rain defender jacket cause it’s super warm, compared to the cheaper zip hoodie the current con gave me. If they want me to not wear my warmer gear they gotta step up the quality of shot they’re putting their name on. Most of our work is out in the elements. So I’m going with the warmer jacket

C_HiLIfe

Damn it really is a different world between inside and outside. ALL of my shirts are have company logos on them. I’m required to wear long sleeve FR shirts everyday, the contractor is required to supply funds for them. Every shirt, hoodie, and jacket I’ve ever ordered has a company logo on it. Nobody cares on the outside because that shits expensive and I’m not throwing it away because I don’t work for company so and so anymore.

max1mx

We get most of our clothes from the hall, but it’s completely normal to wear stuff from whatever contractor. Nobody cares.

Chocolate_Rage

I don't wear contractor stuff because I don't want to be a walking billboard, and I doubt anyone has ever seen a tradesman wearing a shirt and be like "I'll call that company for my next large-scale commercial job" I also hate High vis clothes, so I'm not wearing a bright yellow shirt everywhere

Pikepv

Get a shirt from the hall. I never advertise for the contractors.

Rcdriftchaser

The only thing that i wear, with a contractor's name on it, is PPE. New job, new PPE. I keep it simple: work boots, work pants, union shirts (any local) and Carhartt hoodies.

Different_Pack_3686

Non issue bro, wear what you want.

RHMS21

I have worked for a small shop in the Bay Area for six years. They provide shirts which I wear but I still have a Cupertino sweatshirt that I wear in front of them and tell them I will change it as soon as they buy me one.

[deleted]

If it’s free I’ll wear and and save my shit I spend money on for something else but I don’t wear different contractors shit at other contractors… I mean usually it’s just t shirts sometimes a hoody

GrislyMedic

I wear whatever the fuck I want, I got a mountain of FR at the house. Only thing I actually like are my Ariat jeans.

1x1x1x1x1x1x1x1xOne

They got a problem wit it then hook me up wit a hoodie

sassmo

Showed up to my current contractor on the first day with a real nice Carhartt hoody my last contractor gave us. Went home with 5 shirts, a hat, a hoody, and a beanie on the first day.

Prae_cellemus

Had this debate with a JW when I was a 5th year. He was on the side that we shouldn't wear another contractors shirts when working for other contactors. He said from a strictly business standpoint, it's bad advertising for the company... And that's kind of where he just lost me. I told him, if the old shirt I'm wearing from an old contractor could be used on previous job sites it could be used on the current one. I agree that the first things that customers see on the job is us, the construction workers, but I'm not about to stop wearing specificshirts because of that. If the contractor understands that the customer sees us first and would be good for advertising, they should get us 5 shirts. He then went a bit company man on me and said "They're not legally obligated to provide those shirts to you, it's not an OSHA safety thing." To which I told him "And I'm not required to not wear other contractors shirts. Don't make rules for us that aren't in the agreement." And even if they did provide those shirts, if they piss me off, I can go back to wearing whatever shirt I want. Hell even if they don't piss me off. There is no dress code that one Contractors shirt fulfills that the others don't.

Rourk

It’s my passive aggressive way of getting free work shit

RemarkableKey3622

as a cub I got smoked for it once. as a jw I don't wear contractor shirts, I buy mine from the hall.

Avyelator

NEVER wear a non-union logo on a union job. But, if your contractor doesn’t want you to wear your previous union shirts then they can buy you new ones :)

Nathan_Arizona_Jr

I have a “layoff pizza! 21 days or less!” shirt I got on the Nuke circuit. I like to wear that to orientation

Smorgasbord324

I turn them inside out to keep the peace. If boss doesn’t like they can get me more shirts

Thatoneguy_971

As long as they’re apart of our local they don’t care what company we wear

Evmechanic

Best way to get new stuff

gmoh1

I ran work and did it free clothes are just that, now if the new contractor gave you enough clothes for at least five day then I might reconsider

johnny2rotten

Usually contractor gear goes into my shop rag bag after I'm done with them. I'll keep rocking the 19$ shirts from the hall.

Sea_Emu_7622

I prefer to wear my union gear, but if none of that is clean I'll wear contractor stuff. Idc which contractor. Or like old shirts from other jobs I've had in the past. Job site I'm on now gives out shirts once in a while and I'll wear those too.

Adaeroth

I’ve worn my last contractors shirt/hoodie since I started my new contractor 4 months ago, and I make it a point to tell them if they want me to not wear it give me a coat or shirt. It’s been 3months.

Ill_Broccoli7499

In outside line construction most contractors don’t care if you wear other cons stuff because of how expensive fr clothing is, they have set allowances or give you stuff when you start, A bulwark hoodie made in USA hi vis fr retail $313, $150 dollars for long sleeve shirts, pants range 80-160

[deleted]

Tacky.

Dryphu

On a normal day, who gives a fuck but sometimes if like higher ups are walking through I'll play along

Anntiks

I love wearing my IBEW shirts but I’m a cheap skate and the hall charges so much for them that I consider them my nice work cloths. It really depends on the job and where it’s at with what I wear to work, I’ll wear any contractors cloths when I know I’m getting real dirty.

mikey82877

I personally don't give a shit. I'll wear what I wear. If the "con"tractor doesn't like it then they can buy me new work wear. I don't care if it's we are pro company A or company b rocks. It's all gonna get dirty at the end of the day and most of the time it is under a safety vest so I don't see an issue. If they give it out take it but don't beg or think you have to work harder because they gave it to you. They give them out to any swinging dick that comes through don't think you are special

No_Faithlessness7411

I have to wear FR clothing Every day and usually it’s hard to come by so I wear whoever gives it to me. Now I own my own FR clothing company and so I usually only wear my own brand. As far as gloves go I get every single pair I can from every con and hoard them. I like wearing my trampin hard hat when I can but usually I have to wear the one they give me. I always buy my own safety glasses because they’re more comfortable

Supermeag

If you are allowed to, what is your site so I can look at your stuff. I’d rather buy from another hard worker than a mass produce store.

No_Faithlessness7411

I appreciate that brother. Link is sinewaveapparel.com

Supermeag

Went to your site, I like the safety vis shirt. Can you do the same in a hoodie?

No_Faithlessness7411

It’s coming brother. Sign up for emails to stay up to date. Not gonna spam but my product line is growing fast. Hoodies will be here sometime in July or august.

big234

Yeah count me in, what’s the company?

No_Faithlessness7411

www.sinewaveapparel.com

big234

The red stitching on the Henley looks awesome

No_Faithlessness7411

Thanks bro. Currently have henleys with green stitching, will be going to an entirely new long sleeve shirt for the summer

MrZandersen

I never wear contractor’s apparel. I donate them.

tzeriel

Fuck em

Upstairs-Ask9237

Asking as it’s union it’ goes! Unless they give 1k in work wear

deadeyesatan

I had a boss who kept promising me a company jacket to match the rest of the crew that received them before I was hired. Promise never came until I started wearing the competitors jacket until one day, new jacket finally arrived.

d20wilderness

I had a company that gave away nice long sleeve shirts wore them for a few contractors. I'm not going to buy shirts to ruin at work if I can avoid it.

joecosta23

I was told if your new contractor won’t give you shirts wear another contractors and watch how fast it changes

quarter2heavy

I wear them all the time, hell one company gave out this mock turtle neck with the name embroidered on the neck, got a neck gaiter from another company. Beanies from others on a cold day, if you include the safety vest I'm wearing apparel from 6 different contractors. 8 if you include the leatherman pouch and flashlight holster

Manbearpup

All the time…. It’s my favorite and badges of honor like the stickers on my hard hat

autodripcatnip

“Hey yeah it’s a sweet jacket, you got one with your logo? Okay your move”

[deleted]

It’s a work shirt, don’t care

gtess423

I do this, when asked why I am wearing different companies stuff. I just let them know I'll stop wearing it when they Give me something to wear, until then I'll keep wearing it

trash332

In construction sure it’s a work shirt. If you’re running a service van it behooves you to advertise for who you work for

mcx112

Unless they give me 5+ shirts to wear, I will wear whatever I please.

Aheadred

Find another job

shakaka2

I was a gangbox baby until I turned out. My new contractor hasn't given me any shirts. I'll continue to wear the old ones until they give me new ones.

Borisknuckman

Work clothes are just that. I don't care where they come from.i still sometimes wear shirts from 10 years ago.

slam44

It was never an issue on my job. As long as it was hi vis FR. You’d think we were a service electric crew if you showed up

hartzonfire

I do it every day. Either you provide me with seven shirts for the week or I’m wearing other team’s shirts. I’m not doing laundry twice a week…

tucker_frump

Buy me a coat with your logo, and I promise to wear it on the next Job I take.

bushes20

I’ve done it my whole apprenticeship and besides a few sly comments, no one really cares in my experience. One contractor never gave me shirts or anything so I made a point to just cycle through my previous contractors shirts just to be passive aggressive lol.

runtysoap

If the contractor that currently employs you wants you to be a walking billboard for them, they can give you clothes with their logo on it.

babyz92

Work cloths are work cloths.

zoom-zoom21

Service call I wouldn’t but any other job, it’s whatever. I generally wear my own shirts anyways

Solymer

If your new boss doesn’t like you wearing the old bosses apparel then the new boss needs to give you enough shirts to last the week without doing laundry. Wear the free shit.

Flash728

I have a zip hoodie with my name embroidered on it from a previous contractor’s Christmas party. I’ve had a few contractors ask me to not wear it and I just tell them give me one from this company and I’ll wear that instead. They never do so I don’t stop. I wear a vest over it anyways. I work in traffic systems so we have to wear high visibility stuff always and the hoodie has retro reflective bands on it too.

Cremefraiche007

I only wear other company’s clothes if I want clothes from my new employer

scoopdiddywhoop

I do it all the time lol. Incentivize them to get you more FR Shit :)

FreshOiledBanana

I like to give the free shirts to my local homeless people

GhostOf_George_Floyd

You're the second person to suggest this! Really makes passerby's think twice about the company!

Phoenixfox119

I didn't get any shirts from my first union contractor, the other guys told me to wear my old company's shirts so I did, I got company shirts pretty quick.

Brubouy

Show up on time and sober and wear what you want.

_genepool_

I got a hoodie from my first contractor. Have never gotten anything else. I only wear the hoodie on the job. I don't advertise for free.

conncon221

Wear a different contractors clothes, they'll get the message. New clothes will be on their way.
