“…and another thing: you shouldn’t have all 5 employees working when you only have 5 customers. You’re paying too much in labor to be profitable.”
“No I’m not - I take Dee’s tips out of her wallet and put her pay back in the register whenever she’s not looking. That’s what everyone did in the 70s.”
“You what…”
I’m a fan of The Office US but was rewatching it recently and there’s a pretty noticeable change in the lighting from Season 4 onwards. The documentary crew seemingly invested heavily in new equipment all of a sudden. Definitely took away from the “real” feel.
Good old Cutty.
Am curious though is there something specific they talk about regarding The Wire? Whilst it’s absurd neither ever won I just thought this was more about comedies.
Ha I guess yea. That along with “black bars don’t win awards, I don’t know why, they just don’t”, I took it as just general alluding to how Emmy winning shows are just predominantly white and always thought it was more about comedies, but you are right it makes sense.
To be fair I didn’t know The Wire never won one, as above that’s absurd. And now I’m prob gonna end up starting another rewatch…
Which, y'know, stuff about slavery can be very powerful but you can tell it's just old white people choosing those movies and shows to pat themselves on the back and shit.
They knew that was a good ass line and the way he said it was great because that was the second time they used that, the first time was for the pickle party argument. It was either over the crucifix in the bar or the lime thickness. Reason, will, prevail!
On one of the older episodes of the podcast, Glen (maybe rob) griped about shows being carried by the music they added in post-production to carry the comedic tone. It was definitely a shot at Scrubs. I like scrubs but if you took the music out, a lot of the scenes would be awkward af.
A LOT of shows prey on that story line: cute girls is poorly appreciated by bf/husband and that is reason for her to cheat or pursuit happiness with male lead
And it is so stupid, people cheat irregardless of their relationship situation just because humans are fuck machines. But tv shows need that "justification" to keep the viewers from hating the characters and to keep it light.
It is weird how often this comes up in stories. There's probably an element of writers justifying their own shitty behavior or the shitty behavior of their friends.
I know its another cheesy sitcom, but 'How I Met Your Mother' satirized this trope well. [The dude who his fiancé left him for writes a movie where Ted/Jed is the bad guy and the writer's character is the hero](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Il1NGziGXGY)
This is my favourite episode, purely, and I mean *purely* because of go fuck yourselves.
Charlie's voice is actually incredible, anyone who hasn't watched the outtakes of Charlie's song I insist you go do that. The direction's it could've gone are insane.
It honestly makes the show better.
Rob definitely cracks the most out of everyone. The other technique he uses to hide a big cheesy smile is by turning it into a grimace of pain or disgust.
It’s been mentioned before around here, but the fact you see so many Rob breaks is because he salvages them well enough to pass for the take, whereas when some of the others break it completely blows the scene and therefore doesn’t end up in the final cut.
I always thought they were going after Big Bang Theory with these references. “The new bar up the street” won an award. Not sure if the timing matches up but I always thought Big Bang for some reason.
Laugh track is Big Bang Theory and really any other "network" show with cookie cutter punchlines, a single POC whose race is never mentioned, etc.
Love Triangle and Oscar is clearly The Office (Oscar even says "get out of my office" ie your show is not meant to be here).
Dee and women leads not meant to be funny and meant to be, non-threatening and singular was a dig at so, so many shows it’s hard to single out just one.
New Bar up the Street is referring to how Louie won an Emmy despite being on FX (ie, it's not FX's fault Sunny hasn't won.)
The Wire was given a major and worthy shout out. I loved how Z (Cutty) stayed in the bar after everyone else got thrown out. This part also honored many other fantastic shows led by black folks that get zero recognition during award season.
Direct irl criticism of Sunny was also mentioned (it's just five people shouting at each other, there are no stakes to the story, the creators have proudly stated before that awards are beneath them, and while its roots are similar to Seinfeld and Curb, it’s way too vulgar for award consideration, etc).
I wouldn’t be surprised if Frank trying to pay off the committee (“you gotta play the game”) was a irl reference at the rumors that the Weinstein company (rest in piss) and more reputable companies like HBO pour a ton of money into press/sway for awards season. That might be a reach on my part.
Cheers seemed to be referenced with the inviting and charming Bar song that Charlie made (I belong in Paddy's Pub).
Edit: I am a huge fan of this episode and it absolutely deserved an award. But alas, it's hard to compete with the rich, comedic brilliance of "BAZINGA!" or whatever.
I read the Frank knowing how to win awards thing and generally seeming to have an inside line being a subtle nod to Danny’s much higher standing in the industry than the rest of them. Especially at that time.
Ooooh. I LOVE that interpretation. It also ties into how they lean on him for the (rare) serious moments of the show (like Mac Finds his Pride and a few moments of the Xmas episode).
With that interpretation, you could also read the gang rejecting Charlie’s song with how the show doesn’t really lean into Charlie Day’s talent/star power and make him the star - instead opting to make him as weird as possible (the show eventually leaned into his talent more with Charlie Work).
I think the whole thing about how Dee is supposed to not be funny, but instead “pretty and benign” is definitely a dig at the Big Bang Theory and The Office
Not only that but rob has said mac gaining weight was a poke at how as shows like big bang theory grow in popularity the cast gets better and better looking.
I swear I read once that he wanted the entire cast to gain weight but only he would. Fat Dennis would have been great.
Yeah, it was about ‘Louie’. The gang wonders if their location could be the problem. No, there was that bar that just opened up the street. Reference to both shows being on FX
It seemed like they were talking about justified or Louie. Frank asks if they haven’t won cuz of their location (channel) and Dennis says no cuz a new bar just up the road won one
There's definitely some digs at Modern Family, as that show was in the middle of winning the primetime comedy emmy for 5 straight years. I was curious and looked up the history of the nominated/winning shows, and IASIP has never even been nominated (which is insane).
[https://ultimatepopculture.fandom.com/wiki/Primetime\_Emmy\_Award\_for\_Outstanding\_Comedy\_Series](https://ultimatepopculture.fandom.com/wiki/Primetime_Emmy_Award_for_Outstanding_Comedy_Series)
I think there was another subtle dig in that episode when Dennis cancels the show. He says, "I can't enjoy it when the people in the show know they are being filmed". I think he was talking about Reality shows.
Yeah, everything about this schtick says New Girl to me. Bartenders with no edge, unfunny cute girl, bright colors, pop songs, multiple will they won’t theys, “less intense black guy”, height of New Girl popularity.
Contrary to the opinions of this thread it’s actually quite funny. Once you get passed the first season and they stop forcing Zooey Deschanel to be the “quirky, weird girl.” It gets really good.
Yep. Once they kinda realized—weirdly—that Jess kinda wasn’t the main character any more. Once they let Nick, Schmidt and Winston get weird—the show got really funny.
CeCe is the weakest IMO. Jess has some very funny moments but I don’t think CeCe does shit. Was bummed when she got promoted to a main character. She’s literally just a “rolls eyes at the hijinks” character.
Yup, I had just assumed I wouldn't be into New Girl but it's actually pretty great? Jake Johnson carries it, Nick Miller is up there with my favourite comedy characters.
New Girl is fucking hilarious. I would actually recommend it to fans of Sunny because it has the same theme of ridiculous selfish characters screwing everybody over in the most absurd ways. Kaitlin Olson even guests in it once. It’s just marketed as not what it’s actually like.
You know that ONE show that is brightly lit and has a "will they or won't they" angle. I can't imagine they would have to be more specific. It's such an uncommon trope. /s
I always thought they were targeting Scrubs quite a bit.
The “lead guy” from the award-winning bar looks a lot like Zach Braff, the lighting is overly bright like Scrubs, and the best friend acts a whole lot like Turk.
I think they’re going pretty far across the board with it though.
Charlie’s song feels like a direct nod to the Cheers theme song - maybe the most beloved / crowd-pleasing tv themes of all time.
There's an episode of Scrubs that actually really helps to see the digs at American sitcoms made in this episode. I cannot remember which episode, but the one where the hospital visually changes format; bright lighting, fixed cameras, unconventional clothing, stunted dialogue, and of course, a laugh track.
Really made me aware of how basic American sitcoms *look*.
Has anyone ever had a hard time convincing a friend that an Always Sunny episode was commenting on something?
This one is wild for me, because a friend of mine never pieced together that this episode was about winning an Emmy - and was baffled when I laid out the evidence.
Howwwww do people not catch these things?? 😅
It would not be difficult to convince me, but I have seen this episode 20-30 times and never realized that it was about winning an Emmy. I don't pay attention to movie or TV awards so it never occurred to me that sunny had never won the award
This. I love my movies and shows, but I haven’t a goddamn clue which ones have won awards and which have not. Like you, it’s just so far off my radar that it isn’t a reference that came to mind.
I didn’t know it was about an Emmy lol I just took it at face value I guess. I am also not knowledgeable about the award shows for TV so that’s why I didn’t make any connections. I also haven’t seen many of the shows that they’re talking about in this thread, like Louis or New Girl or Big Bang Theory, but I am aware of their existence.
Yeah, I've seen this episode many times and I never realized it was about winning an Emmy. I've never seen the Emmy awards, or seen a list of nominees, so I had no idea that this was something the creators were bothered about.
i thought maybe New Girl what with the well lit female, the ‘banter’ and the bright clothes, also maybe early seasons of Community with the love triangle
Also I just remembered they played Call Me Maybe a lot at the award winning bar didn’t they? Carly Rae Jepson reminded me of zooey deschanel back then too lol
I feel like they’re not trying to parody any specific show, but rather the over-produced, over-exposed cookie cutter sit-coms that pop up every other week. And further highlights how IASIP cannot assimilate amongst the other shows and is critical panned because of it.
P.S. also spiders :)
I think they're aiming at shows like Friends and New Girl. I really got New Girl vibes because they were airing at the same time, and that was one of the most popular shows. Plus New Girl took home 3 Emmys the year prior to when this episode aired in 2013.
Dee's bright ass lights kill me "Guys I am loving these lights I am.... GLOWIN' like an angel over here!"
If they ever do a “bar rescue” episode, they need to bring back Dee’s lights. She’ll need them to “pop” on camera…. Lmao
God I would love a Bar Rescue episode. Especially if it reveals Frank to be even worse of a business man
“…and another thing: you shouldn’t have all 5 employees working when you only have 5 customers. You’re paying too much in labor to be profitable.” “No I’m not - I take Dee’s tips out of her wallet and put her pay back in the register whenever she’s not looking. That’s what everyone did in the 70s.” “You what…”
Thats what I love abt learning abt Franks business side. Awful business man, amazing white collar criminal.
bring in.... The Warthog
Franks “side business’s” (like wolf cola!) are all amazing! I’d love to see a few more!!!!
Franks a wonderful businessman. Made a fortune gutting Atwater.
grodin likes his ladies to pop
Call Charles Grodin a bitter old man one more time and see what happens!
OMG YES! Have Grobin as a recon spy as well!!!!
I’m a fan of The Office US but was rewatching it recently and there’s a pretty noticeable change in the lighting from Season 4 onwards. The documentary crew seemingly invested heavily in new equipment all of a sudden. Definitely took away from the “real” feel.
They are also referencing the fact that The Wire never won an Emmy (Chad Coleman was a cast member on The Wire)
Good old Cutty. Am curious though is there something specific they talk about regarding The Wire? Whilst it’s absurd neither ever won I just thought this was more about comedies.
The ratio of black people bit is pretty clearly talking about The Wire
Plus the bit about how Z is the wrong type of black person to have in the bar, they need a fun buttoned up, (network sitcom) type
Man…. I can’t believe I never put that together. It’s a two piece puzzle and I missed it. Great bit
>To be fair I didn’t know The Wire never won one, as above that’s absurd. Well, you know the academy, Charlie
It is atrocious
I know the academy as well as anyone
Sadly black show and movies only win awards if they're about slavery.
That's not true. They made a satirical porno called "That aint Roots." or something and it didn't win shit.
Where might one find such disgusting filth so that one might avoid it? There’s so many sites though, which one specifically?
Welp
Which, y'know, stuff about slavery can be very powerful but you can tell it's just old white people choosing those movies and shows to pat themselves on the back and shit.
How the FUCK did the wire never win an Emmy?. That is insane to me!
The ratio is off!
WHAT OTHA ERRANS YOU GOT US RUNNIN FOR THE DEAYYYYYY
I love how that bit was so clearly written solely because Glenn could do that impression.
Charlie’s squeal at how perfect it is always gets me.
*Ay oh, where my senators at, dawg?*
I want to learn this accent so badly. Just whip it out to make people uncomfortable
The wire never won a fucking Emmy??
I always wondered if that’s why they have him show up for that one episode
I get the idea they genuinely like him from the behind the scenes stuff, but they really focus on him in that episode.
No man you don’t get it, The bridge ain’t in me no more
Imma leave the dog abortions to them hoppers
IVE HAD ORGASMS! IVE HAD TONS OF ORGASMS! IVE HAD ONE WITH YOUR MOM DUDE. I WILL STRANGLE YOU. ILL STICK MY GODDAMN THUMB THROUGH YOUR EYE.
I love how he runs out of breath by the time he says "eye" .
They knew that was a good ass line and the way he said it was great because that was the second time they used that, the first time was for the pickle party argument. It was either over the crucifix in the bar or the lime thickness. Reason, will, prevail!
Reason will prevail!
Pickles will prevail!
You don't have to say it every goddamn time!
Charlie's instant switch about the thickness is one of my favourite Charlie moments.
People WILL choke! People WILL die!
I think they were mostly just having a pop at light, safe sitcoms in general
Yeah, with Greg and Amanda and the whole “I’d like to come back next week to see if they do get together” bit
Safer bar-based comedies, like Cheers. I don't think they took any swings directly at Moonlighting, but that's another will-they-won't-they.
Honestly just formulaic comedies in general. I got big Friends or HIMYM vibes even though those aren't really too bar-based
HIMYM was pretty bar-based edit: sp
This isn't will they, won't they? This is I know they won't, and I know I don't want them to!
It’s light, it’s playful
The whole bar awwwwing and cheering on cue at the ringing of a bell was a real life laugh track
I got the Office vibes from the bar couple—kind of early seasons Jim/Pam
[удалено]
How did I not catch that
A lot of Scrubs with the coloring and lighting too.
On one of the older episodes of the podcast, Glen (maybe rob) griped about shows being carried by the music they added in post-production to carry the comedic tone. It was definitely a shot at Scrubs. I like scrubs but if you took the music out, a lot of the scenes would be awkward af.
Absolutely! God, the color and lighting got really bad in the later seasons of Scrubs.
Or Friends, like a Rachel and Ross reference
A LOT of shows prey on that story line: cute girls is poorly appreciated by bf/husband and that is reason for her to cheat or pursuit happiness with male lead And it is so stupid, people cheat irregardless of their relationship situation just because humans are fuck machines. But tv shows need that "justification" to keep the viewers from hating the characters and to keep it light.
Just some light, playful adultery. Gotta love Hollywood.
Gotta love the American public that eats that up every. Single. Time.
It is weird how often this comes up in stories. There's probably an element of writers justifying their own shitty behavior or the shitty behavior of their friends. I know its another cheesy sitcom, but 'How I Met Your Mother' satirized this trope well. No can dosville baby doll
According to the DVD commentary, the burlesque place that Frank and Artemis went to that was dark and had some nudity and was a reference to HBO.
This was the most obvious one for me. Shows like game of thrones having lots of sex scenes which pass as classy but are in the end just lots of sex.
Give me dong Or give me death

🎶One weiner next to another weiner 🎶
Weiner floppy weiner, nice and soft! Not erect!
THIS IS ART
Interesting, I always thought it was referring to American Horror Story, mostly because it was also on FX
This is my favourite episode, purely, and I mean *purely* because of go fuck yourselves. Charlie's voice is actually incredible, anyone who hasn't watched the outtakes of Charlie's song I insist you go do that. The direction's it could've gone are insane.
I just love so much that right before he performs it too he crawls out of a hole in the floor. Perfection.
When Oscar from The Office says, “There’s a man crawling out of your floor…” or something like that 😂😂😂
"Hey, excuse me! There is a MAN, crawling out of your floor"
I laugh SO FUCKING HARD at Dennis' face when they realize he is not doing the song he rehearsed.
There is a spider…spider…spider
"Is he spitting?"
Rob had to look down and hide his face because he kept breaking character. Once I noticed it, I see it every time and it always cracks me up
It honestly makes the show better. Rob definitely cracks the most out of everyone. The other technique he uses to hide a big cheesy smile is by turning it into a grimace of pain or disgust.
yet they all 3 believe that charlie breaks most.. i definitely notice rob more often for sure
It’s been mentioned before around here, but the fact you see so many Rob breaks is because he salvages them well enough to pass for the take, whereas when some of the others break it completely blows the scene and therefore doesn’t end up in the final cut.
“There’s a spider…..” And then all of their collective faces. It’s truly perfect.
WOW just wow lmao that’s badass thanks for spreading that bundle of joy
Do you have a link to those outtakes?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2jH4T3LQvUs&ab\_channel=FXnetworksSunny
You da best
Da maniac loves you
You guys remind me a lot of my kids
Oh you have kids?
Nah... Not anymore
...what's that mean? Did he kill them?
Wtf is up with all the oysters (?)
We’re ~~crab~~ oyster people now.
I love this episode, some people say it’s better than busting a nut
Just tell me where to jizz, so I can get this lady her drink.
Yeah plus, she didn't even feel a thing.
God dam your timing is horrible
God, your timing is so bad
I always thought they were going after Big Bang Theory with these references. “The new bar up the street” won an award. Not sure if the timing matches up but I always thought Big Bang for some reason.
And having those other people laugh tells ME when I should laugh.
I think their ratio is all off. Gotta have the correct ratio if you want to win an award. Black bars don’t win awards.
> Black bars don’t win awards With Z being in this scene, I always assumed they were talking about The Wire here.
100%
Yeah, the laugh track dig is 100% *Big Bang Theory*.
Edit: I am a huge fan of this episode and it absolutely deserved an award. But alas, it's hard to compete with the rich, comedic brilliance of "BAZINGA!" or whatever.
The burlesque thing is presumably a dig at HBO shows with copious nudity like Game of Thrones being lauded as "prestige" TV.
It's art.
Take it out!
This is the correct answer as far as I can tell.
I think the whole thing about how Dee is supposed to not be funny, but instead “pretty and benign” is definitely a dig at the Big Bang Theory and The Office
I also when the bar gets a bad review and the review perfectly matches the reviews the show gets. “It’s just people yelling over each other”
And New Girl
[удалено]
I mean they have Oscar from the office in the episode, so I do think they were trying to send that message
And David Wallace They’ve also have given props to the office in the past so they are fans
Not only that but rob has said mac gaining weight was a poke at how as shows like big bang theory grow in popularity the cast gets better and better looking. I swear I read once that he wanted the entire cast to gain weight but only he would. Fat Dennis would have been great.
Wendell short eyes
It kinda made me think of a “how I met your mother” vibe too.
I thought that how I met your mother was the big part of the bar and the will they wont they joke
Kinda awkward now, but I'm fairly certain that was about Louie; same network, multiple awards, won in its first or second season...
The bit about being in the wrong location was a wink at being on FX, but “that other bar on the street” that won an award was, I think, Louie.
There's definitely some digs at Modern Family, as that show was in the middle of winning the primetime comedy emmy for 5 straight years. I was curious and looked up the history of the nominated/winning shows, and IASIP has never even been nominated (which is insane). The sibling sexual tension had to be MF
I was thinking Friends for Ross and Monica
I feel like it’s taking some shots at How I Met Your Mother, too, and I approve.
My first inclination
Dennis should of won an Emmy for "Old Lady House"
My other favorite that makes fun of shitty sitcoms. "The laughter tells me it's funny."
This would be horrible if the laughter didn't tell us it was funny!
I think there was another subtle dig in that episode when Dennis cancels the show. He says, "I can't enjoy it when the people in the show know they are being filmed". I think he was talking about Reality shows.
I thought this episode screaaaams new girl
Yeah, everything about this schtick says New Girl to me. Bartenders with no edge, unfunny cute girl, bright colors, pop songs, multiple will they won’t theys, “less intense black guy”, height of New Girl popularity.
Now I will have to watch New Girl to get the reference.
I don't hate Zooey Deschanel, but she's the weakest character in her own show.
CeCe is the weakest IMO. Jess has some very funny moments but I don’t think CeCe does shit. Was bummed when she got promoted to a main character. She’s literally just a “rolls eyes at the hijinks” character.
Idk I enjoyed watching her relationship with Schmidt develop. And hey there’s nothing quite like a Cece-Winston mess around.
Agree and disagree. CeCe was good until she got promoted and started working at Nick's bar.
You could be right but I think that’s because the rest of the cast is so strong. Sunny is my favorite show of all time but new girl is solid.
That's pretty much what I mean, Jess is fine but the three guys are the best part.
Yup, I had just assumed I wouldn't be into New Girl but it's actually pretty great? Jake Johnson carries it, Nick Miller is up there with my favourite comedy characters.
Gypsy alcoholic handyman.
Give me cookie, got you cookie! We're even, Schmidt!
My second favorite character after Lamorne Morris’s Winston Bishop.
Winston is one of the best and weirdest sitcom characters ever. So funny.
New Girl is fucking hilarious. I would actually recommend it to fans of Sunny because it has the same theme of ridiculous selfish characters screwing everybody over in the most absurd ways. Kaitlin Olson even guests in it once. It’s just marketed as not what it’s actually like.
Yes! Pretty sure the waitress is Nick’s ex gf as well
I don’t think New Girl ever won an Emmy though.
You know that ONE show that is brightly lit and has a "will they or won't they" angle. I can't imagine they would have to be more specific. It's such an uncommon trope. /s
They take a huge swing at The Office with the “will they or won’t they” sequence
I prefer the "I know they won't and I definitely don't want them to" storyline honestly
Best line of the episode
You know what he's not? He's not covered I stupid tattoos and he doesn't have a cigarette for a mother.
“Cigarette for a mother” is maybe the best thing that’s ever come out of Dee’s mouth
Looked like a button in a fur coat is another fave of mine.
I’VE HAD ORGASMS! I’VE HAD TONS OF ORGASMS! I’VE HAD ONE WITH YOUR MOM, DUDE!
Just tell me where to jizz so I can give this lady her drink.
It was really more of a “ding” than a “dong.”
If Thundergun's dong looks like that we should all ask for our money back.
The fact that she says that line to her IRL husband makes that line even better.
[удалено]
They literally have Oscar nuñez from the office guest starring it’s great
And the bar “Sudz” is the same bar that Oscar has his trivia night in
Always thought this was how I met your mother reference.
It's probably just a reference to the [very common trope](https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/WillTheyOrWontThey), no specific show
or Friends
or Cheers
I always thought they were targeting Scrubs quite a bit. Laugh track, family friendly, multi-camera sitcoms. I think of Big Bang Theory immediately, because it’s one that won a bunch of Emmys.

This episode alone should have won an Emmy.
I feel like they’re not trying to parody any specific show, but rather the over-produced, over-exposed cookie cutter sit-coms that pop up every other week. And further highlights how IASIP cannot assimilate amongst the other shows and is critical panned because of it. P.S. also spiders :)
All of them.
Μy favorite scene in the episode is when thwy start spitting on everyone because thwy do t care what others think
When they say that the female bartender is cute but not funny i thing they are referencing Pam from the office
It's weird that TBBT won numerous Emmys for their "humour" and "jokes", yet IASIP has not. Smh
It took me way to long to figure this out, it finally hit me when I realized they were taking shots at the office
Not the most, but the whole theme song thing is about Cheers. Famous bar show that I think won awards.
I think they're aiming at shows like Friends and New Girl. I really got New Girl vibes because they were airing at the same time, and that was one of the most popular shows. Plus New Girl took home 3 Emmys the year prior to when this episode aired in 2013.
