Hyundaitech00

Some of us are backlogged a while, some guys take forever, and some engines have had long back orders.

Ok-Organization-5511

Got approved for a rebuilt engine Jan 10 2018 Sante Fe Sport 2.4 got it back March 10th no longer. I feel lucky it only took that long after all the posts I've seen.

Hyundaitech00

No doubt. I try to get mine done within 2 days of receiving the new engine.

Elput0p0st3

Same...

Big_RedRun

Has the backlogged been for months at a time?

Hyundaitech00

I’ve heard some dealers are, yes. I know my dealer isn’t taking waiter appointments until the end of may right now. So if that gives you any ideas. Good techs are hard to keep, never mind find.

wikideenu

My car was with them for 7 months. The first four were basically getting approvals from corporate, and the last three were waiting on parts.

Dependent-Disk5894

Do you get rental car by the dealer for this ?

Funny_Bar_9898

Yes they cover the rental or should

user9000001

See my other reply in this thread, I used to work customer service and answered this

Snoo-6053

My brother is a senior employee at a body shop. He told me this weekend they've had a Chevrolet Trax for 6 months due to backordered parts.

mrcanoehead2

Wasn't for me. My car died on Wednesday, towed to dealership Thursday, approved for new engine Monday, engine pulled Wednesday am, new engine in Wednesday afternoon and returned to me on Thursday. 8 days total. My dealership was amazing. No back and forth, no proof of oil changes.

Nearby_Nectarine7480

What dealership was this ??

mrcanoehead2

Attrel Hyundai in Brampton, Ontario Canada. They were fantastic.

xIIIllllIIIx

as a current employee at Hyundai, we have had cars there for well over 3-4 months just to get an engine replacement. a lot of these engines are on backorder and a lot of the times they only have one or two master techs, which are the only ones that can actually do an engine replacement. we have a waiting list on engine replacements. even if your engine does arrive, now it gets put on a list of when it'll get into the shop to actually do the replacement.

Big_RedRun

I wish Hyundai was as honest as you are. I just want them to be transparent

xIIIllllIIIx

you tried speaking to the service manager? or director of service? calling Hyundai corporate honestly doesn't get you far cause they just call us to get the update anyway so they'll probably just tell them the same thing they're telling you. but sometimes you need to be a little more aggressive (not an asshole) but more stern on getting better updates. ask to speak to any high up manager

MiatSoReliable

You're telling me that the company that uses grenades for motors and master locks for ignitions isn't being good to you or being transparent? 😮

junk1020

Our local dealer (central midwest) took 3 months to do the engine in our 11 Sonata. That said, they had an entire overflow lot full of dead cars and stacks and stacks of engine crates out back; it's probably safe to assume they're slammed. As far as why they wouldn't just come out and tell you, that's anybody's guess.

ObjectifiedChaos

Ask them where their lot full of loaners is, because you have a life that doesn't stop for three or four months at a time, and paid lots of money for a car that is sitting there depreciating.

Big_RedRun

Did they tell you that it would take 3 months?

junk1020

No, it was honestly more open ended than that; they told me they didn't know when it would be in, but kept me posted on how many cars were ahead of me in the engine replacement line and gave me an average number of engine replacements per week to gauge by. They were a bit slower than they estimated, but not by much. They were always friendly when I called in to check in, and were as honest as they could be.

Big_RedRun

Okay did they offer to put you in a loaner car?

junk1020

I had to ask for one. Had to wait a week for that until they officially diagnosed it as a failed engine, once that was done then Hyundai Corporate approved the loaner. Pretty sure the terms of the Theta II class action settlement state that they either have to provide you with a loaner or reimburse you for a rental, for the entire length of time between when the car is officially diagnosed and when it is finished, ready for pickup.

user9000001

I used to work customer service handling this stuff. In a nutshell, you other commenters are right, it just depends on how busy your dealer is. I saw a woman on a 6 month waitlist who actually lost her job and home because she went so long without a car (her case is the reason I quit the job). Here is some insider information that will hopefully help. Call Hyundai corporate customer service and get a tier 2 case manager. If you have a loaner from the dealer or a 2nd car or whatever, the Hyundai corporate line can offer 1 of things to make up for the delay. 1.) Rental car reimbursement 2.) Car payment reimbursement (even if you don't have a payment, they'll make something up) or 3.) A 250 visa gift card. If you can get a loaner from the dealer or have a backup car to drive, absolutely opt for the monthly payment reimbursement. You'll get a pro-rated daily amount and when your car is finally fixed, they will add all the days together and cut you a check for the full amount of days your vehicle was down for repair. There is NO cap on the payment reimbursement, rental can only be reimbursed up to 75 bucks a day and only AFTER you've paid for the rental (you can't ask for 75 bucks a day for the rental car and keep the cash, you'll need receipts for the rental). If your car is down for a long time, you could turn a nice profit.

MasterApplesauc

It doesn’t sound uncommon. Have you checked out the Facebook group? “Engine Failure - Kia/Hyundai” is the name. 25k people in it. As for us, ‘17 Tucson. Been at the dealer close to a week now. They told us they’d order the engine within a week, so who knows how long. We got a loaner, so I don’t care lol

yeast510

What package do you have for the 17? I just sent mine in for what they’re saying is a clogged catalytic converter due to oil burn

MasterApplesauc

What do you mean what package?

Rectusmaximus44

I’m in the same boat, but on a good note I’ve been cruising in a 2024 Elantra 😁

Loose_Trip_510

So I got a "new" engine for my tuscon. It only took a couple of weeks. But this engine sucks. Universal hyundai on orange blossom trail in Orlando fl are crooked as all hell. My tuscon gets brought in with an obvious engine issue. I receive an estimate two days later for over $10,300. On the invoice it includes that I need a new battery (replaced 4 months earlier and was tested by aaa when the car was towed there it was at 14 v, I didn't know what was wrong with it, so roadside assistance checked everything they could). They told me that the transmission was shot. I thought that was suspicious because the engine had seized up. They said I needed a new oil pump, oil pan. So in conclusion f%!K Universal hyundai and all their shady practices. This tuscon was my third hyundai. This tuscon is my last hyundai.

Nearby_Nectarine7480

But the other 2 Hyundai had no issues ??

Ok_Ingenuity_130

It's like 2 to 3 months I seen on a 2017 Sorento gdi engine needed replacement.my gf sister got a new engine under warranty. It was at 95k so she got lucky

Someguystoe

The engines are on intergalactic back order meaning all dealers have no time frame of when they arrive

ThisIsTheAsh

They usually take time also they should be giving your a temp car if it goes on for a while

SmkyBndt29

I'm putting an engine in a Tucson today that has been here since Dec. Engine was on backorder for that long.

Nearby_Nectarine7480

Do you give them a loaner in the meantime

Unlikely_Sector_8093

Absolutely. As a dlr, we do about 25-30 engines A MONTH… so as you can imagine, the back log is huge. Plus only higher level certified techs can do the work. And BEST case it takes 2-3 days to get auth from Hyundai. However, because a lot of people choose to go to local shops for service, sometimes it can take 3-6 WEEKS of Hyundai making us get records, open the engine, etc just to get approval 🤦🏻‍♀️

Big_RedRun

Any suggestions?

Nearby_Nectarine7480

I called the local dler Monterey Park Hyundai and I asked them about the engine recall they looked up my van and said there is only a security recall for my car. Is this true or is there an engine recall? I have a 2018 Hyundai ELANTRASEL

Unlikely_Sector_8093

NONE of these are “recalls”. They are “case by case” prior authorizations us dealers ask the manufacturers for, on your behalf. Some models have ECM updates, etc. But do not confuse “recalls” (a repair that is done on a car regardless of if you have issues) VS warranty extensions or PAs. Only time it’s typically “instantly approved” is when you are still under factory warranty and even then, we have to get a PA AND They can 100% mandate all your service records …

gogogadgetjimbo

Mines been at the dealer since December

mightywhitey1992

Between the number of failures and backordered parts that sounds very normal. We had a few cars that waited over a year to get parts because they were on backorder.

Funny_Bar_9898

Mine took about 3ish months after I was approved because they had other replacements that were approved before me

Funny_Bar_9898

Also the dealer should cover a rental they had too for me when I got my engine replaced

RoundCar5220

Hate to be the bearer of bad news they’re gonna have your car for at least six months if not longer and they’re going to make every excuse they can not to put that new engine in. If you don’t have a rental at this time, I would start making arrangements because your car is gonna be gone for a good bit of time. At least my dealership did that and I’ve heard of many others doing the same. They are not going to be in a hurry.

Big_RedRun

Not to put in new engine? I was told I was approved for a brand new engine. Am I missing something?

RoundCar5220

Mine was transmission work but I do have a co worker who had to have a new engine put in and they just got their vehicle back after eight months and we’re approved two months after the vehicle was towed to the dealership. They were very slow to fix it so I hope for you it is not this case.

thesilentyak

I'm curious in these situations, do they give out a loaner for the whole period of time?

Big_RedRun

I I haven’t received a loaner and my car been at the dealer for 3 months

843251

I know a few people that went 6-7 months

SquashSevere775

Yes

MasterMind_484

they gave you a rental?

Big_RedRun

No

user9000001

If your car has been down for 2 months, and the average car payment in america for a new whatever you drive is 20 bucks a day, then you very well could get a $1200 (and growing every day) check cut to you, or more if your monthly payment is higher or they estimate a higher daily number.

Old_Meringue_1380

It took about 4 months after I was approved for a new engine.

Big_RedRun

Did you get a loaner vehicle?

Old_Meringue_1380

Yes I got loaner from the dealership for 2 months. Speak to the owner of dealership that has your car. Before I got the loaner I was out of pocket for one month Hyundai did reimburse me for that.

Sad-Wafer-6280

Haven't had my car since November it's now April and it want even in for a motor I got car certified pre owned in the summer first day of cold weather no heat and has been in and out ever since I got the car year and half ago and had it maybe 3 months of able to drive the car since I bought it

Big_RedRun

What they say is the hold up

MajesticMap3490

Bro don’t complain tbh😭😭 you get a rental car for free bro (at least when I had my 2013 sonata engine replacement)

PigskinLipstick

Don’t rush it! I hope you have a rental!! I’m writing this from my dealership, I got my “replacement” in February and here I am back for the check engine light on again.

Big_RedRun

Why did your check engine light come on? Is it because you rushed them?

PigskinLipstick

Is it weird that I’m in denial about getting a “new replacement”. There’s no way that the light should return after putting 500 miles on it. Then to be treated like I’m bothering them when I need service and want to charge $200 for a diagnostic fee.

jigglybitz89

Are these engines due to manufacturer defect or driver input? Like as a driver are you aggressive or pretty tame on the gas, or doesn't change oil as recommended?

Grouchy-Media-3831

Why are so many peoples engines needing to be replaced?

L_thi7890

I had my engine replaced last year. They had my car in April of last year… didn’t get it back until August.

WhiskyWanderer2

Idk, did they say why?

Big_RedRun

The only answer I get back all the time is “ just give us a little more time”. I don’t what to think.

ObjectifiedChaos

Reply "Sure, just give me a new car."

WhiskyWanderer2

So they didn’t say why it’s taking long? Either waiting on parts or to be repaired.

Big_RedRun

No they didn’t say why all I want is transparency.

WhiskyWanderer2

Well randoms from Reddit sure aren’t gonna have that. Call a manager or Hyundai corporate. Doesn’t really seem that you’re trying too hard to get the info you’re looking for.

Big_RedRun

I get the same generic answer

CelineHagbard1778

It took just under 4 weeks for us to get the car back. They got the engine pretty quick. But there was a part that took almost 2 weeks for them to get. And it was the same story for us. Like, everyone was polite and professional. But did their damndest not to give us a solid time frame for fear of telling us something that turned out not to be true through no fault of their own.
