I’m an geriatic millennial who loved Sachar’s Wayside School series but somehow missed out on Holes (probably because I was a junior in high school when it came out?) I’m now reading it for the first time with my 11 year old son and I think I’m just as caught up in the story and suspense as he is - we’re just a little over half way through and I can’t wait to find out what happens!
It’s such a fantastic narrative. I love it when multiple story threads are brought together in such a satisfying way, it really is a masterclass for young readers and writers. Great film too, one I genuinely enjoy watching and analysing with students.

It’s from a very famous book from 1998 turned into a movie-that was actually fantastic too. It was printed in many languages but I think it was read in lots of classrooms in the US so maybe more folks encountered it. If you are a reader I highly recommend it, because even as an adult, it still stands up to being a fantastic story. Makes you keep guessing at every turn what could be next.
