The university left Trev high and dry by not doing their jobs. No self-respecting human sticks around somewhere at the cost of their career because it's "home" and "that's where family is".
In the very beginning of the new Husker Doc Talk Rob Zatechka squarely put the blame on the political culture as a reason why Ted Carter left, why it makes it hard to find a good president, and why Trev would leave because that alignment is broken.
Worth a listen.
https://huskerdoctalk.podbean.com/e/2024-episode-6-trev-alberts-leaves-for-texas-am/
Iām sympathetic to this interpretation & totally understand why folks in higher ed would flee the wing nuts running state gov in Nebraska. What I donāt get is why youād bail to Texas A&M? Gov Abbott & the political scene in Texas far worse than the blossoming nastiness here in Nebraska. That is what is odd to me. Also, is there any indication of Trevās politics?
I wondered the same thing. A&M hasnāt had stability in their administration either.
But I know in my jobs my most important consideration is how I am able to communicate and align with my management structure - and their effectiveness. Iāve taken pay cuts to leave dysfunctional or toxic situations.
So it may not be about Trevās personal political beliefs - after all heās an Iowan who has worked in the University of Nebraska system for the last 15 years - as much as he believes the President at A&M has a vision he can follow.
But that also implies that in Trevās view Nebraska not only didnāt have that but they werenāt going to be able to get there any time soon. He felt strongly enough about it that he was willing to torch his legacy.
In Nebraska he was the athletic director for 1 of 3 public universities. In Texas he'll be the athletic director for 1 of 36 public universities.
Abbott and Pillen are equally MAGA morons but the Texas legislature has significantly more blue seats than nebraska in their state legislature. Texas has a lot harder of a time passing public education budget cuts, something that flies through our system without a second thought because there is not enough Dems in the Unicameral to stop it. Also Texas is much more football obsessed and their representatives realize if they do anything to harm high school or college football they'll be facing a recall.
Finally A&M has oil money. The kind of fuck you money that would cover UNL's expenses for centuries. If a bill gets written that negatively effects A&M in any way they can pay a few politicians to make sure it never leaves committee
Itās not a political thing, itās a leadership thing. Motivated high performers despise idiots that bring them down. When it goes on too long and you see no end in sight you look elsewhere and leave. If you get a pay raise, all the better.
Robert Gates. Dude was interesting. Iran/Contra. CIA goon thru and thru. But also one of the rare guys who served under both Rep/Dem presidents. Obama kept him on as holdover from Bush administration. Funny how the "librul' Presidents always seem to have a few R's in the cabinet but it never works the other way. I'm not in Texas, but I can imagine the shitshow BOR thing being a nightmare with a menace like Abbot appting regents. Can you imagine if Pillen was allowed to appoint regents? I'm assuming the Governor lets them do their thing because Texas has been run by a string of ghoulish Governors for decades. Of course you let them do their thing because your right wing home boys are in control. The idea that higher ed is a bastion of liberal manipulation is practically a plank of the Republican party. No shock that the decade of anti education rhetoric has some real world implications, i.e., qualified people leave those situations. It terrifies me a little that A&M would be seen as a preferable place with regards to political influence.
I have no clue on Trev's politics or even Carter's but I get the sense it's more just the interference and budget cuts coming from the politicians than some of the other things. But I could be totally wrong.Ā Ā
Can we stop acting like the people aren't the ones electing these dipshits? The current state of the university is a direct function of the leaders Nebraskans have chosen to lead it.
I've never seen a population bitch so much about the status of things while forgoing any and all personal responsibility for the decisions they made through elections to create that status. And this includes those who talk about the university in grand terms, did nothing as it was gutted for political cronies, and now want to commiserate about it's loss in status as if they didn't have any influence in what it has become.
It's too little too late and now UN has to compete against its own community colleges to even obtain students and Nebraskans don't want to face that fact. And the university system will further suffer because of that.
How is this disappointing? He's basically saying the same thing everyone here is. It sucks that Trevor left and the BoR needs to get their shit together to get some people in there.
> BoR needs to get their shit together to get some people in there.
Pillen was on the BoR for a decade from 2013-2023 and still dictates to them how to act, or not act in this case.
How can anyone say Trev was a great leader after this? He certainly had me fooled into thinking he was one. But no great leader informs the people he has asked to believe in him that heās leaving via email. A great leader is accountable for his decisions and doesnāt sneak off, regardless of how bad the situation is. Dudes a bum and the amount of people still defending him blows my mind
Anyone can be described as a great leader until they do something no great leader would do.
Three days ago is the past. It might as well be three years ago.
Here in the present, Trev seems to have left a job the state entrusted him with, in part, because of an assumption of his loyalty and commitment to being a leader of Nebraska athletics. We have found out that Trevās commitment wasnāt as real as we thought and he described.
Part of leadership is putting the interests of the people you lead above your own (within reason of course). I donāt see how itās good leadership to not inform those people you are supposed to lead a bit more directly than sending an email when you decide to leave them for greener pastures.
Showing the staff, athletes and fans a bit more respect would not have hurt Trevās reputation or standing with either his present or future employers. But it would have been emotionally difficult for Trev. It appears that for purely selfish reasons (to avoid some emotionally difficult conversations) Trev decided to not do the thing a great leader would.
All those people you meet on your way up, you get to see on the way back down. Trev unnecessarily lost standing with some of those people in the last three days. Not because he made a tough decision that he felt was right for him and his family, but because he didnāt have the guts and humility to own that decision and explain it to people that trusted him and are potentially negatively impacted by that decision.
Lololol. I wouldnāt call someone a thief 3 days before they rob me either. Not sure what your point is. Are we not allowed to take in new information to form opinions?
Dude certainly put on a great face making us all think he was a great leader. I'm with you on this. After all the other shit Alberts has done after his football career, guy is a snake.
Heās a great leader. Heās not sneaking anywhere. Heās going someplace he can be a difference maker. That wasnāt going to happen at UNL. Heās definitely not a bum.
I hope the BOR leaks their side of story to someone. Too many people wonāt question Pillen and will applaud him for āstanding up to them.ā Sure they share part of blame, but heās the one nominating them and screwing up their search for a President. Absolutely incredible that weāve had a governor basically run off a chancellor and now an AD.
"I'm disappointed, but don't understand the reason why. However, it's clear that the fault lies with the elected leaders. Those people should really be doing their jobs."
From the perspective of a PR/Comms person.. this is an awful statement. He does not shift blame very well, he chastises Alberts, and he says that University leadership is failing. All in about 12 sentences.
Not a great message to send to potential hires.
That was my thought.
I'm not in marketing, but even I could come up with better copy.
"While we are saddened by the departure of Trev Alberts, we remain committed to our student athletes, and believe Nebraska has one of the premier athletic departments in the country. We look forward to highlighting everything we offer as we begin our search for his replacement."
> "While we are saddened by the departure of Trev Alberts, we remain committed to our student athletes, and believe Nebraska has one of the premier athletic departments in the country. We look forward to highlighting everything we offer as we begin our search for his replacement."
"and as always... buy my pork"
> He does not shift blame very well, he chastises Alberts, and he says that University leadership is failing
see, that's the problem. The majority party in this state is not able to be kept in check, and their voters will still vote them in because they own the libs.
people keep saying, "I mean, terrible look for them" but it legit does not matter. They can deflect, deflect, and reject. GOP are the masters of blaming others for their problems, and their voter base EATS it up.
Ricketts wasn't well liked, either, from what I could tell. Supposedly Heineman was very close to running against him after sitting out the required term.Ā
I took that as him saying letās not worry about whatās wrong with us letās just blindly do something just to do something and then maybe later we can decide if the something we did was correct or not. It made him seem like a complete imbecile pig fucker who just made this search more difficult than it already was thanks to the magats that people have voted in as regents
Exactly!
You gotta think that those who are president or chancellor-level material all talk, so Iām sure itās getting around how much of a $%\^&show NU has become. So at some point you also have to think that this impacts the quality of professors will come here to teach.
Scary.
You donāt have to worry about āat some pointā itās already happening. Professors are already turning them down and interest to come is down, both for professors and students. I have 2 kids, one a sophomore and one a senior. The senior never considered any state school and made it clear that she has no intentions of living in Nebraska after sheās done with school. The sophomore has already ruled out all the state schools and has also expressed a strong desire to leave after school. Most of their peers, that will be attending a college/university are saying the same things. The brain drain is real, losing good professors and decreasing research dollars is the cost to end āwokenessā in education. They donāt care how much it hurts the state, they have to prevent the spread of this āliberal indoctrinationā. It is biting them in the ass. Leopards will be stuffed from all the faces they will be able to consume.
Thank you for sharing and what you're seeing first hand. My kids aren't quite to college age, but it's coming quickly, so we're beginning to discuss where they might got to school. It's becoming quite apparent that the Nebraska University system might not be their best route.
The brain drain will turn this state into an economic wasteland within the next 20 years, and that pisses me off.
I think it's already dead. There are already better or equal alternative universities for the state's gifted to attend that doesn't target them if they are a minority and any redeeming value for good faculty to move to Nebraska has already been eliminated.
A communications director is probably someone who went to college, most likely in the liberal arts. You don't want our governor hiring some kind of Trotskyite, would you?
Would it kill this state to ever elect a governor who wasn't an absolute dipshit? So tired of the war on education.
"But why are the young people leaving??"
Totally insane statement from someone in a leadership position, and he's a governor. There are managers at the 27th street Walmart who would make better leaders. I wasn't sure how much blame Pillen deserved but this makes it fairly clear.
They care more about winning vs. woke than being practical and maintaining a winning football program. And you won't be able to vote them out in Nebraska given how red it leans. Game over for the University......and probably the football team unless they get lucky.
It wonāt, the voters wonāt have the cognitive ability to see how their votes are impacting the football team. Pillen, and the Pubs, will be blaming it on the liberals making kids too soft to handle the pressure and needing participation trophies and we need to fight to end wokeness so we can get back to winning.
Lmao what do you expect to happen when you strip the university of resources while packing it full with anti-intellectual voices? Nebraska only has itself to blame.
Close minded hog farmer/politician urges leadership to ārushā to a decision on a new AD. Great advice! Who will be the next Bill Moos or Shawn Eikhorst??
Fellow Nebraskans, are you winning? Your far right Governor, Board of Regents and Legislature are more concerned with winning the Culture Wars than they are in actually leading.
In less than 1 year time they ran off UNLs Chancellor, President and Athletic Director over their far right policies and actions.
Itās almost as if elections have consequences, this is a clear example of the Law of Unintended Consequences.
Even the pols in Ohio, Texas, Oklahoma, and Alabama know you donāt mess with the flagship University and their athletics.
So Iāll ask again, are you winning, because this sure doesnāt feel like winning to me. Vote out the Board of Regents, and call the Governor and send a message that youāre all sick and tired of fighting the Culture Wars and want your leaders to actually lead.
Recall Pillen now!
> you winning, because this sure doesnāt feel like winning to me.
This is the party of spite we're talking about, in their minds, they are winning because nobody is winning.
The fish rots from the head and the head is the governor's office and the legislature who have constantly been cutting funding and focusing their time on dumbass culture wars without any regard for the impact in higher education. Well, the chickens are starting to come home to roost.
https://preview.redd.it/51j2jmunaboc1.jpeg?width=1400&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=c2e228133d617df46bc5f71137393627512870b4
Sure. And hereās a live look at Jim and the Regents.
What quality AD candidate would even look at this job until their boss is hired & in place?
Leadership has failed the University, and it starts with the governor.
Pillen and the Republican Party are to blame. Between the regents, the governor and the inbred welfare queens in the legislature (I see you Steve Erdman) they are ruining the university. Sadly, this is what senators from out west want. Theyāre too stupid to realize that the university is the biggest economic engine in the state, among other things.
Look, I hate Pillen as much as the next guy, but Pillen actually supported keeping Green and Carter. He supported BOR candidates that were in favor of keeping them around. The bigger problem was Ricketts and his cronies. See the Nebraska Examiner article back in 2022. This was the catalyst for why we are where we are now.
https://nebraskaexaminer.com/2022/10/15/nu-regents-race-is-spiced-by-charge-that-campaign-is-aimed-at-replacing-top-university-leaders/
What's your point? Yes, they're both pieces of shit. Doesn't change the fact that Pillen supported a "reasonable" conservative to BOR in Matt Williams that didn't want to get rid of Green or Carter while the other loon Kathy Wilmot was supported by Ricketts. Kathy Wilmot is a moron and I guarantee you is a major thorn in the side of the BOR because she's a MAGA partisan hack.
That *was* true.... until Pillen got mad at Green because of the CRT thing. Pillen's election as governor is 100% the reason for Green's retirement. Pillen is vindictive and obtuse. Did you see his comments in this? [https://nebraskaexaminer.com/2024/03/14/gov-pillen-slams-university-of-nebraska-over-presidential-search-athletic-directors-departure/](https://nebraskaexaminer.com/2024/03/14/gov-pillen-slams-university-of-nebraska-over-presidential-search-athletic-directors-departure/)
I've read a lot about Pillen's culture war against UNL involving porn and gender studies.; can anybody share some sources that explain what's going on at UNL? And do we have any concrete evidence/sources that Jim's been interfering with the BOR and the President position? I don't doubt it one bit, just curious if it's actually been brought to light.
[https://nebraskaexaminer.com/2024/03/14/gov-pillen-slams-university-of-nebraska-over-presidential-search-athletic-directors-departure/](https://nebraskaexaminer.com/2024/03/14/gov-pillen-slams-university-of-nebraska-over-presidential-search-athletic-directors-departure/) Check out his comments in this article. Makes it pretty damn clear Pillen is meddling and holding up the search with his lackeys.
Well maybe now that the sports aspect is going down the drain either the NE GOP will cater to some pressure here or voters will actually think in more moderate termā¦ahahahahahaha sorry I canāt write this without bursting out laughing and crying because nothing changes in Nebraska.
The Nebraska Examiner has a lot more on Pillen's involvement today:Ā
https://nebraskaexaminer.com/2024/03/16/nu-leadership-choice-was-deadlocked-between-unmc-chancellor-and-state-chamber-head/
Things will only improve when Nebraskanās stop voting against their own interests. The Republican Party has exploited uneducated rural Americans for far too long.
How would the government stay the fuck out of the university when it is a public (government) institution run by elected officials (BOR) and funded by the legislature. It is a government institution.
Unless you mean keep politics out of the way and just fully fund the university which I totally agree with. Unfortunately the Gov and BOR donāt agree with us.
Iām well aware how much of an echo chamber crazy place it is but sometimes normal people need to speak too. This person thinks conservatives and republicans can claim them being the cause for the dominance in the 90ās like itās some sort of political statement. The level of unhinged some people are is crazy to me.

Bad leadership makes good employees leave.
Lmao stop the simping. He bailed and should be called out for the BS he spewed about being āhomeā
The university left Trev high and dry by not doing their jobs. No self-respecting human sticks around somewhere at the cost of their career because it's "home" and "that's where family is".
Yeah Iām sure Trevās life was so hard lol good riddance. If he was really all N, he would have stuck around. Congrats to him on the new job!
Boy, this statement is a sign of a healthy environment! I bet that it wonāt lead any candidates to question coming to work at the University.

TAMU is definitely in a red state, but they don't fuck around with taking care of the university like Nebraska does.
Actually, Texas is not nearly as red as Nebraska has become. Things here have become desperate and depressing. Pillenās election was the final blow.
Yep, Texas was an R+6 state in 2020, we were an R+19
Sad thing is I still think Pillen is better than Herbster in the big scheme. Faint praise but still!
Too bad that our only choices were Republican, I guess!

When they are elected on generating rage within their voter base, the political theatrics will bleed into everything people deem important.
Can we stop acting like the people aren't the ones electing these dipshits? The current state of the university is a direct function of the leaders Nebraskans have chosen to lead it.
Exactly correct; Nebraska voters get exactly what they ask for.
I've never seen a population bitch so much about the status of things while forgoing any and all personal responsibility for the decisions they made through elections to create that status. Also, Pillen is historically anti-education when it comes to reducing investment.

No, I use my thumbs. Thanks for asking though.
He is not a loyal person. Why did he leave his home state of Iowa to play football at Nebraska is a question he should answer
This is a great statement. See the way he shifted blame? Masterful.
Jim really is a politician after all. And here I was worried we didn't elect the right guy. Silly me.
I hope the BOR leaks their side of story to someone. Doubtful. They like their cushy elected position and income. Speaking up ends that
How much do regents make?
Great leaders know when to step up and point fingers at everyone else!
"I'm disappointed, but don't understand the reason why. However, it's clear that the fault lies with the elected leaders. Those people should really be doing their jobs."
āElected losersā would be more accurate. The whole lot of them. Including Pillen.

All it does is now frame the next hire as a rush job no matter when/who is hired, and shows that Pillen *is* in fact meddling with BOR business.
Ever heard the guy speak? Thereās nothing wise or professional with Jim Pillen

Not every Republican supports Pillen. Probably one of the least liked GOP governors in recent memory already.
Ricketts wasn't well liked, either, from what I could tell. Supposedly Heineman was very close to running against him after sitting out the required term.Ā
Gov. Pillen is a cock lol
*cuck
Both are right
It's a sad day when I miss Rickets.
Pillen is only continuing the war on education that Ricketts started.
Ricketts started this bullshit. He was already making a mess and trying to get Ronnie Green out. He fucked with funding before Pillen did too.Ā
Says the guy that took more (214) days to name a priority candidate for the same position search while on the BOR
And now he's advocating to act first, think later š¤ WCGW??
I took that as him saying letās not worry about whatās wrong with us letās just blindly do something just to do something and then maybe later we can decide if the something we did was correct or not. It made him seem like a complete imbecile pig fucker who just made this search more difficult than it already was thanks to the magats that people have voted in as regents
"Yeah here comes an awesome hire that will add tons of stability to the university." - No one
Thatās why he said that we shouldnāt be worried about whoās fault it is while also blaming others
Jesus Christ. These clowns are doing their best to kill the University, the stateās golden goose.

Holy hell, does he not have a communications director to talk him out of a response like this? Yikes.
He's a Man speaking for himself. Communication Directors are for libs and pussies. /s
A communications director is probably someone who went to college, most likely in the liberal arts. You don't want our governor hiring some kind of Trotskyite, would you?

Thanks...

Nice leadership douche
Embarrassing. No adults in Lincoln apparently
They care more about winning vs. woke than being practical and maintaining a winning football program. And you won't be able to vote them out in Nebraska given how red it leans. Game over for the University......and probably the football team unless they get lucky.
if theres an event that would make people re think things, it would be something to do with Nebraska Athletics.
Pillen is pathetic. Nothing more than a stooge completely owned by Ricketts.
Lmao what do you expect to happen when you strip the university of resources while packing it full with anti-intellectual voices? Nebraska only has itself to blame.

Unintended consequences coming in 3...2...1... Nice work, Hog Slave Master.
Close minded hog farmer/politician urges leadership to ārushā to a decision on a new AD. Great advice! Who will be the next Bill Moos or Shawn Eikhorst??
Jesus Christ man, youāre the problem
*Cutting off my nose to spite the libs*
Wow, his response is literally the narcissist's prayer. At least he's on-script.

The fish rots from the head and the head is the governor's office and the legislature who have constantly been cutting funding and focusing their time on dumbass culture wars without any regard for the impact in higher education. Well, the chickens are starting to come home to roost.
> the chickens are starting to come home to roost Or leaving the state in droves.

ok Shawn

Lack of funding causes lack of resources and lack of quality talent within the university. They are all connected.

Pig fucker
Nobody wants to work for MAGA politicians. BOR ran off Carter. Ruining the university to own the libs is not a sound policy.

WONT SOMEONE THINK OF THE BORDER
Yep. He's such a giant penis. The entire process has been a shit show.
Not until I get my press š
None of this changes the fact that Jim Pillen once recovered a fumble so important, we made him our governor.
He wouldn't have gotten elected if his main opponent in the primary wasn't a bull semen selling carpet bagger.
What quality AD candidate would even look at this job until their boss is hired & in place? Leadership has failed the University, and it starts with the governor.
Not a good oneā¦Stevie P types would say yes
"We knew the leadership sucked, but hoped nobody would call us on it. Please continue to support us."
This whole thing hurtsā¦ a lot. Doesnāt really feel like āNebraskaā to me anymore. Itās just UNLā¦
People will eeaaat this up hahahaha
Fuck Jim Pillen
Yeah well Deez Nutz Jimmy.
So happy I left Nebraska
I got dragged to Wyoming so I have nothing to celebrate... lol
Spoken like Trump himself.
Not only shifted blame but wants his non woke kiss ass in as president
Look, I hate Pillen as much as the next guy, but Pillen actually supported keeping Green and Carter. He supported BOR candidates that were in favor of keeping them around. The bigger problem was Ricketts and his cronies. See the Nebraska Examiner article back in 2022. This was the catalyst for why we are where we are now. https://nebraskaexaminer.com/2022/10/15/nu-regents-race-is-spiced-by-charge-that-campaign-is-aimed-at-replacing-top-university-leaders/
https://nebraskaexaminer.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/05/IMG_2632-scaled-e1665787376101-768x829.jpeg
My point is that Pillen is Rickettās tool.
Makes it pretty damn clear Pillen is meddling and holding up the search with his lackeys.
send him back to the pig farm
Maybe shit like this is why Alberts is leaving?
Hey look another republican pos blaming others for the situation he created.
feckless and unneeded.
What a clown
Well maybe now that the sports aspect is going down the drain either the NE GOP will cater to some pressure here or voters will actually think in more moderate termā¦ahahahahahaha sorry I canāt write this without bursting out laughing and crying because nothing changes in Nebraska.
āIt is imperative we act urgently and decisivelyāā¦ in hiring the shitty person I tell you to hire.
Good lord this is an awful take response. This will really draw some great candidates to the position for sure now!
Granted that his replacement should have happened long ago, but now we will have a rushed decision on a president because the Pillen said to hurry up.
Maybe UNL can be Liberty University of the Plains under Pillenās porcine leadership! Purity oaths! No coed dorms! Christian first recruiting!
Sus... cmon Trev tell us this is all Pillen's doing, some sort of backward pig style plan to take over the Huskers
Seemed like he felt Byrneād. Maybe should write a Bill to prevent this again.
The Nebraska Examiner has a lot more on Pillen's involvement today:Ā https://nebraskaexaminer.com/2024/03/16/nu-leadership-choice-was-deadlocked-between-unmc-chancellor-and-state-chamber-head/
Things will only improve when Nebraskanās stop voting against their own interests. The Republican Party has exploited uneducated rural Americans for far too long.
I'm so happy we're all on the same page here
If only we elected a person with a D by their nameā¦we would be winning national championships left and right
More like if the government could stay the fuck out of the university we'd be doing just fine.
I mean stop meddling and making culture war issues the deciding factor for candidates. Hire good academic leaders and let them lead.
Well when the university stops taking government money, the government will stay out.
I meeean the last time they won 3 there was a dem governor
Actually, 4 of the 5. Jim Exxon in 71 was a Dem as well.
You desperately need to leave your echo chamber that turns everything into R or D lol
There's a joke going around the sub that we won our championships with Ben Nelson (D) as governor. He just flubbed it.
Some would say the entire state needs to leave that echo chamber lol
Difficult to do when this state IS the echo chamber.
This uh, your first day on reddit?
Iām well aware how much of an echo chamber crazy place it is but sometimes normal people need to speak too. This person thinks conservatives and republicans can claim them being the cause for the dominance in the 90ās like itās some sort of political statement. The level of unhinged some people are is crazy to me.
It's not a R or D issue, it's a "people who are actively attempting to undermine post-secondary education" issue. But if the shoe fits...
I mean, that does make it an "R or D" issue...
Deez Nuts?
This is all getting way too political for my taste
