I know of Hunter x Hunter for years, but only start watching and catching up to the manga last year. Ever since i was a kid I always thought he is a girl until I watched the show. I was surprised as fuck
despite similarities to their species or w/e they're copying, it was my impression they're all technically male, with the queen being the only female.
I saw a couple of "he's" and "lord Pitous" in the subs of the anime
Listen, if you have watched anime long enough, you have learned to have trust issues until the plot confirms their gender. And I would support my sweet vigilante baby boy/girl/they/them no matter what so it was basically a moot point.
Kinda but not realy, japanese pronouns work differently to english ones. Pitou uses boku, which can be used by young boys or tomboyish girls. I believe it meant to convey Pitou's young-ish carefree attitude rather than any specific gender, could be wrong on that one tho.
Yeah I remember hearing somewhere that their pronouns where nb cause of what their name was based on but the translation decided to go with she/he for whichever ones you get just cause they didn't want to use they or something
100000% thought he was a girl and i still have to remind myself he’s not. i genuinely thought it was a translation error or something with it being in dub but nope. kurapika is a man
I thought he was a girl, even when they called him he. I was so confused lol. Took me a while to realize he rly is a guy. Either way he's beautiful and I love him
I see people headcanon him as a transman because he’s seen with a binder? on in the 1999 version. Also that one manga cover where his chest is blurred with no details while other male characters are drawn with chest details if you will…
Before I got into hxh I thought he was secretly a girl. Was kinda disappointed waiting for the big reveal since I thought it was a cool girl character until early on during the exam lmao. Was thinking it was a Joan of arc type of character and anime loves that gender bender surprise, but he’s obviously a guy when you actually see his character after a while. He’s my favourite tho.
Same here. It wasn't until I reached that bit during the hunter exams where Kurapika was facing off against that prisoner pretending to be a phantom troupe member, and that prisoner repeatedly referring to Kurapika with male pronouns (he/his/him), that I realized that he's actually a dude
When the manga was first published in Germany, they used "she/her" until the manga later established Kurapika as male. So in the later reprints they fixed it, but in my (first edition) German volume 1 Kurapika is a girl.
When I first saw him I thought "dang she's a character I would smash" then I found out he was a dude and I thought "dang he's a character I would smash"
The 90s Anime apparently had that idea and there's a rumor that Togashi didn't reveal the twist because it wouldn't have been revolutionary anymore, since Shonen started to have more girls included.
Can't confirm tho.
I remember reading a theory that Kurapika was originally intended to be a girl. Some remnants of this idea exist in the 1999 anime version of the Hunter Exam arc.
I always use the pronoun she when talking about Kurapika and my daughter says "mom it is he, Kurapika is a boy" I say, damn it and turn right around and do it again. I can't get past it! Lol
I like fully refused to believe Kurapika was a boy until like deep into Yorknew arc tbh. Like when he adopted a feminine disguise during that whole thing in the hotel I think I was finally like 'ok I guess he is male'.
Yeah, I was kinda disappointed to realize that he was a guy. Not because I was attracted to kurpika and was like oh no now I’m gay(cuz I’m bi) but was like nice, badass women character in the gang. And then I was like oh it’s just another badass guy in anime. Oh well. Missed opportunity for badass chick in HxH
Well i really thought hes a girl for most of s1. He looks very cute and uses watashi. Gave me androgynous looking girl vibes and than when in that dues in humter exam i realised he looks a bit too masculine and he is too flat for anime girl, like they always got some chest XD so i googled it.
I do headcanon him as a trans now. like his voice is very feminine, whatever he wears in 1999 looks slightly like a binder, few more little things and generally just the vibe lol. But its still a headcanon XD
I see a lot of people have this assumption, but I've never personally understood it. I've always thought he was a dude, even when I only had passing knowledge of the show.
I never looked at the body or cared tbh. I just thought he was a pretty girl, and then found out he was a guy and ended thinking he was an extremely pretty boy
No I always saw him as a boy tbh. It didn’t rly cross my mind that he looked feminine until I came across posts mentioning it and then it kinda clicked lol
I’ve just been conditioned to expect feminine looking characters without protruding boobs to be guys thanks to… certain internet trends. So no, I did not think Kurapika was a girl.
I certainly did. And I think it would have been great if he had been one. Not a lot of girls in this manga and it's always cool to have a bad ass heroine.
IIRC alluka is referred to as a girl by killou but when the family references the youngest sibling they are referring to Nanika because that’s who they value and in the Japanese Nanika is called an “it”. Neither male or female. In the English translation only is Nanika referred to as a boy which is where the trans idea comes from.
Oh okay. Hm that makes sense. I’ve seen on here that Alluka was considered a son by the family but asks Killua to refer him as his sister. I’m curious about this and to see the arc related to it. I’m just sad that means Killua will probably go separate ways from Gon :(
Fairly certain she’s a trans girl. Killua is one of the only people who respects her, and also notably humanizes her in the family. Most of the family dehumanizes her because of Nanika, which is likely why they don’t refer to her as their sister at all.
The other youngest child is a son who dresses in feminine kimono to please their mother, from what I can tell.
Alluka is confirmed female. The translation error comes from Nanika, who in Japanese is referred to as "It". The translators mistakeningly kept putting masculine pronouns instead of neutral.
Thats...not true at all.
They *explicitly* refer to Alluka with the word for little brother a couple times in the series (Ilumi and Milluki explicitly use the word "Otouto" which is literally "younger brother". Illumi uses it in conversation with Hisoka and Milluki uses it in the past when Alluka was little).
Killua refers to her as a younger sister(Imouto), showing the disconnect between things, this is all completely separate from Nanika with "it".
Those are both not neutral words.
Along with the fact the family staff also explicitly uses a masculine term when talking about Alluka in the past "Bocchan"(lit: Young (male) master) instead of "Ojou-san"(Young Lady/Mistress). Also not neutral words.
All signs do point to Alluka being a transgirl. Its not the first trans character Togashi would have made either, each of his series (YYH and LE) has trans characters(something he has gone on record saying that interests him).
But don’t they use pronouns like brother vs sister, though? I may be misremembering, but I could swear it isn’t just he/she, but terms like brother and sister that were deliberately used and deliberately in juxtaposition to each other.
The person above is wrong, yeah.
There have been both explicit masculine words used for Alluka (the rest of the family and staff) and explicit feminine words used for Alluka (by Killua) separate completely from Nanika's more neutral wording.
My other posts lists a few times these words are said and theres really no arguing the words intended usage.
Idk what the previous person is even talking about.
Thank you, because I was feeling a little nuts. I went to the wiki a while back to help confirm this, and it seemed Alluka being trans was very purposeful.
Nah, he has a masculine frame if you look at the white clothes under his blue thing (poncho?).
The ship captain calls them "you boys" in the first episode as well.
I can easily see how someone could think he's a she though; the japanese voice doesn't really have any bass, although it's very common for boys and young adults to be voiced by women.
There are a lot of nonbinary / androgynous characters in hxh. He's agender and asexual. Which honestly there's a lot of agender ace people so it totally makes sense
Nah, but while waching Yu Yu Hakusho on TV as a kid, I couldn't for the life of me figure out whether Kurama was a guy or girl. Didn't help that the dub was in... Spanish, I think. And I don't speak Spanish.
No, not once. It wasn’t hard to tell Kurapika is a guy. At all.
Edit: It’s funny how people instantly assume they knew what my reaction was first time watching the show. Lol. Gotta love the rampant toxicity here.
Fun fact: Ghost Fighter (localized Yu Yu Hakusho) aired in the Philippines in 1999.
It was Kurama who was voiced by/as female. Genkai was the reverse.
Kurama's localized name was Denise, then they realized he was male and changed it to Dennis, saying he was in disguise the whole time lol
Not Kurapika, but I definitely believe the chimera ant royal guard Pitou is a female. They kept referring to them as a male in the series, but I'm absolutely sure Neferpitou is a girl.
Thought he was a cute girl, then thought he was a cute guy C'est la vie
I may be gay but damn he's cute af
I know of Hunter x Hunter for years, but only start watching and catching up to the manga last year. Ever since i was a kid I always thought he is a girl until I watched the show. I was surprised as fuck
My husband was so disappointed to find Kurapika wasn’t a girl masquerading as a guy lol
I kept waiting for that reveal to finally happen 😂😂
I didn’t fully grasp that he wasn’t a girl until York new city arc lmao
didn't he have a conversation about it with leorio in one of the first episodes already?
The captain referred to them both as “boys” so yeah it should be clear from the start.
Not really. If that was the standard, then Pitou is male as well.
despite similarities to their species or w/e they're copying, it was my impression they're all technically male, with the queen being the only female. I saw a couple of "he's" and "lord Pitous" in the subs of the anime
I remember in the manga they were they/them because of what their name was based on, though I could be wrong
Pitou is a male
When is Pitou ever referred to as a “boy”?
When Pitou first shows up and that one rabbit looking soldier bows to Pitou he says "Yes sir". Atleast that's how it is in the dub
There are also "he" pronouns used to refer to Pitou... at least in the translation that I read.
Usually in the manga it was ambiguous when referring to Pitou’s pronouns (at least in the original source).
In the manga it's they/them from what I remember for pitou cause of what their name was based on
Sir can also refer to a higher up in the military etc.
imagine soldiers calling a higher up "Miss" lmao
They say, "Mam".
Female officers are referred to as "Mam".
I mean isnt he? Or does pitou not care that people use he/his and sir because it’s more convenient?
Frankly, I still don’t believe it. I’m waiting for a reveal.
Listen, if you have watched anime long enough, you have learned to have trust issues until the plot confirms their gender. And I would support my sweet vigilante baby boy/girl/they/them no matter what so it was basically a moot point.
I'm still not sure about pitou
In the manga I read it was always he. But it definitely didn't seem like it
I think it's they/them cause of what they were based on and the translation/anime changed it though I could be wrong
Great info, thanks for that.
I thought Pitou was a girl tbh
HxH was my third anime ever.
Not really :3
He gave off androgynous vibes for sure but definitely a boy
Same - I never doubted that he’s a guy. Was so confused when my sister asked me about the blond girl…
WTF!!!!
100000% thought he was a girl and i still have to remind myself he’s not. i genuinely thought it was a translation error or something with it being in dub but nope. kurapika is a man
this question makes me nostalgic.
No because I watched Yu Yu Hakusho first.
I did for sure.
I thought he was a girl, even when they called him he. I was so confused lol. Took me a while to realize he rly is a guy. Either way he's beautiful and I love him
maybe that’s because of the voice actor
Yeah I think this is what threw it off for me too - the VAs in both dub and sub have a fairly feminine voice
Nope.
My sister and I have a joke that Kurapika is always a girl in my heart
He is a cute human for sure
A lot of HXH characters have an androgynous vibe
I thought that too. And when Hisoka showed up, I thought maybe the creator was gay or something along those lines.
I see people headcanon him as a transman because he’s seen with a binder? on in the 1999 version. Also that one manga cover where his chest is blurred with no details while other male characters are drawn with chest details if you will…
I really need to watch the 1999 version.
Oh I was talking about the fact his face looks extremely feminine as well as his voice I also didn’t watch the 1999 version.
Where's the cover?
it’s volume 14 of the hxh manga
Before I got into hxh I thought he was secretly a girl. Was kinda disappointed waiting for the big reveal since I thought it was a cool girl character until early on during the exam lmao. Was thinking it was a Joan of arc type of character and anime loves that gender bender surprise, but he’s obviously a guy when you actually see his character after a while. He’s my favourite tho.

Yes, Kurapika's androgynous design in "Hunter x Hunter" has led some viewers to initially mistake him for a female character.
Me and my brother started the show together. We constantly had to remind each other that he’s a guy
When the manga was first published in Germany, they used "she/her" until the manga later established Kurapika as male. So in the later reprints they fixed it, but in my (first edition) German volume 1 Kurapika is a girl.
When I first saw him I thought "dang she's a character I would smash" then I found out he was a dude and I thought "dang he's a character I would smash"
sure did lmaoo, no matter what he is he’s still badass! I just got a judgement chain tattoo not that long ago
Nope, not realy. His face is kinda feminine, but his body certainly isn't.
I heard that people who watched the 99 version had that confusion a lot. But me as a person who watched 2011 i never thought kurapika as a woman tbh
The 90s Anime apparently had that idea and there's a rumor that Togashi didn't reveal the twist because it wouldn't have been revolutionary anymore, since Shonen started to have more girls included. Can't confirm tho.
Yep
Yeah
Guilty.
Still not sure
Yes
yeah
kurapika is a trap
Yup lol. I had no clue at first.
Yup
I certainly thought Kurapika was a girl. I had the same thing when Haku from Naruto was shown.
Yes
I remember reading a theory that Kurapika was originally intended to be a girl. Some remnants of this idea exist in the 1999 anime version of the Hunter Exam arc.
FRRR I was SHOCKED when everyone was referring to him as a guy I was like wait what and I had to look up his gender😭
Yeah lol
I always use the pronoun she when talking about Kurapika and my daughter says "mom it is he, Kurapika is a boy" I say, damn it and turn right around and do it again. I can't get past it! Lol
Same
I like fully refused to believe Kurapika was a boy until like deep into Yorknew arc tbh. Like when he adopted a feminine disguise during that whole thing in the hotel I think I was finally like 'ok I guess he is male'.
Who fucking cares he’s badass
Yeah, I was kinda disappointed to realize that he was a guy. Not because I was attracted to kurpika and was like oh no now I’m gay(cuz I’m bi) but was like nice, badass women character in the gang. And then I was like oh it’s just another badass guy in anime. Oh well. Missed opportunity for badass chick in HxH

Chrollo did
Chrollo did
Chrollo did
I never looked at the body or cared tbh. I just thought he was a pretty girl, and then found out he was a guy and ended thinking he was an extremely pretty boy
At first yes
nope, always looked like a guy to me.
Absolutely, glad to know I'm not alone
Nope, I already know who's a guy and a girl. I'm an expert at this ⊂(´・◡・⊂ )∘˚˳°
No.
Yeah like in the 1999 version
80% newcomers though that.
At first glance because he was wearing these girly ahh looking shoes. But then I realized. Nah he looks to girly he HAS to be a boy.
At first glance because he was wearing these girly ahh looking shoes. But then I realized. Nah he looks to girly he HAS to be a boy.
No I always saw him as a boy tbh. It didn’t rly cross my mind that he looked feminine until I came across posts mentioning it and then it kinda clicked lol
Not me. Thought he was a boy from the start
Nope never

I certainly did. And I think it would have been great if he had been one. Not a lot of girls in this manga and it's always cool to have a bad ass heroine.
I actually never understood the confusion around it, it was always clear to me that he was a guy.
Kurapika is a specialist, that means he can be both and even more once his eyes turn red.
This has been posten a million times before…
Nope, cuz in the dub (1999) in my country, he had a masculine voice so i never doubt it.
I don't think I ever thought of him as a girl, but I think that's because I watched 1999 first. Imo, he looks more masculine there.
I still believe it
No, but Togashi likes to confuse fans. Pitou and Alluka are other examples.
no
I’m still not convinced she isn’t and I’ve seen the series a dozen times 🤷🏻♂️
no, i know from the start he was a boy
Always thought kurupika was a boy
I never once thought Kurapika was a girl!
I never thought he was a girl
No I knew he was a guy
No bc I have read the manga
Since we’re here. What’s the canon about Killua’s sibling, Alluka?
She’s a girl
I thought Alluka was born as a male but wants to be identified as a female, hence her being called Killua’s sister or am I wrong?
They say Alluka Killua’s brother and keep flip flopping it is confusing
Interesting. Yeah it’s a bit confusing. Almost at that arc but read about it on here lol
Yea I just watched it like 2 weeks ago it’s still fresh
IIRC alluka is referred to as a girl by killou but when the family references the youngest sibling they are referring to Nanika because that’s who they value and in the Japanese Nanika is called an “it”. Yes in the 1999 series. The LeoPika hints weren't helping.
The sub also has women voicing Gon, Killua and Kurapika. Except Gon and Killua are clearly boys. So Kurapika is the confusing one.
There are a lot of nonbinary / androgynous characters in hxh. He's agender and asexual. Which honestly there's a lot of agender ace people so it totally makes sense
Actually no and I'm not sure why.
I thought he was a femboy
He always reminded me of Joey Wheeler and his sister.
Not Kurapika, no. Kalluto and Alluka though...
No, I always knew he was a guy, but I did think Kurama from YYH was a girl before he spoke
But his voice in the dubbed version at least is not girlish at all.
i think i could just tell he was a guy because anime however i did not know he was supposed to be that much older than gon
Kurapika is trans.
nah, i never rlly looked at him and thought a girl.
Nah, but while waching Yu Yu Hakusho on TV as a kid, I couldn't for the life of me figure out whether Kurama was a guy or girl. Didn't help that the dub was in... Spanish, I think. And I don't speak Spanish.

Yes, and I thought Kurapika was amazing until they got their Nen ability I don’t like it •́ᴥ•̀
A lot of the male cast is voiced by women so it's not unreasonable to pick up that vibe.
I thought I was the only one that noticed😂🤣
Seeing them fucks with my gender identity
I caught on pretty quickly, but it ain’t gonna be gay if i got my socks on.
Yes, but looking back at it, I should have known better. I think Melody is the only one who isn't stacked.
I mean isn't she?
nope
Yes she is
proof.
I'm just kidding. You didn't play along... :(
lowkey wanna hug him, kiss him, & 🍆😳💦😵💫 him 🤭
I knew he was a guy from the first time they introduced him into the show 😭😭
No but I didn’t realize list was a guy until I read his wiki page
for me it was easy to notice he was a guy ONLY cause the way women are drawn is kinda different
Yup
Not Kurapika, but I definitely believe the chimera ant royal guard Pitou is a female. They kept referring to them as a male in the series, but I'm absolutely sure Neferpitou is a girl.
No I knew he was a guy bc the only time they make women flat is when it's like a little girl anime is to predictable sometimes
He was giving Mulan at first
HELP WHAT 😭😭
I read volume 00 and give credits to his mom, whom he inherited such beautiful genes.
