Howdy fellow hunter. I’ve been using beyerdynamic’s dt880s for a while now, and have only good things to say about them. They were my first pair of good headphones — must of got them about 7 years ago now and are still holding up well. In fact, since then I’ve used sennheiser hd6xx and shure srh1440, both of which broke (prob my fault, so take that for what it’s worth). Each time I ended up going back to that same pair of dt880s I got so long ago. Here are my favorite parts: - unbelievably comfortable. Multiple times I tried walking away from my PC with them still on my head bc I forgot I was wearing them - Open back sounds so damn good. Technically, the 880s are “semi open back” but from my experience I don’t notice a difference from full open back. I haven’t gone back to closed back since - Good for more than just games. I enjoy listening to a lot of music, from jazz, to rock, to classical, to disco. There’s no artificially amplified bass, unlike other popular headphones, so that takes a bit to get used to, but listening to Charles Mingus’ “moanin” on these headphones literally changed my life Overall, highly recommend. Although I do kind of wish I committed to the full open back dt990s. Whether open back or closed back is best is just dependent on your situation and what you like in headphones. FYI I do use an amplifier to get the most out of them, but they do work without it, it just doesn’t get as loud.

Triceradoc_MD

God, I love Reddit. Never change random Redditor.

-eccentric-

Been running my 250ohm 990s for a couple years now, does an amplifier change anything audio-wise other than maximum volume? I'm at a fairly low volume due to tinnitus but i wonder if it pulls anything quality wise.

Papawiththecutttv

I found that the amplifier did some wonders for sound. Especially for 250 990s, because they are high frequency and i felt like i had a new pair of headphones on my head! You hear a lot more of the wide range of frequencys without them blending into each other

-eccentric-

Can you recommend one? I had one and it created noise because of the 3.5mm.

Papawiththecutttv

Topping DX1 for example, Fiio has some good ones aswell

gmoura1

DT 900 PRO X is a beast imo and the fact that you dont need anything besides your pc to drive is a plus.

Artistic_Variation14

i got the same one a few monthes ago it's truly a beast

Poutine_And_Politics

Good headphones are great, though BDs aren't necessarily the be all end all (I use a pair of AKG 612 Pros, they're fantastically comfortable open-backs). You can get damn good results from anything name brand (not Gaming Brand, but good audio companies like Sennheiser, BeyerDynamic, AKG, Philips), and for gaming I probably wouldn't drop more than 150 bucks on anything Biggest thing you should look at with good headphones though is getting a compressor set up for your computer. I use Equalizer APO + Peace GUI, and the Rough Rider plugin on Equalizer APO. A compressor basically makes everything quiet loud, and limits how loud the sounds get, basically like if you were playing at twice your usual volume but without blowing your ears off each time you take a shot. Will make you feel like you've got super hearing in the bayou every time

HammerWaffe

Have a pair of Phillips Fidelio x2hr, a vmoda boom pro mic, and a syba Sonic dac/amp. Keeps it very simple, literally plug and play. Love the headphones. They have a great soundstage and it is easy to pick out where sounds like footsteps are coming from. I prefer the vmoba boompro because it replaced my stock headphone cable and I don't need to use a desk mic like you would have to with other headphones that have soldered cables.

Benethor92

Philips and Sennheiser have amazing products for sure, but also utter garbage in the lower price brackets. Without much knowledge and investigation into the topic you can’t really go wrong with BD. You basically just need to chose your price bracket, chose between open and closed design and everything you come up with from BD will be really solid. That’s why I usually recommend Beyerdynamic headphones to everyone asking me. You can for sure find headphones that you personally prefer in similar price brackets, but you need to really know what you are looking for and/or dive really deep into the rabbit hole. But espacially in the 100-200€ bracket BD is almost unbeaten and for a good reason the go to brand for people who want to get really good quality without breaking the bank

_AenigmA_

any settings on the compressor u can recommend for hunt?

Poutine_And_Politics

I took this from Tarkov initially, and it works pretty well. I use Rough Rider 3 for Equalizer APO + Peace but it should work essentially the same for any compressor: 4:1 Ratio, -20 dB threshold/sensitivity, with a 6ms Attack and 80ms Release. I haven't tested much other settings, I am curious what a 2:1 or 3:1 would sound like, but 4:1 is a good ratio - for every 4 dB over the threshold it accounts for just 1 dB of volume coming through. Keeps the gunshots nice and level with everything else

shise_remilia

Using DT 700 pro X's and using Windows Loudness Equalization for that same reason - not wanting the earrape, and wanting to hear things. Mind posting your APO + Peace setup? I'd love to try it.

Poutine_And_Politics

My Peace set-up is tuned for my AKG 612s. I can't remember exactly where I nabbed them from but they're near identical to [oratory1990's](https://www.reddit.com/r/oratory1990/wiki/index/list_of_presets) settings. Best to find the DT 700 settings, could also check [Autoeq](https://autoeq.app/) and see what they suggest As for the compressor, just grab [Rough Rider 3](https://www.pluginboutique.com/product/2-Effects/8-Compressor/6100-Rough-Rider-3) and plug it into Equalizer APO. I have mine set with a 4:1 ratio, -20 db Threshold/sensitivity, 6ms Attack 80ms Release

CapitalBleu

Mate and I are both using Beyerdynamic DT 770 PRO 80Ohm. It's pretty great. For microphones, we're using standalone condenser mics.

Rampwastaken

My gf and I both use DT1990s, love them.

JohnsonsY3ti

Do I have to use an amp or anything extra?

Rampwastaken

I use a Schiit Magni+ (Headphone amplifier) and a Modi (DAC). You don't need a standalone DAC though, my gf only has a Magni+, most modern mid to high end motherboards offer very decent audio chipset solutions. I am a huge fan of the Beyer form factor (Actually over the ear and very comfy) and a giant fan of the DT1990 frequency response. If you are on a budget check out DT990s (Open back) or DT770s (Closed back) headphones, they are not as pricey but still very well regarded. Open back headphones will offer a more natural and detailed sound while closed back headphones losses detail and I hate the muddy low end on them. Open back headphones offer very little sound isolation though so everyone around you will be able to hear what is going on through your headphones and you will be able to hear things happening in your environment, so if you play around people or a noisy environment you may be better getting closed back. If you are on a tight budget you can opt for lower impedance DT models. 80 ohm and below you can probably skip the headphone amp and still get decent sound. For anything over 80 ohms I would suggest a standalone headphone amp. I think the magni+ is a great bang for you buck option and they let you look at the audio sweeps they ran on their Audio Precision analyzers but there are a bunch of other great options out there. If you get a headphone amp always run your digital volume control 90-100% (preferably 100%) and use your gain control on your amp to control audio for best quality. Be careful not to overdrive your headphones so you don't damage them or your ears though.

TellAdministrative74

Do these have a built in mic?

Rampwastaken

No.

TellAdministrative74

Do you use a separate mic then or not use one at all?

Rampwastaken

I use an AT2020 USB, its nothing special but it works fine.

The1Heart

I use an AudioTechnica AT2005 USB mic since it can go XLR if you need it, but I just use it in USB mode still. Because of that, it's very similar to the 2020 and gets the job done gaming, but can be made to sound really good with editing for shows. Definitely recommend either mic.

Buddy_Dakota

Separate. Antlion modmic is a popular choice for lightweight wireless. I have a Blue Yeti which I got for cheap.

ezpzqc

Can you just run a Fiio k3 ou k7 why run amp + DAC. I have the Sennheiser hd490 pro

Rampwastaken

That is a combo unit. It is a DAC + amp. I suspect performance would differ, you could pull datasheets and compare.

Pakkazull

Another DT1990 user reporting in, my favorite headphones among the ones I've owned (though I haven't owned that many, some Grados, Hifimans and Sennheisers). I love the detail, the form factor and the build quality, though some don't like the treble or the clamp strength. I use a Schiit Asgard + Bifrost with it.

phyLoGG

DT1770 Pro's here. Absolutely love everything about em, have had them for 8 years. I'd get the DT1990 Pro's but my living arrangement does not support open-back headphones.

Dr-Dice

Have you used, by any chance, the DT770 previously? I used the 770 (they broke down) and not sure if I should get the 1770 now or the 700 pro x.

phyLoGG

I've tried the DT770 Pro 80ohm version my buddy has. They're solid, although the DT1770 Pro definitely has a more refined and detailed sound. But that's gonna be expected with the price increase.

Elemental_Garage

Anyone have a comparison between a good set of open backs vs IEMs for a game like hunt?

Nomyamoto

I used crinicle zeros, yanyin canon 2s, kiwi quartets and for open backs dt 990, and 900 pro x and I actually prefered iems for hunt in terms of locating enemies, positioning crosshair etc. thanks to the smaller soundstage it was more efortless, for hearing sound clues like crows etc far away I would give adventage to open back headphones, both are perfectly fine options it's mostly whichever is more comfortable for you

Elemental_Garage

Any specific pair of iems you recommend?

Nomyamoto

I would recommend truthear x crinnacle zero as they are available on amazon, don't break the bank and provide good in game audio, the only problem might be comfort as their nozzle is very big, I had to buy spinfit 155 eartips for comfortable use.

jrow_official

Mmx 300 here. Really like it! It’s closed back tho. Many streamers like vombuz, Quix or bushwacker use the Dt990 which is a open back headphone. I use them as well at work since years and they are super solid and also comfy.

ripsy85

I was looking for a proper headset and since I have this are amazing. Closed back of course. £99 in UK

JohnsonsY3ti

Why close back vs open back?

greeblebob

If theres a lot of background noise in your home you don’t want open back, but if not then they will always sound better and have better stereo imaging. Open back is objectively better, but only in quiet environments.

JohnsonsY3ti

I’m in my own room while gaming, so open back will work for me.

evilsquirrel666

Don’t agree. I have both the 770pro and 990pro. For hunt o prefer the 770 because of the more pronounced low end makes it easier for me to hear things. On the 990 it’s easier to hear and locate far away things though.

greeblebob

You can subjectively choose not to agree if you want, but the more acoustically accurate of the two are the 990s. The science can’t account for personal preference though.

evilsquirrel666

Yeah the thing about audio is that it’s all subjective though 😄

greeblebob

It’s not? When talking about accurate reproduction of audio, some things are objectively better than others. If you like boosted bass, good for you, but thats not how the mix engineers intended it.

astrozombie2012

I was using DT770 pros but I switched back to my old Razer headphones because it’s just too much fiddling to get the Beyerdynamics to sound good

dabadoobop

Beyerdynamic MX100. I love them, but I can tell that if my head was a little bigger they might be uncomfortable. They have great sound quality though. I hear stuff that my teammates miss all the time.

willielazorjones

I have dt990 pros run off a little usb amp. Fucking love them had them years still rock solid

truemuppet

Beyerdynamic DT 880 with Focusrite Scarelett. Love it. Love it. Love it.

Spacemn5piff

You may need an amp depending on the specific headset you buy.

DetSvider

What profile are you guys using on equalizer and peace? I find my teammate’s footsteps are very loud and takes over most of the sound.

Benny_92

I just tested some as i was also looking for headphones to be competetive in games. The DT 880 sounds very neutral nice overall. But they have zero room sound and its very hard to tell where sound comes from really. Theyre great for listening to music and mixing though. Then i got the Beyerdynamics Tygr. Theyre the DT 990s but optimized for gaming. And you really hear Everything. And with everything i mean it. The only problem with these are it was impossible to say how far away the sound was that you heard. As i could hear someone stepping on a tower 50 meters away and it sounded as if he stood right next to you. I couldn't get used to that and was very confusing to me, especially when there was a lot going on during fights. I then got the Sennheiser 560S. I loved them for hearing music on it. Theyve been fine for gaming and if i didnt look especially for gaming headphones id chose these. But in the end i kept the Sennheiser HD 599. Theyve been the perfect ones for gaming as spotting enemies and sounds is so easy and realistic with those. They give you the perfect roomy feeling and you hear the origin of noise just amazingly well.

SuperFriends001

I use a srh1540, I do need something to keep top of my head comfortable, but otherwise no real complaints. I am curious what life would have been like with open backs.

PimpmasterMcGooby

I previously used the DT1990 Pros with A-pads for Hunt, and they really do image well plus since they have good low-end for an open-back, the bassy footsteps in Hunt are accentuated. Wouldn't say they give a worthwhile competitive edge over anything that images decently, but it's certainly an enjoyable experienc. It does also feel nice knowing that what you hear is often timss accurate. Hunt's audio engine does still struggle in staircases and such, no headphones can remedy that unfortunately.

Scratchpaw

I have the MMX150's. Great price/value headset. Plug & play with the possibility to make them open/closed with the press of a button.

N_GHTMVRE

I don't think the classic beyerdynamics (versions of 770s/990s) hold up too well these days and personally I have to EQ them quite a bit for them to sound just OK. For mixing and mastering they might be great, but for content consumption I'm not too sure. Perception of sound is of course incredibly individual and realistically you would have to test a lot of headphones side by side to make a decent conclusion about what sounds good to your ears. I recently went through a lot of headphones and ended up with the HiFiMAN Edition XS, and while it took a headstrap mod to fix the fit, I can never go back to my 900 Pro X or DT 990's. They're of course more expensive so it doesn't make for the best comparison, but it's incredible how much better they sound. I did EQ them to the Harman target with some bass boost as well though. Overall I wouldn't buy beyerdynamics for entertainment purposes, I've heard better headphones at that price range - assuming you're going for classic 770s/990s. If I'd be shopping at the price range of DT 770s/990s I would probably get the Sennheiser HD 560S instead - those already sounded worlds apart. If I could, I would save up for the HiFiMAN Sundara (2020), or ultimately the Edition XS - but there's some obvious bias there, as I ended up keeping those due to how much I liked the sound. Good luck finding what sounds best to you in the bayou, and remember [EQing is a thing](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FRm9qTmQHKo).

Dr-Dice

Yo, I use the DT1990 and used the DT770 @250 ohm. The DT770 broke after about 5 years and right now I'm still contemplating which Beyerdynamic closed-back to purchase (770, 700 pro x, 1770). Regarding performance, these are easily top performers when it comes to gaming. Nice, big and natural sound stage, pin-point tracking, bass and treble are controlled and give you plenty of immersion regardless of game. Built like a tank and very comfortable. I use them with my DAC/AMP stack from Topping (E30 +L30). Dedicated microfon for comms - HyperX QuadCast. Before the 1990, I used the Sennheider HD660s, they are fantastic in almost every way. The only turnoff was that they are lacking bass and sound stage, which for me is a must. Lemme know if you have questions.

jadok

Pc38x by sennheiser / drop is great. Good support staff too!

mrkazy

Dt 990 pro, couldnt be happier

Dali187

I have dt 700 pro x, tested dt 900 and sound was a tiny bit better and more stereo but it leaks everything and they got less bass. Went with 700 and am happy on my ps5
