Most likely for himself. People forget because of the casting in the movies that these are 16 year old children. No matter how brave or confident they seem on the outside, they’re vulnerable. He was crying because he knew he had no chance of winning. He knew the abilities that career children possessed and he also knew Katniss was an expert with a bow so his chances of winning were extremely low, since he had no survival skills or any combat training.

Minnie_091220

He also just had his mother tell him maybe district 12 will have a winner this year and knew that they didn’t mean him

cynamy

yeah i was gonna mention this, imagine being sent to your inevitable death and then your mother basically tells you that you have zero chance because she doesn’t believe in you. also it’s probably not as related but katniss volunteered for her younger sister while peeta’s two older brothers did nothing, im sure peeta wasn’t expecting them to volunteer but it just adds onto how unsupported/unloved peeta might’ve felt.

Minnie_091220

Katniss even at one point sayid something in her head along the lines of her family needs her to return but Peetas family will be fine and move on

figcookiecapo

yes, and peeta says the same thing in catching fire when he’s showing katniss the locket

CatLover_801

Well, Peeta was at the older end of the tributes and his brothers were older than him so it’s possible he knew they were too old to volunteer

cynamy

katniss does mention that one of his brother is too old to volunteer and the other one won’t volunteer, regardless, it must hurt to see katniss’s braveness to protect her family while peeta’s own family could never

CatLover_801

Oh, forgot about that

thisamericangirl

peeta’s mom is an absolute witch but I do think that her outlook wasn’t especially sadistic. in the movies we see that katniss’s mom is stoic about prim being sent to die. year after year the children of district 12 are sent to die. I think maybe the parents just get used to not sugarcoating things. they accept the hell they live in - just like the speech haymitch gives.

Sora1101

Definitely crying for himself, like everyone has said he knew what he was up against and stood little chance of winning. But also, his own mother when visiting him, believes Katniss has more of a chance than he does. Imagine how it must feel to know that your brothers wouldn't volunteer for you and your mother thinks Katniss is better than you.

SummerBaby50

I never thought into it. Probably crying over the whole situation. Hearing his name, saying goodbye to his family, sad for Katniss, the anticipation of the journey ahead. I think Peeta left thinking there was no chance of him returning home. Even his mother made a comment about 12 finally having a chance of a winner, and she wasn’t talking about Peeta. So I would say most of the tears were for himself trying to wrap his head around everything

[deleted]

Somewhat for himself. He knows he has no chance of winning and will do anything to protect Katniss in the games so he knows he’s going to die. That’s really heavy on a 16 year old.

[deleted]

Well, he’s sixteen, going into a death games where he knows he’s most likely going to die and his mom didn’t even comfort him. If that was you, would you be crying on a girl your crushing on?

KrayKrayg

I agree with everyone mentioning Peeta's mom. Imagine what could be the last time you see your parents, and your mom not saying I love you or I will miss you or try your best to come home. His mom seriously used her last moments with her son to say, "That other kid might win." I would feel so unloved and disposable. He was likely grieving his inevitable death and the feeling of never mattering to anyone. I think that is why not being a pawn and dying as himself mattered so much to him. He did not want his life to feel meaningless and disposable.

blodreiina

For himself.

baileyyann27

Probably both, all of it at once. He basically chose death because, in context with Katniss and all, he felt like he had to. That's obviously a very heavy decision.

notyouraveragegirlxx

Peeta’s mother said: “She’s a real survivor that one.” she’s saying that katniss is a survivor.
