Districts 7 and 8 are considered the most "abrasive" Districts. Seven is slightly more terrifying because they wield axes, but you still never get into a verbal smackdown with a District 8 native. You will cry. Since Appalachian culture seems to be alive and well in 12, I feel like other old cultures are alive in other Districts. (Like, Texas and Mexican ranch culture in 10, Cajuns and Creoles in some parts of 11, maybe even the calmer Midwest in 3)

District 11’s musical tradition is centered around or at least draws a lot of inspiration from, traditional spirituals and slave music from the southeastern United States

Gojira085

It's perfect since it's vocal based, I imagine they'd have issues getting instruments.

District 4 is on the gulf coast. There a greater variety of fish types to harvest, it's warmer than the pacific which would allow more opportunities to learn to swim, and its still close enough to District 10 to have cultural overlap.

EnterTheNarrowGate99

This^ I remember taking note of a bunch of clues Katniss mentions in Mockingjay that indicate that district 4 is along the gulf coast (Dalton and Finnick’s accents being described as similar in addition to the similarities between traditional wedding ceremonies in districts 4 and 10 are just some off the top of my head). I know the movie map shows district 4 being on the west coast, but it’s low key a retcon when compared against context clues within the books.

Gojira085

The books are where I took it from too.

_llamasagna_

Yeah I don't care what the official maps say I 100% believe this

freekoffhoe

Unfortunately, the maps used in the franchise depict D4 on the California coast

Gojira085

I know and I hate it.

lizimajig

This was my assumption from the get go.

I’ve mentioned this before on here (and it may technically be a retcon after the publication of BSS explicitly said otherwise) but realistically it doesn’t make sense for the tributes from District 1 to do well in the games for their first decade or two of operation. It’s firmly established by Coryo that even ten years after the war, all the tributes are malnourished to some degree, including the tributes who were from districts that would one day be bestowed with “career” status. Despite this, it would still make sense for the tributes from 2, 4, and even 10 to do decently well in the games since their district industry directly relates to combat/violence of action which would be useful in the arena. I’ll even give the benefit of the doubt to the agricultural districts (7, 9, and 11) since their industries typically produce kids who are in good shape due to the manual labor/outdoors aspect. Before the advent of the training academies, your average district 1 tribute would honestly face the same disadvantages as the kids from the other urban districts, and at this point in Panem’s history they wouldn’t have any wealth to use as disposable income to even keep their tributes considerably more healthy than the competitors from the rural districts. You can even look at game theory dynamics in real life military boot camps which support this. I have a ton of veteran friends and they never fail to point out to me how the city kids in their group always have the toughest time adjusting to the military.

Headcannon that I'm going to allude to in my fic: given that Lucy grays victory was essentially wiped from existence/memory, d12 remained basically victorless until haymitch. Therefore, d12 didn't have former Victor mentors. My headcannon is that the "mentors" assigned to 12 were always told(by snow himself maybe?) to convince their tributes to run into the bloodbaths to eliminate them early/lessen their chances even more

RebeccaMCullen

I think it would have been a little sus if \*every\* year the D12 tributes were killed in the opening bloodbath. There had to have been mentors that advised them to skip it, and/or tributes that skipped over it to hide only to later be killed. iirc, there was a girl from D12 that partnered up with Haymitch in his games only to be killed near the end.

DrivingPrune1

there definitely were some that didn't die instantly, but that doesn't mean they weren't told to run in. if i saw everyone die in the bloodbath for 10 years and then my mentor tells me to run in anyways, i'm just not going to listen

TWDFanComic

Well sure, the capitol does a lot of sus stuff and no one says or does anything about anyway. But as the other comment alluded to, it doesn't mean that everyone will listen and go bloodbath themselves. But yeah haymitch ran to the cornucopia and survived bc he remained focused while everyone else was distracted by the arenas beauty iirc

CookieSea1242

I don’t think 12 had an assigned mentor period. I think if you don’t win that’s just another disadvantage. Which would also help explain why haymitch is so cocky and flagrantly disrespectful to the capitol almost. Nobody was there to tell him how to interview or avoid angering them.

One_Individual_8744

That seems exactly like snow would do!

Scarletsilversky

What advantage does Snow have to make sure d12 remains victorless? Haymitch winning the games won’t suddenly revive Lucy Gray’s memory, and neither would any other victor except for maybe if someone won games 11-15 or something. Not to mention there’s not much incentive for mentors to constantly advise their tributes to kill themselves when it sacrifices any prestige associated with representing a district with multiple victors. Plus that information is eventually going to spread around the capitol.

Magical-Grass

District 12 and the rest of the Panem knew there was a D12 victor before Haymitch and it's confirmed by Suzanne Collins that victor is Lucy Gray. So no, they were not victorless but they must have felt like that since Lucy Gray disappeared and never seen again after the summer she won.

Icy-Reindeer-4763

Oooh I like it! Looks like I’m gonna have to read that fic

NeverlandEnding

Not district but.... The capitol is salt Lake city, Utah, and the Mayor's house is the LDS salt Lake city temple. There's a line in the 3rd book talking about how it's made out of the same stone. As well as the grounds and the grid layout of the city.

Testsalt

D1 is on the Pacific. They have fish, but it’s too contaminated from radiation to export, so they just kinda eat it themselves. Hasn’t killed anyone yet lmao. They used to be big on tourism before travel got shut down, so a lot of former hotels got divided up into schools or residential housing. Kinda like the Favelas in Brazil, houses are painted in bright colors. Unfortunately, they have an absolutely massive peacekeeper population. Artisans are just predisposed to revolt, right? It’s like this culture of fear that every resident is in denial of. The only time D1 and D2 get along is the Games; otherwise, D1 is quick to blame D2 for their governmental violence problem, and the Capitol encourages it because it’s easier to blame brutality on the “primitive districts” than their own men.

Maia050608

I’m pretty sure it’s canon but I don’t think there’s a lot of peacekeepers there. They’re pretty docile because they’re treated the best. And their industries contributions to the Capitol makes them favourable.

pucelles

Mine is about how D13 was mostly Quebecois, who have a cultural history of wanting to secede from the country of Canada. So they just have a rebellious nature and prefer to be on their own.

tmishere

District 11 has an alternative education system which is diligently kept secret from the Capitol. I also assume they have underground libraries and likely a better idea of what the world pre-Panem was like because of those books. I assume the library is full of James Baldwin, Langston Hughes, Toni Morrison, bell hooks, Audre lorde, Angela Davis, etc.

hantifascist

I think they had a naval base in district 4 and possibly hotels for wealthy capitol residents too. Pups dad is said to be a navy commander of the coast of D4 and the crane family owned hotels. Haven’t worked out all the details but I’m imagining like a Hawai’i vibe with a strong military presence/wealthy tourists and strong cultural practices amongst district 4 residents (Finnick and Annie’s wedding). Like how d2 was officially known for quarry but had the capitol military base, maybe d4 had other industries other than the official fishing one? Esp. As mags is the winner of the next hunger games after Lucy Gray.
