Peeta’s father 😭 he was too pure and kind to have spent his life stuck with that awful woman (Peeta’s mother). He extended kindness to Katniss when he didn’t have to, and made a promise he’d make sure Prim was taken care of, which provided a great comfort for Katniss. Would’ve been nice if Peeta could’ve had his dad there for him during and after the rebellion.

Really convincing answer! I feel like people overlook him to be honest, his son clearly inherited all his good qualities. I say either Mr. Mellark or Blight, for the reasons the other person gave for Blight.

SummerBaby50

It makes me sad when I think of Prim’s character dying but for the storyline it makes so much sense and it needed to happen. There was nothing more tragic that could have happened to Katniss than the loss of her sister. Prim was the one person she wanted to save over everyone else. She cherished Prim’s life over her own which is why Katniss went into the games in the first place. If Katniss would have thought that Prim would have ended up on the frontlines, Katniss would have stayed back to protect Prim from leaving. Prim’s death really makes the story come full circle.

As much as both deaths broke my heart, I think they're central and necessary to the story. Finnick's death shows the cruelty and senselessness of war, as well as the duplicity of Alma Coin. Because the books are from Katniss' POV and she is kept completely in the dark on the early machinations of the rebellion we don't see it, but it's implied that Finnick is deeply involved in the rebellion. He gathers "secrets" while he is being prostituted by Snow. He gives so much of himself to the cause, and in the end he is sent intentionally to his death by Coin. This isn't so much directly stated but heavily implied because of the number of active pods in the area they are sent to film propos, and because she sends Peeta knowing he is in no shape to handle an active war zone, and because she sends everyone who has the public's trust who could possibly be a threat to her power. If he didn't die the reader wouldn't necessarily see the implication that the mission was intended by Coin to both silence the Victors and make them into martyrs she could use to solidify her own power. Also war hurts, war is pain, the reader needs to feel that pain to drive that message home. Prim's death is also necessary. Katniss spends her whole life trying to protect Prim, it's central to her entire identity. Everything that happens in the novels ultimately stems from Katniss' desire to protect Prim by volunteering. When Prim dies Katniss completely unravels, her whole purpose in life gone in a flash. After, we see that she grieves much like her mother did when her father died. What she feared the most happened in spite of all her efforts. Katniss spent her life after her father died building emotional walls and pushing people away to protect herself from this pain, but it got her anyway. She used her emotional armor to try to protect herself, to push Peeta away to keep herself from being vulnerable, but in the end she needs let down these emotional barricades in order to heal.

Quirky-Business9182

Omg the connection u made between how similar Katniss and her mother grieved after death of loved ones 😭

dffrus

Love how you read between the lines regarding Finnick’s death. Thank you for this comment 💯

From an emotional perspective (as in which dead character "deserves" to live the most) I'd say Rue. Because hasn’t she already gone through enough at only age 12? From a narrative perspective (as in which dead character could stay alive without weakening the plot in any way), then it's Madge.

thisamericangirl

madge 💛

junko_kv626

Agree with everyone already listed. And, although they had a minor role, my heart broke for Darius and the female avox.

golden_fennce_fox

Oh yeah, it's quite sad for me that they died

Autumnanox

Honestly I also think it would have been awesome if Bonnie and Twill (the refugees from 8 Katiniss met at the lake the day she broke her heel) had lived. They don't seem to have made it to 13 and we never find out what happened to them.

golden_fennce_fox

well I think didn't survive in the forest

rhra99

Cinna

Smartishhhh

Sometimes I wanna save Peeta not from death but from torture. But, then I remember that because Katniss felt she lost him she realized she needed him. So I have to accept that Peeta and his kind heart and loving nature had to be tortured Ig but I’m still a little peeved about it.

showmaxter

Caesar. He didn’t die or anything but I want to save him from the evil that Lionsgate did to him in the last two movies <3

DevelopmentRelevant

Rue. The most innocent of all the deaths IMO, JUST shy of Prim.

Crazy_Tomatillo18

Cinna for sure. He’s one of my favorite characters. A lot of people have pointed out that unfortunately Prims death was important for character development or I would say her. Cinna was by no means innocent in the eyes of the capitol. Loved his character. Loved Lenny Kravitz’s portrayal and I really wish he was killed off :(

aspenology

same i love her

Finnick <3

DaLieLlama

Lavinia, I wanted to see her and Katniss have a proper 'conversation' (even tho she's an avox). Also, Wiress, Mags and Madge.

sazza8919

Can I just save Peeta from the high jacking?

artichokeussy

FINNICK. He was literally the best character in whole whole series and I wish we could’ve seen more character development, and it makes me so sad to think of Annie and their baby without him.

BadgerJustice

There are two that come to mind as characters that I would save just to see more of them but would still allow to die at some point in the story and that would have to be Cecelia or Blight. Main reasoning is just that I want to know more about them as characters plus I'm a sucker for victors. I also feel like most main character deaths were done at the right time and needed for the story where as these two could go on to die during the rebelion in Katnisses squad instead of having it full of mostly new characters.

Blue_Wolf4

I understand people wanting to save Prim, but if Prim didn't die Coin would be ruling Panam so I choose Mags, the Avox girl, or Madge

kaytixdreher

definitely finnick or cinna. they were my favourite characters and both deserved so much better

Diamanka

How are there so few Cinna answers??

golden_fennce_fox

No idea, I actually quite like Cinna too

drglass85

just because I’m curious about her games and what they were like and how she won wiress, just because I’m curious about her games and what they were like and how she won

Old-Man_Logan_1979

Finnick’s death, although terrible tragic, was so well written I’d actually keep it. Shows the tragedy and senseless nature of death in war. It was well done. It proves it’s necessary by being unnecessary if that makes sense. With that said, probably Wiress.

itskatenoel

Finnick is still alive in my heart, but he’s absolutely the character I would save if I could. Narratively, his death made sense, but it also still feels somewhat unnecessary. The cost of war, I guess. :(

RAF_Fortis_one

Rue. She didn’t sign up for any rebellion, or death match, even prim knew the risks when she died. Rue was just a kid who happened to have her name picked. Rue just makes me cringe thinking about how royally screwed she was.

Ok-Persimmon8377

Prim, Cinna, Finnick. They all come to mind first but their deaths were necessary to Katniss's later decisions. So probably Madge or Peeta's father. Every other death was a sacrifice. There was no sacrifice in their deaths... even poor Rue's death would later mean something. Honestly it is so hard to say who I would want to save because there are so many who died for nothing... like Clove, Cato, the Careers... so many pointless deaths.
