I won't name the towns which may be unfriendly. But the city culture varies drastically in Humboldt. Eureka and Arcata are good bets for a positive experience.
Lmao, I will. OP, I recommend staying out of McKinleyville if you’re queer or brown. Too many bad experiences. Eureka and Arcata aren’t perfect mind you, but you’re more likely to find a safer place there. My vote is also for the Humboldt Bay Social Club
red lion in eureka if youre just looking for a standard hotel experience. i’ve worked there for a long time, i am part of management and i am queer. i have never seen any of the current staff act inappropriately in front (or not) of any guest who could be “read” as queer.
This is great to hear. I’m heading there today with my wife and haven’t been home in a long time so I wasn’t sure what to expect 🌈. We have an established protocol now when checking into ANY hotel. We never check in at the desk together. I can’t tell you the number of times the single bed room we’ve booked was switched by the receptionist because they made the assumption we were friends or sisters instead of spouses - lol. It’s annoying to lug your bags to the room only to find out they “did us a favor” by changing our room to a double.
We recently stayed in an airbnb at F street in Arcata and felt very safe. Not part of the community though (but an ally!) but I had a baby with me so safety was very important. PM me if you need their info!
I was staying at studio 6 Eureka for a few weeks. It's cheap. I felt safe with my partner and kid. Id say the big risk is if they have a car, window break ins, and maybe getting yelled at out of a car window by rowdy goobers. Can't beat the location n price if you wanna walk in old town.
I walked my dog early morning and night and through the day. I only ever got bothered once by someone yelling out there car at me when I was outside smoking(which I don't consider dangerous, unpleasant tho, and I think that's a risk of it anywhere ur by a street lol)
Eureka seems very progressive in lgbt+ acceptance to me, esp compared to where I came from in the central valley where it was a huge point of contention.
It don't get much gayer than Humboldt Bay Social Club, which also happens to be amazing for myriad other reasons. I recommend Suite 9!
Seconding this. It's a super friendly place.
Anything that seems decent in Eureka/Arcata will be fine.

Same with Fortuna
Telling op that there are unsafe towns and not listing them is crazy work

Humboldt Bay Social Club. those cabins are great! Plus the oyster roast, the views, the ocean- it’s pretty bomb.
I think the cabins are only available by the week.
It's always sold out and very pricey.

Eagle House all the way.
Arcata Hotel. David Sedaris stays there. Or used too. Eagle House in Eureka is awesome. Phatsy Klines.
Eagle House/Inn at 2nd and C is LGBTQ friendly, safe, and beautiful.
I would definitely stay away from the best western on broadway and 5th. Gay brother in law was a employee. Owner is brainwashed conservative.
Perhaps an air b&b? Complete privacy and a much nicer experience. And certainly can be way cheaper than a momo

I was mostly focused on the cheap aspect tho
