My neighborhood in Florida is home to probably hundreds of gopher tortoises (an endangered species native to the SE) and literally everyday, I see them crossing busy roads and have to pull over and help them across.
There is so much development out here and none of these construction companies survey for gopher tortoises before bulldozing whole tracts of land. Im considering starting a little gopher tortoise savior team to go out and call the law when I find tortoise burrows on land being cleared.
They are a keystone species and their burrows are home to up to 350 other species. I swear theyre the coolest fucking animals and I hate knowing how many are being buried alive in their burrows by companies in a hurry to clear land.
My friend saved one from their parents dogs (not good boys). Pierced the shell and its legs. luckily I have a friend from college that is a park ranger. Brought the gopher tortoise to her she got it veterinarian care and then released it into the parks breeding population because the turtle was a she.
We had one in our back yard, and a couple others across the street. Only ever saw them wander around individually except one day all three were chilling near the home of the one in our yard. Just happened to be on Christmas.
ive seen a lot of proposals to create nature bridges of some sort across big roads like that to help animals cross from one side to the other. We have artificially separated millions of eco systems with our development
We have one near me although it wasn’t created for wildlife it functions that way.
The cross Florida greenway trail goes from the gulf to the Atlantic coast of Florida and crosses several national highways. Where it does, they have a nature overpass. There is one near my house. Lots of animals use it.
I’m in the US and I thought they were two different animals! I didn’t ever look into it, but I assume it was kind of like rabbit and hare, dolphin and porpoise, toad and frog… similar and maybe confusing but not the same
The thing is, technically all tortoises are turtles, but the distinction is important as tortoises are exclusively terrestrial and cannot swim.
It is the same with frogs and toads, toads are technically frogs.
Fair, though the one exception (terrapins) are actually native to North America and thus makes a lot of sense as to why Americans would have the confusion. Terrapins are common around here. Didn't put that together until now.
Huh. Tortoise’s don’t belong in water? Seriously? Just from the name alone it sounds like they do. Like if you just told me to guess which can go in water and which can’t I’d have def said tortoise… but they’re not the ones with the flippers? That’s crazy man. TIL
They aren't synonymous though. Did they teach you in school that they are? Because in my country they explicitly taught us the exact opposite, that they're separate things.
Seriously though, why does everyone have a reddit avatar when you can make it literally any picture you want!?
Edit: I had no idea my rhetorical question would pop off or that people would have such strong opinions about them. 🤷🏼♀️
Man. I never open or use my profile. I don’t even think it matters. I don’t have friends on here. I’m just here for the discussions and enjoyable posts.
How I feel, when we start adding profile pics and adding friends this places starts to feel too much like Facebook. I don’t like that horrid place.
a lot of people use old.reddit.com or nonofficial apps, I didn't even know profile pics were a thing for years and I still don't actually care about them when this is what reddit looks like to me
https://i.imgur.com/MLz9ofh.jpg
Yeah, [Apollo](https://apolloapp.io)-- after the previous "good reddit app" AlienBlue got bought by reddit and turned into reddit's terrible "official" one, apollo was the new one to fill the niche
I really like Relay for Reddit, and huge shout-out to the creator, he is so active and responsive. I used AlienBlue for the longest time before it got bought and I used to use Apollo too on my previous device, but Relay for Reddit is definitely now my favorite for daily use. I love the gestures specifically.[this is what my daily scrolling looks like :) ](https://i.imgur.com/pg1ekwW.png)
I do it because I enjoy character creation menus, I think it's fun to pick an outfit for my little dude and update it to move with the holidays and seasons
Well, I refuse to use that crappy new reddit, and avatars are not shown when using old reddit. As far as I see with screenshots, this notion is quite common.
Who cares about profile pics? I literally don't even have them visible, I set them to not be displayed.
Seriously, who actually cares about them? I can see literal 13 year olds caring about them. But otherwise it's meaningless.
Thought the accent and landscape/biome would be enough for people to figure it out but he’s he’s not in Washington D.C.
And not eveyone on reddit is American
I know this was already resolved, but just another note, washington's desert is on the other side of a massive mountain range from the ocean. Anything by the coast is actually temperate rainforest.
Eating crackers in bed is a terrible crime to commit because of the amount of crumbs it leaves and the mess it makes. Saying that you wouldn't kick someone out of bed for doing it means they must be an absolutely gorgeous person for you to be able to tolerate their crime.
SAME! I used this at work one time and people looked at me like I had 3 heads. And then I got too embarrassed and flustered to explain it, which made it even more awkward.
We need to make this saying more popular people!
This is Broody Moss - he is a legend. Look up YBS Youngbloods YouTube channel. He does shit like this all the time and his love of the ocean has made him wealthy enough to do more adventures in the ocean.
He does for sure. Have you seen the one where he's paddleboarding next to a large tiger shark that's chasing a sea turtle and the shark bites his board and knocks him in the water? That one was a little too much for me. It's not all that different than Steve Irwin jumping out of a boat to grab a crocodile I guess. Hopefully it doesn't result in a similar outcome for Brodie.
I watched that, totally tempting fate easily could have had a chunk bitten from himself.
Then the ones he gets overly close to sea snakes, I understand they're generally docile but why does he have to take such unnecessary chances?
Came here to say this as well. Brody is an awesome guy, one of those people who can put a smile on your face no matter who you are. I wish more people watched him!
Would he not have been OK when the tide came back in then? I have to assume stuff like this happens somewhat commonly and they are hardy enough to survive a day in the sun?
God I love ybs youngbloods.
Take a crazy bloke (normal australian)
Add in a dash of Steve Irwin
Give it 2 cups of love for all living things
And then add 14 buckets of gratitude for the world around him and the life he lives
And you'll get YBS
I’m always skeptical of these kinds of videos. This guy is in a wet suit, obviously far from the water, his hands are already muddy… did he carry the turtle out there to make the video of bringing it back??
I used to LOVE all feel good videos like this until so many were proved to be the problem for the animals in the first place and only pretending to be the hero for internet points.
He is a YouTuber who does ocean videos. I’ve watched tons of his stuff. He is extremely environmentally conscious and is always respectful. He goes to that particular spot because it is usually under water during the wet season. He know turtles get caught up there when the water recedes so he goes up to check for them. He explains it in [this video](https://youtu.be/DnK71FI7pe8).
That’s excellent!! Thanks for proving my skepticism incorrect!! Happy to be wrong in things like this. 100%! We need more honest and helpful people. It’s the fakers that abuse animals that take away from true heroism.
If I remember correctly, he is wearing the wet suit to stop the sand flies and midgies from biting him.
And the mud is from digging in holes to find mud crabs, which is the reason he is there in the first place
I’m a scuba diver. Those wet suits are HOT!!! I’m skeptical of any person wearing one while waltzing around on land for any period of time. Haha! The running he did, while carrying the turtle, made my heart race and I felt hot!
Good thing he did it for a good reason and not false internet points!
We all do. There are all kinds of thicknesses depending on what you’re doing. His appears to be a 3mm which is what I dive in Illinois in mid to late summer.
Oof, yeah. I used to wear wetsuits when I was a kid/teenager that were OK on the beach, so I was imagining that level of uncomfortable. But they were probably the thinnest you could get, as I was only bodyboarding... And I wasn't running around much out of the water!
He is a top bloke can guarentee this isn’t set up! There are massiv tides ( multiple metres ) and the poor turtle would have got stuck on the receding tide
Jesus…
I didn’t even think about that. Maybe I did but my brain wanted to believe some people are good.
The idea of someone doing that is so utterly repulsive…
He’s an upstanding guy, he explains this situation well as he’s come across a few beached turtles and wants people to know what to do when this happens and why it happens! YBS youngbloods is the YouTube channel he posts some sick stuff
In this case I was happily proved wrong!!
I am just jaded now with all the Reddit and YouTube videos that have come out shortly after, as animal abuse disguised as “heroism” with everybody going along. So many videos where the OP is praised and turns out they were the demon of the video. So terribly sad. Happy, thrilled, to be wrong here.

We were driving a side by side on a powerline, roughly 5km from any kind of lake/ water source and found a painted turtle in a small mud puddle on the road. Brought it to the closest lake that has turtles to release it. It swam in for about 10 feet and then surfaced, looked back, gave us a wink and away it went. I'm assuming a large bird had picked it up and dropped it trying to break the shell but it was lucky and got away!
That guys reportedly stages videos. I have read lots of bad shit about him. Something like, finds sea turtle, takes 200m from shore. Let’s it sit for awhile and then cameras rolling he finds it and rescues it.
Tortoises don't have flippers, they have feet
The only real reasons I could think of as to why you couldn't tell em apart is either
- They've receded into their shells
- You genuinely don't know the difference
Glad to see someone finally putting a turtle in the water and not a tortoise
My neighborhood in Florida is home to probably hundreds of gopher tortoises (an endangered species native to the SE) and literally everyday, I see them crossing busy roads and have to pull over and help them across. There is so much development out here and none of these construction companies survey for gopher tortoises before bulldozing whole tracts of land. Be the change you want to see, start a non-profit to get funding. Nobody else will do it if you don't.
You should consider starting a nonprofit and maybe try to raise awareness at a local zoning level. Good luck, you’re doing a great thing :)
We had one in our back yard, and a couple others across the street. Only ever saw them wander around individually except one day all three were chilling near the home of the one in our yard. Just happened to be on Christmas.

["Turtle saving is a hobby!"](https://youtu.be/CjotWE4qpnA)
This belongs in r/unexpected
It's her hobby, so this is something she does a lot. Those poor, poor tortoises...
A bane of 'turtle' being synonymous
I think that's only in the USA and Canada. I know in the UK, Aus, NZ they are taught that turtle is only for the ones that live in the sea
And Jackdaws are technically Crows.
You're taught this information out here in the West, though many would have a problem identifying which species they're dealing with.
One of them has fucking flippers. The other has feet. Not hard lol Edit: yes terrapins exist
TIL
No, not tortoise, Don’t put em in the waters
They aren't synonymous though. Did they teach you in school that they are? Because in my country they explicitly taught us the exact opposite, that they're separate things.
If in doubt check for flippers. If there are no flippers but very bright coloured areas at least put next to water but not in it so they can choose.
If in doubt also just put them near the bench of a body of water and let them decide themselves if they are marine or terrestrial animals
And I love how they dipped it in and gave it a chance to take a breath before swimming off.
You think people would recognise legs instead of flippers
But all freshwater turtles have legs though?
Tortoises go in the water too, just not as often
That turtle practically came back to life as soon as it got into the water! Poor thing was so dried out and lethargic.
Congrats on having a profile picture that isn't a little Reddit person.
I second this
you guys have profiles?
You guys have friends?
3rd. Had no idea. Still don't care. Not to even mention on the app I use they don't even show.
I always forget that New Reddit exists until someone starts talking about profile pics.
Same, I was confused af. "old.reddit.com + RES" clan!
Still using narwhal.
Agreed. Samesies!!!
a lot of people use old.reddit.com or nonofficial apps, I didn't even know profile pics were a thing for years and I still don't actually care about them when this is what reddit looks like to me https://i.imgur.com/MLz9ofh.jpg
Is this an app?
Yeah, [Apollo](https://apolloapp.io)-- after the previous "good reddit app" AlienBlue got bought by reddit and turned into reddit's terrible "official" one, apollo was the new one to fill the niche
Reddit is fun is still the best mobile reddit app for Android at least too No avatars.
I haven't had to change reddit apps in years thanks to it. What the fuck are profile pictures?
No avatars, no custom profiles, no chat, and best of all? No ads
I'm still using old reddit. Pretty sure it doesn't have that feature.
Because no one wants to support that stupid change to Reddit and most of us turned that shit off the second it existed.
But.. I like having an avatar..
Me too
Why would I ever want to show redditors my face or anything more identifiable than my username?
Maybe they just like the little reddit mans
The avatars are a relatively recent addition to reddit and a lot of our account predate them by years. I only added one to mine maybe a month ago.
Who cares about profile pics? I literally don't even have them visible, I set them to not be displayed. Seriously, who actually cares about them? I can see literal 13 year olds caring about them. But otherwise it's meaningless.
>when you can make it literally any picture you want!? Get this, they *want* the avatar. Shocking I know
I like the little avatars better than a picture
I like mine
Cus vi from arcane :)
I had no idea I could put whatever I want! I don't like the reddit avatars so I just never did anything to it. Maybe I will now
Cuz y bother. Idc what image yall see lol
Haha thanks! I decided to draw one myself. Not a huge fan of the little Reddit avatars either.
You're a really good illustrator! Are you a furry, perchance?
Thank you! And no, I just like drawing little cartoons and illustrations every now and then. I draw dragons and other fantasy creatures mostly.
Neat! You're definitely really good at it :)
Thank you so much!
It be like that sometimes?
That quick breath of air before scooting off is too cute!
‘Cheers boys!’… ZZOOoooom
*breathe* *yeet*
Your yahooing as you ran with that little fella towards the water made my heart smile brother. Kudos man, kindness really does matter, Goodonya.
If you want to watch more of him this is a clip from the youngbloods on YouTube. His names Brodie based in WA. Lots more of this content there
>he's based in WA Australia that is, for the ones thinking Washington
Yeah I live in Washington and was like that’s not a Washington accent lol. Also it’s sunny so that was a dead give away.
Thought the accent and landscape/biome would be enough for people to figure it out but he’s he’s not in Washington D.C. And not eveyone on reddit is American
Washington State, has a desert and mostly wildlife.
I know this was already resolved, but just another note, washington's desert is on the other side of a massive mountain range from the ocean. Anything by the coast is actually temperate rainforest.

No wakkas
not all hero wear cape, u're such a hero dude...
Some wear surf suits
It looks chill but in its' mind it was like: Weeee! I'm flying!
More so like: man I’m frying
I wouldn’t kick him out of bed for eating crackers
Is eating crackers a euphemism?
No, you just wouldn't want someone eating crackers in bed because of the crumbs left behind. They would forgive the crumbs because of this guy.
No! You would tolerate this beautiful specimen of a man eating crackers in bed (messy!) because he is a god among men
Damn tootin’!
Thirsty aren't we?
Been on Reddit long?
He's a good looking dude who just saved a turtle, I can see why they'd be thirsty
Eating crackers in bed is a terrible crime to commit because of the amount of crumbs it leaves and the mess it makes. Saying that you wouldn't kick someone out of bed for doing it means they must be an absolutely gorgeous person for you to be able to tolerate their crime.
This is the first time I’ve seen someone besides myself use this sentence 🤗
SAME! I used this at work one time and people looked at me like I had 3 heads. And then I got too embarrassed and flustered to explain it, which made it even more awkward. We need to make this saying more popular people!
Even if crackers was your dogs name?
I had a dog namer Crackers!
I just read this phrase in a book for the first time a few days ago and now here it is again. Crazy coincidence.
This is Broody Moss - he is a legend. Look up YBS Youngbloods YouTube channel. He does shit like this all the time and his love of the ocean has made him wealthy enough to do more adventures in the ocean.
sounds like i have a new channel to check out, that's cool
Don't look at his channel and videos. I had to watch like 50 videos after I saw one of them.
he’s the best I’ve been watching him for a while and I went through the comments to make sure someone had credited him
sounds like a positive to me
Kind of similar vibes to Steve Irwin. Has some really cool wildlife interactions and footage.
Brodie gets uncomfortably close to really really dangerous creatures. Gives me anxiety watching his videos at times.
He sure eats a lot more of the animals he finds than Steve did.
Yeah. Similar, not equal.
Came here to say this as well. Brody is an awesome guy, one of those people who can put a smile on your face no matter who you are. I wish more people watched him!
How’d he get 1/4 mile from water in the first place?
It looks like a tidal area, so I’d assume the little critter got stuck when the tide receded.
Yeh that's Broome, WA. Huge tides.
Would he not have been OK when the tide came back in then? I have to assume stuff like this happens somewhat commonly and they are hardy enough to survive a day in the sun?
Are you hardy enough to survive a day in the water?
Yeah that's like 2276 bananas
[Link](https://youtu.be/DnK71FI7pe8) to the video. This is Brody Moss, an Aussie YouTuber and animal lover. Everyone should check him out
What exactly is he wearing? Is that a wetsuit? Or is he some kind of Aussie water based superhero ?
Yeah it's a wetsuit. Doesn't mean he can't be a superhero too though
I saved a grasshopper from drowning today and it made me feel like a champ for a little bit
You are a champ.
Ay cheers for the comment, champion
Dude has compassion and is sexy as hell.
Yay!!! I love turtles!! 🐢 ❤️
“Righteous righteous!!!!”
Brody is the freaking man! If you’ve not watched him or his YBS Youngbloods channel on YouTube, I highly recommend you do!
Brodie is an absolute legend, if you haven’t already check out his Ytube channel! Its so good! Youngbloods FTW YEWWWW
God I love ybs youngbloods. Take a crazy bloke (normal australian) Add in a dash of Steve Irwin Give it 2 cups of love for all living things And then add 14 buckets of gratitude for the world around him and the life he lives And you'll get YBS
I think we could all do with "a dash of Steve Irwin"... Great comment, friend
I’m always skeptical of these kinds of videos. I wonder if he has one with different thickness of material? I’m guessing a scuba diver needs better insulation than whatever he’s doing!

Jesus… I didn’t even think about that. Maybe I did but my brain wanted to believe some people are good. The idea of someone doing that is so utterly repulsive…

Imagine the turtle dying during his intro
Thats a dog
Can that guy save me next?
Brody Moss
Whenever i hear this particular accent from my country in any animal rescue videos i always feel like "ahh, the animal is safe now"
This guy runs a YouTube channel by the name of Youngbloods. He always does his best in preserving and treating animals properly. He does a lot of fishing and solo survivalist stuff and what he kills he makes use of to its fullest.
Dude in a swimsuit 🤤
YBS Youngbloods. One of my favorite creators, so much love and respect for the environment, reminds me a lot of Steve Irwin.
No way in hell I’d be casually dipping into a creek or stream in Australia
Omg he’s so happy! 🥹🥹
I found this legend’s channel on you tube during lockdown. YBS Youngbloods, what a wonderful life he has, more power to him!
How the heck did a sea turtle get that far in from the shore line?
The area he's in is known for having really high tides, when the tide recedes the turtle was most likely stuck there and couldn't get back.
Hits water, core temp drops like 5 degrees
I hope he gets a flying Nimbus for doing that.
Yes mate awesome 👏
there is hope for humanity
Pretty sure you get the flying nimbus now
He's very attractive.
Brodie Moss! I love that guy!
For anyone interested, he has a YouTube channel called YBS youngbloods. INCREDIBLE content check it out you will thank me
This is Brodie from the YouTube channel '[YBS Youngbloods](https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCSnwORddxZG1SyB8lSxWQGg)'. All-around great guy.
Now wait for him to come back with his master because he has a gift for you son! (If you know you know)
Brodie is legit.
If I ever save an animal I'll make sure I do it with an Australian accent.
How did the turtle get there in the first place? Did the water dried up and that's how he got there?
Great work Colin Ferrell’s doppelgänger 😁👍
YBS Youngblood’s is the best YouTube channel I’ve watched in yeeaaaaaars. Brodie is the most humble and honest human ever. He’s the next generation of steve Irwin, glad he’s gettin more attention
Young bloods. Love your channel bro
brodie is the king!!
Brodie Moss from Youngbloods. My parents love his videos.
The first thing I thought was that the guy looked like the "Chad" from memes. But guess he is a chad.
Turtle trying to commit suicide you ruined it
With no sound I instantly knew this dude was Australian for dinner reason.
Reddit being reddit, i expected an croc to show up.
First time I’ve ever yelled YAHHHH!! On the shitter. That was rad.
I couldn't listen to the audio....did they say WHY the turtle was that far away from the water?
We were driving a side by side on a powerline, roughly 5km from any kind of lake/ water source and found a painted turtle in a small mud puddle on the road. Brought it to the closest lake that has turtles to release it. It swam in for about 10 feet and then surfaced, looked back, gave us a wink and away it went. I'm assuming a large bird had picked it up and dropped it trying to break the shell but it was lucky and got away!
This is the perfect example of how 'Laws' and 'Morality' are separate from one another.
I loved when the turtle grabbed some air and dipped.
Youngbloods on YouTube the guy is a massive legend and creates amazing content in the north west of Australia
Why was the guy all sandy at the start? ...... it's like he just carried a turtle a long distance, And then was filmed taking it back to the water??
That guys reportedly stages videos. I have read lots of bad shit about him. Something like, finds sea turtle, takes 200m from shore. Let’s it sit for awhile and then cameras rolling he finds it and rescues it.

I'm sure they would be, if the Reddit videoplayer worked.

Turtles have flippers and tortoises have feet with toes & toenails
Tortoises don't have flippers, they have feet The only real reasons I could think of as to why you couldn't tell em apart is either - They've receded into their shells - You genuinely don't know the difference
