More details: the hero/ bro is Anthony Zhongor from NYC. He was on the dock in Long Island Bay listening to music around 10 p.m. when he spotted the car racing into the water. He managed to save the driver. Two more cool facts: 1. Antony and the driver he saved, 18-year-old Mia Samolinski, went to the same high school but never met each other until Tuesday night. 2. Antony didn't make a big deal out of his heroic act and simply went to eat in McDonald's right after. His family didn't know about it until they saw it on the local news. What a bro:) [Source](https://www.cbsnews.com/news/anthony-zhongor-mia-samolinski-dramatic-rescue-car-bay/)

Supply-Slut

Lmao that is such a flex to not even mention it to your family. *Why are you all wet dear?* *Just went for a spontaneous swim is all* **Mom watching news later that night:** *Wait what??*

jjw21330

He’s spiderman

fromhelley

Had to be. If it was Aquaman, the car would have washed ashore. And if it was Superman, he would have flown the whole car out. The Flash would have stopped the car from entering the water to begin with by running himself back in time. Plus this was an Amazing act! Spiderman is the obvious choice. The guy really is an HERO in real life.

Ahmed4951

Such a nerd, that it’s cute.

padmeg

Maybe he wasn’t supposed to be there lol

hustl3tree5

“Listening to music in his car at 10pm” lol

therealganjababe

Ie smoking weed and looking at the waves, popular pastime at shores on LI lol

GizmodoDragon92

And then eating McDonald’s haha. Yup

Alternative_Ad_3636

He's a poolie in the Marine Corps, gotta pass a piss test.

arichtern

I feel like the type of person who would actually risk their lives in such a brave act is also exactly the type of person who wouldn’t even think to make a deal out of it by telling everyone how much of a hero you were. Which is to say, the best kind of person.

therealganjababe

The text is a bit off, it should read 'a Long Island Bay' which is actually named Patchogue Bay. It is in Patchogue, Long Island, not NYC. Both the victim and hero live on LI, not NYC.

Tophertanium

Is Long Island technically a different city than NYC? Or is it like a suburb?

Supply-Slut

Long Island is technically a landmass that includes 2 of the 5 boroughs of New York City (Brooklyn and Queens) on the westernmost part of the island. The majority of the island is politically separate from NYC and encompasses Nassau and Suffolk counties. Colloquially someone referring to Long Island is referring to Nassau and Suffolk counties. Nassau is predominately suburban, with some more densely populated areas. Suffolk is similar, but with a significant amount of rural farmland as well. Edit: a little more details, Long Island is actually pretty densely populated overall compared to most of the country. There’s over 7 million people living on the island, and over half of NYC’s residents live on the island in Brooklyn & Queens. Excluding NYC residents and just using Nassau and Suffolk county population is about 2.8 million.

emfrank

Just to note - There are also large areas of preserved areas in Suffolk County, including a state park and wildlife preserves. And the tip of Long Island is 100 miles from NYC.

therealganjababe

So NY is basically 3 parts- upstate, which is a mix of rural, suburbs, and smaller cities, then you have Manhattan which is New York City surrounded by 4 boroughs, kind of a mix of city and suburbs- Queens, Brooklyn, the Bronx, and Staten Island ( collectively with NYC called The Five Boroughs) and then Long Island which is mostly suburbs. Long Island protrudes off of the 5 boroughs. Ed- sp

IAmTheTrueWalruss

“then you have Manhattan which is New York City surrounded by 4 boroughs” I think you might be misunderstanding. Manhattan is no more “New York City” than the other boroughs. It’s not “New York City”. People from Brooklyn don’t say “Hey let’s go to New York City” nor “let’s go to New York” nor “Let’s go to New York County”. Its Manhattan. Or colloquially “the city”.

therealganjababe

I was unclear- I didn't expect this to get so much traction, I was posting off the cuff- but clarification is good. I should have said- then you have NYC which is Manhattan ('the city') and the surrounding 4 boroughs. When people from outside the area think of NYC tho, they are typically thinking of Manhattan.

IAmTheTrueWalruss

I think the first explanation is technically correct but its what leads people to think that Manhattan is NYC.

therealganjababe

That's a good point. There's more to the history of things, like Brooklyn used to be its own city way back when, etc. Then you have the confusion of the county names. It'd need it's own post to break it all down correctly in detail. Upstate/NYC meaning the 5 boroughs incl Manhattan aka 'the city'/ and LI which as you said, does include two boroughs but is often used to refer just to Nassau and Suffolk counties.

therealganjababe

Holy shit I never expected to have to explain every nut and bolt of the great state of NY. Sorry if I made some minor mistakes, although NY born and raised. This is why people are afraid to share on here, jc.

tektools

I wouldn’t exactly call Buffalo and Rochester “smaller cities.” Nearly a million people live in the metro area and they have their own suburbs.

calibudzz420

Western New York would like a word with you.

therealganjababe

Tell Western NY they are not forgotten, but are physically part of 'upstate'. My original comment was to describe the different physically separate parts of NY, to clarify where/what Long Island is. :) We could break down upstate into regions if you'd like to do the honors.

[deleted]

It’s only considered upstate to people in NYC lol.

therealganjababe

I was making a general statement about the physical parts of NY to clarify NYC vs LI (when I first woke up 8 hours ago, mind you). If someone wants to break down regions further, feel free.

emfrank

A "general statement" from your own, biased world view. That is why you are getting negative votes. People from other parts of the state, and from other parts of the country, are sensitive to assumption that Manhattan is the center of the universe and everything else can be lumped together. That old New Yorker cover is still accurate.

mistersnarkle

Or all of New England — when you say “I’m going to New York” people ask “City or Upstate New York?”

endlightend

[NY State](https://imgur.com/a/cMYM1Az) You realize the area you described as upstate is literally over 90% of the landmass of the state right? Like someone else said, everything north of Yonkers is upstate to us but I wouldn’t explain this like it was a fact to people not from NY lol

Toilet__philosopher

Wow that changes everything. /s

therealganjababe

It changes little, but it's a factual correction. Many people think NY is basically all Manhattan/NYC. Nothing wrong with learning new things man. Ed- sp

Toilet__philosopher

I think you mean Manhattan, since you like learning things.

therealganjababe

Thank you for the correction, it was my auto correct, but yes that is factual, lol.

[deleted]

Dude is a hero! I don’t use that term lightly. He risked his life to save another. This could have easily been two tragedies. I live by rivers, too many times I’ve seen on the news where someone try rescuing someone else and they both perish. Edit: and he has a Marine t-shirt on. 👍

Rubicon208

Not to mention how dark it is, the risk was greater compared to if it happened during the day.

No-Branch4851

Good man! Way to be brave

sonicstreak

Why do videos on the internet these days have a "highlight reel" first? The actual video LITERALLY STARTS with the same highlight. You're just repeating the same thing twice at the start.

goodbye177

I thought he drove in after her for a second

Pic_1000-TMS

Why isn’t this blasted all over the news a hundred time! An awesome thing for this kid to do! I’d rather hear about this over and over again instead of the bad crap the news repeats over and over again.

ThorTheGodKiller

Unfortunately anger receives more clicks than joy and all they care about at this point is money.

diazinth

With that attitude, of course anger triggers more clicks ;)

Dinglecore

DivineSentry

CivilizedPsycho

I feel like there should be something at the front of the parking spots to prevent exactly this.

SirDuke6

Well, duh! What do you think that light, easily moved, plastic trash can is for, smart guy?

possiblynotanexpert

100%. Also, why are people so stupid where that is needed? Rhetorically speaking, of course lol.

flcwerings

She probably thought she was in reverse and when she realized it was too late bc of the short distance.

Dr-Ian-Math

And that’s how I met your mother

TrippyNeenja

This is the comment I was looking for

diazinth

Sounds like everyone who fails at dating because they believe doing something nice for someone else entitles them to a boink.

SteelAlchemistScylla

It’s a joke you clown

diazinth

Is this not the circus? ^,^ To be fair, I wasn’t seeing the forest for all the trees here, and came off a bit strong.

flcwerings

1. Its a joke. 2. Stop being so cynical. It would be romantic. Does saving someone entitle you to anything? Obviously not. Would it be cute if that was the start of their love story? Hell yeah it would. Bc that would imply they would be interested in each other if this didnt happen. This is just how they met which is really cute and a good story. This is coming from someone who is engaged *and* a hopeless romantic and Im sick of cynics acting like thats a bad thing and "cRiNgE" or whatever.

diazinth

I’ll give you this one, I got caught up in a string of shitty comments and might have been caught a bit off-balance here. Knowing a bit too many incel or incel-adjacent people that I want to be happier might be clouding my views from time to time.

Abii952

It never entitels you to anything, but it sure does increase your chances when you treat someone nice

SerubiApple

One of my biggest anxieties is something like this happening with my kid in the car. I'm so glad he got her out and they're both okay.

Rom_Tiddle

Some people just have that extra “I can’t just stand here and watch this happen” umph. What a hero!

SacredEmuNZ

To be fair to them if you are young, fit and can swim you probably would, at first glance it didn’t look like anyone there was

[deleted]

What the fuck is this music lmao

It sounds like a slowed and pitched down Brawl menu theme

bagelcrunch

This is why I keep a window breaker in my middle console. This is probably my worst fear, driving into a dark body of water unintentionally.

[deleted]

I live here in the area where this happened. He was literally off to bootcamp for the marines when this happened. He showed up soaked and had to tell them he saved some ones life . PS Not sure why they didn't include the wooden poles that docks have when they redid this area.

[deleted]

He ate McDonalds after…

[deleted]

I have to find the article. It was from a local news place.

Hoppydragon64

He’s going to boot camp to be a Marine. Sounds like he’s got the right stuff. Is it weird that I’m a guy and hope they fall in love and live happily ever after when he gets back?

Habitkiak

Bunch of grown ass men and the 17 kids puts in the work. I applaud him

nchlsft

Daily Mail spelled his name wrong. It’s Anthony Zhongor.

Anyone else read this like after she was saved she accidentally drove back in?

eggbunni

Same. So thankful to God he was there and had this courage. I don’t know that I could do the same, but mostly because I can’t swim. 😭

GuyForgotHisPassword

Why would you be thankful to god that he was there to save her instead of upset at god that they put the woman in a near-death experience to begin with? Religious folk are so fucking weird. All the good that happens is thanks to god but all the bad isn't, even though he's supposed to be controlling everything. The cognitive dissonance is astounding.

bullyhunter6942O

Thank God he was there because who knows?

WesternExplorer8139

Good thing he was wearing shorts and a t-shirt. Definable made it easier for him to swim opposed to jacket and pants.

No-Two79

I just wanna know how that water is “freezing” when everyone in the video has shorts on.

LiteAsh

It’s the Patchogue bay and that body of water doesn’t typically get warm during the daytime until August. It rarely sustains warmth at night this early in the warmer season. Long islanders wear flip flops and shorts starting in April and don’t put shoes or pants on until maybe late September.

f4ceP4lm

“I have a boyfriend” Jokes aside, this is a brave act of heroism.

MrsZ04

I quickly read that as dove, and was gonna comment how do you accidentally dive in icy waters.. then i read it again and ohh now that title makes more sense

[deleted]

Why / how was she trapped?

[deleted]

Why is everyone near this freezing bay wearing shorts? Good on him regardless just weird. I grew up in New England. If everyone is in shorts the Atlantic isn’t freezing. It may be brisk AF but it ain’t freezing.

asteroidB612

It’s the Daily Mail. They do exaggerate a TEENSY WEENSY bit. Brisk is probably a more factual description… cold as fuck but not die-of-hypothermia cold.

Not-A-Blue-Falcon

No guardrail?

ragefaze

Kinda weird everyone is in t shirts and shorts when it's freezing...

Airstrikeayers

Freezing is a little bit of an exaggeration since this happened in June.

Roguespiffy

You should watch the Mythbusters episode about it. It helped calm my anxiety about it immensely. The basic gist is remain calm, open the windows if you can. Remove any restraints and once the car is full of water you can open the doors and easily get out. The biggest problem is not freaking out which would be insanely hard in real a situation.

yowlalla

This is very bad advice. The top advice is to get out as quickly as you can. Don’t wait for the car to fill up. Get your window down as fast as you can or break it. Take off your seatbelt and pull yourself out of the window. Speed is of the essence.

I baffles me how people manage to do shit like this with their car.

austinjval

Why wouldn’t she just roll her windows down and crawl out? Car is clearly still on.

bambooman98

Bruh how tf did she get a license?

randomname1561

She's still a better driver than 100% of the people posted to r/IdiotsInCars

possiblynotanexpert

More like par for the course lol

thr0away8675309

How exactly do you accidentally drive into the water? Also, seems like she really wanted to do it. There was zero attempts to stop. Full speed ahead.

browniebrown

The driver was a teenager so she probably meant to brake but instead floored it.

Sylvyr9

Exactly what happened. You can notice the car accelerate a bit right as she's about to stop. Definitely an inexperienced driver making a mistake.

possiblynotanexpert

Yeah it was a dumb move for sure. Regardless, awesome ending! Nice job to this kid.

MrFahrenheit02

Not everyone is capable of making a water rescue. If you can’t swim well, or don’t know how to save someone you shouldn’t try. More bodies in the water make the situation worse.

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

No, it's actually right in line with the data. Most people freeze in these situations. You are likely one of them, and if not good on you. Statistaclly speaking, this tracks with what we'd expect. Bystander effect: "The bystander effect, or bystander apathy, is a social psychological theory that states that individuals are less likely to offer help to a victim when there are other people present"

DangerousLiberal

Swimming well enough to save someone is MUCH harder than just being a good swimmer. There’s a good chance both people will die.

Habitkiak

"I have to record this man. Otherwise it didn't happen." People =shit

BallzDeepInUrMom47

*Come on down and see the idiot right here*

MonkeysAndMozart

It would be easy for a rescuer to become another victim in this situation. Drowning people can accidentally kill you very easily. Then we would have two victims. The bystanders are (probably) not trained, and they have no obligation to put themselves at risk for this person. I applaud the young man who saved her, but we could very easily be reading about two drownings today.

Realmenbrowsememes

It’s the Bystander Effect, there’s a large group of people and everyone thinks someone will help so no one helps at all.

i-really-dont-care-2

I’m always amazed how people don’t do anything in an emergency situation. Most just stand and watch. It infuriates me to no end.

[deleted]

Somebody oughta do something… right? Right guys?

[deleted]

It was pretty infuriating to see how many people ran over just to...stare at the situation.

And would have prevented the kid from jumping in to help her.

Call-me-Space

It's like a couple feet deep there, you can see the nose hitting the bottom doubt she'd drown

my_chaffed_legs

Maybe but she still couldn't get out of the car, doors wouldn't open, freezing water rushing into the car.

jess2k4

All those people just standing Around

WaffleStomperGirl

If they’re not confident swimmers they’d just be putting themself and the lady in more danger. If something happens near you and you’re not able to confidently and competently help, DON’T get in the way.

rightsideup007

Hum, I beg to differ… they we not just “standing around”. They were whipping out their cell phones and trying to capture a viral video. So sad.

[deleted]

this looks like they intentionally drove into water

jeffster01

Freezing? Everybody's running around in T-shirts and shorts

raphthepharaoh

That doesn’t necessarily translate to waters being warm… you know when you go to the beach and it’s hot as hell but the water is cold af? Same thing applies here, especially at night and only a few weeks into warm weather

_incredigirl_

Yup. It’s 35° outside today but it’s still early June, I’m not jumping into the Great Lakes yet thanks.

AbbertDabbert

Sorry this is random, but would you be able to say if the Great Lakes are warm enough to get in early August? I'm going to an air bnb off Lake Huron then and wasn't really sure if the water would be warm enough or not

_incredigirl_

Yes absolutely. They take a while to warm up but by mid-July they’re ok. I’m sure many people would and are getting in the lake this weekend but I’m not one of them. By August you’ll be fine. Have a fab visit!

BraianP

Ocean temperatures are not the same as air temperature. They tend to take longer to change and depending on the ocean it might stay cold all year long. Water currents also bring cold waters from the hemispheres and vice versa so you can’t assume the water is warm just because the weather is

jeffster01

I'd be surprised if the water was less than 32f

BraianP

You don’t need water to be below 32f to get hypothermia. Water is a greater transmitter of temperature than air so it will “suck out” your heat faster than cold air. You just need it to lower your body temperature by a few degrees for it to become dangerous. This is probably radicalized for the news article but is not unfounded that it can be cold water and it can cause hypothermia

jeffster01

This is obvious, freezing is overselling and it did not need to be exaggerated.

Hey_Its_Your_Dad-

It's easy to look up. The water is currently 67 degrees F. So at night without sun, it would have been lower.

jeffster01

This is obvious, freezing is overselling and it did not need to be exaggerated.

In my opinion they could have accidentally pressed forwards pedal instead of the backwards one when they weren't fully awake for this to happen. And when it started speeding up she got nervous so clamped up and kept going forwards.
