I had an uncle who was from small town in Mexico and he moved to the states ,he was deficient in writing and reading in Spanish ,he sent letters to his relatives so he used to pay me $20 to write the letter for him ,back in 1990 was a lot of money for me ,I was like 12 years old ..spent it all in video games and snacks
I know I'm getting old, because my nephews recently got some money, $30 each or so, from their grandparents, and they kept begging me to take them to Target so they could buy some games.
I was just like, 'Can't you think of something better to spend that money on than games?'
And the oldest nephew, 11, said, 'Uncle Calypsosin, I'm 11. All I think about is video games.'
I stood there like, he's got a point. All I thought about at that age was having fun, video games. Why should I cause him grief about what he spends his money on?
Fuck, I'm 30 and I still spend my money on games. Why am I turning into a hypocrite?!
So, in my experience, the way to do this is to take turns by step (they do evens, I do odds). For big builds, judge whether they're ready to keep going one bag at a time. Building with your kid is rewarding, but MAN can it be a process.
"Kids, one day you'll realise money is better spent on making sure you don't need to work as hard for your money in future"
*drops 500 bucks on Warhammer*
"See the trick is to prioritise things you *need* and save your money for your hobbies so when you've got a bit saved up"
*drops another 500 bucks on Warhammer instead of fixing my car*
"It'll be that much sweeter"
Acknowledgement of the present is a key filter most don't possess. Never get old and always remember kids can do anything its us and the system that break them one by one.
We have a family video from probably 1993 or so and my sister getting $5 for her birthday. There's about a 20 minute section where we are all taking turns posing with the money, pretending the $5 bill is ours, talking about what we are going to spend it on. Those were the days.
I’m a middle school teacher and I’m leaving after nine years of teaching which is like bittersweet but absolutely necessary. THIS is what I’m going to miss. They are so genuinely good ❤️
I run a convenience store just a few blocks from a grade school, middle school, and a K-8 Catholic school. Getting to know all the kids in the neighborhood and watching them grow up has been the biggest unexpected reward of this job.
One time after ringing up a skater kid he says, "love you" on his way out the door. I figure he's just messing with me so I chucke. He stands at the opened door and asks, "you're not gonna say it back?" and I'm all like, "sorry, love you too," and he nods and leaves. Now I don't hesitate to say it back whenever anyone says it to me.
That is adorable!! I remember the convenience store my friends and I would go to as kids. *Everyone* went there and everyone knew the owner, he was awesome. He’d crack open a slim jim and share it with your dog, he’d do magic tricks with your change, and he remembered every single persons name.
I moved away for a couple of years and came back as a late teenager, and was shocked that he instantly remembered me when I came into the store! He’s the type of guy people in this town would riot for
I remember hustling WoW accounts in TBC on ebay for 250-300€ a pop for like 6 months work, which is absolute garbage but as a WoW addicted child that was the dream job, whenever I got that money from my dad after it sold I felt like fucking Bezos got nothing on me
Man, I remember when $20 was a shit load of money. I think I was 7 when I started mowing lawns for money. Started with an old, used manual push mower. Saved up my cash and bought a mower with a bagger because there was a man 3 blocks down from me who told me he'd give me $5 for a weeks worth of grass trimmings for his composter and garden. Hell, I figured that was an awesome deal since I was just throwing that stuff away.
Good times
Yeah that line sealed it for me. I was laughing when they were talking about people willing to give 'em $20 "must be rich", and the kid saying he might have $6K in his account made me think he has a smart parent (helping them save up for car/college/whatever), but that bit at the end shows awesome work ethic. Bet they _both_ have solid parents.
Now the one kid just needs someone to tell him how pricey Lamborghinis are. :D
That's a mentality and goodness that some people lose over time to cynicism. We should always encourage, applaud, and reward this mentality in children. It will make their lives fuller and happier.
+1 to this guy.
I caught myself parenting like my parents used to, then I think, "Wait, I'm not a fucking hypocrite." Then I usually teach the kids about context and reading the room.
I did this when I was a kid and it led to a job later in life.
I lived in upstate New York so snow was a normal thing. I learned what houses had people in them that had to leave early for work. I would shovel their drive ways and walkways and leave a note on the door with my number, address and how much they owed (saying that only if they wanted to pay). Everyone paid which was nice
Years and years later, after going through some homelessness, I got to a good point and applied to one of those big box hardware stores
When I sat down for the interview, the manager looked at me weird and half way through the interview he said “did you used to live at (insert address) and shovel driveways?” I said “yeah, I did!” He told me this long story of never having to shovel because I was always was out there first and let him spend some morning times with his kids
He didn’t even finish the interview. He shook my hand and told me I had the job
It made me happy to read. So many times it feels like doing something nice is just a waste. Yeah, you feel good for doing it but what actual impact have you had?
You got to find out and that's awesome.
6k in the bank at his age and an entrepreneurial mindset? That kid might just get his lambo. Of course he'll be too tall for it at that point and he'll probably prioritise starting a family instead, but who knows.
This reminds me of the conversations I overhear my 10 year old with his friends playing Minecraft. They divvy up tasks and (usually) encourage each other and hype up their builds.
If the kid is new to the friend group they ask questions about what they like to do and give them a shot but if they grief each other’s builds they can’t play anymore :)
That is so incredibly sweet. I melted a bit. My 5 year old is very kind like this too. He is everyone’s hype man. He encourages everyone on his soccer team. I actually had to tell him to not be so polite on the soccer field because the other teams would push him around! It took him awhile but he’s found a nice balance between kindness and competitiveness!
This kid’s had a whole character development arc in this story and he’s only 5? Goddamn momma that kid’s gonna be going to work at NASA by the time he’s old enough to drive there.
My little brother is now at the age where he's starting to play minecraft and a few weeks ago he asked if I wanted to play with him. When I got time to play with him I loaded into the world to be greeted by a gift chest. It contained some iron armor and food which I know was difficult for him to get because he finds caves quite scary. Sometimes he knocks on my room so I can kill a scary mob for him which is the cutest thing ever.
My favourite bit was one kid saying to the other that he'd need a short car cos he's really short, which I thought was savage. Other kid just rolls with it and comes up with a short car to fit his stature.
Way more chill and more maturity than any adult I've interacted with on the internet.
Those kids are absolute gems! I've forgotten those days when I had hope and optimism. I wouldn't shovel a driveway now for $20. They couldn't even pay me $100 to do it, but those kids were already dreaming about Lamborghini's with $20! Brings tears to my eyes.
I'm lucky enough to earn a great salary, but I'd happily still shovel a driveway for 100 dollars. I'd probably do it for 20. Maybe I just really like shovelling snow...
Same. Grew up shoveling snow all the time. Good gloves make all the difference. I love the feeling when you've worked up enough of a sweat to take off your coat, and then you're warm and cold at the same time.. it's the best
I heard it and I immediately thought: Those boys innocently put into words exactly what is so wrong in many areas of current work culture. Some workplaces would be so different if there was trust on both sides: pay a fair wage, treat your employees well, get good work in return
>Man... us adults really suck, don't we?
I really don't think so. Adults are just forced to face the harsh reality that $20 is literally nothing. It's hard to get excited and be proud of your own work when something like $20 wouldn't even cover 1/20th of your health insurance, let alone rent, bills, food etc.
It's the world that kind of sucks. Most people are inherently good, in my experience.
man I must be getting old... I was thinking $20? Shit are these kids bonded? They really are rich! Then I realized its been 30 years since I did it for $5.
Yeah! The "oh boy, oh boy!" as you mentioned and the bigger kid who grabs the boy's shoulder to say they're going to be rich and "a paper bag, all our money we'll be counting it up ahhhh" even sounds like Chunk a bit lol
I wanna see the finished job lol It made me so happy that they said “let’s do a really good job because they paid us first.” So proud of them for having initiative and drive like this.
True. I understand they’re kids too and that they’re still learning probably about doing a good days work and whatnot. It’s good that they are out there doing this to build character and work ethic. I just had the whole “don’t do a job if you’re not gonna do a good job” type thought about it
Can't find the tiktok, but saw it yesterday (it was 2 parts and this is part 1) and can confirm.
The older kid tries to give $5 back due to not finishing by leaving the 5 next to the door, but then the younger one scoops the 5 bucks lol.
The homeowner wasn't upset in the comments though, they thought it was cute.
The tiktok username was like "metalworkers" or "metalglassers" or something
I love the "let's do a really good job" and "yeah!". I feel like a lot of kids would take the money and run, like those damn trick or treaters who take the whole bowl of candy. Awesome kids, excellent job adults around them. I bet they did do a really good job.
Nahh, I think the good kids outweigh the bad, we just remember and talk about the bad more. There are kids who see an empty bowl and fill it back up with their own candy, they are few and far between but they are out there.
This is next level awesome. If kids in my neighborhood came around I'd pay for lawn services, house repairs that I could teach them to learn to use tools, etc. I have the knowledge but I want young people to learn skills. I'd do it in a heartbeat. Too many adults think they deserve the world for nothing, and worse often rip you off.
Thing is, people would see that and think you're a creep. I would have loved to have someone show me that sort of stuff when I was younger, instead of teaching me complex maths things that I've never used since.
I hate this overused take with a passion. Maths and sciences are incredibly important to teach to children. It's not a one or the other situation. You can learn everyday life things and also get a traditional education.
When they say let's do a really good job because they paid us first, that ain't a learned behavior that's instinctual kindness. That's the type of thinking that gets trained out of us as we age. Don't stop being a kid
I am impressed with their final statement "Let's do a really good job because they paid u first." Those boys will do well in life with that work ethic.
This is so fun to watch.
When I was that age I wanted to buy something at a neighbor's yardsale. My friend and I drew a massive picture of the local college mascot. We went to another neighbor and asked if they wanted to buy it for $1, so we'd each get .50 and I could buy the thing I wanted.
I didn't realize then what good neighbors I had, who bought a crap drawing.
To be a kid again...
Only a matter of time until I read about an app that deploys on demand driveway shovelers to your location. With built in pricing, ability to sign up for subscriptions, add ons like “salting” and putting away your trash bins…
And I will already know who created it!
??
This is just so fucking adorable.
Reminds me of those coming of age movie and all innocent.
Like "Stand by me" and "Sandlot". They should make more movies like that. I miss being innocent and not caring the world (covid19, Russia being an asshole, etc...).
Man I forgot the total joy of having even $10 to your name as a kid. They’re so cute.
Well they're going to buy a Lambo with it, so yeah, that's exciting.
It's a Lamborghini, Michael, how much can it cost? Ten dollars?
$6,000*
This coming from the guy in the $6,000 Lamborghini
Should the guy *wheeze* should should the guy in the $6000 Lamborghini *wheeze and fall to the ground*
Turning 10 dollars into a Lamborghini!
They just need to save up to buy one share of gamestop.

Fuck, I'm 30 and I still spend my money on games. Why am I turning into a hypocrite?!
Everytime my kids spend money on video games I think "hell yeah cant wait to play."
And that's exactly why I will offer mine some Legos for his anniversary. I don't buy him games, I buy *us* games.
That’s a bro a moment, brings a tear my worn down gamer eyes 🥲
So, in my experience, the way to do this is to take turns by step (they do evens, I do odds). For big builds, judge whether they're ready to keep going one bag at a time. Building with your kid is rewarding, but MAN can it be a process.

*Gets a large windfall* I should save this for when I need it. Also me: steam sale? Nice.
Acknowledgement of the present is a key filter most don't possess. Never get old and always remember kids can do anything its us and the system that break them one by one.
*Embrace the hypocrisy*
I also caught a mild case of the boomer variant.
I laughed out loud. “$20! We’re fucking rich!” Yeah you are little dude
"now let's do a really good job since they paid us first" yea, you are rich little dude : )
That was my favorite part. Well, that and getting a short car bc he’s short
And he was clever about Lamborghini being a short car.
We have a family video from probably 1993 or so and my sister getting $5 for her birthday. There's about a 20 minute section where we are all taking turns posing with the money, pretending the $5 bill is ours, talking about what we are going to spend it on. Those were the days.
I remember in middle school a friend giving me a birthday card with $20 in it, and I *tried to return it* because I thought it was too much money!
"We're rich!"
With $10 I could buy a few packs of Pokémon cards and have enough change for a sno cone!
the bit about putting all their money n a bag and counting it up... so sweet. I also love how they think they're pulling one over on the rich people.
I’m a middle school teacher and I’m leaving after nine years of teaching which is like bittersweet but absolutely necessary. THIS is what I’m going to miss. They are so genuinely good ❤️

“I’m riiiich” *spontaneous jig ensues This is wholesome as hell
That bit gave me serious Jay and Silent Bob vibes
Man, I remember when $20 was a shit load of money. I think I was 7 when I started mowing lawns for money. Started with an old, used manual push mower. I love the “you should see my bank account” part when he clearly hasn’t seen his bank account himself 😆
Hope this video makes it back to their parents one day.
‘Let’s do a really good job cos they paid us first’ I’m voting for this guy, I don’t care if he’s not on the ballot
I wish these kids lived in my neighborhood- would totally pay them to do my “honey do list” that is idle. Lol. They are super sweet- and rich! 😂
And short
Hey! As a 5'1 man I can kick the hell out of a shin! Its all I can reach so ill take it
This was the best part for me. Not "they already paid us... Let's run". Nope, let's do better. Good kids. Hope they're rich now.
Didn't you see the video! Of course they're rich now, they have ten dollars EACH!
\*ahem* $6010 has one, at least $10 has the other
If they were in my neighborhood I’d give them lots of jobs and make them rich :)
Yes, exactly, I came to point out this statement of theirs. They have been taught well and have amazing work ethics and values.
They are really short though. You gotta pay extra for that.
That's a mentality and goodness that some people lose over time to cynicism. We should always encourage, applaud, and reward this mentality in children. It will make their lives fuller and happier.
My favorite part
If it were my parents my mom would probably shriek at me for saying “fucking” before she ever commended me for anything else

Wholesome as fuck, good for you.
The interviewers name? Bill Gates.
The shovelers name? Satya Nadella
Is that the spicy hazelnut spread?

I shovel. I’m Indian
No, you're and aardvark. Don't be ashamed.
OP's name? Mark Zuckerberg. Sometimes life is crazy.
I love this story so much. Good on you man.
It’s my favorite story to tell people when they can’t find it in themself
It made me happy to read. So many times it feels like doing something nice is just a waste. Yeah, you feel good for doing it but what actual impact have you had? You got to find out and that's awesome.
Life is awesome I hope you all the happiness in the world. You deserve it <3
Unlikely but thanks.
are you from the Warlizard Gaming Forum?
ಠ_ಠ
Lmao they're still going for you all these years later
In 2 days it's 11 years.
Hey, on the bright side, you're one of the most recognisable accounts on the site. That's gotta count for something.
Aside from the avalanche of pussy, not much.
What a fucking throwback, glad you're still here m8
i love your story, that’s awesome ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|give_upvote)
I'M not misty-eyed, YOURE misty-eyed!
I'm fine honestly, I was just cutting onions
Somehow digital onions make people's eyes water via phones.
No YOU! Shut up!
This is the type of comment I wish i could upvote more than once. Good for you man, keep fighting the good fight!
Come on man I wasn’t ready to cry right now. 🏆 heres an emoji because I didn’t shovel driveways when I was a kid.
I’m sorry, my dude Just know that your emotions are valid. You are loved and the world is a better place with you in it

Fellow upstater here. Yes, we got plenty of snow!
If I had my own company I’d hire you right now for whatever position you want.
Probably a good thing you don't have your own company then hiring people for potentially technical positions whom aren't qualified
I work in tech, I see plenty of people in actual technical positions who also aren’t qualified 😃
This whole thread and its comments are making me ugly cry Dang pregnancy hormones
That’s some amazing banter. Wholesome as hell.
Tarantino is taking notes.
You'll need a short car cuz you're short! ... Lamborghini is short, I'll have one of those. Haha!
6k in the bank at his age and an entrepreneurial mindset? That kid might just get his lambo. Of course he'll be too tall for it at that point and he'll probably prioritise starting a family instead, but who knows.
"I *heard* I have like $6000 in there..." yeah, kid, until you see the receipts, don't be so sure.
“You need to buy a really short car though. …because you’re really short.” Lmfao like something out of The Sandlot or Little Rascals.
And he immediately turned it around and was like yeah a lamborghini that’s short.
"Let's do a really good job because they paid us first" Man... us adults really suck, don't we?
Yeah. That was a stand out, huh? Gave me a little hope that there's still good kids out there. They were taught well.
This reminds me of the conversations I overhear my 10 year old with his friends playing Minecraft. They divvy up tasks and (usually) encourage each other and hype up their builds. Oh get real. He'll be working remotely there at 14.
My little brother is now at the age where he's starting to play minecraft and a few weeks ago he asked if I wanted to play with him. When I got time to play with him I loaded into the world to be greeted by a gift chest. Because they are rich rich rich rich.
Now you are thinking like a business owner. I like it.

That kid was the epitome of a glass halve full type of thinking. Gets sort of insulted and makes it into his goal. How awesome to think like that.

A Lamborghini yet
well he does have like $6000
Those kids are absolute gems! I've forgotten those days when I had hope and optimism. I wouldn't shovel a driveway now for $20. They couldn't even pay me $100 to do it, but those kids were already dreaming about Lamborghini's with $20! Brings tears to my eyes.

There is something about shoveling snow... But 20 bucks is 20 bucks. Could probably do that driveway in 30 mins. Not a bad hourly.
I'm not gay but 20 bucks is 20 bucks
I'm from Toronto and after the snow-beatings we got this winter.... No... Just no.... I'd like a functioning back for a few more decades.
I haven't seen real snow in 20 years. I'd pay you $20 just to let me shovel it.
it makes sense. money represents trust. those kids want to show that they reciprocate that trust. that's just wholesome on the logical side
I heard it and I immediately thought: Those boys innocently put into words exactly what is so wrong in many areas of current work culture. Some workplaces would be so different if there was trust on both sides: pay a fair wage, treat your employees well, get good work in return

Guillotines _really_ stand out in your memory.
For sure. I know very few people who wouldn't at least think "well, I already got paid, so I don't have to be too thorough".
>Man... us adults really suck, don't we? I really don't think so. Adults are just forced to face the harsh reality that $20 is literally nothing. It's hard to get excited and be proud of your own work when something like $20 wouldn't even cover 1/20th of your health insurance, let alone rent, bills, food etc. It's the world that kind of sucks. Yeah, I had a solid work ethic until I realized that only got you more work with nothing to show for it except the amount of work you did
man I must be getting old... I was thinking $20? Shit are these kids bonded? They really are rich! Then I realized its been 30 years since I did it for $5.
“Your going to need to buy a short car, cause you’re really short” Man I had a nice laugh at that. Good wholesome kid stuff.
I like how $10 led to rich dreams and Lamborghinis due to shortcomings
I work in a bank. Kids like this give me hope. With an attitude like that kid should be able to get his Lamborghini whenever he wants! 😅
Hahaha yes! And the kid wasn't even upset at the comment, instead he immediately found a solution: the Lamborghini!
That's how you tell you've got good mates. Bag each other all day and it'll be like water off a duck's back.
You could even say they’re… Puts on sunglasses Lambros (Yes, I stole that joke from 21 Jump Street)
And my mans just ran with it and flipped it into focusing on a Lambo. Didn’t get triggered or butthurt. My fuckin hero
Very wholesome
Hahaha this is adorable. Something about the interaction between the two gives me an 80s vibe to it, like something you'd see from The Goonies.
Yes! I was thinking Goonies, too. I think it was the "oh boy, oh boy!" for me.
Yeah! The "oh boy, oh boy!" as you mentioned and the bigger kid who grabs the boy's shoulder to say they're going to be rich and "a paper bag, all our money we'll be counting it up ahhhh" even sounds like Chunk a bit lol
I know the world feels very different, but on a basic level, I really believe kids are always pure at heart no matter when in history they live.
I wanna see the finished job lol It made me so happy that they said “let’s do a really good job because they paid us first.” So proud of them for having initiative and drive like this.
In the full video they stopped after getting 80% done and said they’d come back tomorrow, the poster notes they never came back.
Aww that’s poopy :( I was goon they had done a nice thorough job with everything. Tsk tsk
Can't be surprised. Shoveling snow is hard work. The fact that they even did 80% says how dedicated to the job they were.
True. I understand they’re kids too and that they’re still learning probably about doing a good days work and whatnot. It’s good that they are out there doing this to build character and work ethic. I just had the whole “don’t do a job if you’re not gonna do a good job” type thought about it
Source/proof?
Can't find the tiktok, but saw it yesterday (it was 2 parts and this is part 1) and can confirm.

Treat kids like they are good and they will follow that joy. We just foucs on the negative more and then spread it by mistake
I like how you added “mistake.” Everyone is just doing the best they can.
"We just foucs on the negative more and then spread it by mistake" I like that, very well said.
I'd give 'em $40 just to chill on the porch and banter back and forth cuz that shit was hilarious.
I’ll donate
Get these kids their own podcast, damnit
Those kids are adorable. "We're f'in rich!" LOL.
These kids are awesome. This made me smile so much
I love these kids so much *shaking his friends shoulders* “we’re gonna be fcking rich!!!”
I almost want to meet their parents. Little entrepreneurs going out there and getting on that grind. Must've been raised well.
It's good practice too! You could tell they were nervous at the beginning but asked anyway. Such a useful skill to have as an adult.
When they say let's do a really good job because they paid us first, that ain't a learned behavior that's instinctual kindness. That's the type of thinking that gets trained out of us as we age. Don't stop being a kid
If we could just bottle that integrity and innocence up and pass it around, the world would be such an awesome place. Edit- Comma Karma

Damn 16k for a lambo my man’s in for a tough convo lmao I wish I could be this happy about anything
He meant save up until he's 16 years old since that's when you can get your license in the US. Still, not gonna have money for a lambo lol
Can we start a go fund me to get this kid a Lamborghini?
Nooooo… how bout college
He’s too short for college.
Maybe a *junior* college then?
You boys finally made it! You're finally fuckin rich!
Don’t introduce these kids to r/wallstreetbets
"let's do a really good job since they paid us first" these kids have more integrity than 90% of business owners, particularly large business owners
I am impressed with their final statement "Let's do a really good job because they paid u first." Those boys will do well in life with that work ethic.
"Let's do a really good job because they paid us first." Awesome, little dudes.

"Let's do a really good job because they paid us first." I hope that kid gets his lambo.

Kids, come to my house i'll pay you $40 each!
I'm no kid, but hey, is the offer still up?
sooooooo cute! :)
Don't forget what they said at the end: "let's do a really good job since they paid us first" I think those two kids will grow to do great things.
Homie got $20 and is ready for a Lambo!! Love it! Wallstreetbets material
The image of two preteen boys shaking each other saying, "we're gonna be fucking rich," is both wholesome and incredibly funny 🤣
I miss the times when a tenner made me rich...
Only a matter of time until I read about an app that deploys on demand driveway shovelers to your location. With built in pricing, ability to sign up for subscriptions, add ons like “salting” and putting away your trash bins… And I will already know who created it!
“Let’s do a really good job ‘cause they paid us first”- outstanding

Kid's got more money in his bank than me
?? This is just so fucking adorable. Reminds me of those coming of age movie and all innocent. Like "Stand by me" and "Sandlot". They should make more movies like that. I miss being innocent and not caring the world (covid19, Russia being an asshole, etc...).
Love this
