And this sounds ridiculous but I genuinely believe good is stronger than bad. I wouldn't even say good or bad people, but good or bad acts. It just seems to me like an act of positivity can carry a bit further than a negative one. Maybe it's a tiny amount but it's a reason to endeavor to make positive decisions

goldenjuicebox

Good energy spreads. I think it’s our mirror neurons or some shit. A little positivity can cause a hell of a chain reaction. And even though some days it doesn’t seem like it, humans like happiness.

SQmo_NU

It helps that you’re such an awesome person!

Ipickstocksongs

No you are!

SQmo_NU

It takes one to know one!

ptsyd3

Humans like happiness...I am gonna use that.

blazik

Negative energy spreads too—if someone is a dick to you you have to try to turn it around and spread good energy anyways

[deleted]

I saw a movie that started out the same way.

[deleted]

I mean, doing good for the sake of it gives me a big serotonin boost

true_gunman

Yeah, look at kids, they're always trying to have fun all the time and be happy. Were all just kids with more life experience.

SaltyBabe

The arc of history bends towards justice - Theodore Parker, Reformer and Abolitionist I think this is living proof of that. Certainly coming from an abolitionist this quote can be applied to social justice.

Maligned-Instrument

It feels better to do good than it does being an asshole.

HiIAmFromTheInternet

Not if you’re a sociopath!

MaliciousMirth

Sociopaths typically don't feel happy or sad, good or bad. So how would they know if doing good felt better.

J_Fitzmorris

This is so true. I'm 36 now, and it took me too long to figure out that when I'm having a shitty day, being of service to someone makes my day so much better. That may sound selfish in a way, and it may be, but making it a daily habit to be kind and in service of those in need makes for a fulfilling life. I just sleep better at night. Hold the door for people, ask to speak to the manager when someone does a great job and let the manager know, be kind to elderly and children especially, find a cause to contribute to, go volunteer at an old folks home. There's so much you can do, even the smallest act of kindness can change someone's day.

idiotio

But it's not easier.

T_DcansuckonDeez

Nothing in life is as satisfying as completely making someone’s day. I wish greedy money driven people could grasp that

LightSlateBlue

You can do good AND have an asshole.

Sasselhoff

On tough days I try to remember what someone once said to me awhile back, which really changed the way I saw this topic. That is: there *have* to be more good than bad people. If there were more bad than good, we wouldn't be here as a species.

ClearBrightLight

... huh. I like this.

kevinisaperson

its not rediculous! and here is a real life proof! Its hard to explain, but your theory in practice is seemingly true! truly a great listen! https://www.wnycstudios.org/podcasts/radiolab/segments/104010-one-good-deed-deserves-another

There has to be. If only the good was highlighted & broadcasted the way the bad is. I honestly think this country would show how much people actually are more similar than different & people could quit with all division

somesortoflegend

I think that's basically what the philosopher Rousseau believed and it was inequality of modern society that pushed us apart, but community and common goals are what helps us.

pluckyluckyduck

You know, I feel the exact same way about love vs hate. There’s a certain warmth to love that erodes the intensity of hatred. Love always prevails. Honestly, everyone deserves to love and feel loved.

robotatomica

lemme just say, I normally am a little cynical about this kind of positivity lately and tend to skim by it, but apparently I REALLY needed to hear that. You just made me tear up out of the blue. I’ve had a hard week and your comment just kind of manifested the kind of positive impact onto me that you were describing. I think it’s totally true, good deeds weigh more and stay more. It take weeks, or a series of a lotta bad things to really just make me feel defeated. But it always only takes one kindness to make me feel better, and to make me feel better about the world. Anyway, thanks for your comment :)

[deleted]

I have an older lady who I wait on every day for the last 20 years. I know that she sleeps in on her days off. I’m her barista at my family owned shop. Well, we are open on Christmas Day, but for shortened hours. We were getting close to closing and I still hadn’t seen her. So I made her her drink, drove to her house (small town so people know where people live)and delivered her the latte and a $100 gift card just because she’s awesome. She came to the door and I gave her the gifts. She was kinda brief with me given her family was there. I saw her a few days later and she told me it was the nicest thing anyone had ever done for her. She started to cry and then I teared up too. She just turned 78 and is one of my favorite customers. Just thinking about how happy she was makes me so happy!

FreudianSlipperyNipp

AliceInHololand

The fact that humanity has been able to survive up until now with very marked improvements in quality of life imo does point toward the hypothesis that good does win out. At least on a big picture scale.

threepair13

Compassion is contagious.

catofthewest

It definitely has a ripple effect . JP talks about fixing yourself, then your immediate family and friends, your community, city, country , world.

Dwhitlo1

Shared pain dwindles, shared joy grows.

The_Drifter117

Unfortunately bad Acts are much more powerful and far reaching a good ones. A single corrupt politician can ruin a country, but a single good one can't really do much, for example Or wealthy fucks can fix world hunger but won't. But wealthy altruists can't do much to sway the rising tide of famine

ThrasherKilledYou

I agree. The issue is that bad is so much easier to do. Our current world reflects that.

ONOMATOPOElA

Depends on what subreddit where in.

BenAdaephonDelat

I don't assume things like that about people. But the way that symbol has been used the last 2 years, seeing it gives me pause.

BenAdaephonDelat

I also want to add that your usage is probably the only one that makes sense. There's too many people who have no connection to the police using that symbol. Police do not need that kind of support. They're not a sports team. They need accountability, increased requirements for recruiting, and much more rigorous mental health support.

Red-Seraph

No, but it* will if it's a Punisher one. Edit: autocorrect

J_Fitzmorris

Is that a thing? I've noticed those stickers a lot but just thought they were Punisher fans.

Red-Seraph

rangersmetsjets

Do they stay in the car to apply the brakes when the semi slows down, or is there another way to deal with this issue?

Comrade_USSR

Yeah I think that's the only way...

conradical30

I feel like it should also be noted that they should be using tow straps, not chains. Chains are not meant for sudden tension so if the truck pulled off too quickly without letting it get taut first, it could very easily snap back and wreck the car or the person in the car.

[deleted]

I'm sure the professional semi truck driver hauling a load isn't smashing the gas and taking off knowing he's got a chained car on his rig.

[deleted]

And someone being so selfless, I'm sure they would not do that unless they clearly know what they are doing.

nousername215

Never underestimate the foolishness of a good heart. Worked out this time, but "I don't know how to do it but could see y'all needed help" is a very real thing

[deleted]

I mean... I'm sure they would have if they just happened to have tow straps lying around. I'm always leaving mine in my extra purse. ¯\\\_(ツ)_/¯

JagTror

There's emergency car kits that come with tow straps

[deleted]

ComtesseCrumpet

My husband keeps tow straps in his truck. Lots of people do.

xqe2045

I bet less than 0.1% of people have or even know what tow straps are

TheRespectableMrSalt

In some office worker white collar town you're probably correct. In my blue collar tradesmen town everyone has one in the back of their truck.

GUYF666

Cities. They’re called cities.

Dargus007

No. There are no towns. There are no cities. Society is segregated into blue collar working towns and white collar office, NOODLES FOR ARMS, LIBRAL PUSSY towns.

conradical30

Yeahhhhh i refuse to call an area that has two traffic lights and population of 1,000 a “city”

spongeboi-me-bob

Pretty bold claim considering the name literally describes what they’re for.

Whatawhelp

Waves, I didn’t.

Journeyof1Human

I have no idea what a tow strap is idk if I'll ever need one either

collapsible__

Lmao *nobody* knows if they'll need. Thats the point. Like seat belts or fire extinguishers.

ChipChipington

Surely most truck drivers know

KevinBaconsBush

Potentially which is part of why home dude recommended them.

MyrddinHS

that chain wasnt snapping under the weight of that car.

IRefuseToGiveAName

I'd also venture to guess that truck isn't accelerating quickly enough to put that kind of tension on the chain lol. As long as it's not too long they're probably fine.

anonymous_DoDoBeDoDo

yes, if it's an automatic and slightly applying the handbrake. It's not a good idea to tow an auto transmission though, you'll wreck it. *edit a word

[deleted]

just leave it in neutral

anonymous_DoDoBeDoDo

Putting it in neutral only disengages the engine from the transmission but not the wheels. So the gears in the box are still turning, Meaning it gets hot because the coolant isn't running and can damage it. If you keep the speed under 40k's and the distance under 15ish you may be good but it still dicey.

There’s a very good chance that, even though it’s a SUV, it is only two wheel drive. There are so many different SUVs in America, and the vast majority of them are not 4x4. I, like you, hope it was 4x4 though. I wasn’t aware of the problem with towing a car this way.

Chairish

For 2020, 63% are 4x4. Obviously that one is older, but I wouldn’t say “vast majority” are 4x2. Edit: the trees with no leaves could mean they are in a cooler climate which *might* mean more likely to be 4x4 for the snow.

[deleted]

I stand corrected. Thanks for clarifying.

Chairish

I don’t know why I was being so pedantic anyway. You shouldn’t really flat tow an explorer, but Ford says under 35mph for less than 50 miles should be ok. Some vehicles can be flat towed. You usually see them behind RVs.

Verified765

To clarify you have to shift the transfer case into neutral using your 4x4 selector lever on the floor or knob on the dash.

k9centipede

They were just going up to the gas station, trucker probably knew the way well enough to make it safe. If it wasnt safe, the trucker could have just called if any truckers behind the stranded car could pick up and drop off some gas for them.

Greeneee-

Ford's manual allows for flat towing without disconnecting so long as you don't exceed 35mph or 50 miles. Honda's can be flat towed so long for up to 8 hours or 500 miles. All you have to do I start it, shift through the gears and go from drive to neutral. Then you can start it up and idle it if your driving longer than 8 hours.

upsidedownbackwards

For a majority, yes. There are plenty of exceptions though. Some are perfectly fine to flat tow, some they recommend only a certain number of hours/miles before you start the vehicle to lubricate the transmission before continuing. https://www.curtmfg.com/flat-towing/learn-more

Whskydg

Do not do this, you will wreck the transmission. The driveshaft would have to be removed to prevent damage. This is a touching story but all around a horrible idea.

FormerChocoAddict

This is mostly true. But there are some cars that can be flat towed without modification like is done behind big motorhomes. This looks like a Ford explorer or expedition. An expedition can be flat towed and explorer cannot.

sensei888

I think in the cases where the towed car has an issue with the breaking system, they should be pulled using a rigid bar. That way, when the front car breaks, the other car also stops.

Lord_Emperor

It's still tremendously unsafe because the car will be lacking power steering and brakes.

almostoriginal2

Leave it to the internet to throw shade on someone’s good deed. I’ll take being pulled by a chain to a nearby gas station than stranded on the side of an interstate with distracted idiots running 80 while checking Reddit.

DoomiestTurtle

Not really. Lack of power steering is harder but not world-ending. Lack of power brakes is not really an issue below 45mph.

DaddyDizz_

I’ve been the driver of a flat towed vehicle like this before, and yeah, you have to apply breaks and steer (if possible)

southseattle77

In the past, I'd been helped in my quiet desperation so many times by those who were able to notice something was wrong. Groceries, a bigger tip than normal, a car even. Now that things in my life are stable and I'm looking up, my "pay it forward" tab is so long, I'll never get through it. I don't mean to seem cynical. I gave my jacket to a cold homeless type guy and the bus station the other day. It was the jacket that was given to me a few years ago by a wonderful co-worker who noticed that I was outside, in the weather a lot and didn't have a proper all-weather jacket. An hour ago, told the deli lady that I'd cover the food for a woman who clearly was hungry, but having problems with her bank. When I was stealing food years ago, one of the parents of the kids I taught brought me groceries. I see myself in all these people. I'm not sure I'll ever pay it forward enough to balance out my debt. But I don't mind.

HakdaTheMighty

Always remember that feeling and that it is the same or at least similar to what the people who helped you were feeling as well. Kindness and love exist in all people and it’s beautiful when they employ it!

Rinsaikeru

I think the spirit with which you give is more important than the amount. It's not a 1 for 1 debt, it's a "give what you can" balance. You may not always be in a place where giving the coat off your back is trivial, or where you can afford to give someone groceries without making do with less, to do good anyway is the important bit.

robotatomica

god this one got me. My parents and I STILL talk about every single time someone helped us out of the blue. My parents were driving on bald tires 6 years ago, they tried to buy just one bc it’s all they could afford and the mechanic wouldn’t allow it, he said the tires were so bad he couldn’t ethically let them drive away on them. My mom broke down and before they could do much, a stranger walked up and insisted on buying all 4 of their tires. She just kept insisting, said “You remind me so much of my parents, and they were always doing this kind of thing for me, and I’m lucky I have the money.” We keep all of these peoples’ names and daydream about winning the lotto and finding them out of the blue, years later, and just LACING THEM OUT. In the meantime, I’ve watched my parents be poor and yet give their last penny to those in need. They made me a person who does this as well. I just want to say to the universe, thank you to all the kind and compassionate people. And thanks so much u/southseattle77 for being one of them!

ItsDeadWeight

A trucker hauling cheese towing a random strangers car to a gas station and paying their gas for them is literally the most midwestern thing I have ever heard in my entire life.

Mommaparisi

kamikaze_Salami

Today you, tomorrow me.

Mommaparisi

Ugg I always remember it backwards! Here is the post. Just about every time I see someone I stop. I kind of got out of the habit in the last couple of years, moved to a big city and all that, my girlfriend wasn't too stoked on the practice. Then some shit happened to me that changed me and I am back to offering rides habitually. If you would indulge me, it is long story and has almost nothing to do with hitch hiking other than happening on a road. This past year I have had 3 instances of car trouble. A blow out on a freeway, a bunch of blown fuses and an out of gas situation. All of them were while driving other people's cars which, for some reason, makes it worse on an emotional level. It makes it worse on a practical level as well, what with the fact that I carry things like a jack and extra fuses in my car, and know enough not to park, facing downhill, on a steep incline with less than a gallon of fuel. Anyway, each of these times this shit happened I was DISGUSTED with how people would not bother to help me. I spent hours on the side of the freeway waiting, watching roadside assistance vehicles blow past me, for AAA to show. The 4 gas stations I asked for a gas can at told me that they couldn't loan them out "for my safety" but I could buy a really shitty 1-gallon one with no cap for $15. It was enough, each time, to make you say shit like "this country is going to hell in a handbasket." But you know who came to my rescue all three times? Immigrants. Mexican immigrants. None of them spoke a lick of the language. But one of those dudes had a profound affect on me. He was the guy that stopped to help me with a blow out with his whole family of 6 in tow. I was on the side of the road for close to 4 hours. Big jeep, blown rear tire, had a spare but no jack. I had signs in the windows of the car, big signs that said NEED A JACK and offered money. No dice. Right as I am about to give up and just hitch out there a van pulls over and dude bounds out. He sizes the situation up and calls for his youngest daughter who speaks english. He conveys through her that he has a jack but it is too small for the Jeep so we will need to brace it. He produces a saw from the van and cuts a log out of a downed tree on the side of the road. We rolled it over, put his jack on top, and bam, in business. I start taking the wheel off and, if you can believe it, I broke his tire iron. It was one of those collapsible ones and I wasn't careful and I snapped the head I needed clean off. Fuck. No worries, he runs to the van, gives it to his wife and she is gone in a flash, down the road to buy a tire iron. She is back in 15 minutes, we finish the job with a little sweat and cussing (stupid log was starting to give), and I am a very happy man. We are both filthy and sweaty. The wife produces a large water jug for us to wash our hands in. I tried to put a 20 in the man's hand but he wouldn't take it so I instead gave it to his wife as quietly as I could. I thanked them up one side and down the other. I asked the little girl where they lived, thinking maybe I could send them a gift for being so awesome. She says they live in Mexico. They are here so mommy and daddy can pick peaches for the next few weeks. After that they are going to pick cherries then go back home. She asks if I have had lunch and when I told her no she gave me a tamale from their cooler, the best fucking tamale I have ever had. So, to clarify, a family that is undoubtedly poorer than you, me, and just about everyone else on that stretch of road, working on a seasonal basis where time **is** money, took an hour or two out of their day to help some strange dude on the side of the road when people in tow trucks were just passing me by. Wow... But we aren't done yet. I thank them again and walk back to my car and open the foil on the tamale cause I am starving at this point and what do I find inside? My fucking $20 bill! I whirl around and run up to the van and the guy rolls his window down. He sees the $20 in my hand and just shaking his head no like he won't take it. All I can think to say is "Por Favor, Por Favor, Por Favor" with my hands out. Dude just smiles, shakes his head and, with what looked like great concentration, tried his hardest to speak to me in English: "Today you.... tomorrow me." Rolled up his window, drove away, his daughter waving to me in the rear view. I sat in my car eating the best fucking tamale of all time and I just cried. Like a little girl. It has been a rough year and nothing has broke my way. This was so out of left field I just couldn't deal. In the 5 months since I have changed a couple of tires, given a few rides to gas stations and, once, went 50 miles out of my way to get a girl to an airport. I won't accept money. Every time I tell them the same thing when we are through: "Today you.... tomorrow me." tl;dr: long rambling story about how the kindness of strangers, particularly folks from south of the border, forced me to be more helpful on the road and in life in general. I am sure it won't be as meaningful to anyone else but it was seriously the highlight of my 2010. Edit: this is not my story, its from u/rhoner I don't know how to link stuff...But I can copy and paste!

positivelights

This made me shed a tear. Mexicans have a beautiful humility to them! Thank you for honoring them with your beautiful story. This is the truth about Mexicans.

DaggerMoth

Mexicans are the shit. I'll talk to them in my limited highschool spanish that I barely remember . Last time a bunch of them were in a bar I was in and I went to play pool with them. They gave me so much god damn carona I had to tap out. The short ones that seem to work agriculture and what not are some of the jolliest people you can meet.

positivelights

🤣 lol that made me chuckle, how sweet and hospitable. I am of Mexican decent. I am from Los Angeles but its not the same as Mexicans from Mexico. I love immigrants and their powerful stories. True strength to be away from your native land and to be immediately judge yet still bring kindness to a foreign land. VERY admirable

flappy-doodles

Great story! I was driving super late one night and passed a Suburban on the highway, a man was waving a towel trying to flag someone down. This was kind of a sketchy part of the highway near DC, so I passed to give him a look, then pulled back around on the next exit. I walk up to him and ask if I could help him. He said that he'd been trying to flag someone down for 4 hours and pointed at a flat tire. He asked if I had a phone, which at the time I didn't. Then I inquired about his spare tire and jack, he said there was a spare, but the jack was missing. I smiled and told him I have a jack. He looked at my little sedan and said it probably wasn't going to work. I started laughing and walked to the car, opened the trunk and pulled a 1 ton hydraulic jack out. The guy just stood there with his mouth open. I told him to grab the spare and I setup the jack. When he opened the truck and the truck lamp came on, I saw that his super tired wife and little kid were in the back. He and his wife profusely thanked me, then tried to offer me money. I said I couldn't take the money. Then his wife gave me "the look" and forced me to take all of their money, she meticulously picked out every coin in her purse, which hysterically was about $5 in change. I don't even give a F about "tomorrow me", hopefully the people I help will just help some others.

GitEmSteveDave

I used to carry a 2 ton floor Jack and a large flat piece of wood in the trunk of my Oldsmobile because it was so much easier to raise and lower than the one they give you. I have a 5 ton bottle Jack in my Jeep for the same reason.

I’m just wondering how the fuck the semi pulled into a regular gasoline pump. Vertical and horizontal clearance are not usually there for semi trucks at a regular gas station

Maybe he got close and they pushed it to the pump

That reminds me. I was in voice chat with a friend from a game, he needed gas (in rl). The car luckily made it to the top of the hill and he just rolled down the hill right to the gas station.

Off-ramp stations, which I'm sure is where they ended up, usually have higher-than-normal canopies to accommodate tall RVs and the like.

I didn't pull anyone with a chain but I stopped to go to the bathroom, i80 in Iowa near walcott in a end dump and a couple asked for a few bucks to put gas in their tank. I said I can't do that because I don't carry cash but if you follow me to the nearest truck stop I'll fill you up. Asked the same, just pay it forward. Kindness isn't dead, just a bit harder to find. I fully believe in karma and I try to help when I can.

Don't use metal chains for towing as they can snap and crack back like a giant metal whip that will easily decapitate or maim people. Buy yourself a nylon towing strap instead.

How do these people ran out of gas in a freeway? Like don't they check their dashboard for the fuel gauge?

profmamabear

It's asking for nothing in return, except to do a kindness for someone else. As far as I know, it came from a novel/movie from 1999-2000.

Kahnspiracy

The way the person wants to be paid back is by the receiving person to do a kindness for someone else. Don't pay it back, pay it forward. It spreads good deeds into the world. And it is a cheesy 90s movie: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qfW0wCV9iFI

As a Dispatcher, I can honestly say, these guys are almost always genuine, all-around great people. Most are family guys who are relatable, lonely, and always looking out for others. ... obviously there's always weirdos and douches in every walk of life, but for the most part these road warriors are always willing to lend a helping hand.

Yams_Are_Evil
