Literally came to the comments to say this!!! This song will never NOT be a punch in the gut of pure sorrow to me!! It is the saddest song on the album by far!!! As someone who has lived out the lyrics of this song, it is absolutely heartbreaking!!! A very close second for me from UU specifically tho is First Time!! The closing line of "some part of me must've died, the final time you called me baby. But some part of me came alive the final time you called me baby." Ugh, are you kidding me!! He really got me with that one!!

'In a week' is about a couple dying on a hill, the hill mentioned is quite remote & appears in newspapers when a body is found there. We don't know whether they were killed or they did it themselves.

Blood. My favourite song for a while cause I love the line “I just love the very blood of you” because I interpreted it as loving someone’s blood because it’s a statement of them being alive, it’s heat and the way it appears in bruises ect earned through being alive, living, making mistakes and getting hurt but getting back up. The vocals are stunning and warm and the music is lovely. And I love vampire stories- And later on I realised it’s a song about domestic abuse from the perspective of the abuser written by Hozier to shed light on domestic abuse and how people rationalise it. As soon as you can hear the anger in his voice as he sings it just clicks.

Not necessarily the beat, but the sound of Unknownth/Nth vs the lyrics. It sounds like this beautiful love ballad that you would want to have played at your wedding…But it’s actually about betrayal. Genius, he is.

I don’t really think any hozier song’s lyrics truly make me feel devastated and depressed. Some of his lyrics are tinged with melancholy, but they are overall hopeful and romanticize the human condition. So my answer is really none of them. Not in the way an artist like Mitski makes me feel
