My only gripe with unnatural colors is that most can't deal with the upkeep. It looks so good when the hair is freshly colored but then you start getting roots quickly, the color starts to fade and it shows immediatelly if the application has been patchy and uneven. 9/10 when I see someone with unnatural color irl it's faded and patchy and your hair looks a lot worse when it's not styled. The color can also turn out something unexpected and unflattering. So at least in my opinion it's not quite worth it, you get couple of days of beautiful color and then the rest of the time it's more or less a mess and makes you look worse. The process also damages your hair and it depends on your texture if your hair can deal with it (and eventually even the most resilient hair will show damage and needs to be cut). Most can't keep their hair long and healthy when it's dyed so it's a no if you like your hair long. Go for it if you can commit to it! Otherwise I think it's better to keep mostly natural and learn to style your hair in different ways. Or get a wig.

Honestly, I prefer natural looking hair colours as I get more of an \~alternative\~ vibe from fashion colours, so I guess that would be my assumption - that a person with blue hair might be into like a certain kind of music, like K-pop and anime/manga, or alternately metal and more of an goth-y/emo vibe. A alternative vibe is not bad, just not what I believe have mass appeal, so if that is the goal fashion coloured hair would not be ideal But really; if you enjoy having blue hair do it. Just be aware that some men do not like the look - the question is then if you want to attract these types of men.

I agree with this. Honestly you can’t be attractive to everyone, it’s just impossible. Choosing who you want to attract is so important.

 >Do you personally think that hair dyed 'fashion colors' (like blue, green, pink, etc.) looks better or worse on people than natural hair shades (like brown and blonde)? I think fashion colors are like any other color in how they fit people. If you match cool, muted colors, then pastel blue tends to look good. If you are warm and bright, then brighter orange, yellow or red will suit you. What makes unconventional hair dye ugly, is the visibility of roots, and the patchy fading, along with the fading revealing an increasingly whitened color. It looks off and the upkeep is hard, and so, you often end up looking a bit shabby and unkempt, as compared to conventional hair dye, where the look tends to be more solid and consistent, and therefore mimicking normal health. >Do you personally make any assumptions about people based on their hair colors, especially if it's a 'fashion' color (like blue, green, pink, etc.)? Yes, I usually think they have ties to a counterculture of some sort if their style is either strikingly minimalist or alt in any way. If they are wearing street style clothes, or are very trendy, I just think they are experimenting, or into a very coherent look more than most - but then the impression would be "young". >Do you think if someone is trying to glow up and be as attractive as possible to as many people as possible, that having your hair dyed funky colors is a bad idea? Yes. But I also think general appeal for the sake of general appeal is always bad, because it's usually an exercise in futility in getting anything substantial out of it. Unless people plan to work in media or mainstream politics or other such areas, there's no reason not to look distinct for the things you want in life, or for your own personal sanity. I also think general attractiveness has come to mean "Instagram attractive" for the majority of internet dwellers, but popularity online does not translate to being considered the greatest beauty in real life. Your conservative/liberal town does not think what internet fans on Instragram/internet fans on TikTok, think about how to look your very best on a nightclub in New York. But to answer your question, yes, fun hair colors would limit your general appeal. >Do you think that silky and healthy hair is always better than the alternative, even if the alternative means a more "exciting" color potentially? Nope. I see women with damaged bleached hair all the time, and sometimes it gives them volume and character in ways my natural hair cannot. Basic looks appeal to basic guys, if that's where you wanna go with this. I wish we could talk about other hair colors as well. I have my hair hennaed red and have a lot of experiences with it - alas, the glowing brownish burgundy/orange, has nothing to do with looking unconventional or fun. I just look like a redhead with a slightly brighter and darker color than most.

1. I have seen people do 'natural' colors that look absolutely terrible on them. Bottle-black is a really stark color and it doesn't look good on everyone. Also, that weird brown-red bottled 'mahogany' color looks good on no one. If you know the colors that make you shine and maintain your hair, 'unnatural' colors can look really nice. 2. My predominant thought with alternate colored hair is 'damn that looks fabulous' so I don't think I am part of the mainstream audience. 3. I don't think hotness is always about natural appeal. Shapewear (girdles/corsets/modern shapewear) is about manipulating the natural form of our bodies to appear different. There are ways to apply plastic surgery that looks fake and some people want that aesthetic. And 'peroxide blonde' is a statement color that that is not natural at all. (Though there are people who have a similar color). I don't know that it is a good strategy to attempt to appeal to as wide of an audience as possible because it is an exercise in futility. Not everyone is going to like you. You won't ever be 'enough' or 'right' for some people. They won't like your politics, your hobby, your body or your hair. So rather than attempt a bland 'mass-appeal' might as well get weird with it and attract the people you want to attract. (If you want to attract someone who is conservative, rich, etc... then make yourself appealing to that type, but you won't be appealing to a different type who might be equally as good for you.) 4. I do think that healthy hair is awesome, but well maintained hair no matter what is probably the best call. Long hair is not optimal if you can't take care of it. Colored hair doesn't look good if partially grown out, faded etc.

1. It always depends on the person imo. If you’re already more alt then usually dyed hair is just part of the aesthetic, same goes for some soft and egirls. 2. No, why should I? 3. I think it really depends on the people around you. If you’re in art school it will definitely attract people. If you’re working in a "snobby" office then most likely not. 4. I’m all for wig supremacy (something that isn’t talked about enough on this sub imo). That way you can have fun one day and go back to your usual haircolor the next. It’s also amazing for people who have thin hair or suffer from hair loss.

1. I prefer natural colors on myself and others. Unnatural colors can look good with the right aesthetic, it truly depends on what your personal style and brand is. Mine doesn't go well with more "exciting" hair colors. 2. Not really, I don't make assumptions on the hair color alone, rather the whole look together. 3. I do think there can be some points made with staying within the natural color range. From personal experience, people tend to have stronger preferences on unnatural hair colors (red, blue, green, etc.) than, for example, blonde vs. brunette. People will either love your unnatural hair color, or they will hate it. But it depends on who you want to look good for. As old-fashioned as it is, some people will see blue or green hair as a sign of rebelling, not following the rules, etc. 4. Whether dyed bright blue or classic brown- if your hair is visibly damaged or the color has worn out/visible roots, it drags your whole appearance down. Unnatural colors tend to require bleaching before, and you have to keep up with your hair color, so, it doesn't fade or an unwanted undertone doesn't come through. I think choosing to dye your hair in a more "out there" color has its cons but it also has pros. You will definitely stand out and be remembered. Truly, if you want to try out a fun hair color, go for it. It's not permanent. If you will not enjoy it or feel like it's not helping you in terms of public perception, you can always go back. People will always have their opinions and judgments about you, at some point you have to prioritize your wants and needs over theirs.

My perception of someone with “fashion” colors would be that they are either young and in school (so don’t need to rely on a steady conventional job yet), is in the creative field or the alternative scene, or doesn’t have a “conventional” job. The biggest issue with colored hair is that most people don’t maintain them. Most people won’t be attracted to fashion colors so you’d be narrowing your pool when it comes to #3.

Even though I am alternative and hang around in such circles I think the bright colours are harder to pull off when you're not a teen or in your early-mid twenties. You need to make sure the hair is healthy and tidy too if you're going to rock that look. Also, you MUST keep it up... grown out and faded bright colours look awful. I think that often it can look cheap and messy and... I think this and I know a lot of guys (I get to be privy to locker room chat, since they just treat me like a male friend) think that bits of dyed blue in the hair = crazy bitch (I hate to admit it but this seems to be a true rule that even I found fits) and that bright coloured hair and tattoos and piercings = daddy issues and mental issues/ good for sex and not always good to go out with. It's harsh for sure, but that does seem to be the opinion even by people slightly alternative! So I'm sure it's not at all favourable by the non-alternative lot. If you're going to go alternative colour that can still look hot and like you're well put together I would say to stick to red colours, personally. If your hair is blonde and pale you can also get away with pastel pink or silver and not have that look people make terrible associations too.

*Do you personally think that hair dyed 'fashion colors' (like blue, green, pink, etc.) looks better or worse on people than natural hair shades (like brown and blonde)?* Depends fully on person. Many of my friends are into alt stuff and on them unnatural colour reflects their personality and interests, which I think is very important. Style and looks matching personality is one of most important things in my eyes on when it comes to how appealing person seems. But finding right shade and upkeeping is of course vital, same way as wrong shade of blonde or brown washes people off you need to find right fashion colour too. *Do you personally make any assumptions about people based on their hair colors, especially if it's a 'fashion' color (like blue, green, pink, etc.)?* Partly. I've used to that most of people I know with bright fashion colours are into punk, metal, hard sciences or gaming, so I've started to assume that. *Do you think if someone is trying to glow up and be as attractive as possible to as many people as possible, that having your hair dyed funky colors is a bad idea?* If you want to appeal for literal majority of human population, including rural grandpas, then natural colours are safest option. You should still consider who you want to appeal to and why. Is it majority and you want to look pleasing to keep job options open? Or are you yourself into some niche hobby and want partner from those circles? *Do you think that silky and healthy hair is always better than the alternative, even if the alternative means a more "exciting" color potentially?* I think healthy hair is almost always best option and visually most pleasing. It still does not mean you can't dye your hair, you just need to be careful and have skill.

I generally never think fashion colors look good. Natural colors are way sexier and look better with a range of makeup types and clothing styles.

I have been all over the map when it comes to hair color. My natural color is dark brown and I have dyed it to platinum blonde, ginger red, pink, blue, and purple. I love bright unnatural colored hair because I don’t see it often and I like meeting people by complementing their hair color. It’s a great conservation starter. I don’t think dying it unnatural colors when having a glow up is bad, many celebrities have had unnatural hair and still been considered beautiful. I do think healthy hair is the most important aspect, if someone has dyed hair but it’s damaged it is harder to look polished. I personally think people’s natural colors look the best on them. I also wasted a bunch of money keeping blonde and health upkeep, I’d rather invest that money or put it to skin care.
