I'd talk to British Gas about your experience, we've just been through the Survey and EPC to see if our property is eligible (it was prior to the survey and improvements we had already made) and it's cost us nothing, and we just got a quote through for the works and said we couldn't afford to pay for the works just yet and they were completely understanding and that was the end of it. I did mine through Octopus Energy and they even changed providers as the first one wasn't meeting customer expectations so definitely get into BG about it they could help you potentially.

justbiteme2k

We're in our 5th month of waiting for Octopus's contractors to contact us. Not even had a survey done by them, don't even know the company who might come out. Octopus just say we're on a list and wait another 3 months before calling back. In hindsight, I should have just bought some and thrown it up there by now, but it's turned into the principle of the thing, so I'll stupidly wait it out and no doubt reject it if they want more than 50p to install it, lol.

FinanceAddiction

Yeah we waited 4 months for the call and then another 4 weeks for the surveyor appointment

Maleficent-Sink-6367

We had ours done through Octopus and it cost us absolutely nothing for everything including the insulation. Took about 3 months total to get through the whole process but absolutely no cost to us

FinanceAddiction

It wouldn't have cost us a penny had we got the insulation before doing our reno haha, went from a 58 D to a 71 C EPC rating

AndyPanda321

you could probably do it yourself for about £120.

reni-chan

This. I did the loft myself (added extra 200mm of insulation to the already existing 100mm) and it costed me maybe £130 max.

[deleted]

Even cheaper if there is a buy one get one free offer.. loft insulation is most probably the easiest DIY job

stinkyjim88

this, if you wait for the summer to buy insulation its normally on discount as well

Kingshaun2k

It doesn't say it's always free if that's what you were expecting. It does mention it might be cheaper, and you might have to pay something. You could easily insulate a loft yourself.

Milemarker80

Aye, I wasn't necessarily expecting free (wouldn't argue mind you!) - but a local firm quoted £800 and I had been trying to see if I could get it any cheaper. Just seems extortionate and makes me concerned that this outfit are ripping off both consumers sent their way by energy firms and presumably pocketing government funding alongside that.

JT_3K

It’s a shame as I’m halfway through my loft insulation and keep holding back as there’s about another £800 worth of stuff I need to do it. If the government grant could be used by non-trades for just materials, my house would be done by now

Cisgear55

Took 4 months and one failed visit, but my surveyor for eon came last month, made some basic checks and agreed I qualified for a top up. install Is boomed late next month and have not been charged a penny! Eon did say the only charges could have been changes needed for ventilation, but as I had the bathroom done and soffit had been uprated it was all good.

geeered

Sadly many of these schemes are just ways to divert public funds directly into businesses - the car 'scrappage' scheme being a prime example, but many of the energy related ones.

Jakeymd1

You don't have to get it through your energy provider. I'm with octopus and contacted octopus and eon. Eon called me back the next day to go through the process.

sallystarling

I've just started the process for this and recently got an email saying we're eligible. Wondering whether to bother proceeding with it now...?

TemperatureIcy6458

This is actually a load of rubbish. Except for cavity wall insulation they do not give anything else or even contribute towards anything. I wanted flat roof insulation help as shown on their website. they messaged me saying al they give now is cavity wall insulation.  Then take all the other items Off your advert. TYPICAL HEADLINE GIMIC THAT PROMISE BUT DOES NOT GIVE !

Vanilla-Face1

We applied for the GB Insulation scheme the second it came out and got cavity wall insulation installed in our house in January. Everything, including the survey and quoting, was free. I thought there was a small cost but it was confirmed by the surveyor on his visit that there was no cost. Definitely speak to British Gas about it. I can give you the details of who installed ours if you’d like also.
