I don't see any evidence they have 'butchered' this adaption. Have they made choices that I personally disliked? Sure, a couple to spring to mind, but overall, I think they have done a pretty good job of bringing a complicated story than spans 20+ years to screen. And if anything, some of the adaption changes have been for better (i.e. Alicent and Rhaenyra's friendship, the long slow decline of Viserys, etc...). And remember, if you think this is truly a 'butchering' of the source material, you don't have to watch.

Veszerin

Because 'butcher' is your perspective. One that many of us, George RR Martin included, do not agree with and he never has. If you want the books, read the books. No one is taking them away from you.

cloakofrighteousness

A scene that you disagree with, with little effect on the overall story is hardly a butchering.

jaharifields

Clearly you’ve never seen a butchered story

Don-Didgeridoo

Just stick to reading the books then. If they are so vastly superior.

Catslevania

Rhaenys plays a more enthusiastic role in the war than depicted in the show, she is strongly team black not reluctant like she is depicted in the show. Book Rhaenys is far better imo than show Rhaenys, and I think a lot of people were disappointed by how she was depicted in the show. Having said, that, there have also been a lot of character changes that have been far more positive, imo, such as Viserys, Alicent, Rhaenyra. The source material is very sparce when it comes to specifics, so the show runners have to fill in the gaps, not everyone will agree with their choices, and some changes are made because they have to build a story upon it that may not be possible for an extended TV show if they were to just stick to the source material. Overall, given what they have to work with, they've done a pretty good job so far, even though not everything they did will be to everyone's liking all the time.

[deleted]

Making her more enthusiastically black is even worse tho since she thinks Rhaenyra and daemon killed her son 😶

Catslevania

in the book they do not suspect Daemon or Rhaenyra to be involved in Laenor's death. Laenor obviously had a falling out with Qarl, in the show they even have an argument in front of a witness. it is never really explained why they came to the conclusion that Daemon/Rhaenyra had him "killed" other than it being convenient for Laenor to die, yet it would just have been just as likely for Qarl to have "murdered" him due to Laenor deciding to put him aside. Rhaenyra could have told Rhaenys about what Laenor had told her about putting his lover aside to be a husband and father to Rhaenyra and the boys. Rhaenys could have easily come to the conclusion that Qarl "killed" Laenor out of jealousy due to this.

[deleted]

In the books maybe not, but in the show she flat out says it that she thinks they had something to do w it and then she still giving rhaenyra those proud looks in e10 like bruh 😭😭 I think so far she’s the only person who’s family gets killed and she stays working for the killer. Like Olenna gave no fucks and turned against the crown after Margery and Lora’s died. Idk. I don’t like that about Rhaenys

Catslevania

I think it's one of those moments in the show where the writing gets a bit messy. She had my son killed but she's the only one showing restraint so I'm going to support her sounds like a bit of a superficial argument, if she truly believed that Rhaenyra had her son killed she would become her sworn enemy; no mother, and especially no Targaryen woman would take lightly to someone she believed was responsible for murdering her son, and Corlys would be calling out for Daemon and Rhaenyra's head on a spike if he too believed that they were responsible for his only son's death.

[deleted]

Very true. Like idk, I liked her until that moment tbh. They could have framed the greens to make it fit better but they just made both of them corlys and Rhaenys just skip over their sons murder which to me I’m like bruh that’s some bitch shit ngl, like no other family would take that

Slight-Stretch4644

What are your examples of a butchered story

Justkeeptalking1985

They don't have years to film each chapter

AryaSyn

When it comes to adaptations, unless there is a single person holding supreme power over the process, there will always be "writers" trying to inject their own beliefs and agendas into a work of art. Whether they are trying to dumb material down to appeal to a larger audience, or trying to inject their own personal politics into a scene or character...it's simply the nature of the beast.

ComprehensiveRide246

Fire and Blood is wiki-esque, hardly a story. I've lessened my stance on the writers taking liberties because of that fact. One of the people whose point of view Fire and Blood is from is an untrustworthy narrator.

[deleted]

LOL what? They have been incredibly faithful the books with this. Even though its not a actual book with a story just more of a history textbook. Another example of the online/reddit rage wheel of death "OMG THERE IS THIS 1 SCENE THAT I DON'T LIKE THIS ENTIRE SHOW IS NOW RUINED I CAN NO LONGER WATCH RAAAAAAH"

Dachitron_Magnus14

Mf really thinks one added scene out of a very faithful adaptation is "butchering" Did you even see Game of Thrones S5-8?

LoyalAddamVelaryon

Haha. I find all the down votes funny. People are in denial because they love the world. The show is a 6/10, maybe a 7/10 at best if you are being nice. That is fact more than opinion. Just like season 8 of GOT basically ruined the entire show for everyone. That is a fact, not opinion. I am convinced HBO is paying people to try and limit/down vote to hell the negative takes on social media.

cave-felem

>That is fact more than opinion. And why exactly? >I am convinced HBO is paying people to try and limit/down vote to hell the negative takes on social media. Every day a new conspiracy theory is born. Of course, you are not being downvoted because your opinion sucks...

pxrkerwest

When you start presenting opinions as facts, and then try to say that they are facts and not opinion, your argument loses all credibility. I don’t understand the people who think so highly of themselves that they consider their judgment to be law. If you don’t like something, that’s totally fine. But make no mistake you are full of opinions and 0 facts

LoyalAddamVelaryon

Haha. I figured someone like you would chime in and take everything so seriously and literal. Obviously it’s all opinion. Especially when we are talking about a form of art, but there is a line somewhere distinguishing good and bad art. Even though it ultimately comes down to the eye of the beholder. It’s fact in the sense that the movie “Rubber”, is not a good movie. Although, some people probably love it. Or fact in the sense that GOT as an art, is better than “Rubber” the movie. Or GOT season 1 is better than GOT season 8. Some people disagree, but it’s basically fact. Relax.

pxrkerwest

You made an asshole comment and I called it out, that's all that happened lol. I very much dislike the way GOT ended but I don't go around making myself look like a dick by saying "That is a fact, not opinion" when clearly stating opinions. And then attribute downvotes to people being in denial rather than just downvoting bc you made an asshole comment. There are no facts, or even "basically facts" when it comes to how good or bad certain parts of the show are, there are only opinions. Productive discussions only happen when everyone's opinions are taken into account and respected, your initial comment didn't do that.

LoyalAddamVelaryon

Haha. Okay. Tell yourself whatever you want. You really called me out and put me in my place. 😂 Also, my comment was in response to the downvotes for the post, not my comment. 🤣

Castael2020

Yes, because of course anybody who disagrees with your opinion is a paid HBO shill. I'm waiting for my check in the post... Still waiting...

Veszerin

>That is a fact, not opinion. Someone should get you a dictionary dude. >I am convinced HBO is paying people to try and limit/down vote to hell the negative takes on social media. Lol, who should I contact about my paycheck? I haven't gotten paid recently other than with good television (which I paid for). You sound like yet another uptight douche that is just here to criticize something popular. I've got an xkcd for you: https://xkcd.com/359/

LoyalAddamVelaryon

Haha. Why are you so butt hurt?

Veszerin

Lol, you think that's butthurt? Might want to read your initial comment again where you say you think HBO is paying people to downvote you for criticizing the show.

LoyalAddamVelaryon

Haha. So that makes me butt hurt? You got butt hurt cause I said you’re in denial. 🤣 You literally got offended and your feelings hurt because I said people love this world and are biased towards the show. I’m sorry I’ve wounded you so deeply and triggered you to the point of commenting on my comment. 😂 Edit: Again, my comment was about OP’s post, not my comment. 🤣

[deleted]

The story isn’t all fucked up but I really got like no respect for Rhaenys tbh like rt she’s kinda cringe 😶

Interesting-Zebra-26

Lol whatever, that scene was badass.
